The family and I were looking for a good sandwich place while driving through Ohio. I chose this one partly because of all the Shiner references. I'm a native Houstonian and that tickled me. Went to Primo's on a Friday night. I would suggest an early or late dinner here on Friday. The place fills up fast! Primo's reminds me of a dive bar, that serves good food. Instead of bread, they fill a basket on your table with potato chips. They have a huge selection of subs and sandwiches. I would definitely come back to Primo's for lunch. The subs and sides are something different. Not just another Subway. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because the actual dinning area feels cramped. We couldn't hear one another because the couple next to us were talking to each other. There were kids running around and we were right in front of the chip rack, so I had to keep moving for the servers to get back behind me. My wife who has been coming here since 1987 finally had the worst experience ever. Food and service has been good but today took the cake. Waited for 20 minutes to get a chip refill and some ranch dip, my wife's New York Style pastrami came out looking like a hockey puck. Being from NYC myself this was clearly not NY style. So inedible she had to get the manager to get it sent back and have another one made. 2 waitresses there tonight and one was busy while the other one held conversations with other patrons and then making excuses as to why it took so long. To top off the night another 20 mins to get the check. I do enjoy going there because they do have a particular beer I like and the manager let me know when a new shipment comes in, however tonight's service was sub-par to say the least. read more

Better Half brought me here today after a busy morning; he's been here before because it's convenient to his office. Honestly if I'd been looking king for this place on my own, I don't think I'd have found it! It should be easy to see - it's on a rise above the road, kind of by itself (near a nearly empty old strip center), but nothing about the outside caught my eye. It's a good thing the strip center is half empty - I don't know where you'd park otherwise! This place gets BUSY, with good reason. I joked that they weren't going to let me in ("No Stupid People Allowed"), but we made it to a table with no issues. I was also gratified to see the "Guns Allowed" sign. Because....I'm weird like that, I guess. Anyway - terrific service right off the bat. And a bottomless basket of chips! That can be good or bad, depending on your perspective (and your waistline). But for those who say the prices are high? They're not. Factor in all those chips you're eating, the delicious food, the great service and I'd say this place is quite reasonable. I was delighted with my roast beef and cheddar on white with grated horseradish - almost perfect! All that was missing was a couple of slices of tomato and onion, but even without those it was excellent. Better Half had the salami with provolone, on toasted rye, and loved it. That's saying a lot because he asked for white bread and usually won't eat rye - turns out that was a great combo. The waitress brought our check in a timely manner and I guess we threw her off when we asked for dessert. We all had a laugh over that - the shock on her face was priceless! Turns out very few people ask for dessert at lunch, so it was frozen. That was perfect for us because we just wanted to take it home for later anyway. We didn't get any alcohol this trip but the beer selection is amazing. And how can this southern girl not love a deli that offers nearly all of Shiner's selections, AND Abita Springs beer as well?!? Be still my heart! (Did y'all know Shiner makes a lot more than Shiner Bock? They do!) (Now that I think about it, though, a few Lone Star Longnecks would nicely round out this collection.) Oh! The stars I've given are for the food only as every other aspect of this deli is disgusting and disappointing. Though it's a local legend, I will never eat there again. Parking is scarce, which doesn't bother me. Because of this, we parked behind the building. In order to enter, we had to walk past the kitchen door. The ground was filthy, covered in grease and garbage and cigarette butts, and smelled disgusting. It cannot be hard to power wash once a week, ensure garbage is disposed of properly, and provide employees with a receptacle for their cigarette butts. When we entered, it was clear the place is a dive. It is dark, cluttered, and crowded. I don't mind this so much. The sign said to seat ourselves, so we chose a seat back by the beer wall. The first employee we saw was a short, older woman with a permanent scowl and a large, open wound on the right side of her face near the jawline. If the woman were opposed to wearing makeup, she really needed to cover the wound with a bandaid...especially since she repeatedly picked at it during our visit. She approached our table and dumped the remainder of a bag of generic chips in a basket on our table. These were the very bottom, leftover pieces that are hard to eat. She stood about three feet from our table for our entire stay, which was much of the reason why our visit was terrible. She kept her personal belongings and a can of soda on the shelf along the wall with the chips, to go containers, and bus tub. The bus tub situation was especially unsanitary. All the dirty dishes went in a tub and the garbage was scraped into a small bucket. It filled frequently and was dumped in a trash can nearby, while additional dishes and garbage sat on the wall. I know space is at a premium, but tables should be bussed into the kitchen or at a proper bussing station. The bus girl never washed her hands and touched the baskets, wax paper in the baskets, and bags of chips with the same hands she used to carry dirty dishes and cups and to pick at her face. She needs gloves. We were very near the kitchen entrance and were able to see the employees carry food out from the kitchen. The first employee wore gloves, but no one else did. Because they hand carry, plates were often stacked on top of each other, cradled in elbows, held close to the body, and even had fingers up on or in the food. One server had her thumb in the salad she was running. These same people took orders, used a computer to place orders, and touched all surfaces in the restaurant without washing their hands or wearing gloves. This is incredibly unsanitary. I did see one woman handling the bread and wearing gloves, but the same man who rang out customers and handled money also handled dishes and ran food. Gloves or trays would solve this problem. The decor was old and used. The carpet worn, the table clothes torn. Not one employee was friendly to us. They all did their jobs pretty efficiently, but without any added niceties. I don't necessarily mind brusque service, if it's paired with a clean restaurant. This restaurant was filthy and their food handling practices leave a lot to be desired. The food definitely stood up to the reputation, but I won't return. read more

