Rosecrans Ave. Hawthorne, CA To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding an incident that occurred at Public Storage on May 29, 2026, involving an employee named Jennefer. I am deeply concerned about both the condition of my storage unit and the manner in which I was treated while attempting to resolve the issue. On May 29, 2026, I visited my storage unit to organize my belongings and purchased two medium-sized boxes from the office for approximately $7. After entering my storage unit, I immediately noticed a strong odor consistent with mold. I also observed flying insects, which appeared to be either gnats or termites. I do not store any wooden items in my unit, making the presence of possible termites particularly concerning. Additionally, I noticed that portions of the floor had developed white discoloration or blotches that had not been present previously. Concerned about the condition of the unit and the potential impact on my belongings, I brought these issues to Jennefer's attention and asked whether I could be moved to another unit. Jennefer informed me that I could be transferred, but only if I paid approximately $130 because the available unit was a different size. I explained that I could not afford that amount and that the problems with the unit were not caused by me. I requested to be moved to an equivalent-sized unit instead. When I asked whether similar issues had occurred before, Jennefer responded, "Probably." Jennefer then mentioned another unit located closer to my current unit but stated that I would still be required to pay for the transfer. I explained that I had not anticipated arriving to find a unit with a mold odor, flying insects, and visible floor discoloration, and that I was not financially prepared for unexpected transfer fees resulting from conditions beyond my control. At that point, I requested to speak with a supervisor. Initially, my request was ignored. Meanwhile, I had removed my belongings from the unit because of the odor, insects, and visible changes to the floor. Photographs documenting these conditions are attached. Jennefer instructed me to leave my belongings unattended and accompany her to the office. I expressed concern about leaving my items unattended, but she insisted that doing so was necessary if I wanted a different unit assigned. I questioned why she could not assist me at the unit using the tablet device she carried. She informed me that the device was only used for inventory purposes. Shortly thereafter, Jennefer returned and advised me that the transfer fee would be approximately $7 rather than $130. I explained that I could not pay the fee at that moment because I had just used the remaining funds on my prepaid card to purchase the boxes. In response, Jennefer called me "difficult." I again requested to speak with a supervisor. Instead of addressing my request, she left me standing beside my belongings in the hallway. When she returned, she repeated that there was nothing she could do unless I paid the transfer fee. Because I could not obtain cellular reception inside the building to transfer funds onto my prepaid card, I was effectively forced to leave my belongings unattended while attempting to resolve the issue. While I was still trying to address my concerns, another customer entered the office. Despite not having resolved my issue, Jennefer began assisting the other customer. I reminded her that my matter was still pending and that my belongings were unattended in the hallway. She responded that she was going to show the other customer a unit and again stated that she was trying to help me but that I was being "difficult." She made this comment in front of the other customer. I found this public criticism humiliating and highly unprofessional. Being called "difficult" multiple times, especially in front of another customer, significantly increased my anxiety during an already stressful situation involving my personal property and concerns about potential mold contamination. After repeated requests, I was finally allowed to speak with a supervisor identified as Mitzy. Unfortunately, Mitzy informed me that there was nothing she could do and that I would still be required to pay the transfer fee. I questioned whether this was truly Public Storage policy given the condition of the unit. I described the odor, insects, and visible floor issues and requested permission to complete the transfer immediately and pay the fee later if necessary. This request was denied.Eventually, after several attempts to obtain cellular service, I was able to transfer funds onto my prepaid card and pay the fee. During my conversation with Mitzy, I was informed that the transfer fee would be credited back to my account. That reimbursement has not occurred. Out of retaliation, Jennefer moved my unit to the furthest unit in the very back of the building. I left in tears. Racist treatment. read more

