First impressions ... a dimly lit, 1970's vibe that is clean and well maintained. Restroom is clean. I ordered the Public House burger ... a small beef patty with crispy, thick-cut bacon and a very generous portion of tasty pulled pork, cheese, tomato, onion and was served on a properly toasted ciabatta bun. The beef flavor of the burger patty was lost in a sea of the other stronger flavors. Towards the end, it became a bit of a sloppy mess that I finished with a knife and fork. The serving of crispy homemade chips initially seemed small, but was actually sufficient. Thankfully, they were very lightly salted. Not a salt fiend ... Service was both prompt and attentive ... my water glass was never empty and I never wanted/waited for anything. I ended up choosing to go with the walleye which was breaded in a cornbread breading and came with french fries and coleslaw. The size of the walleye was very impressive. It was entirely too much food for me and my husband had to help me finish it. The coleslaw was really tasty and I'm pretty picky about my coleslaw. It was very mild. I also thought the french fries were really good and they were seasoned very well. I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the cornbread breading because I thought it was too crunchy and I was expecting more of a beer batter breading. My friend also ordered the plantains to start and they were delicious. She ordered the Keylime pie as a dessert and it was super tart and I liked it. One of my friends ordered the chicken tenders and was disappointed that there were only three tenders in the serving for dinner size portion. I will typically focus on benedicts and biscuits, tasty but complicated for me to make. I also order pancakes because, somehow, I cannot master such a simple recipe in my kitchen. No judging, please, I'm very picky about my pancakes and I never have buttermilk (or even milk) at home. Today, my friend ordered a stack of pancakes loaded with berries for our table of 3. Enough to enjoy but not too filling to prevent ordering another dish. My friend recommended the avocado toast or the chicken and waffles. I went with the latter: tender fried chicken tenders on small waffles. I loved the large pieces of chicken breast, crunchy and flavorful. The waffles were okay. I also ordered the potato hash as a side, which came highly recommended, for good reason. We had family visiting in town and Public house is one of the top spots recommended. We stopped in around 10 and we had a delicious brunch. You can tell the quality of the food is top-notch and the eggs are fresh. The breakfast potatoes are excellent, and we cannot wait to come back to try the sweet potato fries which we saw on many other plates. A food have no time at all to come out. The decor is very cute & looks recently updated. The bathrooms are maintained well. It's nice to look out on "Main st" with all of the windows. Came to Monroe to go to the River Rasin Battle field. We headed to the Public House for breakfast and it was fantastic. They have a nice selection of seating for large parties or smaller groups. The breakfast menu has a wide array of choices from eggs Benedict, to cheesy fried grits and chicken and waffles. Our party had the southwest hash, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, chicken strips and fries (I know), grilled cheese, and french toast. I feel for the employees working here. During my visit, it was extremely hot inside, and it didn't seem like there was adequate air conditioning or ventilation. No one should have to work in those conditions for an entire shift. I seen a review saying this was the best food in Monroe- and I have to say that usually I'm scared to try new places, but I went out on a limb today and visited. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and promptly sat. My server came right up to me and was super super friendly recommending items and telling me her favorites and other customers. The wait time for my meal in my appetizer was appropriate and the level of customer care was amazing. Rarely do you ever go anywhere and feel like you actually matter to the staff! In town for a dog show. Never had been ti Monroe so a quick search on yelp was necessary to point us in the right direction (thanks fellow elites!). Quiet music played. The overhead lighting was soft with almost a candle lit feel. The back wall is planked in pecan and their side wall by kitchen is a galvanized steel accent wall so Id say its a bit of a rustic feel. The hostess let us pick where we wanted to sit. (Always nice) This time we chose perfectly. A cozy little round table in the corner that had the best server possible- Lynnell! I ordered the 1/2 portion of the beet n carrot salad. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. (Yes, to the point it needed to be shouted and all caps). It was huge. I shudder to think what a full size was. Then I got the chicken avocado sandwich. That was very good. I would get that again. Grilled chicken (generous portion) with lettuce, tomato, bacon and avocado. It was very flavorful but so large so I took half home. (Thats actually a pro too!) My husband got a cuban sandwich that Lynnell suggested. I see why that is popular. Finally a place that sells a cuban that looks and tastes like a real cuban. My hubs was nice enough to let me take a bite and when we return to Public House, I might just order that. Delicious. Tip: Save room for the key lime pie. That was very good. We also tried the banana cake. It was very good, but the pie is the winner. So, if you're on the fence on where to go.... I would choose this place. It really was excellent on aesthetics, service, menu variety, cleanliness, speed of food delivery and the quality of the food was outstanding. Parking easy as they have their own lot. I would recommend asking for Lynnell. She really adds to the entire trip in with her service and personality. You wont be disappointed. What a fantastic discovery! We're neighbors from the north (Wyandotte) who were in Monroe for something else and stumbled upon Public House. Be assured we will now make the trip back specifically to eat here! Food was top-notch - Asian cauliflower with sesame seeds, green onion, asian bbq sauce over brown rice and pecan encrusted chicken with pear chutney were soooo good and ordered on the advice of our waitress Lucie who was super! The ambiance gives a rustic feel and I love the style and look. The service was great everyone was nice starting with the host and our server was great. The food I will start with what we didn't like my guest didn't like his steak he said it tasted good but it was too tough even though it was medium cook. He couldn't cut it and then he said it was so tough to chew, the manager did take it off the bill for us. We also tried the block cheese grits I guess it's fried cheese blocked stuffed with grits - it would have been okay but it needs more salt or pepper for me and my guest liking.
