We stopped by on our way back to DC and were warmly greeted by Kate who managed our tasting. We shared a sweet flight tasting and Kate was very generous in her pours and descriptions of the varietals. Really friendly environment, expansive wine list, very reasonably priced and nice venue with several seating locations. Minus one star cause on the sweet list most are fruit wines (raspberry, blackberry, etc.) which are not our personal favorite, would have liked to have picked and chose from the larger list vs having set menu - but experience overrode any disappointment we had with the wine itself. This winery begs the question: Can there ever be too much of a good thing? The anwer may be: possibly. The other reviewers got it right. The winery pops up on the side of the road. If I had a tape measurer, I would have measured how far away it was from the road. The patio seating is very nice but please note the above paragraph... it faces a busy road. The winery does it's best to disguise that fact though once you are in the winery. The tasting room itself was quaint and had an unique gift shop with unusual items. My friends were sometimes more interested in the gift shop than the tasting and that says a lot for them, the wine hogs that they are! The tasting area itself was a circular, slate tasting counter. There were 11 of us and we easily took up half of the tasting space. I am betting that Prince Michel gets packed quickly. And considering that the pourers recommend a 1-1/2 to 2 hour block of time for the tasting, they are bound to run out of room quickly. There could be another tasting area elsewhere but we didnt' see it. The pourers obviously were busy with our group and the other people who came in. They remained pleasant, cheerful and professional. There is a complimentary wine tasting for 17 wines plus you can opt-into a reserved tasting of seven more for $5. Back to my earlier question, is too much of something a bad thing? In my case, yes. Looking through my tasting notes, there are only a handful out of the 17 wines that I considered drinkable. Most of the others had a weird, bitter aftertaste for me. I liked the Symbius and the Peach (good summer wine that truly tastes/smells like peaches). The Rose and the Tres Bien weren't bad either. I also found the reserve wines to have a bitter aftertaste. My favorite of that group was the Crown Orchard Cabernet Sauvignon. It's not that I dislike this winery... far from it. I just have very mixed feelings. The complimentary tasting is a great option for someone who wants to do a wine tasting without a hefty tasting fee. However, I would have a hard time recommending a drive specifically to this winery, unless you are visiting other wineries in the area. read more

I love Prince Michel. I just celebrated my wedding here with approx 100 friends and family members and could not have asked for a better atmosphere! The wines were wonderful and in abundance and Brad, the event coordinator, was fabulous. I have been going to Prince Michel for years to hang out and enjoy the setting but was beyond happy at the service I received from everyone involved. I would host an event here anytime, especially because I got nothing but positive feedback from all my guests. Love PMV! P.S. Honestly, this is probably the worst vineyard in Virginia. I threw up immediately after eating some of the pepperoni pie/pretzel. The staff is really friendly, so it's not their fault, but there are a ton of gnats in the building that fly into your cups and are flying around your personal space. The food is not good. The wine is heavy and doesn't taste high quality (I've had much better $2.99 wine from Trader Joe's). The staff again, is lovey, but don't waste your time here. I got very sick from the food and just don't recommend this to anyone. There's much better with a more beautiful ambiance elsewhere nearby. read more

We have been Founders Club members of this winery for over 5-years and have found the wines delightful in taste and robust in flavors. The Symbius is one of the better Northern Virginia wines we have found along with the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon. Beautiful grounds and building! A bit confusing when you walk in-it's huge but straight ahead the tastings/gift shop area. Nice self guided tour of wine processing area-very nice to see! Wines are pricey for full tasting. $10 for one $10 basically for another run and $8 for sweet-so to do all is $28! Wow...a bit high and then some. We did sweets some good some syrupy. We stopped here because of the really cool wine glass statue/mobile structures in the front. That was perhaps the best part of our experience. Our taste testing was marred by the annoying, almost obnoxious, person who was serving us. She spent entirely too much time trying to entertain us and planning her break for that evening. The wine was ok, nothing special. Some of the fruit varieties just tasted like over priced fruit juice. read more

Poor taste and tourist trap, this is not a stop for anyone who is looking for an experience or tasteful wine. Whatever I could have said about the wine has been blocked out by the obnoxiousness of the service. Our server moved between our group and another pair, wasting a lot of our time with talking about herself. Home of the first wine slushy I've ever had (and the best one since I've had nasty ones since at other wineries). Cute tasting room overlooking the self-guided tour area. The bar area looks to be a great party spot, although we came during a weekday morning when it was dead. Nice decor, cute gift shop, friendly generous pourer who was more than willing to give her honest (and professional) opinion of other wineries near by as well as recommendations of places not to miss. we were driving though on the way to charlottesville and saw this on the side of the road, so we decided to stop and try it. we didn't know much about virginia wines, so there was no expectation. the tasting was mostly free, but they charged a dollar for some select wines. they were very generous with the liquid. i am giving them five stars solely on their extraordinary merlot. the texture was so silky smooth. the aroma of fruits were abundant and the taste was delicious. read more

