Pownd Cakes By Jen....one favorite spot of mine on the Southside. Sophia and I stopped here after having lunch nearby. Their pound cakes are some of the best desserts I've had here. They're so moist you can say they're like regular cakes. Let's see what they've been up to. Walking inside, we were welcomed by Jen and her staff, which was just her and an employee who happened to enter behind us. We stopped at POWnd Cakes by Jen as part of our 757 Sweet Tooth Saturday passport series and let me just say -- this place is a gem! It's a cute little counter-service spot with no indoor seating, but it's decorated beautifully inside and very welcoming. I picked up six mini pound cakes (I couldn't help myself!): * Butter * Almond * Caramel * Banana Pudding * Chocolate chocolate Chip * Cinnamon (the flavor that launched the business!) Each one was incredibly moist and full of rich flavor. Not a single miss in the box. The staff was so kind and helpful -- I spoke with a lovely woman behind the counter, and the owner herself helped me pick out my flavors. You could tell she's passionate about her craft and really knows her stuff. Also, it's dog-friendly! Since it's grab-and-go, I was able to bring my Boston Terrier, Lexi, inside while I ordered. Putting the POW in POWnd cakes, for REAL! I asked for recommendations and trusted in Jen. She said the coconut cake was VERY good - and she didn't lie. Customer service was fantastic; I called the day before to ask when they weren't busy as I would likely have my service dog with me and of course not let's allowed in the store. But the man I spoke to on the phone said he would come to the door and I wouldn't even have to set foot in the store if my dog was with me. Luckily, I got parking right outside and left the windows down and popped in by myself. Glad I did. Was so a lovely to meet Jen and her staff and try some of the different cakes available. We discovered Pownd Cakes by Jen through a Yelp Elite Perk event and I was so glad that I rsvp'd and I got it. Thanks Yelp! The store was very bright and was nicely decorated. The store smells really sweet and you can already tell that they are baking something delicious back there. Jen was very friendly. She was explaining how the cake sample taste works. She was very nice and very welcoming. I already know that I am getting their red velvet while my SO ordered the cookies and cream. Although we already know what we are getting, Jen still gave us a sample of the cakes just in case. The moment we took the first bite, I was so glad I got a chance to participate in this event. The red velvet cake was very moist just by looking at it. It's a little bit sticky, and once I took a bite, it really melts on your mouth, just what Jen and their website said. The side of the cake has a little crunch, but the insides were soft and is very delicious. I am not a big cake fan, but if this the kind of cake that I will eat all the time, I will probably be a cake fan. We ate our mini cakes when we got home and shared it with our family members. They enjoyed it as well. I kind of wished that we ordered a bigger cake. Overall, we had a very good time and I highly recommend Pownd by Cakes to everyone who are cake lovers, non cake lovers, or if you are just craving for something sweet. Recent visit inspired by a Yelp event; special thanks to Jen (owner) and CoVA CM, Anne F (and team), for coordinating; scored a free mini cake. Of course, with the treat quality, menu variety, and cost, you can't stop at 1. Felt like a fatty (and looked like one too), walking out w 2 bags of goodies...but hey, we must support local businesses (and my family's sweet tooths, sweet teeth?....I digress). I left with lemon x2 (wife's fave), apple, chocolate, cookies n cream, and my NEW FAVE: coffee chip x2. Maaaaan, so moist, sweet, and the perfect infusion of Java flavor for this junkie! Jen shared that the owner of La Brioche bakery taught her the secret of pulling this off - I love COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION, especially when it tastes this good. Getting 6 for $25 is too good of a deal for a family our size not to bite; also great for being an office hero or gift giving to people not counting calories. I have heard so many good things about this place! I was already in the area and decided to call to see if they had Gluten free options. I was happily surprised that they told me yes. My friend and I walked over from the brunch spot we were at. It was an enjoyable 5 minute walk. The owner Jen was at the front and asked if we had been there before. We let her know we haven't but heard good things. She explained all the flavors and let us know there were samples to try. I asked about the gluten free options and they had Caramel, Vanilla and Chocolate. I was so excited that it wasn't just a butter flavor only. I was torn between Caramel and Vanilla and decided to get Vanilla. I wanted to buy some for my parents and they aren't very adventurous so I got them butter and Lemon. My friend got two carrot cake minis. There was a deal 6 minis for $30 otherwise $6 per mini. Let me tell you these pownd cakes are so moist, light and delicious!! Since I live so far she let us know Canvas coffee in NN also carries a variety of their flavors so I will have to see if they carry GF at all. While I was having brunch with a friend over at Baker's Crust we both noticed POWnd Cakes by Jen and we asked ourselves "Is that new? Because I do not remember seeing it before." After looking them up on Yelp and seeing all the rave reviews, we decided that we HAD to go in check them out. There are two things you need to know about this place. One is that they have every flavor you can think of (from chocolate, to red velvet, to eggnog, to cookies n cream, to mint chocolate.) Two is that each flavor is bomb af; like they're just so just delicious and moist and no shade, but some of these other restaurants and bakeries out here serving dry ass cakes could learn a thing or two from Ms. Jen. I chose the 6 minis took them home quartered them and put the rest in the freezer for a later time. These were so moist and flavorful even from the freezer a couple weeks later.
