I could go on and on about how much I love the beers and ales that come from Propolis Brewing. Pretty much anything you get is going to be great. They have a few other beverages that seem to be new on the scene here like some very refreshing hop water that you can purchase. They also serve mead which I was not aware of them having at all. I am guessing this is a new adventure for them as well as the hop water. Steve and I make sure each and every time when we come to Port Townsend to swing by here to get beer. I am up for local and original local creations and I found it here. Marvelous beers brewed with local and original ingredients like herbs, plants and weeds. They also some other local items like nuts and other snacks grown from around the area. Whimsical indoor seating areas, a side beer garden and an outside front "quarry hold" area. A very unique brewery... if you looking for something pleasantly tasty and not your normal IPA, this is the place. Always a must visit when in Port Townsend. Eclectic quaintness to the brewery. I'm not usually into "funky" beers, saisons, sours, etc. But for some reason this was the only brewery open on our summer trip through Port Townsend so we popped in. This is a tiny little spot with an industrial park vibe. The space is full of plants and the tasting room sits right inside the brewing area. I would definitely say it has a PNW brewery vibe, though it could use a major dusting. I chose the least funky beer I found find on the menu. It was pretty good, and made me happy I was swinging out and trying something new. The dude behind the bar was super friendly and helpful too. read more

Okay, I liked Propolis Brewing way more than I thought I would. Yes, I'm a typical Washingtonian, so when it comes to beer, I choose IPA all day. But while in Port Townsend, my boyfriend who is a huge saison and Belgian fan wanted to check out Propolis Brewing. He dragged me here, yet I was pleasantly surprised by the beers here. We visited on a Saturday afternoon, as it's walking distance from the main downtown drag of Port Townsend. It was only about a 15-minute walk, as Propolis Brewing is located towards when you first enter the town. Like the buildings around it, has a more industrial feel to it by the water, with a welcoming patio area that's dog-friendly. The only food offered here are snack items like crackers, cheese and salami. At this time, they are not allowing flights, yet instead of a regular pour, you can get a four-ounce beer, which is what we did. We shared a few beers, all with interesting flavors. The menu was large, as there was a variety of unique beers to try. The employee is happy to go over the beers with you and make recommendations. We tried a farmhouse beer made with chamomile and lavender, a barrel-aged saison that was made with tempranillo, another farmhouse beer that was made with salal berry, which is a local berry and another with elderflowers. All of the beers we had were very different than the usual hoppy ones I'm used to, but they were delightful. The eclectic flavors of all of the beers really came through, and I could see why they're enjoyed by many. I also like that I tried beers that are so different than any other kinds I've had before. I would come back and check out more of the menu when I'm back in town, as it's clear that Propolis Brewing uses local products and herbs to make their craft brews. Most chill place in Port Townsend, and trust me, I've tried. Came about an hour after opening, the Taproom has plenty of garden outdoor seating and big wood tables/upholstery in. I opted for indoors where the atmosphere is pure jungle plant/foxy music/laid back breeze. Probably a great time of day to go, and even though I'm sure there's summer tourism, I've visited between the county fair and the THING Festival, so maybe I hit the sweetest spot. The beertender was super helpful with my preferences, helped me find two good beverages (you can also get a half-pour for $4). Draft choices were very nice, organic, and including ingredients you don't always see (such as fennel or juniper). Also: the washrooms are clean! Do you like craft beer but understand the difference between a microbrew and a brewery? Do you enjoy beers fine tuned to perfection? Do you prefer a brewery that isn't a family playground? Then, this is your spot. The tap list consists of beers that you've probably never heard of but need in your life. 3 different hop varieties for pales, 5 different oak and wine bbl aged sours and a few stouts to choose from. The pale options were so damn good, light and crisp. The BA sour options were all unique and delicious (favorite was Elderberry) but be sure to try them all. To top off an excellent beer list, this place has a whole vibe to it. Boho-shic with so many well maintained plants and flowers scattered around the place, perfect for attracting bees to fit the name. Antique furniture, and their music is played from a record table with at least 300 vinyl options. This place was kind of dead for a Friday night, but we enjoyed it so much we returned Saturday. It might have just been a slow weekend but this place deserves more love. read more

