This was my first time at a Guam restaurant, and I will definitely be back! All of the staff were super friendly and accommodating and service was great! We had an 8:30 rese, but showed up early and they were able to sit us outside. The restaurant vibes are casual and chill, they play reggae tunes-my fav! For apps we had their chilled bbq-d eggplant dish and their beef and potatoes empanada, which was covered in freshly grated cheese. I'm definitely getting that next time! Make sure to get the spicy garlic sauce, it was great with the empanada. For dinner we had their pork belly, which comes with poblano peppers, cabbage and pineapple, this was amazing! We also tried their tamale. For dessert, we had their vanilla ice cream with salted caramel and a French press. They don't have a liquor license, so just beer and vino. Prubechu is a genuinely unique place to have a meal. The vibrancy of the back patio is undeniable, between the upbeat live music (a jazz-leaning trio of saxophone, drums and standup bass), the agile waiters dressed in colorful garb and the tropical overtones of the decor. The food itself was satisfying but ultimately it didn't bowl me over. The Iceberg Wedge Salad and Roasted Japanese Yams both fell short of amazing, almost like dishes still in beta. The flavors didn't quite transcend the sums of their parts and left me gaping at the cost, with those two items alone totaling well over $50. On top of that, an extra charge of $4 for additional hot sauce is ridiculous. I don't think a restaurant is honor bound to just give away ingredients, but the upcharge for a literal 8-ounce ramekin of hot sauce (especially on dishes that truly need it) didn't ingratiate them to me. The wasabi ranch on the salad and the caramelized edge of the sweet potatoes were both solid, but it's hard to imagine this place being a near-term repeater with both mild flavors and an unjustified pricetag to boot. Furthermore, the wait between our first course and main course was inexplicably lengthy, making us wonder if the latter would even arrive. The live music is fun, but depending on your placement in the outdoor area (there is very little indoor seating) and the nature of your conversation, the volume could be a detriment to the experience. There are very few Chamorro spots in SF -- and in most U.S. cities, I feel -- so it's great to have some representation here in the city with Prubechu! The menu is decently expansive with a lot of creative dishes, which I appreciate. Here's what we ordered: CHAMORRO SWEET ROLLS & TUBA BUTTER ($12): The rolls were lovely! They were super soft, fluffy, and warm. The gluten was developed very nicely. My one qualm was the total lack of salt in the butter. Butter and salt should never be apart (unless you're really specific about your baking). A generous sprinkle of flaky salt on the butter, which is already a bit sweet and tangy from the coconut vinegar, would have added so much to this dish. ICEBERG WEDGE & WASABI RANCH ($20): Really fun and interesting salad! This was our favorite dish of the night. Of course, the wedge itself was super fresh and crunchy. It was topped with a generous amount of avocado. The highlight for me was the wasabi ranch: it's ingenious and just a fantastic flavor combo. Even though the portion was large, the price was still quite steep for what's mostly lettuce. ROASTED JAPANESE YAMS ($32): I do not recommend this dish, it is just not worth the price tag. My friend and I both love Japanese sweet potatoes, and we assumed that given the high price tag, they must have done something really unique and special with the humble yam. Unfortunately, that assumption was incorrect. It was a healthy-tasting dish with no more than one small yam's worth of Japanese sweet potato. BBQ PORK RIBS ($26): The ribs were solid! They were tender and smoky. They were a messy eat, but that's to be expected. You get four ribs that have a decent amount of meat on them, which was a good size for my friend and me, but not great for larger groups, so just a note there. THRICE COOKED BRISKET SKEWER ($29): The brisket was super tender, and the portion was good, but unfortunately, I found the meat to be very salty. Unlike the butter, less salt here would have been amazing! DINANCHE' HOT SAUCE ($4): We were upsold on the hot sauce, and it was hot! It was a fun addition, but not for those with poor spice tolerance. BANANA DONUTS ($14): These were fine. I like the concept, and a homey dessert is always comforting. I felt like these could have used more breading and sweetness to fully own the title of "donuts". If you are all in on the roasted banana filling, then this would be up your