Love this salon. Everyone is so nice and professional. The shop is cute and the atmosphere is great. I can always find parking. I have been getting my hair colored by Shauna for several years now and with COVID I was missing her a lot. Since they have reopen things seem to be running smooth. Pret A Porter Salon is located in a nice area near downtown La Mesa. The salon is very comfortable and the service is a 5 star no doubt. I went along for the ride with my GF who got a hair cut and highlights. Her stylist Samantha did an excellent job with her hair and making us both feel at home. So glad I found Shelly and Macie at Pret A Porter Salon. I've had a lot of massages and facials. What I liked best about Macie's facial is that we spent time talking with me about my needs, her plan and what the benefit of each treatment would be. She was calm and delicate with her touch. I needed to cut my hair off because it was too long and awful. Roz is fantastic at her work and made me look amazing. I'm definitely not going to go anywhere else. I've had my haircut short before and it was just totally botched. Roz is a total magician and it looks just like the photos I brought in. I have extremely difficult hair because it is pretty thick. She warned me that I'd have to come in every 3 weeks to make sure that it doesn't grow into some horrifying bowl cut. And each time, she totally wows me. She was also right about the frequency that I need to visit to make it look as good as it does. She's really competitively priced especially for her level of experience. I'm certain that all the other stylists are fantastic too. Also, the salon offers other services so it's kind of a One-Stop shop for a lot of things involving beauty and relaxation. They will also wear a mask if that is something you need them to do. I felt safe and taken care of. It's kind of a drive from where I live, but I am not going to stop going here because it is totally worth it. read more

However, they are closed Sunday AND Monday.. the only two days I have off work. So unless I get a random day off in the middle of the week... I unfortunately won't be returning here. Nice spot. As soon as you walk in the door, you're greeted and offered tea (thankuverimuch). I've been in a couple of times to get my hair cut and I've walked out happy both times. The stylists REALLY work to give you what you want and make sure you're pleased with the results. The first time I went in I got a DRAMATIC haircut (goodbye inches and inches of hair!) and they really took their time ensuring I got the right cut. My cut came with a scalp massage, shampoo, cut, and dry for $42. Not too bad for a little pampering and a lot of precision. Oh, parking in front can be like playing tetris. I am so glad I gave Pret-a-Porter a shot. I am a big fan of Aveda products and found this salon through their website. Teresa gave me an amazing facial. Professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. Her $75 european facial included more pampering than I can remember. Those 90 minutes of peace included arm and hand massages, an exfoliating mask, aroma therapy, shoulder massage, back massage, excavations, another mask, face massage...the bliss went on and on. My stylist was friendly...I just wish the salon was nicer and my hair looked better. BONUS: Reader challenge at the bottom. I've been going to Aveda Salons since the late 1990s and I've seen my share; some are amazing, luxurious, high-style mecca's of beauty while others are more like hippie attempts at style. Pret-a-Porter is neither of these. It's got the traditional Aveda jewel toned style, but this one misses the mark a bit. Maybe they're just more frugal than other Aveda salons but no-one offered me tea, there was no changing room where I could take off my shirt and put on a clean smock, the decor wasn't luxurious and worst of all, there was a strong acrid smell throughout the salon. For me, the whole point of going to an aveda salon is to have a natural feeling experience and I have NEVER smelled products like dye or perm gel in an aveda salon! I think it's a ventilation issue, and it's a deal breaker for me. Well, maybe it wouldn't be if my hair looked good, but it doesn't. I could tell right away that there were issues, but at least my hair looked good with the products she put in it. Today I have weird layers, fly-aways and a strange two-layer pony tail. Whoa is me! I've posted a photo so you can see what I mean. Challenge to readers: If you've gone to a good or bad stylist I will personally give you imaginary bonus points for posting a photo of your hair post-cut/dye/up-do! This review is quite overdue, but Yelp keeps reminding me I need to do it. Everyone here was quite friendly, which was nice. The manicure and pedicure just didn't turn out all that great. The shellac(like) polish colors were really limited, so I didn't end up really with a color I liked all that much, and it wasn't explained over the phone that there was a limited number of colors which would have been nice to know. They may have more now, since this visit was more than 6 months ago. The woman doing my nails did an ok job, but there were quite a few gaps between my cuticles and the polish where you could see nail. The parking lot is really small, so I parked on the street but had to go outside with wet nails to feed the meter mid way through my manicure. read more