Shady Auction Practices, Zero Accountability I fell behind on my monthly bill, and my unit went to auction -- something I understood. But instead of handling the process in good faith, Public Storage took advantage of the situation in a way that felt completely unethical. The first auction brought in a high bid that would have easily cleared my balance. Instead of accepting it, they rejected the bid without explanation, then added another month of charges and re-auctioned the unit -- for significantly less. Between the two auctions, my unit was clearly tampered with and ransacked. I never authorized this access, and they've provided no explanation, no access logs, and no accountability. That's not just unprofessional -- it's potentially illegal. I reached out to everyone in their management chain: Isaac, Hitesh, and Tionna Wedlow. None of them responded in any meaningful or professional way. The only person who treated the situation seriously and professionally was James Bangar -- and I appreciate his effort. Unfortunately, the rest of the team seemed to avoid responsibility entirely. To make matters worse, Jasmine, a staff member, misled me about the auction process and gave false or vague information throughout. I requested documentation multiple times and was ignored. Public Storage's actions -- and lack of transparency -- make it clear they do not operate with integrity. If you fall on hard times, expect them to exploit the situation rather than work with you. I can't even begin to describe what a criminal enterprise this place is. My dad passed away at the beginning of last year. He had hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of guitars and other music equipment that my sister and I needed to store while we figured out how to navigate everything. This was the closest storage unit to his house, so we got a unit here. Because of the nature of what we were storing, I was very careful to secure a unit in the back, and to move everything while nobody else was present so they couldn't see what was coming in, as multiple instruments is obviously a high value target for thieves. About a month after moving everything in, I get a call one afternoon saying that "there was a burglary and that it looked like my unit had an attempted break-in, but it doesn't look like anything was taken." I asked when they discovered it, and they said at 7am when they came in. Mind you, they called me at around 1pm. So, I go down to see what had happened. When I arrived at the unit, I entered through the back, and walked up to the unit to find the door completely mangled with something like a crowbar or similar. I muscle the door open, and basically everything is gone. Nearly $100,000 worth of guitars and other instruments. After initial disbelief, I started to walk up to the office. As I'm walking down one of the aisles, I see one of my dad's guitar amps just sitting in the middle of the hallway. So I grab it, walk it back to the unit, and then head back up to the office. I walk in and find two girls chatting and laughing, sitting there seemingly without a care in the world. When I asked why they had left the amplifier in the middle of the hallway, and why they hadn't called me sooner, they just looked at me like deer in the headlights and said "oh, we didn't know what unit that was from." The funny thing is, the thieves apparently entered from the front, and just by complete chance happened to head straight to my unit and burglarize it, and half heartedly pried open three other ones at random that just so happened to be completely empty... Quite convenient. They told me that the police officer had already left and filed a report, and I demanded that he come back, and they basically said "well... He's already gone, so I don't know what to tell you." So, I call 911, and the officer is sent back. We go back to the unit, and as I'm talking to him, he says "yeah, I reviewed the tapes, and you can clearly see the burglars coming in, but the cameras here are so bad that you can't make out the license plates, and it's too blurry to get any sort of ID on the suspects. But, unfortunately, this happens here all the time." That's right, the police officer said that this public storage unit gets hit all the time with burglaries. The curious part is, the only people that saw me moving things in were the employees there who could see it on the camera in the back. And even more curious that the burglars broke in and just so happened to randomly make their way through the entire storage complex to my unit and burglarize that one... The one that happened to have almost $100,000 worth of gear in it. This was absolutely an inside job, and an employee there absolutely tipped somebody off that there was a nice payday in our storage space. And when I proposed that theory to the officer, he said that was most certainly what happened, although there was no way to prove it, unfortunately. So, since we still had several items that weren't actually worth anything in the storage unit and didn't have a way to move them anywhere else at the time, they gave us a different unit. They didn't offer to refund us anything, we just had to sign a new contract. When we moved into the new unit, the cost was $277 a month. And public storage, after all they had put us through, has been hiking up the price every couple months and is now charging us almost $450 a month. Legitimately criminal. The kicker is that they tried to tell me "don't worry, you have insurance on the storage space, they should take care of everything." Well, when you sign the agreement, make sure you read the fine print... Because the insurance policy maxes out at $5000. And specifically states not to store anything of any sort of financial or sentimental value. I'm sorry, what? So you can rent a storage unit, but make sure you don't put anything