This is the 2nd review I'm writing because of another great experience I had with Ray and his team. It was 4:30 on a Friday afternoon and my car just didn't feel right - it was making some noise and I had a busy weekend ahead so I wanted to make sure my car was safe. They had no problem with me stopping by right before closing time and told me that I needed new shocks and a new tire, but that it could wait a few weeks without doing major damage to the car. Who does that? They could have easily told me that I needed to have the work done right away to get their money, but they were honest in their assessment. They also changed my oil during that time and I was out within 30 minutes. A lot of my friends come here as well - they're very trustworthy. read more

We needed a smog check on a Sunday so I checked online and Promax was the only place I saw that was open on sunday...or so I thought. They DO NOT post their hours on their website, but they have a "button" to click to make an appointment. I was doing this on a Saturday night, and it said that they had appointments available all day on Sunday - so I confirmed the 9am appointment (first of the day). Went over at 9am on Sunday and they were CLOSED! It would be REALLY nice if they would post their hours online AND not make appointments on days they are closed. So...they may be the best place in town, but I wouldn't know. read more

Stepped in to use the restroom and ask about brake service pricing. I was interrogated as to why I needed to use his bathroom and why I couldn't go next door. Pissed and left. Should have had a better attitude, he'd possibly have a new client. I don't doubt he has skill, but anyone with that negative of an outlook is the kind to cover up a mistake, in my experience. Three stars because the shop looked clean and decently kept, but the attitude of the guy was just kinda unpleasant. Maybe I'll come back and catch him on a better day some time. read more

Buyer beware: Smog Check certificate is misleading and incorrectly worded. We took our RV because certificate said they smog checked RVs for $29 + 10. The first question the tech asked was if we were given a price, I showed him the ad. We had to wait for the owner to arrive and he said it would be $79. At best the ad was misleading but given the complexity of driving our 31 ft RV there we went ahead with the check. Get a price in writing before you go there. read more

Took my car here for a smog check. Not only did they have the cheapest price around ($30 with a coupon, and then $8.25 for the certificate), but my car would have failed because of a missing part in my fuel cap. Instead of failing the car and squeezing more money out of me, they sold me the fuel cap right there (looked online and it was cheaper than anywhere else I could find), which allowed my car to pass. On top of this, they were extremely fast. Quick, efficient, quality service. I will definitely use them in the future. read more

AMAZING service!! I had purchased tires from another location a few months ago. One of them was damaged and had to be replaced. I ordered it online and brought it in to be mounted and balanced. Took my car here on a recommendation from a friend. Was told to talk to Ray, I think he is the owner. Was not disappointed at all. I feel he is very trustworthy, and is very reasonable or average in pricing. I have had my timing belt and radiator done here. He also takes me home so I can wait for it to be done on my couch rather than the shop. I will be taking my car to him because he seems to not try and overcharge. I also tested him. My car was having problems and I used my own machine to tell me what was wrong with the car(got it for Christmas highly recommend one of these for $80. It does the same check as the auto shops and you plug it in and look up the code to see what's wrong.) Anyway, he was right on and even told me what was necessary and what could wait. I've been going to ProMax for ~8 years starting with when I had to get a smog check. They are a gold center so they can do test only and do repairs. My truck had trouble passing due to electronics issues I new it had. They had to do a lot of investigation and it took several trips. I applied and qualified for the assistance program in CA and it all was taken care of for a couple hundred which I think is a good deal. I've been for many other reasons and with several cars including my mom's. There are times that it's hard to know for sure what's going on. Recently, they said they had to clean the throttle body to get the rpms up. It seemed to work, but it did not fix the AC which is what I went in for. I had to pay for a full freon recharge. Also, when i picked it up there was something that looked like a gasket on top of the battery. I hope it was replaced with a new one and wasn't forgotten. So far the repairs - AC and power steering - are working great. Overall, repairs and maintenance have been done very well and the prices are reasonable, much less than dealerships. Also, Ray is nice and informative. read more

Ray's friendly and a ridiculousy honest mechanic. Took my 2010 Mini to get it's check engine light diagnosed/fixed so I could get it smogged for the 1st time. It took longer than expected but he called me the next morning with the most honest response I've ever gotten from a repair shop. He told me to take it back to the dealer to get it repaired under a state warranty I never knew existed (if your car is out of warranty but under 7 yrs/70k miles- I recommend you read the state emissions section of your warranty manual before approving any emissions related repairs. The covered parts vary depending on the make and model). Ray could have easily kept that bit of information to himself and made some money off the repairs but he didn't. The dealership, on the otherhand, wasn't as honest but I did end up getting the check engine light fixed. Took my car back to Ray and got it smogged and was out of there in less than 15m. I am an extremely satisfied customer and would definitely recommend this place! read more

Brought in my 2001 Pt Cruiser that needed a smog check from a star certified place, Was able to use coupon off of my phone, and outta there fast. Zero hassle smog check. Tiny waiting room with 3 chairs and a tv. Not spotless clean but we didn't really care, being a 20 minute wait for the check and it's an auto shop not a restaurant. I have been going to Promax for over 10 years and as a female it's the only place I feel that I don't get taken advantage of due to my ignorance of engines. I took my car there yesterday because it was making a knocking sound and having trouble accelerating. Ray could not find anything wrong with the vehicle and did not feel right about charging me for his time to check the fuel filter, timing belt, pistons, fluids, etc. He drove me around in my car as he tested the acceleration, going up and down hills, and nothing he could do could make that knocking sound come back. He wanted me to feel safe driving it. It turned out that it was probably the cheap gas I got that may have had water in it. Since all of this occurred the day after I filled up. I felt bad not paying him for the day my car was there but I was happy because I really didn't have the extra money right now to pay him read more

Read all the reviews and saw the $29.95 price on their website for a smog check. So, I called to confirm. As it turns out, the $29.95 price is for "most cars"....but not MY car. Nothing unusual or difficult about an E350.....but MY cost is $59.00.....which turns out to be the highest price of all the places I called. Typical bait and switch.