I always pass this place when heading south on Rte 29 so finally I stopped in to have a tasting. They offer 10 samples of the wine of your choice for $5. The glass is not included. The wine was so-so with some good, such as the semi-sweet Riesling. The place has a nice interior with sitting areas and many interesting items to see. It's worth a trip. read more

Just finished a tour and tasting as part of a Massanutten resort bus trip. Tour was interesting aside from the young female tour guide's extremely annoying repetition of her favorite phrase "well, with that being said...". If we had sipped wine every time she used that line, we would have had to be carried to the bus. Prince Michel Winery is the most disappointing winery I've been to in the region. I've been three times to try all three of their tasting flights, and while it's usually crowded (likely due to the location along Rt 29), the service is generally poor (you have to wait in line to do a tasting, and the employees may or may not notice you're there), most of the wine is not local (or even regional), and none of the wines are what you'd call "good." If you like very sweet wines that have more of a Boones Farm feel, you'll find a few decent ones here, but if you're a real wine lover, your time (and money) would be better spent elsewhere. read more

It's a lovely winery. There is some indoor seating and a front patio. They have a long list of wines and you get to choose 10 for your tasting. Because of this format, make sure you show up AT LEAST 40+ minutes before they close because things turn into a mad house near closing time. read more

I stayed at the cottages and had a magical weekend. The cottage is so spacious and the bath is very relaxing. You get a free bottle of wine each night you stay which makes the whole setup very affordable. Will definitely be going back. read more

I'm actually very surprised by the relatively good recommendations that Prince Michel has been receiving. I'm certainly not a wine snob, but I found the quality of the wine to be frankly terrible. Iand almost everybody else in my tasting group emptied our glasses in the spitoon on every round. Also a matter of opinion, but I felt like the whole operation was very commercial. It lacked any hint of authenticity or charm. I believe that only one of their wines is actually grown on site. So it barely qualifies as a vineyard. Given the shear number of different varietals and types of wines on offer, I wasn't surprised that no single wine was very good. Even the name, Prince Michel, from what I gathered in the small tour/hallway, seems to be a purely commercial consideration, with no link to any individual prince, nor any local history, nor really anything at all. The staff was friendly enough, but that just wasn't enough to compensate for the bad product. read more

A nice place to stop and taste wine. Very friendly and informative staff. They didn't act like wine snobs. All of our questions were answered thoroughly and politely. It's a great deal (by California standards). 15 tastes for five dollars. It's an excellent place for beginner wine testers - because it is so unpretentious. We enjoyed every wine we tasted. We came here for valentine's day yesterday. We came in and they have a really comfortable ambiance. A lot of very comfortable chairs everywhere. When you go in, it isnt very clear on what to do or where to go so, you kind of have to ask. It would be nice if they had a staff member greeting customers and answering questions as they are coming in. We finally figured out that they were having a wine tasting and had to purchase tickets at the register. Once in the wine tasting the lady talking about the diffrent chocholate and wine pairing was very new, in fact she explained that it was her first day. She seemed a bit flustered and in my opinion it would have been great to have someone more experienced with her as she is training. I do have to say they have a beautiful selection of wines that we did enjoy, and we will definitely visit again. Its a bit on the pricey side but it is worth spending :) read more

The only good thing about this tasting is that it is free. First of all, there is no ambiance at all. You can see the highway from the building, and the tasting room is in the middle of a giant gift shop. Their "wine cellar" looked like a large stock room with only a few steel and oak barrels sitting in it and they don't even grow most of their grapes on site so there is little to no vineyard to be seen at all. Second, all of their wines were TERRIBLE. The petit manseng had a very skunky nose and didn't taste much better, the viognier tasted more like vinegar than wine, and if they hadn't told me I was tasting a cabernet I would have thought it was a very weak merlot. I would not recommend Prince Michel's Winery to anyone. read more

First experience was a Christmas celebration, it was well done. Second visit, not a special occasion and I found service to be poor and wine mediocre. I was with an Asian girlfriend, I believe we were profiled. Servers at the wine sampling station tried to pretend we weren't there, though a group of anglo twenty-somethings were well served. When I demanded service, they were still not helpful. I bought one round and would have considered trying another glass. But when it was apparent they were still not interested, I decided to press on to Charlottesville where choices were better and Asian customers are appreciated. read more

On the way back to DC from Charlottesville we planned to stop by here for a free tasting and to hopefully purchase a bottle of cab. After arriving to the free tasting bar, we saw that it was pretty full so we stood at the front of the counter waiting. None of the servers ever stopped to ask if we needed help. One of the ladies kept looking at me and turning her head away. It was kind of bizarre and pretty rude. Every time another customer went to the front to pay or to ask a question any one of those ladies would immediately turn their attention to him/her. When I finally did catch one of their attentions, her response was that I would have to keep waiting for a spot but there were only 35 minutes left till closing. I was mostly put off by the rude service, we ended up just leaving sans vino. The actual vineyard and winery looked really nice, but I guess I'll never know how good their wine is. read more
