Literally the cutest place, They have indoor and outdoor seating, the cutest decor and ambiance. The baristas are so knowledgeable, I tried the Pandan latte I think it's called, because I told him I wanted something sweet and this was AMAZING. Literally a new addiction of mine! I ordered the Signature Breakfast Sandwich and Coffee Carnitas Sandwich for my hubby. We Loved it!! My coffee was pretty good! I drink a lot of coffee- too much in fact. This place makes the main national coffee chain seem like a dump. I came here after having to take my daughter to a medical office nearby. I ordered a dark chocolate mocha and it was like drinking a dark chocolate candy bar. So good. My wait wasn't very long either despite what some other yelpers have said. Wowowow this place Came in to redeem a free coffee I won on their Instagram & purchased a scone with fig & honey butter. The little things are big things. The pop up card with every drink was such a sweet touch. The scone was stellar & oh boy so glad the amazing staff member recommended it. ($0.50 extra) The scone was $3.50 too. Very reasonable! Thank you kind barista for my delicious and beautiful vanilla latte. The one thing I wish they had was pillows on the benches along the walls. We moved from North Park to La Mesa a few months ago and I have to say this is 10x's better than any gaudy coffee shop in NP. Service: always amazing and the people working there seem to actually enjoy working there and they give great recommendations! Food and coffee: incredible- portions are perfect- not too much but not too little and coffee is delicious. Vibe: 10/10. They offer cash discounts or military discount which is nice. The downfall is the parking. It's street parking and you gotta bring coins! Don't skip the pandan latte!! I came on a Saturday morning and it was BUSY! We waited about 5-7 minutes to order and were nervous about finding a place to sit (luckily there is outdoor seating available, but it was sprinkling outside). The drinks took about 10 minutes and the food was out shortly after. This was worth the wait and I appreciated that the employee at the register was transparent about the wait times. The pandan latte, scone, avocado and beet hummus toast, and biscuits and gravy were all spectacular! We'll definitely return to this cozy shop. We stayed in La Mesa for 3 weeks. Tried two coffee shops closer to our Airbnb (which were the worst), and hit the jackpot with Public Square. Came every morning for the rest of our trip! My review needed to be updated because this is now one of my favorite places to go for coffee with a friend. The Chaga Latte is the best Chaga latte I've had in San Diego. I tried the Avocado and Hummus Toast last week and it was phenomenal. The sourdough is light and fluffy and thick. From the music, to the wonderful baristas, and especially the coffee they take their time and love to make.My go-to items are: the Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte, the right amount of sweet without it overpowering the taste of coffee, and their Breakfast sandwich. The pandan latte with oat milk was amazing! So great I actually came twice within a week lol. It does get busy here, especially on a Sunday morning. Drinks came out faster than the scone we ordered which took about 25ish mins. But it was hot and fresh, and heavenly. The peanut butter Ube butter didn't have much of an Ube taste but it paired so well with it! Service was great, and I will definitely get their scone and butter flight and other food next time. Public Square Coffee Shop was such a delight! It was lively, but it also seemed like a good place to get some work done, the best of both worlds. The decor of live plants throughout the shop was so fun I only had positive interactions with the staff. They have the traditional name call out to pick up your drink and have a table number system for food. I got an Iced Brown Sugar Cinnamon latte which was deliciously flavorful and balanced well, although may be slightly on the sweet side for some. Each drink came with a sweet affirmation which was a memorable touch. I also got the Signature Breakfast Sandwich and added Basil Oil and Arugula, and let me tell you this hit on all marks for me. The focaccia bread was fluffy, the bacon was crisp and the eggs were well cooked. In addition to the breakfast sandwich, we tried the Classic Biscuit and a side of cinnamon butter. These were delicious and I'd be interested in going back to try their Sugar Scones and more of their unique butter flavors. To round it all out I had a warm Chocolate Chip Cookie and although I can't imagine ever finding a bad cookie, this one was particularly delectable and I will add it to my order every time I go back. I felt the pricing was pretty on par for the area, and I felt it was tastier than others priced similarly. One thing I did notice were some of the tables weren't always clean/bussed, but with how busy it was the morning I went I'd imagine it's pretty difficult to be constantly caught up on that. Public Square Coffee House will always have a special place in my heart. In the four years that I lived in La Mesa, this was one of the places that gave me the