Honestly, found this place to be disappointing. They make mostly "saison" style beers. These are a very unique style beer, almost like a sour cider. Help was unfriendly, at best. The brewery does not offer even tiny "tastes" so patrons can't really pick what they might like...just have to guess and pray. Not a fan and wouldn't go back. read more

We came here after being turned away at Finn River because we had our dogs with us. I'm so glad we did! Not only are they dog-friendly, they were genuinely friendly and welcoming to us, as well. My wife and I stopped in here for a quick tasting before heading back home after a weekend of exploring. Free parking is available. Discover is an accepted form of payment. This brewery is on the classier side and reminded me of wine tasting rather than beer tasting. Tastings are available in 4oz, 6oz or 12oz pours. I dig having options. I loved the tulip stemware with the bumblebee so much that I purchased a glass for $10. I know drink my wine out of this glass. I ordered a 4oz tasting of Gardin for $4 and my wife ordered a 4oz tasting of Litha for $3. We both liked the Gardin the best. Excellent brewery! If you want different beers, this is the spot for you. Most of their beers are farmhouse style/sour type beers. They off 6oz pours so you can try a couple different ones. One of my favorites was a wine barrel aged beer. Everything has such a unique flavor. The inside of the taproom is eclectic and vintage which also seems to fit with their beer styles too. The decor of this place is unlike any other brewery I've stepped into - and let me tell you I've done my fair share of stepping. But the best part about Propolis is the remarkable craftsmanship of their unique beer portfolio. In many ways, the eclectic nature of the interior maps beautifully onto their curious combinations of flavors. Elderflower? Pine? Local honey? Peppercorns? Sure, why not! Their farmhouse style ales are really an adventure for your tastebuds. To top it off, the service is friendly, they have games available, tables inside and out, a patio space that is dog friendly, a handful of tasty snacks (cheese sampler, anyone?), and a taster flight that will keep you and your significant other happy for at least an hour. The beer and ambience are stellar (best beer I've ever had), and make up for a lot (like the fact that the business is called "Propolis" but they have no mead on the menu--seriously puzzling). What they don't make up for is the treatment from the bartender. This guy acts as if your very existence is offensive, he hardly smiles or talks, and does this weirdly aloof thing where he barely acknowledges your presence at the bar and then acts like he's doing you a favor by taking your order. Been here twice now and it's uncomfortable, to say the least. His partner appears friendlier, although I haven't directly interacted with her. I have restaurant experience and have waited on communities of rude and entitled people, so I get it--but to treat everyone like a nuisance from the get-go is just poor business. Every beer is delicious. By all means, get the flight for $20. It may seem a little spendy at first, but you will be pleasantly surprised how happy you are with each taste. In my experience, most breweries or taprooms have a few great beers and a few duds. Of the 7 Propolis beers I sampled, each was very delicious and well balanced. They have chosen to focus on herbs and spices, which set them apart from any other brewery I've been to. It's a relatively small space, has a calm vibe, funky music and a unique feel. These unique, earthy treasures come from incorporating herbs and local wild foraged plants into their farmhouse style beer and will provide an experience of taste. I appreciate the idea of the owners walking through the woods collecting the ingredients of the beverages they pour. The tasting room itself is small but personal and provides an up front experience with the brewing process as well as a roll up garage door for summer time breezes. The owners have been brewing beer for several years and won many awards but this location is brand new. If you're looking for something different and fresh with an old world, old country taste, this is the beer for you. Propolis is next to west marine and some big motel, you must walk around back in a gravel parking lot. Inside on a sunny Thursday evening in September are fancy antique couches, probably 5 people reading, very quiet like a library. There's a fridge of bottles at one wall and a long bar with taps. Ask bartender what is good: he hands us a beer list and says it depends what we like, that they're 'all good.' Suggests we order the flight. I'm sort of intrinsically against 'flights' because usually there's a bunch of bad mixed in with the good. But... They have a short and long flight. After reading the menu we have no clue at all, these words that describe the various beers. We opt for the long flight for $35, which is about 3 pints of 7% beer-figure wed better get a full opinion. The long flight includes the more unusual aged beers. We sit outside alone with dog. About 5 minutes later the bartender and a woman carry out a tray of full glasses, explain the order, how to pour, to map glasses to menu, and go back inside. My wife and I spent the next hour tasting one amazing creation after another. Wife says sour beers taste like toilet cleaner but she liked the one sour that was included in our flight. Every single beer was worthy of contemplation, like sit back with eyes closed. New combinations of flavors, really really exceptional. I've had one or two beers in my life that compare with these, maybe the best day at holy mountain, but never so many different but great beers at once. When we went to pay I asked the bartender where all this beer came from, he says it's all brewed here. Who brews it? 