I've been searching for a good spot for steak frites in the bay and heard good things about chez maman so i thought to give it a try. The peppercorn sauce was delicious and had a mushroomy taste. The steak and sauce complimented each other so well. I love a side of fries but they were maybe a tad too salty. Safe to say I will be back for this dish again. First time trying french onion soup and was delighted about the gooey cheese and the soaked bread bits at the bottom. You definitely can get a good cheese pull with this. The onion wasn't as overpowering as I initially thought this soup would be. Fettuccini with mushrooms was buttery goodness on a plate. Pretty standard dish and filling. We came here specifically because of the reviews and drove across the city to try it. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. We arrived around 2 PM on Sunday, August 23, and waited approximately 30 to 45 minutes before anyone took our order. We were seated on the patio, and during that time I watched two other parties get up and leave after waiting just as long without being helped. The table next to us was also having service issues and ended up receiving the wrong order. The food itself was bland and not something I would come back for. The one positive part of the experience was the gentleman bussing the tables, who had dark hair and a beard. He was extremely polite, attentive, and kind. Unfortunately, our waitress, who had red hair, seemed completely disengaged. She never checked on us after taking our order, did not bring us our check, and even her demeanor while taking the order felt dismissive. When we ordered, her response was basically "okayyyyy," which was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Overall, this was not at all what I expected based on the reviews. This location will always be Chez Papa for my '90's self, a destination for numerous weekday lunches. Chez Maman was actually a half block down the hill on the same block at that time. Now it's sixteen years later. After an early start to a Sunday Valkyries game, my friend brought us here for a post game dinner. After finding a parking space a block away, we walked up a little after 6:30 pm. When I reached the entrance, I noticed the sketch board and wrote my name below the names and guest numbers already there. When I asked the hostess, she told me it was likely a twenty to thirty minute wait. The dining room was packed as well as the sidewalk tables and outdoor dining structure. Being hungry and antsy, I walked the various tables to observe the service progression to estimate when we'd be seated. About 35 minutes later, we were seated at the sidewalk table next to the entrance and given menus. It's been a while so a menu study was needed. After some discussion, we decided on our meals and agreed to share bites of each other's food. I tried a few bites of my friend's roasted duck confit, French fries (subbed from potatoes gratin), haricot vert, port reduction; sorry, no photo as this disappeared relatively quickly; the duck was tender and fork tender with a smoky flavor as it came right off the bone. Thanks to J. Garen who waited on our table and the bus staff who cleared empty plates and bowls and refilled out water glasses. Big thanks for Naomi, the hostess, who kept all waiting guests updated and kept a watchful eye to make sure the tables turn efficiently. Best French restaurant in SF IMO! If you're getting anything off the menu, I recommend the LES MOULES POULETTE . This plate is an assortment of mussels, bacon, garlic, white wine, cream, and parsley. Make sure you order bread as well, so that you can dip it into the plate/sauce . Staff is friendly and there's also outdoor seating which is perfect for the summer. I highly recommend coming early on a Friday or weekend as they do get busy. We sat outside and it was really nice to enjoy the weather, parking is also not too bad here. We got the mussels with fries and there was an ample amount to share. Highlight was the duck and the mussels. The carbonara was on the heavier side, but I appreciated how hot it came out, it was still really warm after ten minutes of it being served. The French onion soup was super cheesy. This has to be one of my new favorites! I love it so much and I'm pretty surprised it took me so long to try it. Came here one day for lunch and ordered a variety of things: French Onion Soup: Came with caramelized white cheese of some sort, it was mild. Had some bread soaked into the soup, had good amount of onions, soup had some sweetness. It was okay. Fries with garlic aioli - Fries were crispy on outside and soft on inside, the garlic aioli was a nice addition. Would get again. Roasted Duck confit: Came with potatoes gratin, greens beans, port reduction. Roasted duck leg that was fall off the bone tender, juicy not dry, went nicely with the port reduction. The potato gratin is good, greens beans were just steamed/sauteed. Overall it is a pretty heavy dish but good. Would get again. Pan seared branzino: came with fregola sarda, red bell pepper coulis and olive oil and a side of lemon. The branzino was a touch fishy but still solid. The fish skin was crisp. Fregola sarda kind of reminds me of jumbo couscous. The red bell pepper coulis paired with fish add a little more to mask the fishiness. Apricot chardonnay sorbet: strong apricot flavor and some floral notes probably from the chardonnay. White peach champagne sorbet: taste like peach, don't taste the champagne. Both sorbet is refreshing and light but the white peach is too light to pair with other stuff. The white peach is fine by itself but cant eat it with other flavors. I had the bacon avocado omelette at Chez Maman in Hayes Valley. Overall, it was a decent, straightforward omelette. The texture was fine and properly cooked, but nothing about it really stood out. The potatoes were quite nice and were probably the best part of the plate. They were well prepared and satisfying. The side salad was fine as well, though it was a little heavily dressed for my taste. The beef cheeseburger was thick, juicy and full of flavor, with perfectly melted cheese and a nicely toasted bun that held everything together. I liked how customizable it felt, letting you switch up the flavors bite by bite. Solid, satisfying burger with crispy fries to match. Service was a bit slow, but there was a waiter shift change happening. One small surprise was that they do not serve regular coffee, only espresso based drinks, which is good to know going in. I've been wanting to try chez maman for a while and my friend and I finally got the chance to come for dinner! they don't take reservations but we came early and were sat outside which was beautifully decorated with lights. I ordered the hachis parmentier which is basically a shephard's pie, as my waiter told us. It had a layer of ground beef topped with potatoes and a layer of crispy cheese. I can't imagine how that combination could be bad, but it still exceeded my expectations. It was so incredibly rich and flavorful, and I could see