Primo's Deli is superb! I used to live in Ohio and recall fond memories of frequenting Primo's Deli with my family. The location is nice and the decor in the deli is your traditional "you never know what you'll see hanging on the walls". There is a lot of seating and you may be cramped slightly, based on how close the tables are. The menu includes something for just about everyone. I ordered the Grand Slam and it was fantastic! I have no complaints. I was able to share the sandwiches also ordered at my table and they were phenomenal! They have a wide range of beers (locally and international), so you'll never get bored with the same booze. They serve potato chips for you at the table and will refill them to your heart's content. Primos Deli. An Akron institution in my book! Ever get a hankering for a really awesome sandwich? This needs to be your spot the next time you do. Primos isn't a showy or fancy place. But it has character, charm, and if the walls could talk, they'd tell you so many amazing stories . The walls are lined with coolers full of beer, sodas, and other drinks. They serve you a bowl of chips instead of a bread basket. I only wish more places did that, because, chips! My husband and I always get the Reuben. It's stacked a mile high with corned beef. They do not skimp here. We've also tried various soups-- all very good. This is a place we enjoy bringing people that come visit us. It's off the beaten path a bit. The outside of Primo's looks like a place you go to buy bath salts or get stabbed, possibly both. I'm not from the area so I was reluctant to go inside, luckily my gamble paid off. I should start by mentioning that the deciding factor in my 5 star rating is their ample beer selection. Not only did they have the ever elusive Shiner Bock but they also had a Shiner seasonal brew (rare to find outside the great state of Texas). If you enjoy the occasional craft beer, you will be more than pleased with their selection. They have many sandwiches to choose from, because this was my first time I went with the most popular Spicy Italian Sub. As expected it fired on all cylinders from the bread and the ingredients down to the way it was prepared. The sub was toasted and the cheese melted to a crispy finish. The meat and toppings were perfectly balanced. I was in sandwich heaven... My wife ordered the Reuben, a robust entree you need a knife and fork to eat. Again this sandwich was balanced well, even with the sauerkraut overflowing from the sides. I almost forgot to mention the basket of ruffled deli chips you get as soon as you sit down. It's like a Mexican restaurant without the 50/50 chance of diarrhea afterward. I'm going to take Nicole K's suggestion and get the chip dip next time I go to Primo's (which will be in the near future). read more

Danielle and i had lunch at Primo's today. weird little place. some may look at the clutter within as quarky or even cute, but i wasn't a fan. i was, however, a fan of the food. I can't speak to Danielle's 1/2 Canadian Club Triple Decker - because i didn't try it - but she said it was good. I had the meatball sandwich and it was delicious. it was served on a perfectly toasted (really, perfectly) round kaiser bun w/ really good tomato sauce and melted provolone cheese. additionally, i had a side of potato salad that turned out to be really good, though maybe a bit too much dressing (i ate it with my chips). and i also had a cup of chili as a starter. it, too, was delicious. we've decided to put Primo's on our "Definitely if We're In The Area" list. i'd intended to go there and have a Chicago dog (w/ real Vienna beef hot dog) but decided I didn't need to eat that much. next time, possibly. there are so many things I'd like to try and also so many beers to try as well. read more

