I had heard great things about this buisness, but, I was treated poorly and after spending almost $10,000 am very dissatisfied. I took my 1984 GMC truck in ( which I've been restoring ) in for repairs and work. The first time I took it in they chipped my brand new paintjob. When I brought it to their attention they seemed offended with one of their workers saying as he walked away " Jesus, its just a old truck ". Here is my other list of complaints. No. - They installed brand new headlights and the don't even shine on the road. No. 2- They installed brand new backup lights in my rear bumper and left the bare wires just hanging with no tape or wire nuts. Didn't bother to hook them up. No. 3- They installed brand new trim around my brand new grill and instead of trimming to fit just overlapped the pieces. Looks very cheap. No. 4- They installed brand new cab lights and now I have a leak inside my cab. No. 5- The same cab lights, they installed a switch inside the cab instead of wiring it to the headlight switch like its supposed to. The hot wire going to the switch instead of being connected is just jammed in and any time you touch it it sparks. No. 6- They made new keys for the door locks and you had to work at least a minute to get them to work. I took it back and they said they fixed it and it would loosen up. Now, it still takes considerable time to open the drivers side and the passenger door won't unlock at all. Also, the electric switch ( they installed ) won't open the passenger side. No. 7- They called me and said that my brand new dash cover in the box was bent and wouldn't fit. I bought a brand new one and when I asked for the old one so I could return it for a refund was told they threw it away. No. 7- I was missing to storage lockers of parts. When I asked where they were the manager told his technician said he put them in the back of my truck and I must have lost them. We argued and he told me I was welcome to walk through the shop and look. I found them within 5 minutes stacked on top of each other sitting against a pole. No. 8- Same thing, I had bought two ( brand new ) steps for the truck as it is lifted, They said they couldn't install them. When I went to pick them up they said I already picked them up and I must have " thrown them in the back of my truck and they bounced out in the mile from their shop and my home. No. 9- They installed two ( brand new ) gas gauge sensors. When they didn't work I took it back and they said they fixed them. They didnn't. While driving six blocks from my home to the store my engine died. My gas gauge showed more than a quarter of a tank. I had to ( in rush hour traffic push the truck 50 yards into a parking lot. Other motorists helped me. I didn't think to check the gas tank because they said THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM. I had to pay $80.00 for a tow five blocks to my home. ​ I tried to discuss all this with the manager and he became argumentative and dismissive. When I asked to speak to the owner ( Mike Christoferson) he refused to let me. Since then, I have sent a Registered Letter to Mr. Christoferson at Pro Tek office and haven't heard a word back. Also, sent a message to his Facebook page and still haven't heard anything. Their website is very proud of the fack that they repair high end luxury cars and certified antique cars. I guess my old pickup truck wasn't worth their time. I tried to refrain from writing a bad review so we could handle it like grownups and people of honor but find their ignoring me very offensive. Time to talk to a lawyer I guess. read more

My car's registration was due for renewal, and therefore had to have an emissions test. Previously I went to a state DEQ emissions testing location several miles away and spent 30-45 minutes in a long line of cars waiting my turn, but this time I saw that they have several private "DEQ TOO" locations much closer. Although most charge an additional $20-50 fee for this service, Pro Tek was one of the only ones on the list that does it for FREE and WITHOUT an appointment needed (it only takes a few minutes). For that alone they get 5 stars and I'll definitely consider them for service needs in the future. read more

I took my old school 78 cutlass to protek to get some work done and they promise me that they order all new parts to fix my car then I haven't drove the car since they worked on it and I looked at my back shocks and springs that they were supposed to replace and it was old rusted parts on there that has been used and plus the charge labor for each job instead of a overall fee which was 700 in parts and 2600 in labor which is ridiculous for old parts they put on the car. read more

