We had to order our own drinks at the bar quite a few times and the place was not busy at all despite there being a live band. The band was great but very loud, so expect to listen to the music versus talking to each other. We had this mind set going in and really enjoyed ourselves! I got the piggy mac with brisket based on recommendations from the servers. It was pretty good but some of the brisket was slightly dry and barbecue sauce was needed. I did not like the corncake. Mine was cold and rubbery. Overall I'd recommend the dish to others. There were 6 of us who also shared the nachos-- the serving size is huge on those! We went to the aquarium and needed to grab a bite to eat before hitting the road back to Knox. We were planning on Burger Republic until I remembered the recommendation of my colleague who lives in Chatt and saw Puckett's across the street. We walked over to look at the menu outside and saw they had a reasonably-priced kids menu with items our kids had been requesting. They have a great variety of BBQ/American cuisine and we were seated pretty quickly, along with crayons and paper kid menus. Our server arrived immediately, albeit seemingly quite unhappy. We admittedly had a bit of fomo with the servers at the tables surrounding us so pleasant and jovial. However, we got everything we ordered, as ordered. -Burger kid meals: these burgers were about half the width of the bun they were in and very overcooked. One of our kiddos said it was too hard to chew. Our other child gobbled hers, though! -Grilled cheese kid meal: Our kid said it was good, but not fresh, with the cheese having congealed. -Fried chicken club: This was good, but needed more moisture and I could have done without a 3rd layer of bread (I removed it). I appreciated that the pimento cheese was a really thin layer, as it often overpowers dishes. I really liked the sandwich after adding some BBQ sauce to it. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned (we all loved the fries). -Mojo burger: Cooked well, but the pulled pork was a bit disappointing with the lacking smoked flavor. Great brioche bun. The dollop of baked beans was a unique addition but nothing super special. The spicy BBQ had just enough kick to add some pizzazz to the burger. -Blackberry fruit sweet tea: SO good. The kids and I all got this and it was sweet but not overpoweringly so with just a hint of fruit flavor. Reminded me of the peach tea at Olive Garden. -Beer flight: well-priced and ample pours, but a bummer that their own beer was out of stock. Overall, it was a fine experience. We loved the atmosphere and the cool stage area, which would be fun to see in action at night. The BBQ sauce and drinks were great, but the food and service were just okay. Went on a Wednesday at about 4:30 place was empty except for one couple. Place was pig and spacious and smelled of stale beer. We were sat and greeted by our server. Menu looked good and the appetizers were 1/2 off so we got the sampler. When the plate came it also brought on the fruit flies which were a nuisance the whole meal. The sampler was alright. The sausage was good and they give you plenty, the fried green tomatoes were not that impressive they were thin and chewy, pimento balls were good. I ordered the smoked bologna sandwich, it was good but could have been better. My wife got the greens and the skillet Mac n cheese, not sure why it was called skillet Mac n cheese, it wasn't made in the skillet it was scooped into the skillet and served( you could tell because the bread crumb top was at the bottom. First off, don't use this delivery service. There is no sense of urgency in getting your food to you. It took hours to get this delivered, after being texted the food was picked up at the restaurant twice. In between calling the restaurant and being told our order sat under the lights for over an hour, where the restaurant had to call Dinner Delivered to ask them to pick it up, and waiting over 30 minutes afterwards (we are not far from the restaurant), we were not happy with the delivery driver's liassaz-faire attitude (he was tipped ahead of time), saying he was busy when I asked why it took so long from food pick up to delivery?? The food: Considering what happened, we had to reheat everything and the results were less than stellar, as can be expected under those circumstances. The chicken quality seemed poor and riddled with fat. It was supposed to be a tenderized chicken steak, but it was nothing of the sort. The mashed potatoes had the skins in them. I know this is a personal preference, but I always find it's a lazy thing when a restaurant doesn't take the time to take an extra step to peel potatoes. The only thing I enjoyed was the coleslaw. I went with a large group (11) on a super busy day (Memorial Day). As I approached the building, I could smell the fragrance of the BBQ pit. I already knew it would be difficult to get a bad rating from me because the air tasted so good. The 25-30 minute wait was expected for the size of our group. As we walked in, I felt like I was at home; the old-fashioned wooden chairs and tables kept with the vibe. The waitress was friendly, and even being busy, as stated, she did a great job keeping up with our many requests. The menu was packed with mouth-watering choices. I decided to go with my faithful pulled pork because I have a decent baseline to judge it. And a glass of their special fruit tea. My verdict on the pulled pork was that the flavor was rich and did not need any of their BBQ sauce. However, pairing it with either of the sauces they had on the table made it that much better. And for the tea, it was so good I purchased the gallon after I saw they offered it. The price of the food is spot on. The portions and the quality were well worth it. The tea was delicious but I don't know if it was $21 delicious. Overall, I highly recommend this establishment to anyone who even remotely likes BBQ. read more

