So after much research and debating between extensions or brazilian keratin treatment, I went with extensions. I went in for a quick consult with Lisa and she told me it'd be fine if I straightened my hair every day like I do now (my hair has body wave and I was worried the straight extensions would look funny). My appointment was on a Saturday and she dyed my hair a medium brown color to match the extensions. I love the hair color it's still bright and shiny. As for the extensions, it was like immediate gratification. My hair was getting progressively shorter and shorter due to all the bleaching I had done to it before and with extensions I could have the long hair I've always wanted in 2 hours or less. On my way out, she said that if I felt my extensions were still too long, to come back and she'd trim them for free. (I took her up on that offer a few days later and she layered and cut them to perfection!) Great job and she even gave me a big tub of hair conditioner to keep my extensions looking good. She even offered to teach me how to curl my hair if I was having problems doing so. That's great customer service! Since then I've had many girls compliment me on my hair. I'll be referring them to Lisa. Sidenote: Extensions are not cheap in general. Other salons charge around $500-$1000 and compared to them Lisa was a bargain. She only charged $250 for the extensions, and $40 for the hair coloring. Overall it still cost me a lot of money, but I'm happy with the results and the cost doesn't seem so much when they're going to last 3-4 months. *LONG REVIEW* I'm a pretty picky person, so when I find something/someone I like, I stick to it/them. I had been loyally coming to Lisa since I was 18 years old. I even followed her from the Magic Touch in Daly City to her new location in San Mateo. I recommended numerous friends to her, even brought my mother here for Mother's Day to get pampered. Over the years Lisa became pretty short with me, and our conversations became pretty strained. It would really upset me when I would come in and tell her I wanted to cut my hair short and she would tell me , "No, short hair won't look good on you because you have a chubby face." I even asked to change the color a few times, and she would look at me with a disgusted "no" look on her face. Last month, I came in and wanted a 'change' I asked her to make me blonde/ silver with dark roots. She kind of hesitated at first and then told me to come in. I came that evening after work. I was leaving on vacation that same week and had a job interview that next day. She started with bleach and bleached my hair, then washed it out and trimmed my hair a bit. I could tell she was rushing me because it was getting late and she was probably tired. She combed through my hair and told me she toned it silver. In her mirror it definitely looked lighter but the lighting made it look like an ashy blonde/ orange color. As soon a I left, I ran to Ulta to pick up some new shampoo/ conditioner for my hair and when I got there the staff pointed out that my hair was blueish green! I was so mortified. I called Lisa right away and told her I didn't like the blue/green tones and I needed her to fix it, and she said she was 'driving' and 'can't talk about it right now'. I picked up some AG Shampoo and conditioner and toned it myself at home, praying that the shampoo would clear out the blue/green tones. It helped out a lot! I called Lisa the next morning and told her I needed her to fix my roots since I had a job interview that evening. She told me "No, I am too busy today and I leave for Las Vegas tonight". I told her I had a job interview and couldn't come looking this way. I told her to refund me if she wasn't going to help so that I could pay another stylist to do it right. She refused to refund me and told me she was busy. I had to threaten her and say "Lisa, if you don't fix this, there is going to be a BIG problem!" Disgruntled, she told me to come in at 1:30pm. I came in and she put brown dye over my roots, in an effort to blend the blonde and my roots. It was a half assed/ rushed job. She also told me she didn't want to do my hair anymore because she always "Loses money" with me. I had no choice but to go to my interview like that and also, on vacation like that. I came back and immediately YELPed several salons and found Salon Le Rouge in Burlingame who was able to fix my hair! I will NEVER come back here nor would i recommend anyone to come here. read more

I have been meaning to write this update. 4 stars to 1 star. Here is why. (Lengthy - but read!) Came in, wanted wavy extensions. Was quickly color matched. Cost is $50 more. To put it simply, after ONE wash the waves were gone. So if you're debating between wavy and straight, stick to straight and curl yourself. $50 saved. Color match was so off in the daylight. Too light! Lisa had no assist this time. Instead I held the hair and handed them to her ONE BY ONE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME LISA? THIS IS NOT OKAY!!!!! I'm in your salon to relax and get my hair done - not work for free doing the job your assist should be doing? Curious if this has happened to anyone else here??? HOW UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Finally - done in about 1.5 hours. Fast. Some tugging but whatever. Now I don't know if the clamps she used were new or what.. but they made my scalp break out. BAD. GROSS. To the point where I was getting vertigo (severe dizziness - happened quite a few times when driving - scary!!). Didn't realize this was from the extensions. The nurse said that if they're put in wrong, this can happen. They wanted to give me a CT Scan just in case - so.... made an appointment to have them removed and have my hair cut. All is good - just vertigo. DAY OF REMOVAL - The assist did the entire job but the "hair cut". No pain in the removal process, the assist was really gentle - and the hair wash part was the best. HOWEVER - THE HAIR CUT BY LISA WAS NOT REALLY A HAIR CUT. It was a quick chop here and chop there that took 5 minutes. What on earth? Paid $60 bucks including tip for a nonsense hair chop that was sloppy and uneven. I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN HERE AGAIN. IF YOU HAVE EVEN A SLIGHTLY SENSITIVE HEAD, GET HEADACHES, MIGRAINES... AND MORE - I DO NOT RECOMMEND COMING HERE. The process to put the extensions in is way too fast that she is not doing it correctly - hence the vertigo. I've never had a vertigo issue since the extensions have been gone. I would get extensions again as I've had them before with no issues - but certainly not from here! LADIES, BEWARE!!!! read more

