She's a total sweetheart, easy to talk to, and genuinely listens to (and does) what you want. I was happy to follow her to Prive by Laurent D, and relieved to see that the salon maintains a downtown, fashion-forward look despite its location. I've tried 20+ high-ranking Manhattan salons (from Bumble and Bumble, Dop Dop, and Alibi to smaller boutique salons like Whistle and Arte). Every single visit was a complete disappointment, not to mention waste of money. Well, my search is FINALLY over! I have been seeing Li @ Prive for years now -- since she was working @ Beehive in Brooklyn. Prive is definitely an upscale experience, but this review is strictly for Li. She's absolutely wonderful, gives the best dry curly cuts (and I have very curly 3c hair), and the best part is that she listens. Curly girls know that it's so important to find a person who listens and will only cut off what is necessary otherwise you NEVER see length. I'm not the hugest fan of the products at the salon, but I do my own research ahead of time and request the ones that I think are best suited fo my hair. The salon is inside the Sherry-Netherland hotel so it is a bit hard to find, and not visible from the street. read more

I went to Jimmy to get color / balyage done, and absolutely loved it! I am a dark brunette, and wanted to brighten my look by getting caramel / honey / brownish balayage look. At the same time, I was very wary of using bleach / lightner in my hair to achieve it. Jimmy was a total sweetheart. He listened to me, and first just put in color to see if it would lift. It didn't so then we used a bit of lightener with the color. We washed it out and styled it, and I walked a happy girl out with light brown tones to my hair. However, I kept looking it over a couple of days and wanted it to be lighter to include those caramel tones along with the brown ones I had. So I called and was scheduled me in for a re-do. This time around, he explained to me that we definitely needed to add in lightner and not to be worried, it'll still look great and feel soft. I walked out this time around with great caramel tones. Loved working with Jimmy, and the entire staff at Privet (reception) - everyone was super flexible, understanding and sweet! Will definitely reccomend Jimmy to fellow virgin hair brunettes. read more