valuable in it, or anything that you care about. It's unbelievable. The fact that public storage continues to operate like this, raising prices on people every month, doesn't take any of that money and invest it in better, security cameras, or doesn't hire a security guard for $25 an hour to be on the premises after hours is just beyond unacceptable. And of course, the underfunded and overworked police department did their report and did the investigating that they could, but came up empty and basically said "sorry, there's really nothing else we can do." I've rented a storage unit here for a few months, and the units are fine. The facility is relatively clean, and despite the occasional hiccup (broken door, broken gate, broken elevator, etc), things generally get fixed reasonably fast. Unfortunately, the staff is extremely rude and multiple members of their staff have gone out of their way to harass me, and this has occurred more than once. A few months ago, one of the staff members approached me while I was parked in a delineated parking space inside the access-controlled area past the gate (there are about 40 parking spots, and only about three to eight are in use at any given time). This staffer told me that I could not park my vehicle there. I took a look at the parking space and commented that it was clearly a delineated parking space for customers and didn't have a 'No Parking' sign or any orange cones, or anything that might indicate that customers couldn't park there. I gave this employee an opportunity to explain themselves and perhaps explain why they would ask customers not to park in this particular parking spot. The employee didn't have an answer, could not provide any reasoning as to why customers shouldn't park in that particular parking spot, and flipped out and started screaming, which made me feel very uncomfortable and afraid for my physical safety. This employee had clearly mentally snapped and was a risk to others. I had to resort to filming my encounter with this psycho employee because I was concerned that they might physically attack me. I assumed they would deescalate the situation and walk away, but they did the opposite, and they actually physically approached me a second time, rather than walk away and leave me alone. This employee had no reason to approach me in the first place, as I was parked in a proper parking spot, I wasn't blocking the doors or the loading dock area, etc. Today, I had another bad experience, this time (at least initially) with a different employee. This second employee approached me while I was reorganizing some items in my storage unit and told me that I should be loading this into, or out of, my storage unit at all times, so by omission, they were trying to tell me that being in one's storage unit and reorganizing one's own items was NOT PERMITTED. I explained that I hadn't seen anything in the lease that said I could not be in my storage unit during open hours to reorganize my belongings, and I further stated that I had, in fact, brought some things into my storage unit and was planning on bringing some things out when I left, but this second employee continued to imply that I was doing something wrong. I informed her that I was not breaking any of the terms and conditions of the lease that I had signed with Public Storage, and that as a result, I hadn't done anything wrong, and that she had made a mistake in approaching me, warning me, and that her behavior constitutes harassment, and was unacceptable. She shrugged and left. I came back in to the office 10 minutes later to get clarification about this alleged violation, and the psycho employee #1, who I had a frightening encounter with a few months ago, was also in the office this time. I asked some question about the alleged violation, the second employee said that it wasn't her complaining about me being at my storage unit to reorganize my belongings, but rather that it was her district manager who had made a mention of it, and that they had instructed her to speak to me about it and tell me that I was not permitted to be in my storage unit during open hours unless I was actively loading or unloading things from my car. I explained to her that this prohibition was not anywhere to be seen in the lease that I signed with Public Storage, and that as a result, it wasn't real and was unenforceable. At this point, psycho employee #1, who harassed me a few months ago and went crazy and yelled, chimed into the conversation and said that being at one's storage unit for four hours during open hours was an unreasonable amount of time. I explained to her that I had a lot of belongings in storage there, and that I sometimes need to inventory them and rearrange them. I then reiterated that reorganizing one's belongings isn't mentioned anywhere in the lease as a prohibited activity. I then asked these two staffers to have their district manager send me a letter if they believed that I was breaking any of the terms and conditions of the lease. They said that they would contact their district manager to make that happen. At this point, I have been harassed by Public Storage employees on two separate occasions, and I have had it with this company. I will be contacting their manager and lodging a formal written complaint. If you're looking for a storage unit, I'd only recommend this place if you're going to have hired staff do the loading and the unloading of your unit, and if you're never going to need to come to the unit yourself to rearrange things. read more