alley. I would prefer a more even ratio of the filling and breading. SWEET TAMALE WITH KIWI ($14): This was also fine. It was very lightly sweet, and the texture of the cassava was cool. Overall, this did leave something to be desired, and I expected more than two small slices of kiwi given that it was called out. Prubechu has some high points, as well as some things that I think could be improved. It's generally a little overpriced for what you get, but that could have come down to what we picked. This was a chance encounter. Some friends had some American Express benefits they wanted to use for dinner. They invited me to join in -- even though I'm not a card holder. I had never heard of the restaurant before so I took a leap of faith. First, the ambiance was great! It was outdoor seating that evening as the weather was warm and there was live music. It had a great outdoor island vibe as if we were somewhere in the pacific/hawaii. Second, the food service was fantastic. We ordered the set menu and the food came out in a good pace for the most part. There were some brief pauses here and there between servings, and somebody in my group complained it took a long time -- but I thought it was an acceptable pace. I had not expected the food to be so flavorful. Also it was not immensely carb heavy, so that was great for me as a T2 diabetic. The only thing I really avoided was the rice dish. I took two small scoops just to taste it, and it was the best rice I've had in some time -- just unfortunately I cannot eat any more of it. I would definitely love to come back to this restaurant especially on a warm night to sit outside and take in the ambiance. Again, the food was very high quality. Only one minor ding, my group was not so in love with the cocktails, so they did not order any more beyond their first drink. For myself, I had ordered a glass of syrah. However, it just tasted really off to me. I've drank enough wine in my life to know what a syrah should taste like and this was had very noticeable sour notes and did not have a full body. Either somebody poured in a terrible quality pinot and got it mixed up or the bottle of syrah has gone bad. Server tried to explain it was natural wine so it would have a slightly sour/acidic flavor to it; however I was not buying that explanation -- it simply did not taste right. He kindly offered for me to pick another wine, and instead I went with just the house wine and prayed that it won't have notes of vinegar. It came, and it was fine. We loved the ambiance, and the live music was a nice touch. For food, we tried a few dishes, but my favorite was the Tinatak (coconut-braised beef and egg noodle dish). If you're not a fan of coconut, I'd steer clear, as the flavor can be overpowering, but I liked it. The rest of the food was decent, but nothing really stood out. The staff was friendly, but the service was slow and felt unorganized. Tables seated after us received their dishes before we did, and a nearby table accidentally got one of our dishes. We ate outside under the tent at the picnic tables. It was very comfortable and warm, despite being a cold and rainy night. We ordered the Koko wings (a MUST order) with the hot sauce, which is an additional charge, but totally worth it since I slathered it on all the other food I ordered. If you like beef stroganoff, let me tell you that you have to order the Tinaktak. It takes beef stroganoff to a whole new level. The brisket was also good. We ordered the appan mendioka (cassava) as a side and it paired well with everything. The dish we found to be a bit underwhelming was the tamale. Food- we asked to a rec for an appetizer and got the eggplant and it was a total miss for us. Cold and tasted overwhelmingly of liquid smoke. The chili oil and flatbread helped a bit but we really didn't like it. The tamale and shrimp and grits were fantastic as were the banana donuts. Tamale was my favorite dish and our favorite bite of the night. The shrimp and grits was really interesting. I only wish the "grits" were less of a purée and more textured. Donuts were so so good and we wish we could have ordered the housemade coconut ice cream with it without getting two desserts. I had no idea what to expect from Guamanian food, but I'm always down to try something new, and Prubechu was a delightful surprise. Since it was our first time, my friend and I ordered à la carte. Visually, it was beautiful, and the texture and flavor were reminiscent of a ceviche or crudo. Such a great option for vegetarians and my favorite dish of the night. The wings were crisp and flavorful, and the shrimp and grits were a pleasant surprise since I'm usually not a