One of my least favorite things to do when I move is find a new hair salon. What will the stylists be like? Will they listen to me? Will they ruin my hair so bad I'll have to go somewhere else and then avoid the other place like the plague and start all over? Luckily, I found Pret-a-Porter. And, it's within walking distance from home! Score! I've gotten my haircut three times here, and have yet to have a bad cut. Ask for Shawna - she knows her stuff. She listened to what I wanted each time, and had suggestions when I asked for them. The last time I went in, I had done some research online to find tips on the best hairstyles for my face shape. When I asked Shawna for tips on the same subject, she repeated everything I had read. Perfect. The cost is obviously going to be pricier compared to your average Great Clips or Fantastic Sams or Beauty School, but it is totally worth it. They also have spa services, weekly last-minute specials, and are an Aveda salon. As long as I live in San Diego, I won't go to another salon. read more

I'm a dude who normally visits a nearby barber every month or so. I wasn't happy with my last two haircuts (way too short) so gave this salon a try. It's close (right off of La Mesa Blvd) and convenient. I arrived after 5 PM and there were only a couple of customers finishing up. The receptionist (Vanessa) was cool and offered me a cold drink while I waited. Mandi, the cute and very hip hair sytlist (is that the right term?) had me in and out and looking good (IMHO) in 20 minutes. She cut my hair so it didn't look like I just got a haircut. Does that make sense? I like it. And THAT is the kind of service I'm talking about. Can't say enough good about this place, and especially Mandi. I'll be back. read more

I have been looking for a great Aveda Salon for my hair for a long time, and I always left feeling pretty but 2 days later, I would feel ... well "Blah". I had been going to one in Hillcrest for years and once I found a stylist I loved, they would just disappear and I'd have to get used to the next one. When I moved to La Mesa I decided I would try this place out. I came in for the first time in November and got my hair cut and highlighted. I thought it looked great, and was still loving it the next day when I got a phone call from Shauna (my stylist). She was just calling to make sure that I enjoyed my cut. My jaw dropped. How thoughtful! I went in about a month ago to get my eyebrows waxed and loved that as well. Then a few days later I received a Thank You note from Teresa letting me know how nice it was that I came in and that she was looking forward to our next appointment in May. The cuts and colors are exactly what you should expect from Aveda, beautiful and professionally done. But what has earned my loyalty and heart is the staff and the level of service I had yet to find in San Diego. Thank you! read more

The second time I even tried online so I wouldn't have to deal with a person but I was working when they left a voicemail and again tried to back. Now, I'm no salon connoisseur, but Pret-a-Porter is definitely a gem in my eyes. The industry today lacks passion. The receptionist smugly asks your name, a stylist slaps you in a chair, and for 30 to 40 minutes you get the pleasure of awkward smalltalk, having your scalp tugged mercilessly, and your neck positioned and repositioned in ways you never thought fathomable. The atmosphere at P-a-P eliminates all of that. As soon as you enter, the receptionist is pleased to offer you your choice of coffee, tea, or the occasional pastry. As far as stylists go, Dan is my favorite. He's a co-owner of the salon (along with his wife) and he's always in good spirits. He genuinely cares that I leave the shop with the hairstyle I came in looking for. Plus, he's a master of the aromatic scalp massage (which he very generously includes with every cut). Because he is one of the senior stylists, his cuts and colors come at a higher price, but you'll find it well worth it. I've even had the pleasure of experiencing the salon's facial treatment. I can safely assure you that my skin had never felt more refreshed than when I left that room. The setting is relaxing, the facials personalized for each individual's skin, and the advice for maintenance is top notch. All in all, I highly recommend this salon. The receptionist found me an opening within 40 minutes of my phone call, and when I got there, I was taken right on time. Mandi was super cute and friendly and as her other fan mentioned... had me in and out with a nicely snipped frontal 'do in under 20 minutes. I love Aveda, but I have lived in SD for almost four years and have been too cheap to try this place out. I did stop in once to buy some of their skin tint (which I love). After chasing groupons to multiple random salons and doing my own hair, I couldn't handle it anymore and made a beeline to this salon. Let me tell you, it was worth it. The owner Dan (which I didn't realize was the owner until afterward) got the color perfect after taking the time to flesh out exactly what I was looking for. I found this salon on accident and haven't looked back since. I see Dan for a cut/color about every two months. I have crazy curly hair (as does Dan) and no stylist has ever been able to cut my hair as well as he does. The color is amazing too; everyone tells me it looks so natural. They're usually amazed when I reveal I get some serious highlights. Even my beauty-oblivious husband said my hair looked great right after Dan had cut and colored it for the first time, which is a huge compliment to Dan b/c my husband never notices anything I do to my hair! LOL. I haven't had my hair styled by anyone at the salon, but as far as cut and color goes, if you're looking for a new salon, you should be very happy here. The only down side to the salon is the parking, b/c most of it's street parking, which can be a little difficult to mess w/ on a busy weekend. read more