'I do.', omg: this bartender is the actual brewer, the genius that made this stuff, he says he's self taught. I am a bit worried that I just experienced a perfect storm of greatness and will be disappointed on my next visit. I'd recommend everyone visit this place soon because it can't be so great forever. As a comparison, I was recently in bend and visited Ale Apothecary. Similar type of beer but... AA had only 4 beers available, and all beer was $4/4oz, $8/8oz, etc, so the 4 beer flight was $16. Not only much more expensive than Propolis but the beer there, while good, didn't touch the crazy variety of flavors available at Propolis. read more

As a beer enthusiast, I was excited to try this herbal beer. The place is eclectic and funky and it felt like a nice place to relax. Unfortunately, the service was poor. We received zero acknowledgement when standing at the bar for 10 minutes and when we asked questions about their offerings, we received terse, snobby responses. This was embarrassing since I was the one that led my friends to come here. I get that they don't use hops and bitters like traditional beer, but was surprised that I was shamed for asking for something that was similar to an IPA. I was walking my dog...rephrase...my dog was waking me, and we happened upon this brewery! I was admiring it and spoke to a gentleman outside who told me it was a must try. He gave up beer 5 years ago due to headaches but discovered this beer that doesn't give him that awful side effect. Now, to be honest, I am not a beer drinker. It's not ever my drink of choice, but I was convinced I needed to try it because of its curb appeal and customer recommendation. I went back to my hotel, got my purse and headed back. I did glance at other yelp reviews, just to firm up my decision to go back. I have to say that the reviews that speak of unfriendliness are completely unjustified. The people here are wonderful! Personable, quirky, helpful, informative. Those words really don't do them justice. So pleasant! I did the flight since I had no idea what to order. I read the descriptions of each beer in the flight and knew, obviously, what I would like. I was completely wrong!! All the beers are fantastic but my favorites were not what I thought they'd be! 2 bottles to go and I can't wait to go back! If you're in Port Townsend this place is a must! If you're in Seattle or Edmonds, jump on the ferry and get here! You won't be disappointed! It hurts me to write this. For i LOVE Propolis beers with every fibre of my heart and soul! I live on the Eastside, (outside of seattle). Propolis brewing is in Pt Townsend, a pretty and tiny little city a drive, ferry ride, and drive away. This is not a simple little drive to get to. I check Google, and the website, ITS OPEN ON SUNDAYS!! I get a whim to pay homage to my favorite beer by visiting the brewery. I jumped in the car at about 11 AM and headed out. Get to the ferry and get on with few problems, $28 out of my pocket....its worth it for the worlds best beer, right? Start the drive through Kingston to hood canal. Traffic is heavyish but bearable, all with the promise of tasting an amazing beer fresh from the tap. Pull into town, the excitement builds. I see the sandwich board advertising the tasting room I am STOKED! Great beer is about to be consumed. I look towards the building, Gee it looks dark and no one is there. People must not know about it. Doesn't matter, more beer for me and a chance to talk to the staff. I walk up to the door and turn the handle.....LOCKED. A small printed sign saying the tasting room won't be open til the 10th. No explanation, no nothing, just me, thirsty, heartbroken, and pissed as hell knowing that I will have to bear the drive through massive traffic back home. I didn't go to that little town for anything else. I went there only for a visit to Propolis. Shame on you guys for being so lame that you couldn't post a little note on your homepage that says "HEY GUYS...We are closed until the 10th". I could understand that. I could have waited. The fact that you couldn't toss $20 to some 15 year old kid to update your website is pathetic and is the worlds greatest example of how NOT to treat your fans and customers. The effort you would have gone to would have been nothing.....I wasted almost 8 hours of my day to drive out to you and turn around, sit through throngs of traffic just to get home. * GD hours.