One of the biggest things I look for in a shop is customer service and trust and unfortunately my experience with ProTek and my vehicle ended up being extremely unprofessional. I want to start off by saying I believe that they did quality work (but they definitely have certain types of vehicles they prefer working on) and hope that my experience was just a one off. To bring some context to the situation, I had taken my vehicle in after I had done some work on it myself to check on an issue that had arisen, a loud scraping and grinding noise that was unidentifiable. I had done my own research and given my opinion, but wanted an experts advice on the repair and what followed was very frustrating and ended up costing me thousands of dollars for what ended up a less than hundred dollar part and fix at another shop. I spent probably 6+ months being in and out of the shop multiple times, and being told every time I picked up my car "the problem is fixed." Yet every time I drove off the lot there was no difference and the issue had not been fixed. I kept bringing the car back, had multiple ride alongs with techs and just felt that there was a disconnect happening between what the front desk was saying vs the actual problem. At this point is where I feel like they became very unprofessional, it felt like they didn't want to work on the car, or were willing to help. I was promised that I would get recommendations on what to work on next, that they were working on a solution and would go WEEKS without a phone call, update and again continued to take my car in and being told it was fixed and driving off the lot with the same issues. The last time I asked to bring it in, I was told I was going to get a phone call back and an update on the situation and then was ghosted. I had to call back weeks later and then was told, sorry we aren't going to fix anything anymore, please take it to another shop. Herein lies my biggest frustration and what I felt was a super unprofessional experience. I would have rather been told we can't identify the issue from the beginning rather than being taken on a 6 month rollercoaster, spend thousands of dollars, never being called back or updated on my vehicle and then being told sorry bring it somewhere else AFTER I spent the money trying to fix it at their shop. I ended up not taking their recommendation and taking it to my old shop and tech in the city I was previously in, they told me it was a less than hundred dollar fix, had it fixed in less than a week and has been noise free since. Which opened another set of frustrations with me and kept me wondering if Pro Tek had actually been trying to fix the solution. I hope this was a one off experience, they seem like good people. Lauren at the front desk was helpful at times, but seem to over sell the customer service and there was always disconnect and a promise that never happened. ProTek seems to prefer to work on certain vehicles and that's okay, I would have rather been told that they didn't feel comfortable finding a solution on my vehicle than being led on a rollercoaster of dead ends. read more

Do not give this place your business. They are inept at what they do, your car will be with them for weeks or months and when you finally pay an absorbent amount of money to get it back, it will be half assed at best and when the same thing fails again in a couple of months and take it back to them because you will stupidly believe they might have some sort of honor to guarantee their work, they will find some way to weasel out of taking care of you and expect you to pay up again. Don't take your vehicle to protek, not ever. They are liars and thieves, at this point, imo. They lied to us. I had Pro-tek automotive do a pre-inspection on a vehicle before purchase. I said I was willing to put a few thousand into car but if it was more than that I wouldn't purchase car. They said ok, and that they would be ready to give me report in a few days. Few days later I took time off work to meet them to go over inspection. The tech got in vehicle with me and drove around. He seemed absolutely clueless to the issues I suggested they look into out the gate. I brought this up two days prior when I talked on phone (I.e. oil leaks I saw during test drive, and smoke from leaks). So the tech talks to front desk guy, and 20 mins later they write up a ticket to replace all valve leaks for $2,200. I'm thinking not bad. So I trust that's all I need to do to car and she's good. So I go back to dealer pay $18k for car. Dealer said they'll go to pro-tek to pick up car and deliver to my address. 45 mins later dealer calls me to say the battery is dead... My first thought was maybe I left something on and battery died between me driving and dealer pick up. So I thought nothing of it, just another $200 dollar battery. Fast forward 24 hrs... I find out a ton of issues with car that will likely lead to additional costs. Needs new alternator, transmission has issues if I run for more than 5/10 mins (can't put into 1st gear), oil leaks, and gas can leak from can to fuel pump.... How did they miss all this on pre inspection unless they never did a pre inspection. They collected my $350 for payment knowing either the problems and not telling me... or just flat out charging me for something they never did! I now own a car that doesn't run (bad fuel pump or gas can pressure) and is continuing to have problems arise. I purchased the car around July 25th 2022, and today Sept. 27th 2022, the car sits in my garage with over $8k in repairs pro-tek measurably failed to inspect. This shop is why a lot of people can't trust mechanics. Gut wrenching.... P.S. I did call other mechanics, and they said my situation seemed very unprofessional. They also mentioned the timing of all my issues and said there's no chance all these things would have passed inspection if they popped up within 48 hrs of initial inspection. I did not find out about transmission issues until alternator was fixed a few weeks ago (meaning shop should have at least mentioned alternator, and mentioned they couldn't complete a full inspection). read more