Definitely a fan. I was drawn to this place because I was noticing that lots of people were logging good beer in the Untappd ap (an ap that allows one to log all of their craft beer) so I wanted to check out their selection for myself. I was impressed with the bottle selection. Most of the other reviews emphasize the food... but honestly, this place is worth a stop if you want to make a 4 or 6-pack of craft beer. I'd say it rivals 101 Bottles of Beer in Kent or Mustard Seed in Highland Park for selection, however it is pretty disorganized. However, for me, that actually made it more fun. Both craft beers from the US and a good selection of non-US beers. Well done for beer! As for food, I'm probably not the world's most discriminating Deli critic. I had a tuna melt. It was terrific. I also liked the Chips on the table. I liked the all the beer signs and odds & ends. I spoke to the owner when paying and complimented him on his beer selection! I will absolutely be back. Came here looking for a new lunch spot that's local and different. And I definitely succeeded when I came here. First thing I noticed upon entering was the "guns are permitted" sign, which did worry me a little. Once I entered, I realized that I would be safe here because the crowd here is diverse...old, middle-aged, young, families, individuals, businessmen, and retired. The place is decorated with all sorts of coasters and sons of various beers. Mainly because this place sells and serves all sorts of beer along with deli meats and cheeses at the counter. Prices were for food was fair. They have so many options that it takes a little bit of time to figure out what to get. The staff is nice and attentive. If you're low on chips or water, they'll come by and happily refill. I got the chicken noodle soup which was tasty and had shell noodles...I should've gotten the bowl instead of the cup. Following that I got the spicy Italian sub. It was perfect...hot but not crispy; the cheese was perfectly melted to the salami and capicola. Surprised, which just those two items in my stomach, I was already full. Maybe next time I'll start with the desserts, which looked good. read more

Pretty Good! Came here for lunch today with the fiancé to try some yummy deli food. I liked the fast service when we entered, the unlimited potato chips and the HUGE variety of craft beers. The waitress took our order quickly, but I had to ask her 3 different times for a glass of water and we waited about 40 min for our food. I ordered cup of clam chowder with my sandwich and it didn't come out until after our sandwiches were served, only because I told them I never got it. Food was good and we got huge portions, but the wait staff seemed to forget us. Spicy Italian with their special hot mustard is one of the most incredible culinary delights to be found in Akron. The place has a great vintage feel that focuses on classic rock and beer. They always have good music playing and many concert posters, with a Jerry Garcia autograph behind the counter. People(staff) do not take themselves too seriously there, and seem to have fun with their jobs. One thing that cracked me up was a sign near the cash register that was advertising "free cute kittens". A few weeks later, cute had been crossed off the sign, leaving just "free kittens". A few weeks after that, the sign had been changed again to read, "free old cats". Random? Perhaps. But still a great place. read more

Benefits from being the only non-fast-food place in the area and I'm guessing people think it's kind of a "funky" place. To me, this place is overrated, but I honestly have not had the corned beef yet. I have only gone for lunch and wanted something "lighter." I had a tuna sandwich once and a spicy Italian another time. It kind of bugs me that they have no potato chips variety. Also, neither sub did much for me. Both of them were pretty bland and pretty overpriced. Spicy should probably include being spicy, ya know? I really like their hiring practices here! They seem to hire older people, as well as people with disabilities. However, service, to me, is unreasonably slow (for takeout) and I feel like the way they ring things up is goofy. I haven't read other reviews yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear others mention an attitude with some of the employees at this place. I had one person, in particular, who was being weird and accusatory about me not paying for my water. I tried to hand her a dollar and she tried to make me wait in line again to pay (after I'd waited 15 mins for a sandwich that should take 5, at most -- not busy either). Stumbled upon this spot when looking for a place to meet someone in this area. It's a little unassuming & a unique old-school feel. But they have a huge menu & friendly staff. I ordered the spicy Italian (minus mortadella) and it was perfect. Definitely not something to eat everyday, as Italian cold cuts aren't artery-friendly, but so good with the toasted sub.