big fan. The shrimp were very fresh, and the grits had a rich, luxurious texture. We finished with the brisket skewer and a side of red rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and well seasoned; the only disappointment for me was the brisket, which was a bit too fatty for my taste. We started with the Chamorro rolls, which had the most amazing coconut butter and then enjoyed the chicken kelaguen which were like zippy little zesty tacos, their hot sauce is spicy beware! Lastly we enjoyed the Tinatak which was best described to us as a mushroom stroganoff but the tomatoes made the dish feel bright ! Now the food was good and I appreciate that they're here to bring dishes from Guam to SF/CA! There's not many places I've experienced in CA that serve this kind of cuisine. Service was nice and ambiance is good (there's heaters for outside seating) HOWEVER, my main gripe with this place was the PRICE TO FOOD RATIO. This place should instead be labeled as "$$$" or maybe even "$$$$" and be considered much more as a fine dining establishment as the portions are misleadingly smaller than what it appears to be from the menu. For example, keep in mind the $17 lechen birenghenas or the eggplant dish (pictured) is a thin strip of eggplant dressed up with cherry tomatoes and herbs. The actual dish itself tasted great, but it was SO small and unfulfilling. Same with the other dishes, where the portions were quite small. The koko wings ($25) are also 5 wings, which were delicious, but again not worth that price point UNLESS you had so much disposable income that food prices don't matter. I do have a slight issue with fine dining establishments with the high price to small portion ratios, especially when this place is marked as "$$". Also the interior wasn't that beautiful for me to think the prices-to-food would be much higher. Guam is expensive due to import costs, but I don't think there's that much importation happening here. I'd recommend the $10 bowl of red rice to accompany the $30 thrice cooked brisket skewer (pictured) so you don't leave feeling hungry. A bit disappointed overall; really liked the fried chicken but the rest was decent but not great. Empanada was quite nice in terms of texture but the beef and potato filling lacked seasoning. Personally, I didn't like the eggplant, it was a mix of textures and flavors I didn't like. It is served cold, has a very mushy texture, and an off smoky flavor. We thought the beef noodle dish was a bit misleading; we thought it'd be a beef dish with noodles but it was noodles with beef in it. Despite that, it was very coconut forward and tasted quite nice like a coconut curry x beef stroganoff but the portion was really small for $30. Fried chicken was spectacular, best item we had by far. Perfectly crispy dry wings with savory and slightly sweet seasoning. Moist chicken and a nice vinegar sauce on the side. These wings alone make it worth the visit. Finally, dessert was also nice, liked the textures and flavors quite a bit. Service was great, staff was very friendly and attentive. I may just be an alcoholic and wished there was hard alcohol lol. But they have beer and sake and actually introduced me to a new favorite sake, Chokaisan 'Mount Chokai.' The description said "a glass of this is a STEAL!" so I had to try it. And it was amazinggggg. Sooo buttery smooth. Must get!!! Wonderful cozy and modern restaurant with great vibes and a large patio. We were able to easily make a reservation, but it wasn't too busy on a weekend for lunch. They have an extensive drink menu with really reasonable prices too. They were super accommodating of my friend's allergies here, clearly marking which menu options were safe and substituting ingredients if needed. I never had food from Guam before but Prubechu left me super impressed. I was able to walk in on a Thursday for lunch without any issues. They had an outside patio but I opted to dine indoors. The service was extremely hospitable and I definitely appreciated their recommendations. I started off with the corn chowder which was chilled and a beef empanada. The chowder was creamy and packed with flavor - I thought the toasted bread was a nice touch to soak some of it up. The empanada was definitely elevated and a fair portion - the sauce paired with the flavors perfectly and the arugula gave it the perfect balance. There was just a bit too much cheese and the interior was a bit dry but dipping it with the chowder worked too! I was decently full by then but I had to try the roasted pork belly that everyone raves about. The pork belly texture was great and the sauce gave it the flavor and texture that it needs. Slightly