There are good tacos, and there are great tacos. And then there are tacos that disintegrate in an explosion of flavor in your mouth. PbP's carnitas would fall under the latter. My theory is that the trick lies in the Vietnamese twist. Whereas in an ordinary taco, the beans and rice are relatively mushy compared to the tougher meat, these bad boys invert the texture dynamic. The shredded carrots, onion and cilantro (oh god bless cilantro) all maintain their rigidity, magnify the impact of your teeth on the braised-til-they're-ready-to-fall-apart-pork bellies. Woohoo! I'm glad Justin stopped by our office to promote his business. My company is becoming a regular! When we bring him in for catering, it's like we are getting a personal chef to cook for our office! He brings all the ingredients to make the tacos and heats them up during lunch time, sets them on trays for people to grab and keeps refreshing the trays as the tacos are being eaten. He has a very good selection and even accommodates our large population of vegetarians. I've tried pretty much all the tacos and all area really good! Meats are always cooked well and to my surprise (as a huge meat eater) the vegetarian options are really good! I wish there was a tad more flavor on some of the meats, but overall, they're really good. Overall, I would totally recommend Powered by Pork for catering. Justin came by our office to show us his what PbP is about. Really tasty and an awesome concept I am between a 4 and 5 star on Powered by Pork. The pork belly is something else. It looks like it is going to be chewy, but it is prepared so it literally melts in your mouth. You kind of have to try it yourself. I can't really think of an equivalent food experience. Alright...to preface this review, I want to say the following: I am coming out of the woodwork after a damn new 2-year hiatus to explain to the Yelp community the glory that are Powered by Pork's heavenly blessed tacos. 'Murrica! With the above statement, you are probably screaming, "SHILL!" but I caution you against such a claim. The proprietor, Justin, has been feeding me tacos for around a year now off and on, usually on Second Saturday's in Sacramento right outside good ol' Golden Bear. I've got to say that these are some of the best street tacos around. Justin rolls some seasonal tacos into the mix of his standard fare so, when the duck taco arrives, be prepared for orgasm-rivaling-pleasure-impulses coursing through your skull. His carnitas are pretty world-famous, and I love them beyond words. I don't think I've had dry carnitas from him, and I usually eat at least 4 per sitting. I have tried everything under the sun provided by PbP, but I ALWAYS go back to the carnitas. The lengua tends to be pretty amazing as well, and my girlfriend is a fiend for the pork belly. He rarely has any two tacos that taste similar, and exhibits flavors from around the globe - namely Mexico and Asia. Not only does this guy put the effort and caring into the preparation of the meats that he puts into his tacos - he puts a lot of thought into the ancillary ingredients, including shaved carrot, daikon, peanuts, onion, cilantro, etc etc that really pulls the whole thing together. On top of that, he makes custom sauces to slather inside your tacos - the glue, if you will. I don't know exactly what is in the brown Asian inspired sauce, but it is my favorite, bar none. (And of course, he has the obligatory bottle of sriracha). Food aside, Justin is a pretty cool dude that can strike up a good conversation out of thin air, and captivate a whole group of drunk ass bros, hipsters, ghetto peeps, or [insert your societal subgroup here]. So take some time after a long night of partying, order a round of tacos (or 7), and sit on the curb near his cart. When you're done, you may just want to lick the drippings that have fallen in the gutter. read more