I took my 1966 Corvette Stingray Classic Convertible Restomod to Mike and his crew after the strong recommendation of an experienced 'Car Guy' friend of mine. I purchased the car at an auction in January 2020, and due to COVID and other factors was not able to actually drive it until early June. It had several 'dead battery' issues involving electronics which another shop was unable to solve. Additionally the driver's door lock was broken. Mike was absolutely the BEST! My biggest concern was the inaccuracy of all the electronic gauges (likely from a prior dead battery). Mike contacted both the car builder and Dakota Digital, and got everything working accurately again. No more worries about overheating a very rare car! He went over every square inch of the car, tighten bolts, and made other adjustments I was not even aware of. Additionally there was a small leak in the gas filler assembly which he diagnosed and quickly fixed. He was a complete gentleman and continually updated me on the progress of my car. I'll never visit another automotive repair shop while living in Portland, and the service was so good I felt compelled to leave my very first Yelp review! I started a new job last week and the day before my first day, my partner noticed that my car's engine wasn't turning over on the first try when trying to start the car. I was so worried, and had visited Pro-Tek for my DEQ Too test and had a good experience so called them up. Not only did they quickly diagnose the problem, but they talked me through everything and they took it seriously when I said I was starting a new job. They did a partial repair so I could make it to work and back (safely of course) until the other part my car needed arrived. When it did they immediately let me know and worked with me so that I could make the repair work with my new 9-5, even though it meant one of the technicians staying a little late. My wife went in for an oil change and a gas cap replacement. Manager recommended everything under the sun. Unfortunately my wife took the bait. That would have been fine except as we found out later their prices are 48% higher than other non-dealer BMW certified mechanics in PDX. Example is charging $206 for a battery plus another $110 for install!!! I called Kuni BMW to find out how much they charged and they quoted me $75. If you thought the BMW dealer was expensive, you haven't seen Pro-Tek's prices. BTW, 2 other certified BMW mechanics didn't charge an installation/registration fee. I called to speak to the manager. His justification was more of less was that he had more overhead. his exact words were "have you been to our location? we don;t work out of a basement like other mechanics" read more

3 months later my motor starts whistling while stepping on pedal. I take the van into meineke for a smoke test. A leaking exhaust manifold is the culprit for the whistle. No wonder boost wasn't achieving max psi, and also limp mode turned on, van was chugging loud like a train. I took it to respected vw shop in sacramento. They found exhaust manifold nuts and bolts improperly installed. They found exhaust manifold leak They were horrified by how protek repaired my van while they had it for a week in January. I was in a rush and running short on time getting ready for a roadtrip with my friend down to Vegas for a gathering of MINIacs/enthusiasts and a few parts came in late. I called around to a few shops but either most were booked up (being race season and all) or the estimate was out of the range I was aiming for. I called Pro-Tek and talked to Mike, who is the owner, and was able to get in to see him the very next day, which happened to be the day before I was planning to head out to Vegas. The parts in question were a downpipe and the other was an upgraded spring to the blow off valve/diverter valve. I had worked at the downpipe, but was unsuccessful with the lower heatshield to get the downpipe out and the spring had not yet arrived. Not only did Mike and his team take care of the downpipe and upgraded spring, but they also pointed out that the oil line for the turbo was leaking and after checking with me on the parts and update on the labor quote, replaced that as well. This was greatly appreciated with the extra level of attention and detail, as this could have cost a lot more down the road and possibly impacted the drive to Vegas, while there, or the trek back to PDX. I wholeheartedly recommend Mike and his team at Pro-Tek. Head into the shop and you will see a great deal of enthusiast vehicles, everyday cars for maintenance, and an all-in-one stop for detailing in addition to all the other services offered through his affiliate Gallagher Auto Spa. Mike is an intelligent and personable mechanic who doesn't tell you what he thinks you want to hear, but what you need to hear. His rates were much better than those at another local shop I had taken my Honda to. It was after consulting with Mike that I realized I had been screwed. Ugh. I bought a Groupon for Pro-Tek after being told that I had a break light out. I also knew that I needed an oil & filter change, probably new wiper blades and a general inspection of my vehicle. I don't drive much (I'm at 61,000 miles in 11 years), so I also don't have it serviced often. I was a little disappointed that they weren't open on weekends, but luckily I have weekdays off occasionally as well. The shop is very clean, and I really liked Mike and his crew. We went through what I knew needed to be done, and requested that they take a look at my transmission and do an overall check. They share space with Luxe Autohaus, so I went to their waiting area where they have a great massage chair. There are also a good number of restaurants and food carts within short walking distance if you want to grab lunch while you wait. It did take 3.5 hours for everything to be done, but I had 2 lights changed, a transmission flush and fill, an oil and filter change, all wiper blades replaced, and a very thorough inspection. They didn't have the wiper blades in stock, so part of the wait was due to them having them delivered. My Groupon was for $100, and I only paid an additional $130 for everything that they had done. I feel the price was very fair. They told me that I will need to have my rear brakes done in the next few months, but they weren't trying to get me to do it right away. I didn't feel that they were trying to sell me services that I don't need (unlike places like Oil Can Henry's, they're horrible!). I also have piece of mind that the car is in good working order after a good going through which is worth every penny! read more