There is usually only one employee there and they are usually not in the front office so you have to call and wait if you need help. Initially they said that carts are readily available, "just call me and I'll get you one." However, when we were moving our stuff out, all the carts were being used. We waited 3 hours for an available cart, then the employee on duty said she had to lock them up and made me immediately take my boxes off the cart, she wouldn't even let me roll it to my car to unload it. (That employee, Carmen, was extremely rude. Another customer I talked with told me that Carmen told her that the customer's partner is not legally blind, as the customer had told her, because he was walking. I told Carmen that it is probably illegal for an employee to comment on a customer's disability. She responded by angrily interrupting and videotaping me.) I would not again use this company at this location if it were the only storage facility in town. read more

A piece of shit! Called multiple times during the past two weeks couldn't get to anyone at this location. I needed to cut my lock due to losing the key. I just went today to process it and was told my Bertha oh I can't process because I need to see your physical id. I told her I have a picture you can see. They I stated I've already put a durable lock on my unit and she said I have to purchase one thru them. That's incorrect! I then started the fill out the page and she said she wouldn't sign it due to no id. I then asked to see that in writing because I signed up fully online with no one seeing my physical id in person. The units are fine, there is no customer service available and the rates continually increase. The dollies are all locked up, literally chained to bars or stored inside the locked office. It doesn't matter what time during office hours you go, no one is ever in the office to access the dollies. Bring extra people with you to move your stuff in and out. We rented in mid month Dec 2022, we were just notified of another rent increase, basically $100 more than when we rented the unit 1 year ago. We're moving our stuff out this month. read more

If negative stars were an option, easily a negative 5. Rent goes up at least every other month. In less than a year, our rent went up $200. The facility is safe and secure, so secure that I wasn't able to get through the gate because my code was deactivated for no reason. This happened twice. The final time our code didn't work was at the most inconvenient time. We hired a moving company to get all items out. They were scheduled to be there at 7am. Since nobody works until 9:30am, I had to postpone movers a day. The front desk had zero F's to give about this major inconvenience and additional cost to us. In fact, they said we were entering the code incorrectly. Ya know, the code we had been using for a year. The "manager" begrudgingly changed our code. Every single person that works the front desk should really switch jobs. Something that either requires a tw@tty attitude or a job without any human interaction. To be so salty AND incompetent is a perplexing combination. Their job is to assist people renting units, yet they are so put off by having to do so. My distain for these people isn't based on just 1 interaction. We had to rent multiple units for almost a year for a home renovation and move. After years of paying my rent on time, Ive been rewarded with a notice telling me that my storage unit will be going from $95 a month to $130 a month. I tried to chat about the increase on their website and the agent ended the conversation after I simply asked, "why is my rent going up by almost 30%". I have now called the location 5 or 6 times and they do not pick up. Carmen is specifically a very rude and inappropriate woman who takes advantage of her position and will make sure she has pushed people outside of normal and fair situations. Personally I'm not sure if she does things legally due to the fact that she tried to deny me and my husband access to our unit yet after I contacted corporate she changed it to accessable for move out. She clearly doesn't have any moral boundaries or if you try to speak to her will become completely comfortable with being there to make your time hard there by being unfair and inappropriate. SAFETY ALERT! SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY I've been renting here for 7 yrs now, clean facility, temperature controlled, well lit, convenient, friendly staff. Rent is ending so these past 2 weeks I've been emptying out my unit so I'm constantly in and out of the facility. My first encounter of a suspicious activity 7/13/23. I was by myself (right? Not so smart these days esp in a storage facility) emptying my unit and saw a man coming from my right which is near the end of that hall, walking, probably put some stuff in his unit since he wasn't carrying anything. 