My first time trying Jackfruit meat tacos (vegan) and it was delicious! Their house-made sauces goes so well together with the tacos. I wish they'd give out more of the pickled carrots and daikons because they were really good. Overall, a very delicious concept of combining Vietnamese flavors with Mexican food. My only complaint is their tortilla...after having tasted freshly made tortillas, these ones just lacked in flavor and texture. The whole thing was barely above room temperature. The carnitas was bland. If there was either cheese or beans on it I couldn't tell. Sad to give this 1 star after being super excited to try this at Hapa's in San Jose. It seems like they may have been understaffed, so there was about a 10-15 min wait, which was fine bc I figured it would be worth it. I ordered 4 tacos to try most of their stuff (4/$10: pork belly, carnitas, duck confit +$2, short rib +$1), and was left disappointed. Not only are the tacos single tortilla (they barely held up), but every single taco lacked seasoning and overall flavor. The duck was tough, the pork belly was fatty, and the carnitas and short rib didn't taste like anything, so nothing was satisfying. I would love to support a small business, but this food just does not taste good, and is very overpriced for what you get. I tried it with a friend. We have a lot of eating and cultural experience between us, ordered several different dishes, and were uniformly disappointed. Yes it's very hip and cool, but for Mexican or Vietnamese or other ethnic food, this is not in the same league as an "authentic" restaurant, and for 2-3X the price. Total bummer. The tacos are good but here is the beef that I have. When I searched for Vietnamese your cart came up. When I asked what made it Viet, you joked and said that you came from San Jose and you dated a couple of Vietnamese girls. The whole thing with Vietnamese food is that there is a balance between flavors. Your tacos are really sweet. I liked the tacos a lot but that has nothing to do with the Vietnamese cooking. Your pricing. A lot on the high side. I love to eat mass quantities but cannot do that if your selling tacos for $2.50 each (2 for $5). That's not too bad a price but when I read and see for myself that you are just giving away tacos left and right, like if you post on any of the social networks, makes me think that the tacos aren't really much to begin with. read more

Wow, where do I begin! We were asked to host a company sponsored Fall luncheon and decided on another luncheon using Food Trucks which we had done in the Summer for all of our 150 employees. The Summer event was a huge success! We chose to go with a new group of Food Trucks for this event and secured 'Powered by Pork' and three other Trucks. We wrote to all the Trucks in July, 2016 and each confirmed they would participate in our September, 2016 event. We hand-picked these Trucks as their menus were amazing as well they each had very good reviews on Yelp. We communicated continually from July to current with every detail, menu choices, our specified insurance certificate needs (standard practice), pre-paid where warranted, etc. for this luncheon/event to four Trucks. It is one week as of yesterday until our event, and Justin of 'Powered by Pork' has DROPPED OUT and did it by a quick email that said, "catch you next time". Seriously??? Remember, he had confirmed when asked to participate, however, when it came to the insurance certificates, we wrote and called him continuously for over a month!! Apparently he couldn't get what we needed for whatever reason - though, he never ever responded to our numerous emails and voice mails seeking assistance. All other Trucks supplied them with no problem within days of asking. Again, this is standard practice in the industry for most venues. As noted, Justin was very difficult to work with (the ONLY one of our four confirmed Trucks) for his lack of communication. I cannot recommend using 'Powered by Pork' for any event you may be considering. Justin of 'Powered by Pork' could likely do the same 'one week cancel' at your important event by an informal, blunt, and in poor taste, e-mail!!! Again to reiterate our situation, he never got back to us even after we called and e-mailed him numerous times. He and 'Powered by Pork' has let a lot of people down by not keeping his commitment to our company lunch event which we already had flyers printed with his logo and promoting his menu. I have to note, that he is truly off our list to ever call/e-mail for any future event. This behavior from Justin of 'Powered by Pork' displays a highly disappointing work ethic and is extremely unprofessional and surprisingly, based on Yelp reviews, never would I have thought this!!! The other Trucks we've secured have written back continually and actually stated how appreciative they were of our 'thoroughness and attention to details' - again, this is for an corporate event of 150 people - you want it perfect and all details confirmed!! There are other amazing Food Trucks out there, definitely use them instead! Again, good luck if you decide to use 'Powered by Pork' for your event, but I wouldn't chance it if you are one who likes the security of everything in place prior to your event! read more

Our lunch was catered by Powered by Pork and it was so tasty! I love the unique flavor of the salad they had with bamboo shoots and bean sprouts. The meats in the tacos were also great especially the pork belly! They got the flavor pairings down cause it wasn't just the meats that made it great but the ingredients as a whole to make the taco. They were outside Temescal brewery and I got hungry so decided to get some tacos. The woman was very nice and friendly but she didn't know how to use the square reader for credit cards and said I had to wait because the chef was too busy to help her. Mind you there is a square logo on their window along with visa, mastercard, etc to let us know they accept credit cards. I didn't mind waiting because I wasn't starving but I literally stood there for 10 minutes until he came out to help me. Anyway, finally got my food and it was just ok.