Scheduled a service to get my car checked out after purchase, plus I hit something, and knew car needed an alignment. Place has high reviews elsewhere, I figure "Okay, good stuff, let's get it in." Make appointment, explain what I need, all should be well. We take in the car and drop it off. Walk to Voodoo Doughnuts (bonus). Car is pulled in right away. We're thinking, "Wow! This will be a painless, easy experience!" Wrong. After hanging out at Voodoo for 45 minutes, the car hadn't been touched. Whomever we dropped the car off with then asks, "So what do you want done to the car?" It'd just been sitting there, no one touched it, and for the second time, we explained what we came in for. Guy says, "Cars don't really get tune-ups anymore. So what you're asking for is a 30,000 mile check up." It was almost funny, considering the following is directly lifted from Pro Tek's website: An average full service TUNE-UP at Pro-Tek costs about $110 to $425. The service includes all basic fluid, replacement of spark plugs, all filters complete brake inspection, checks for leaks, cooling system checks and a free safety check. Regardless, I needed a tune up and probably an alignment, which they then state will take 4 hours. Sorry, we'll take it somewhere else. Oddly enough, within 48 hours of taking our business elsewhere, all four tires are mysteriously leaking. Maybe a coincidence, but eh. Regardless, we won't be back. read more

I was able to get in without an appointment, and I was out within 5 minutes with my DEQ results! Very friendly guy who was helpful and informative. Full disclosure: My dealership is located adjacent to Pro-Tek, and I have a working relationship with this business. You should always meet people in person to get a better handle on how you feel about them, so I don't expect this review to be your sole data point in your decision to hire a new mechanic. I do have a lot more experience with the local German, Japanese, and European mechanics in town than your average car owner, though (because I do a lot more volume, and I've been able to see patterns of behavior (deception/upsells/general disingenuity) that you wouldn't see if you visited a shop only once or twice a year). I think this review will help a lot of peopIe avoid frustrating situations, but take it with the caveat that I do business with them. My review is genuine nonetheless, and I'm writing it because they were the answer to my frustrations. I own a car dealership that specializes in BMWs, and Mike Christopherson has been my dealership's go-to mechanic for about six years now. He started working on BMWs at Kuni BMW in Beaverton, but I met him when he worked as the lead BMW tech at Pacific Motorsports on Powell; we were a big account for Pacific, and he was our point of contact. He was always very thorough, but realistic in his inspections of our cars. He would give us a list of "must-do" items as well as a complete (with measurements) list of all the important used car metrics (brake pads and rotors, tire tread, filter condition, etc.). Mike left Pacific Motorsports to start Pro-Tek about four years ago, and we followed him because we trusted him. For three and a half years, we ferried our cars six miles out to his Clackamas location (despite the fact that Boyd Motorwerks, another local BMW shop, is literally across the street from us) and back, and he never failed to please us. When I moved my dealership down the street to 17th and Sandy last fall, I lobbied Mike and his partner, Bob Wescott, to move into the space next to us. We get the same great service now, but we don't have to drive our cars as far. Pro-Tek uses genuine OEM parts, and they've got relationships with local suppliers to ensure that most parts they don't have in inventory are a next-day delivery; they're exceedingly honest in their diagnoses, and won't try to upsell you shamelessly; when they work on your car, they stand behind their work: if something they did breaks, they fix it immediately. More importantly, Pro-Tek has invested heavily in specialized tooling and diagnostic equipment -- in fact, they are one of only a handful of shops in the Northwest (including BMW franchise stores) that have the factory BMW GT1 scanner that can communicate natively and bi-directionally with your BMW and both correctly diagnose it as well as program it. Always ask your shop if they have the correct tools for your modern computerized car -- if you don't, you'll be paying for them (by the hour) to