myself having that as a comfort food now. my friend ordered a chicken burger and said it was delicious especially with the grilled onions. I will definitely be back to try more of the food- there were so many dishes that sounded amazing. the hostess and waiters were very kind and knowledgeable as well. the location in potrero hill is small but charming and beautiful, and we had an amazing experience for dinner. I've been constantly passing by this place and seeing a busy line so finally had to try one weekday. Was busy as usual but I came with a group of two(highly recommended) as the seating was much faster than the larger parties. The portions for some of the entrees are huge so be mindful not to over order! We tried the mussels which were delicious and the sauce it came with was great with the fries from the hamburger. I found the burger to be way more luxurious than what you'd normally expect. Again be prepared some things can be quite large. we also tried the soup of the day which was this lovely tomato basil soup and the pork chop which was perfectly cooked with another great sauce that i kept on dipping the fries in. One last note is the atmosphere it definitely feels like a nice cozy cafe that makes you wanna stay and chat with ur neighbors. chez maman has been on my list for awhile, and i finally got to try! with a party of 2 on a sunday at 6:30pm, there was a 10 minute wait which was perfectly reasonable. we sat at an outdoor table which was slightly slanted, but it was manageable. the french onion soup was soo good. the flavors are very nice, and the textures of the cheese, bread, and onion were incredible. the croque madame was also quite good, it was a fried (?) ham sandwich with an egg on top. the arugula salad had wonderful dressing. lastly, the mussels were decent, i wanted to try them since theyre a standard french faire but i was a bit let down by them. however, the fries were really great! overall, i would definitely come back to chez maman and get the french onion soup and another croque madame. really recommend this place! read more

Had to update my review since I came and tried new items! I love bringing friends here for an SF taste of French food :) I got the burger as I've been on the hunt for a good burger in Potrero Hill, and this did not disappoint! I did have to add $3 for the Swiss cheese, but the cheese pull made it more than worth it! Every bite was great, the fries were amazing and crispy, and the garlic aioli on the side was the perfect cherry on top! The portion size was also fairly large! I really like Chez Maman East. It's delicious and friendly and fast and pretty unpretentious for San Francisco dining. Also, parking nearby is a breeze in Potrero Hill. The service is friendly and speedy, accommodating and no-nonsense. I ordered a croque madame (only $1 more for the fried egg on top, so worth it) which came with a large side salad. The only thing that could be a bit better is if the salad wasn't doused in so much oil and vinaigrette dressing because it made the salad pretty soggy. But the portion size of both the sandwich and the salad was really generous. To the point that I could only eat half my sandwich! I would have taken it to go, but I was headed to the symphony after and it seemed a bit awkward to leave leftovers in the car for 4 hours, even at night. I could tell this is a local favorite because there were many groups who you could tell lived in the neighborhood, including a group of parent friends with their young children. They got many bowls of the specialty mussels and the kids, aged 5-7 or so, dug in heartily! I was impressed. So good! Came in for brunch for 2 on a Saturday at around 11am. Plenty of outside and inside seating available at this time, we were seated immediately. We ordered the Tomato Omelette and Poulette Moules and Frites to share between the 2 of us. Portion-wise this is a pretty light meal, which was what we wanted. If we were properly hungry the moulettes (no frites) plus 2 more entrees would definitely be the way to go. The standout for us were definitely the moules!! The sauce is so creamy and can stand as a soup by itself. The mussels are clean and well steamed, all open pretty easily. This was really good to eat with a spoon to scoop some soup, mussel, and dunked fries and eat in one bite. Super creamy and fresh, with texture from the fries. Delicious! Next time we'll come back and try the moules with baguette side. I feel like the soup was so good it'd be great to try soaking it up with bread to get more per bite. Yup I still eat here often. The menu doesn't change much but they do change how particular dishes are made, generally for the better. I might have had the hamburger today, but they switched it to grass fed and for me it's a bit livery (I like grain finish.) Husband had this a few weeks ago and we were all sad about it. French onion soup is still solid. The Eggs Benedict (weekend brunch menu) has very good hollandaise sauce. The Frisée salad is still the bomb. The salad Nicoise is okay (the dressing is good) but nothing to write home about. The pork chop is still incredible! Get this if you are unsure of what to order. Guaranteed happiness. We ran upon this restaurant and decided to turn the night into a spontaneous date. It was packed, which immediately felt like a good sign. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated, which went by quickly. Since it was our first visit, we asked our waiter for recommendations. He insisted we try the escargots, saying they were similar to mussels--which we love--so we gave them a try. We also ordered bread and butter to pair it with the escargots and did not disappoint. For our main dishes, I ordered the fettuccini, and it was hands down the creamiest and most delicious pasta I've ever had. My fiancé chose the roasted duck confit, one of their signature dishes, and it was rich, flavorful, and incredibly filling. We were so full that we didn't get a chance to try dessert, but we'll definitely be back to do that. "Exceedingly average" is how I'd describe our experience at Chez Maman. We got the burger, the chicken crepe, and the French onion soup. On a Sunday around 12:30 PM, the tables were filled with brunch and lunch parties. Our party of 3 opted for the counter seating so we could get seated right away. The view is of the street and the patrons eating at the outside tables right in front of the window, which made for some awkward eye contact. The restaurant was filled with conversation but still had a calm atmosphere, and the waitstaff were super attentive and kept checking in to make sure we were having a good time and enjoying the meal. I got the Chez Maman Burger with Brie -- would definitely recommend! With the giant juicy slices of heirloom tomatoes and the caramelized onions, the creamy brie really elevated the experience. This one of my husband and I's favorite neighborhood spots. We probably come in 1-2 a month for a midweek dinner. I always say to him that if we ever had to leave SF, I'd miss Che Maman the most.