So I came to Pret a Porter salon for a simple hair cut and was very impressed with the place. I got my hair cut from Dan who did a good job of making sure it was cut just the way I like it. I'm kinda of a hairy guy and the back of my neck grows very fast. Dan didn't just buzz the back of my neck like many places do but used a straight razor to get a good close cut. On top of that everyone was very friendly and attentive right away when you walk in the door. The receptionist was extremely welcoming and helpful over the phone and when I arrived I felt immediately comfortable with the laid-back atmosphere. I love coming here! I have been coming to see Shauna for years and , even after a move almost an hour away, I still keep coming back. Not only is everyone very sweet and accommodating, it is very clean and relaxing. Shauna is especially wonderful. She is always upbeat and smiling. I was recently in the salon when a VERY rude woman came to the counter demanding to return Aveda products that she said she had bought on Amazon. Keep in mind that Aveda does not sell on Amazon, only through their own storefront, authorized salons and the Aveda website. The receptionist was trying her best with this obnoxious woman, again, very loudly demanding a refund for bottles and bottles of product that she insisted she had bought on Amazon. Poor Shauna went to calmly try and defuse this woman and the woman flew off the handle, storming out! Personally, I would have told the woman to just get out, she was THAT loud and THAT RUDE! I thought they were very friendly and welcoming. I was very comfortable letting them work on my hair and giving me an eyebrow waxing. I had highlights put in and they didn't really show up that well because I have really dark hair but I kinda preferred it that way, because I like things to be more settle. I had a haircut from this place, but it wasn't like too amazing. The thing that really sold me was the eyebrow waxing. They take you back to this secret room in the back of the salon and it's pretty small, but it fits a comfortably reclined chair (for you), a chair for the person working on you to sit on, a mini waterfall, and a little radio thing to play calming soothing music. It was very relaxing in there when you are reclined and comfortable. Very nice. Overall: Their hair work is not that great for the price you pay, but their eyebrow waxing and facial stuff is AWESOME! read more

I just recently moved here, so obviously we are searching for a good place to get a haircut. I will give the salon high marks for being able to accommodate me on short notice (my hair was a disaster, and they saved me from going to a Supercuts type joint), but the girl cutting my hair... Well she did a good job all said and done, but I really don't like it when stylists rely so heavily on clippers. She was also all over the place and didn't have the stuff she needed at her station which didn't exactly inspire confidence. Conversation was nonexistent... I don't really like much small talk, but total silence isn't great either. Also she didn't shampoo my hair before or after, or make any offer to. So at the end of the experience the hair looks fine, but I think I'm still searching for a hair place. UPDATE: I added a star to my original review based on the salon contacting me twice to offer me a free haircut. A hair salon only has two options to make a bad situation better, either they refund you completely, or offer you a deal on your next cut. My cut wasn't bad in the first place, so offering me a free cut on a return trip was definitely the best and most gracious way they could have handled. Like I said the experience wasn't horrible by any means, and the stylist all said and done did a fine job. She just didn't leave a big enough impression to want me to come back. But I'll probably give them another shot! read more
