This is a basic deli, lots of specialty chips when you walk in. The folks behind the counter aren't especially friendly. I ordered a turkey with bacon panini and it was on the same ciabatta bread that Costco sells! Really??!! They did have a yummy onion jam type of thing on it that I liked...which is the reason I gave them three stars instead of two. They have a kids cheese sandwich, but don't have a good selection of chips for a child's palate. My daughter would have liked cheeto's, but they only had the spicy variety. This place is decent enough for a sandwich, depending on what kind of sandwich you're looking for there are definitely better options in the Capitol Hill/Eastern Market area. But, I can't knock Prego, as long as Quiznos and Subway disgustingly sit within a couple block radius. I definitely don't know why people would eat that trash with this place right around the corner. I used to walk here regularly for lunch, but unfortunately Prego sits directly next to Tortilla Cafe (and that's a losing battle when it comes to my stomach's preferences). This city is known for racist individuals treating African Americans, anyway, they want while still thriving in their communities. How on earth could anyone consider this place " a great sub shop"? The place is terrible. Terrible quality bread and cold cuts. The only redeeming factor is the incredibly friendly man who runs the store. Living across the street means we go there every once in a while on a lazy weekend day for sandwich. This is a lunchtime favorite among my co-workers. They have an interesting Italian-leaning menu that includes old favorites like spaghetti, cookies and tomato-based sandwiches. Nearly every weekend afternoon, we find ourselves craving Prego -- the sandwiches, yes, but more so the lazy experience itself. This little sub shop is the perfect place to loaf to in flip flops and jeans, to sit outside in the sun, reading the Hill Rag, eating slowly and watching people pushing baby strollers and walking dogs past the vendors of Eastern Market. The line's never too long, and we don't have to deal with a waiter bugging us when we just want to chill. That sweet feeling of indulgence sets in when we sit back in the metal chairs, rip open the little bags of kettle chips and pop the tops off our iced tea and lemonade. My girlfriend and I stopped into Prego this afternoon for a quick look around. When we walked in I looked first at the store owner (presumably) and then to his wife(again, presumably). They both looked directly at us yet neither said a word. Now this in itself it's an issue. Persoanally, I like to be greeted when I enter an establishment but not hounded. No biggy. After a quick look around (they really don't have much on the shelves) we headed for the door. Now herein lies the onion. As we approached the door I noticed two things simultaneoously. First, a white female patron entered the store and was greeted by the store owner. Second, the store owner craned his neck around a display case in order to see what my girlfriend had in her hand. Customer service really isn't that difficult. Prego ought to pay a visit to Hill's Kitchen, they really get it...and they get my money too because of it. read more

I gave this place two stars because "Meh,. I've experienced better" accurately sums up how I felt about my lunch experience today. The Italian was fine. The bread tasted the the bread I've had from Bliimpie, which is not a compliment really. As many have said, this Italian deli is owned by Asians and worked by Latinos so it is a melting pot. I just wasn't impressed with the food. Maybe as a regular deli it would be better. I fear my living in NYC and Boston has spoiled me for real Italian delis when I move down here. read more

They may have dropped the "delly" from the name, since the sign just says "Prego" now. It's an italian deli run by asians that make a pretty good sandwich for under $6. They've been there for 35 years according to the guy at the register, and I'll be willing to bet they do a bit more business after the renovation of 7th street and the re-opening of Eastern Market. They have all the standard jars and sauces you'd expect at an italian deli, and they make a pretty good turkey sub. read more

This deli gets 4 stars because it delivers VERY well for what it claims. They have fast service and great sandwiches and very low prices. Most sandwiches are around $4.50. Their specialty is the Prego Special which is a spicy Italian sandwich. My other favorites are the BLT and Cheesesteak, although I always ask them to put less meat than normal because it is really ridiculous how much they put on their sandwiches. There is only one small table inside the shop but on warm days there are 4 tables outside on a nice street on Eastern Market. I eat at Prego Deli around twice a week. They have a nice variety of sandwiches and a huge chip selection. My personal favorite is the #1, but the paninis they've introduced are my husband's favorite. He loves the turkey and brie. I usually hit Tortilla Cafe next door for lunch, but since I'd been gorging myself on Mexican food lately, I decided to give this place a try. Good stuff for a better-than-average Italian sandwich in DC. It's not Litteri's or Mangialardo's, but it's still leagues better than the D-Grade cow rectums and chicken spam they peddle at Subway/Quiznos. I got the #4 on a hard roll, which is basically the Prego Special (bologna, salami, capicola, provo) with extra prosciutto and pepperoni and olives and sweet peppers. A substantial sandwich; anyone complaining about how expensive a $6 sandwich is needs to stay home with a loaf of Wonder Bread and some expired lunchmeat. There's a $1 Value Menu at McDonalds right down the street. Since it was Friday, they were serving clam chowder, so I got a big bowl and it really helped take the chill away. Nice chunks of potato and clam served New England style. The breakfast sandwiches looked killer (like Market Lunch's minus the 15-minute wait) and like a lot of Korean run carryouts, they sometimes serve bulgogi. I had an awesome experience at Prego yesterday! Service was friendly and PROMPT and they turn out a delicious product! My partner, who is a hoagie aficionado, was satisfied... that alone is worthy of 4 stars in my book. The pastrami was delicious, and his turkey + veggie creation was great too (of course I tried it). The prices are very reasonable, to top it all off. I foresee grabbing sandwiches at Prego to take to Nats games all summer long! Woo! read more

had a trip to DC, and bumped into this wonderful place. very soft buns, RICH cheese, and the size was large enough to make me happy. set the patio to be my base, who cares about the bad weather, when u get to taste the great cold cut combo. I honestly don't know what they did to make the spicy sauce to be soo tangy, well, I'm loving it, and it suits the "special" cold cut very well. one more thing to add, so many chips and drinks which I never saw in my life before. wish I had more time in DC, but it surely made my trip happier. read more