overpriced, portions are small like you're paying scarcity tax for Guamanian cuisine. Flavors are good tho, worth trying once. BUT I cannot get over the absolute robbery that is the chicken wings. Lots of reviews recommended them, so we ordered. STUNNED when FIVE WINGS arrived on a diner plate with a ramekin of sauce. Wow, the food here is amazing and everything I put in my mouth is delicious- you can't go wrong with ordering anything from the menu. Everything here is so authentic, but also elevated and it's a really creative juxtaposition of honoring Chamorro food but also really distinguishing themselves in the SF food scene. The service here is really really friendly and everyone is super welcoming and kind. This is the only restaurant that I know of that serves food from Guam and I really appreciate being culturally immersed in different regional food. The ambience is pretty homey- it gives off the vibe of having a barbecue in someone's backyard. That being said, even with the heat lamps, it's still pretty cold outside so I opted to sit inside, but even then it was still pretty chilly since the servers go in and out and I was wearing my puffy jacket throughout my whole dinner. I had gotten the chicken kelaguen, potato beef empanada, golai halon suni, and red rice. This was the perfect introduction to Chamorro food and taste is so unique. I love acidity in my food so the chicken kelaguen definitely hit the spot for me because it was just so tangy while retaining a good char. The rice is so flavorful and the creamy spinach braised in coconut cream was also delicious. My only regret was not having enough room for dessert. read more

Only Guam style food in SF that I know of and have had. Friends and I ordered a variety of dishes - koko wings, tinaktak, coconut tityas, lechen birenghenas and banana donuts. The flavor profile for the dishes we ordered were coconut and citrus forward. Service was great but they did seem to like to upsell. When asked what their most popular dishes were....they said everything which wasn't super helpful. Ambiance was pretty nice outdoors but the bench seating got a bit uncomfortable over time. I was kinda shocked by the pricing of some dishes and value for money isn't really there since the ingredients were pretty basic and dishes were small. One of the main dishes for some roasted yams cost a whopping $32 so just keep that in mind - we didn't order that. I don't think the cost of the food was also balanced with an ambiance that was worth this price point as well. Koko wings (5/5) - marinated well with a citrus forward dipping sauce and nice crunchy exterior Tinaktak (4/5) - thought was a coconut braised beef but ended up being ground beef with some bouncy egg noodles and mushrooms, tomatoes, and green beans Coconut tityas (3/5) - basic flatbread that we used to dip our appetizer in, a bit dry Lechen birenghenas (3/5) - thought it was a bit too charred and citrus heavy that it overshadowed the eggplant natural tastiness Banana donuts (5/5) - these were hitting since it's fried banana balls with fresh whipped cream Overall not bad! I don't know how often I'd come back because of the pricing but it was nice to try a new cuisine. Located in the Mission District, it's safe to say that Prebechu is the only restaurant in the city featuring Chamorro dishes. The tagline on their website reads, "From Guam with Love" -- and that's exactly what we felt as soon as we walked in. We came in for dinner on a Friday evening so about every table was occupied, it was lively with laughter, and there was a DJ spinning some familiar tracks. The hospitality from the host to our server(s) were world class island vibes -- friendly, sincere, composed, and simply fun! Our sweet host (didn't catch his name) was able to squeeze us in for a table in their heated outdoor patio section, but warned us of a time limit because a reservation was scheduled to come in within 90 minutes. No big deal as 1.5 hours is plenty of time for dinner. But lesson learned for all of y'all, make a reservation so you don't risk not being able to snag a table. Alright, let's talk food. My date and I ordered the following to share which was plenty: * BBQ PORK RIBS ($23.99) soy sauce, vinegar, lemon, garlic, sesame oil * BOWL OF CHICKEN KELAGUEN ($16.20) bbq'd and marinated in lemon with scallion and coconut * RED RICE ($8.01) achote-seasoned rice * KƠ KO WINGS ($20.28) dry spiced fried chicken with lemon finadenne * PICKLE BAG ($8.95) pickled egg, carrots, and assorted vegetables * CHAMORRO POTATO SALAD ($9.01) egg, olive, bell pepper, mayo and nori powder Chef and kitchen staff: y'all have taste and presentation on lock.