10-15 mins passed (by this time i thought he had left) , i am walking to the elevators going north which was a minute walk from my unit, as i was about to press the button going down, this same man appears out of nowhere! He's now north, nowhere near where i saw him earlier! Coincidence? I don't think so, possibly he had 2 units? I don't think so either! The building is huge! You just know if someone's actions is not adding up, you get that feeling in your gut (i'm not trying to point fingers at anyone, just intuition). Luckily he didn't go to the elevator with me (i went in the elevator walking backwards with my stuff just in case and was pepper spray ready). He also seemed to be mentally unstable. I even smiled at him (nervous smile i guess) just to let him know that i was not scared of his ass!! I am now walking to the exit, i hear the damn footsteps again and guess who it is?? This man again! Clearly following me!!! His truck was parked backwards and tell me why he went around the back of his truck to get into the driver's seat! Cause he didn't want me to see that he was following me! Unfortunately, i had my car parked across from his and this dude just sitting there watching me load my stuff in the car! Creep!!! So i finished loading my car and had to go back inside (wish I didn't) but i had to leave my dolly in the unit cause i got no space in my car. So i went inside (take note, this man still sitting in his truck), i was walking very fast going to my unit and back to the elevators which took me about 5 mins total. So now i'm walking back to my car getting ready to leave, and see that the man was not in his truck! Make it make sense! He clearly waited for me to load my stuff in the car, waited a bit so I won't notice, and went back inside!! I know this is very detailed but PLEASE BE CAREFUL! LADIES PLEASE CARRY PEPPER SPRAY AND JUST BE VERY VIGILANT! I DON'T CARE IF IT MAY SEEM LIKE A "COINCIDENCE" BUT IF YOU FEEL LIKE SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, JUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! I would not recommend this location. Public storage overall is a scam because they continuously raise the prices within a year. Daisy and another girl that I can only describe as alien bobble head who claim they are managers yet act extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. The alien bobble head girl goes out of her way to make customer's life harder. Although I am thankful they helped me rush to get my things out of there. Every time I went to the storage I hoped to not run into them. Was in need of a small storage space for some boxes we didn't have space for at home. We opted for the 5x4 box at $32 a month. We were able to store about 7 clear bins as well as a few smaller boxes comfortably inside. Only downside is that you have to access this space via ladder as they are above another storage unit. The ladder was a little rough and I didn't feel 100% safe on it without somebody holding it. You also need to enter in your gate code a few different times before being able to access inside which I'm ok with the extra security, but can be inconvenient to have to keep putting stuff down to enter the code. They offer a free pulley cart to help move stuff from the car to storage. The women at the front desk were very pleasant and answered all my questions. Overall a decent experience. Be aware there are a lot of additional fees. Save yourself the insurance if you have personal property coverage on a homeowners or renters policy. You also have to buy a lock. We plan on buying an additional lock for extra safety. read more

And It should stay that rate- be lower, even, because of the persistent ant problem in my space. It's been this way since settlement last year. I have not stored food at all during my stay, yet every visit I make there had ants crawling around! I told a manager there in late fall who she said they'd spray the area. When I returned I saw traps in the leftmost rear corner. While they are fewer, you can still several crawling around. And why? THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY FOOD OR FOOD RESIDUE IN MY UNIT! I disagree with the increasing rates. I motion to keep my payment at the monthly $27 rate. My experience with Public Storage that they don't deserve anymore of my hard-earned money monthly. She explained to me my options on different units (prices and sizes). She even suggested me to reserved a unit for a few days to see what was going to be available by the first of the month. I recently rented a storage at the Hawthorne location. I checked in on May 5th and got the keys. Later on May 8th I arranged moving more stuff in. I was at the gate around 5:40pm, perfectly within the access hours (6am - 9pm), stated clearly on the website, email communications, the envelope I got, and the gate of the site. However, my gate code didn't work. I called the customer service only to find it was set to OFFICE HOURS(9:30am-5pm), not the access hours. This was totally unexpected because the access hours were WRITTEN in all kinds of communications.And the customer service was not able to correct it. This has caused tremendous inconvenience to me because I have made arrangements and had a friend driving 60miles all the way to help with the moving. Also I had to take extra weekday time because I was not able to move my stuff on Sunday. On Monday May 9th, I called the property manager and she had no idea how the code was set to office hours. This is completely the fault on Public Storage's side yet no one in this company I talked to (both in person and on 5+ phone calls) felt bad. DO NOT use this business. Once you paid, they wouldn't care about you at all. Shame on you Public Storage. read more