Ugh, my first experience here was relatively good but it's simply gone downhill from there. This most recent one was the absolute dealbreaker and I won't be back. You really get what you pay for here - her extensions are dirt cheap and you get a no-frills salon. No music, no magazines, no respect for your time - they will double book other appointments on top of yours and you'll sit around waiting for someone to get to you. The one time I had a full-head done, she charged $300 and it looked just awful. I mean, complete crap. The hair quality was also bad and tangled quickly. I ended up having a friend remove the top layer and trimming them just to make them look decent. This last time I came in for just 1/4 of a head, and Lisa didn't do my hair, her assistant did. The other girl spent almost 45 minutes just removing the old extensions, and ripped out a ton of my hair in the process. The she (the other girl) put in the new ones and took 4 times as long, and with even more hair pulling. She also didn't even listen to what I wanted or how I wanted them placed, and I had to stop her halfway through to correct her. They really don't listen to you here. During the 90 freakin' minutes I was there to get 2 measly rows of extensions, there was a screaming child running through the salon and no one did anything to quiet him. Lisa was also running a blowdryer and there is zero A/C in this place, on a hot day, so it was like I was sitting in a sauna. At one point someone called and asked for an appt, and Lisa told them to come in immediately. They did, and wound up sitting in the lobby area waiting for 30 minutes. I would have walked out after the first 10. As if this weren't all AWESOME enough, Lisa charged me for 40 extensions, but when I had my husband count them, turns out there were only 35 installed. So she lied and overcharged me on top of it all! Seriously, save yourself some major aggravation and go somewhere else. read more

I've been going to Lisa for several months and she is amazing every time. She's not so talkative, but she has a great eye for style and what will work best for your hair. I see this through her work and how she dresses and styles herself too. Her actions DO speak louder than her words. She is fast, precise and efficient. Not impersonal. Just confident and passionate about how she carries out her work. There's feeling behind those scissors. The last time I came in was for a haircut. I ended up getting highlights, which was something I never did before. The procedure was painless and the product did not smell (odorless). I sat comfortably under a rotating UFO that heated my head for some time. While this was going, Lisa even checked and fed my parking meter for me. I work in a conservative place that has a very strict dress code. The regulation has ambiguous wording that I interpreted would be ok for what I did. Lisa and I talked about this and she offered to dye my hair back (for free!) if it ended up being a problem! My next day at work, I got a lot of compliments for my new look. Grand opening of a fabulous new salon. I haven't had my hair styled for at least 10 years by someone other then myself, then I realized that I had more dead hair then I could take care of myself. It looked like a boring wednesday afternoon, so Lisa Xu (manager) so willingly let me walk in. It was 30 dollars for my first time wash and cut. I filtered through some books and she helped my decision, I basically wanted lots of layers. It turned out perfect, I would hope for longer but I had at least a couple inches of dead dry hair so I understand. It looks edgy and clean. I am glad to find a place to come back to now! read more

Had to downgrade one star as I was kind of disappointed at my hair cut I got from Lisa two weekends ago. There was nothing seriously wrong with the hair cut but it was just bland and when I look in the mirror right now, I feel, meh...It doesn't wow me or anyone else for that matter. It's almost like a cookie cutter style she does: every asian girl who walks out of her salon probably will have the same hair style if they have similar straight hair and length as I do. But not everyone has the same facial feature and face shape right? I think a great designer would style the hair so as to compliment your face and accentuate your features. Don't get me wrong; she does do a good job at cutting layers and some simple styling. And the price is lower than a what a designer would charge. But that's exactly what sets a designer apart from the rest of the crowd. I think I'll be looking for a hair designer next time even if that means I have to pay double or triple what she charges. read more

I've had my hair cut here several times, I believe by different stylist. It's okay, I suppose if I just want "maintenance" trims (since it's cheaper) but for major styling, I'd go over the next street to At One Ten. Comments: - Lisa straightens your hair before she cuts it. While she clearly has great skills with the shear, I fear that this technique can lead to failure, especially for people with wavy hair like myself. The haircut I typically ask for (which suits my wavy-curly hair) - layers is pretty hard to screw up. (no straight lines to deal with). This technique leads to shorter than expected hair cuts for wavy girls like myself. - Someone else had done my haircut here a few years ago and they screwed it up big time by making a section of uneven. I had to wait a while to see it look like random layers. Nonetheless, the cut works when needed. read more