most joy. Super awesome staff, great coffee and just an amazing shop overall. Prior to COVID, they had open mic nights on Wednesdays and I would walk 20 minutes every Wednesday to see the live performances performed by local talent. It was such an amazing and magical time. As so many others have pointed out and part of what led me here: the scones are the best! There's a crispness to the surface combined with the soft, fluffiness of the inside that is similar to the satisfaction of breaking the delicate top of a creme brulee. The butter flight option for it is the way to go. My fave was the cranberry orange (which I believe is seasonal), but the fig honey and maple cayenne were also delicious. So delicious in fact that I didn't let any go to waste and used the leftover for my toasted bagel at home the next day. No shame. My husband had the signature breakfast sandwich, and it was gone within seconds it seems. I snuck in a bite and was a fan. Maybe next time I'll order a sandwich with a scone for a side? Although their carnitas sandwich looked try-worthy as well. They have seasonal and inventive coffee drinks, such as the black sesame I had, along with staple favorites. Indoor dining still isn't in effect, but they have a cute little alcove off the sidewalk and a few tables available. The person who took our order was sweet, friendly, and engaging, which made it feel more like a neighborhood spot. I also like the little note you receive with your order. My favorite local coffee house. My wife and I live near the La Mesa Village and we enjoy walking with our pups, grabbing coffee, having a bite, and playing cards in the outside seating area. The food is pretty amazing. The breakfast sandwich is my favorite. My wife's favorite is the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. The coffee is great as well! The app they have is fantastic because we can order ahead on busy weekend days. The best thing is the service. I have never had a negative experience when going here. The ice dark chocolate mocha was a satisfying caffeinated beverage to start the day. The grilled cheese sando sandwich was perfectly grilled with subtle, perfectly melted cheese. Ordered: 2-scone flight: it's their signature item, scone was yummy compared to other bakeries, crumbly, buttery Butters: Cinnamon: tastes how you expect, yummy Maple Cayenne: our favorite, good kick Ube: solid potato flavor Lemon Poppyseed: light and crunchy Banana Pudding: tasted a little artificial carnitas sandwich: a little small for what you pay for, coffee rub flavor not that pronounced but the meat was tender and flavorful pandan latte: super strong coffee flavor, would prefer more pandan but I'm also not a 'coffee person' so I don't hold this against them A little pricy but it is in La Mesa's downtown and it's tapas style (for the butter). The breakfast menu is very limited. I asked for water and was directed to a self serve area then chewed out by the waitress for using the wrong cup. Hint- If you dont want patrons to use the "wrong" cups dont put them right by the water container. Speaking of the water container , once I sat down and actually tasted the water I was horrified at the taste and the smell. Gave the water to our dog who hesitantly drank it while choking on it from the taste and smell. Give people regular tap water or clean the container. I kinda wish that there was more avocado and hummus but it was okay since we are having a bad inflation going on. The Carnitas sandwich was on-point. I like the crunch of the toasted Foraccia blended perfectly with the soft tenderness of the espresso-roasted carnitas. To make it better, the pickles red onion added nice acidity to balance with the salt from the Carnitas and the chipotle lime aioli. My latte came with a quote note too. Public Square is a nice coffee place however, the wait time is too long. We've been here four times, we order the breakfast sandwich and it always takes 20 minutes or more. It's perplexing as they aren't short staffed. I want to also point out that when you pay for your order, they expect a tip. So smooth with a light coconut flavor. I also had the Chia Pudding- one of my favorite breakfasts. It is made with Oat milk and the consistency is perfect. The fruit compote is also really good- the perfect amount of sweetness. I've had lunch here before, as well. The Coffee Carnitas is really good. You should check them out. Such a cute spot in downtown La Mesa. I don't live around the area and i happened to be around for an appointment and this place came up. As you walk in you see a cute coffee shop with loads of plants everywhere. Lots of seating inside and the staff is super nice. I came by myself and never felt awkward. There was many people there chatting it up with friends and or working. I wanted to enjoy the sunny weather so I sat outside. You order food, take a seat and the food is brought to you. You do go up to get any drinks you ordered and utensils you grab on your own as well. Made the mistake and waited for food and realized I didn't have utensils so I left my food out there while I grabbed some. The food is delicious I got the avocado & beet-humus toast. 5 stars.