learn what's wrong by trial and error. A cheap code-reader costs a shop (or anyone) about 85 bucks; a properly-licensed BMW GT1 costs a little more than 100 times that, and you're not even allowed to buy one unless you're a properly credentialed BMW technician. My dealership spends $15-$25,000 every month getting our vehicles ready for sale. We've tried the vast majority of Euro-car mechanics in Portland, and Mike Christopherson is the best. In the course of my trial-and-error search, I've had cars inspected by multiple shops for a second and third opinion. You'd be amazed (and probably disgusted) at the differences in the amount of work I've been quoted for cars that are in exactly the same condition. Mike is the only guy who has been consistently willing to show me exactly why he recommends the service he's quoted, and he's shown me point blank that other shops have flatly lied to me. He's made mistakes, of course, but fixed them promptly; he has occasionally delivered a car to us a day later than he originally promised, but always with good reason; he's a regular person like the rest of us. Mike's great strength, beside the fact that he's a phenomenally gifted mechanic, is that last thing -- no matter what your knowledge level, he'll treat you like a fellow person. STEALership said Valve stem seals would cost $10,000 , yes that's TEN THOUSAND dollars, saying they needed to pull the engine out to do it (which is absolute bullsh*t). Mike did it for $3500 in two days with the engine in the car. Always honest, always friendly, and always treats my mother in law with tons of respect. Can't ask for more. Customer for life. I came into Pro-Tek with a Groupon and was expecting a sub-par experience (as can be the case when using Groupons). Instead they were friendly and professional and were able to fix my issues within a few hours. Their shop was the cleanest and quietest shop I've ever seen. I ended up paying a little more than I wanted to, but I think the price was absolutely fair. Later I talked to a friend who had had a similar problem fixed on his car before and found out he paid hundreds more than Pro-Tek's estimate. Groupon users should note: 1) Follow the instructions on your voucher closely. 2) The voucher only applies to labor costs. read more

From other reviews, it seems like things went the same way for us, for a while, until it went wrong. When they do things right, it's great, but the longer we stuck with them, the worse it got. We first took our car in to Pro Tek because Lux (where we bought our car) recommended them. The price for an oil change was high, but I think it's high everywhere, no issues. Then, we had an issue with our water pump, they fixed it quickly, great. After this, I started noticing a trend of very vague estimates, if at all asking for approval before conducting service, only to show up and not know what we'd be paying. Then, another oil change, no prob. Then, it was time for a 40k tune up and my husband mentioned that we might need new wiper blades. When we went to pick up the car, they had replaced the blades and changed the oil. No one called to give my husband an estimate for the 40k tune up and they replaced the blades and changed the oil when we had just brought it in for an oil change 1,000 miles ago. I was irritated, but they do a good job, so just moved on. The straw that finally did it for me was the latest issue with our car. When the car was in for the 40k tune up, we asked them to look into why we were smelling gas. Mike said it was a valve that was stuck open and they would order the part and we could bring the car in to get it fixed. No one called me to update me on the part for a week, so I called and they said the part hadn't come in yet. I was told they would call when the part came in. No call for a week, so I called and they said the part was in, so I made an appointment. I needed to change the appointment and called to reschedule, so my info was taken and thought I was on the calendar. We showed up for our appointment and we were told that not only didn't they have us on the calendar, but they didn't have the part either. I was told they would call when they got the part. It's been over a week and still no call. In the meantime, we took our car to another mechanic who said the exhaust system had burned a hole in the fuel line and we'd been spewing gas for three weeks. They are too disorganized and that's too much of a misdiagnosis for me to ever go back to Pro Tek. read more