This is without a doubt not the place to come if you want to relax and take your time getting your hair done by someone who really is going to take the time to care. Quite frankly, I like it that way. Lisa is fast, good, and it's always reasonably priced. My day doesn't revolve around getting my hair done. I find it to be a chore and Lisa makes it painless. This place is new, and I saw the "Grand Opening" sign a few weeks ago, so i stopped in to make the appointment to get my hair done after makeup for my wedding reception. When the day rolled around, I was running REALLY late. I called but I was even late for the extended time. Then when I showed up, there was a mix-up and someone was in my chair (my friend). OMG STRESS! So I was supposed to leave for the reception about 40 minutes after I arrived, and it was totally my bad. My hair is also extremely long and straight, so it needs the work. They did it in 20 minutes, and it looked great! It was an elegantly twisted top bun, lots of pins (I took out about 50 of them), plus some down curls, and boom boom boom done. I got to the restaurant in Daly City exactly on time, even though I had been 80 minutes late to the hair appointment. They did my 11-year old niece, too. Her grandfather was prompted to comment that he was surprised she is so pretty - he hadn't realized. They took slightly longer for her, but we got out of there in time. Woo! I got compliments on my hair, and they saved my ass. They even let me change in the back, and someone helped me button my dress. I'm a new fan. read more

Lisa... YOU ARE AMAZING! I had previously had my hair tortured by 3 hair stylist (if you can call them that) and they all ruined my hair. Over-highlighting, cutting way too short for naturally curly hair, and chemically stripping my hair of the mistakes they had made. Then I found Magic Touch! Lisa listened to what I wanted and I showed her pictures of "before" the aftermath and she has since has colored and highlighted my hair twice now and it's amazing every time. She styles it with a flatiron into this gorgeous glossy do - so straight and very flattering for my face. I get compliments everywhere I go on the color. She also gave me a tub of this green hair repair stuff with chinese writing on it which smells deliscous and is working wonders on my stressed hair! I love Lisa. She opened the store just for me on her day off. I got hair extensions that match my original hair color. My hair also has a natural wave and you can straighten/curl your hair to match your needs because it's real human hair. I ride a motorcycle and wear a helmet and my hair stays in tact. No worries. I also have to put my hair up when I go to school. You can't really put your hair up in a high pony tail, but a low one works just fine w/ the extensions. You can keep them on for up to 4 months but I'd recommend 3 because it grows out. You can go to the salon to have them removed for $20, but if you're man or girlfriend has enough patience then you could use pliers to remove the hair extensions =) I wish I could've donated my hair before I chopped it off, some one like me could've used it! read more

If you are on a budget and want to get hair extensions non-adhesie or that uses no glue, this is the place. The process really does not damage your hair. However, the quality of the hair varies. If you get wavy or bodywave, it is most probably that the hair will dry out faster as it has been processed more. If you stick with straight hair, you end up with better quality hair. The extensions never fall off or damage your hair, but sometimes they dry out fast. I also recommind getting a hair cut somewhere else. They are great for extensions an dvery affordable (hair and servcie is $250); but I never got a good haircut here. I usually go here to put or remove extension, and then I go get a hair cut with my favorite stylist. read more

This review is for Lisa. I originally see jenny in the Daly City location, and when I had called, Jenny was not available so Lisa came to Daly City to apply the hair extensions. Upon arrival, Lisa looked like she did not know what she was doing. Lisa began to apply the extensions but didn't even wash my hair, even while applying she was doing a very messy job, given I've had tape ins several times, I immediately realized she was doing it incorrectly. As I went home I began to realize how sticky my hair was, I kept thinking maybe the glue needs time to stick, boy was I wrong. Over half of my tape ins had fallen off the same night! I was outraged, I called Lisa first thing in the morning which she mentioned she didn't know why this was happening given she ALWAYS does hair extensions and none of her clients have experienced this. Lisa goes on to mention she will order this great glue that is coming from LA and rambled how she has to pay over 90$ in shipping fee's to get it in the next day. Ummm okay and that is my fault? Anyways long story short, I go in two days later and Lisa makes me pay the shipping fee of about 40$ since apparently it was my fault the extensions fell out, apparently since I color processed my hair earlier, my hair couldn't hold the tape. Now given that I have done this before, I knew that was not the case, the reason almost all fell out is simply because she did not wash my hair, and the glue she used simply did not hold at all. Lisa had to color match my hair, I watched her color the extensions and I'm assuming water went all over the tape. Now the second time around, the tape worked after she washed my hair and used better quality tape, nothing had fallen out. In addition, the second way around she was more cautious when it came to applying the hair, she took her time and straightened my hair and overall the application was not messy. Lisa couldn't own to her mistake, instead she blamed me and had me pay 40$ to cover he poor professionalism and lack of knowledge. OWN UP TO YOUR ERROR, DON'T BLAME THE CLIENT FOR YOUR FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER PROCEDURES. read more