It's definitely much more fancypants than what I'm used to, but as my dad always says, sometimes you've got to live a little. The second you step in, you're treated like royalty. After they offer you a fancy beverage, you get the most relaxing hair wash / head massage... which kind of makes the whole experience worth it right there. About the Haircut: I've been getting my hair cut with Adi for a few years now, and he has become an incredibly good friend of mine. What makes Adi different than other stylists is his passion, not just for hair, but for people. He gets to know his clients and creates a look that matches their personality. Each time I get my hair cut, I show him the same picture of what I generally want. He adjusts the style based on my face shape, then adds what I can only describe as magic, every time. It's subtle, but the perfect touch. I kid you not, each haircut I get with Adi, I get more and more compliments. So if you ever need an ego boost... you know what to do. About the $$$: If the price tag scares you, think of it this way... the way Adi cuts my hair, I only need to go twice a year, as opposed to 3-4 times. I love coming to Prive to get my hair done! It is such a lovely, calming, and relaxing atmosphere that is a gem in the Sherry Netherland Hotel. When you walk in you are promptly greeted by the front desk, typically Kyle, who always gets me right in (not to mention I'm usually right on time to 5 minutes late, ugh.) There is a lovely lady who gets you settled into a smock, and then you are on your way to your stylist's chair. And did I mention, they offer you a nice beverage, from water to espresso! I've had my beautiful blonde done by Christopher John who, by the way, has taken me from a hot mess, damaged, broken blonde, into something that is on the verge of Madonna-esque. When I came in for my first consultation, I was afraid, as I had been battered and broken, but the second he started talking to me about what our immediate plan and long term plans were going to be, I felt immediately at ease. Christopher has such a soothing voice, and works with a hand of gentleness and caring. It has been such a pleasure working with him, turning my hot mess back into beautiful, icy blonde with no damage. And yes, thank goodness, he used Olaplex at every treatment (if you are a blonde you know what Olaplex does for the condition and health of your hair.) After my lovely double process blonde, I get treated to the styling by Jordan Sparkes. The first time I saw Jordan, my hair was so broken, full of split ends, well more like split clear up to the middle of my head. I knew what had to be done, but I was fearful of cutting my hair. I knew it was doing me no favors in its current state. Initially he trimmed what he could without completely removing my security blanket, but this last time, since my hair was looking better with the exception of the last 2 inches, I had him cut most of it away. I had so much breakage from before in my frontal area, that essentially I had bangs. Never in a million years would I have ever gotten bangs on purpose, but thanks to Jordan, he took all that breakage and made it into something that was beautiful, a-la Debbie Harry. I have been getting my hair cut by Adi for two years so when he moved to Prive, it was an easy decision to follow him there! I have wavy, thick hair that's tough to manage especially in humid weather but Adi knows exactly how to cut it so that it's easier to manage and stays in shape for months after a haircut. I started going to him when my hair was well below shoulder length and now have a shorter bob and he's been very comfortable working with both lengths. Last week I had colour put through my hair at a different salon for the first time in years and I was uneasy with how it turned out; it was very stripy and the highlights I had done turned out grey. After struggling to find a hairdresser in NYC for a year and a half, I can say I've finally found her. I had an appointment this afternoon with Katy for the first time to help me with my colour. I was extremely nervous, worried I was about to spend even more money on my hair but I tried to keep positive and was praying to the hair gods that Katy could help me. After a consultation and some picture reviews of what I was aiming for, Katy said it was no problem - she understood what I wanted and knew how to do it with the current mess I had in. Jiwon has been cutting my hair for almost ten years now! She's great and I trust her to make my hair look best. I get many compliments on my hair and I thank her for that. I've got a lovely blend of a ton of fine hair so layers are important, but not too layered or it will be too wispy and Jiwon knows the perfect balance. Also, recently Jiwon has started to do color as well, which I'm excited about. I've tried out highlights with her and it's worked out great with no allergic reactions to the dye she uses on me. I have many allergies so I'm so glad this is working out. In years past with other colorists, I've always had bad allergic reactions with scalp itchiness and facial skin breaking out. Also on the topic of allergies, I've not had a reaction to their shampoo/conditioner they used on me and I usually have to use baby shampoo/conditioner. I don't often write reviews, but after paying $715 and leaving in tears I thought I should. First time I got highlights with Christopher in January - I wasn't thrilled after asking to even out my tone and make it ash to end up with uneven yellow-ish highlights that cost around $500. After I wasn't happy, he fixed it with glaze and toner and my hair looked very nice. I came back in April for touch up highlights, asked 4 (!!!) times to make sure we do the glaze and toner like last time and was assured by Christopher and technician that it would be / had been done. I also asked for partial highlights not to damage hair more and save money (turned out they cost almost the same as full head). Once I saw the results I was shocked - there was a stripe of lighter hair from the roots down a few inches - partial highlights mark, my hair looked yellow and not shiny. I asked to fix it, after the toner it still looked terrible. And after I was done and paid for partial highlights and a simple hair trim $700+, it turned out that everybody left the salon at 6:04 pm on Sat and there was nobody to blow out my hair. So I left with damp hair... I realize that mistakes and screw ups happen, but when I specifically reminded multiple times of the past mistake and it happened again and the customer service was so awful, I can't justify the prices. read more

You enter through a beautiful Fifth Ave Hotel and then walk into a serene salon. I really appreciated that Katy was able to provide suggestions about what would look good on me and then beautifully execute her plan without much instruction from me. Prive wouldn't be as AWESOME as it is without Willie...and the excellent service throughout! The Salon is beautiful, elegant, welcoming, modern, and buzzing with the latest beats! My first time to Prive was just a couple weeks ago, as I followed my stylist, Willie, there. My usual services are a balayage with a cut and blowout and the results are always excellent. Willie will say he is OCD when it comes to coloring/cutting, and honestly, I don't think the results would be as beautiful if he wasn't. I just started coloring my hair a year ago, so I was naturally very nervous. Willie extinguished those fears for me immediately.