I was referred by a good friend to Magic Touch San Mateo and was very pleased with the service from designer, Lisa Xu. She was very energetic, quick and gave me a nice hair color and cut. She is quite friendly and her beauty salon very nicely designed and large. I enjoyed the fact that normally when you color your hair, the product is on your hair for 45 minutes. Lisa has a heat treated machine that only takes 15 minutes to color your hair. She has a good eye and I like how she took years off and made me look younger with the hair style she gave me. My new hair style has length but she layered and tapered which it gave me more body and a more updated style. Definately a good fine and I would highly recommend Lisa's services. read more

Just like everybody else's story, i have gone to several stylists and not found a single one that brings about the kind of style that I want. But with lisa, she oftentimes disagrees with what I want, which I appreciates coz she knows bettter than I do but she always tries to better what I have pictured myself to look as an outcome. She's very personable and very professional. I also love her anti-frizz serum. I'm so sad. I came here because I saw so many pictures of girls with long hair. I didn't want anything more than a trim. I told the girl i wanted 1 inch trimmed off.. no more, because i had been growing my hair out for 3 years and i was really happy with the length, the ends were just starting to split. Well, the one girl shampoos my hair... she didn't use enough conditioner and when i went to the chair the other girl was ripping my hair out as she was combing it!!! it hurt.. i saw my hair getting ripped out of my head.. I should have just left then. She said my hair was dry. Hmmmm you are a hair dresser. .really? my hair is dry? so.. instead of conditioning it better.. you ripp it out..??? I told her i wanted the back straight across. I hate the pointed look. I told her no texturizing because it makes my hair look stringy. Well she trims the ends.. then trims the layers.. i'm pretty happy with it.. then she blow dries it and straightens it with a flat iron. So i'm like.. ok sweet.. and then she says she's not done.. ok .. so i watched as she started chopping away at the layers.. then she would re-trim the bottom .. chop at it some more.. re-trim the bottom. repeat repeat. When the cape came off and i stood up... i was about to cry. I'm not exaggerating at all. 5 INCHES were gone. AND its pointed in the back .. so if i want to get it fixed and have it cut straight across it's going to get even shorter! by another couple inches. I went from having long flowing hair.. sexy and sassy.. to having a "cute" hair cut. I will NEVER go back there and encourage those with long hair to be very cautious. I should have went to my hairdresser i usually go to, but i was kind of on the broke side. This place gives a shampoo, cut, and style for 35.. good price.. if you dont care how it turns out. btw i will add the layers are very even. I have gotten compliments on it. BUT it's definitely not what i asked for and it's going to take me a year to grow it back 5 inches. proceed with caution read more

If I could rate my experience a zero, I would. I had my hair cut here, not by Lisa though, but the new guy, who was rather nice, but definitely not touching my hair again. Firstly, he seemed to cut my hair such that there was hair all over my face and eyes. Then, he nearly burnt my ears while using the flat iron. Worst of all, my hair was lop sided! The left side was like 1 inch longer than the right - I had to cut off the extras myself after returning home. A total disaster. Nightmare. It took several months to grow out. Oh, and plus he also shaved my nape and gave me this totally weird fobby look. Sigh, and if you think it was cheap, I'll tell you it wasn't. Your money is better spent somewhere else. read more

The owner was very rude just because I wasn't a customer, A VERY BAD WAY TO CARRY ON BUSINESS. She wasted my time, energy and efforts. I had a confirmed appointment with her scheduled in the morning at the Magic Touch Salon. I show up 15 minutes early only to find the Salon still closed. I come back an hour and a half later and finally the shop is open. When I approached her she was very cold, unfriendly and dismissing. Just because I wasn't a customer, she didn't give me the time of day, but worse, she was very unprofessional and wasted my time. Apparently when I asked Lisa to trim one inch off she heard "please, oh please chop 3 inches off the hair I have been so patiently growing out" Mid cut I even reminded her to please not cut off too much. After she was done I had hair that I used to be able to easily grab by putting my hand behind my back to hair that sat just below my shoulders. I saw Lisa's extension work on a friend and I called her up to see if I could go in for a consultation. She took me in on the spot! I let her have creative carte blanche with my hair and she gave me an amazing color and colored the extensions the same. Then she washed, cut and styled my hair in no time flat. When I say that at least 3 people say how great my hair looks every day I'm being conservative. You'll be hard pressed to find someone as creative and reasonably priced for extensions anywhere!