Went here with my boyfriend while we were visiting Chattanooga for the weekend. It definitely stuck out to us as a place we wanted to try. I am so glad that we did! We ordered the cherry smoked wings (half hot and half whiskey glaze) and the fried green beans for our starters. The green beans were cooked well and very flavorful. The wings were juicy and decent sized, but could have used a bit more flavor to them. I ordered the meatloaf for my entree. It came with mashed potatoes and green beans. The gravy sauce on top was so good! I was impressed with its texture and flavor. I also got a side of the Mac n cheese, which my boyfriend ate most of because he loved it that much! My boyfriend ordered the shrimp and grits. It came with collard greens and had their BBQ sauce drizzled on top. He really enjoyed it and liked the BBQ sauce a lot. For dessert we ordered the cobbler of the day. It was cherry cobbler and it was hands down the best cobbler I've had in a long time. The inside is cute and cozy, if you want to experience a good southern meal, this may be the place to try. Despite being a southerner, true southern food isn't something I eat out very often, most places don't get the "home cooked, made with love" vibe right. For me, Puckett's did just that. Everything was wonderful and the hostess was very sweet. Next time I'm in town I will definitely be dining in. My only real complaint was that the cobbler had more of a bread pudding bottom "crust" rather than a true cobbler crust, don't get me wrong though it was still delicious, just couldn't get through all the breading with the little bit of fruit/filling my slice had and had to kind of pick it apart. read more

While at our earlier stop at Chattanooga Choo Choo 6 weeks ago, we asked a hotel bellhop where to go for good bbq, and he suggested Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant, which turned out to be a very good suggestion! Puckett's has a nice sized free parking lot, but, apparently, it's not big enough for all of its customers to park at. Plus this parking lot is so close to the aquarium, so I'd bet that many aquarium customers parked in Puckett's lot. We ended up parking in a paid parking garage and took a five minute (if that long) walk to Puckett's. We were greeted by the host immediately upon entering. The smell of barbecue was strong in the air. The restaurant was about half full with customers. The restaurant furniture and counters were made up mostly of worn wood. It all looked welcoming and felt comfortable. 80's music played at a medium volume through overhead speakers. We were seated at a table for two near the stage, which, at night, is where live entertainment is featured. Our server introduced herself and told us that she'd be back soon with menus and everything else we needed. She actually DID return soon and we were able to have a mutual friendly chat about Atlanta (she had recently visited Atlanta) and the food at Puckett's. The server told us that she had tried just about everything on the menu, and that we could not get a bad meal here. I ordered the Meat and 3 (sides) - beef brisket, baked beans, cole slaw and sweet potato fries. R also ordered the Meat and 3, but he customized his order to include pulled pork, cole slaw and skillet Mac n cheese (substituted for 2 sides). Both of our meals came with a Cajun corn cake. When our food was brought to us by our server, the meats, baked beans, sweet potato fries, skillet Mac n cheese and Cajun corn cakes were hot; the rest of the food was cold, as expected. I had expected the beef brisket to be cut into slices, but it looked more chopped than sliced. I like my brisket with some flavorful fat on/in it, and this brisket was perfect to me! The brisket flavor was so delicious that it didn't need any sauce, but, because I love spicy, I poured some of the spicy bbq sauce on my plate and used it as a dipping sauce for the meat. Sooo good! The baked beans had a nice sweet flavor (molasses?) to them, and the cole slaw was crunchy and had a nice vinegary taste that was not overwhelming. I sampled some of R's pulled pork and skillet mac n cheese; the pork had a slight smokey flavor and the mac n cheese was gooey cheesy. I thought the Cajun corn cake was a little odd. It looked like a pancake, and the taste faintly reminded me of jalapeño corn bread, but not as spicy. Our server was really good at the beginning, but she disappeared for a little while, and no one else took her place. We were waiting for her to come back so we could get the check, but we didn't see her for almost 10 minutes. If we ever come back to Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant, we'll surely try other items, like their biscuits and gravy, or country fried steak, southern fried chicken, shrimp and grits, desserts, and even their breakfasts. Oh, and the "grocery" part, I'm assuming, describes their little retail area that they have in the main dining area. I was thankful that the bellhop at the hotel suggested Puckett's. Puckett's is a very nice Southern style restaurant that we found on our recent trip to Chattanooga. The restaurant looked really cool and correct for the type of cooking they do and the service was top notch. We tried 2 appetizers the first of which was their nachos. They load them up with queso, jalapeños, bbq drizzle, sour cream, cilantro and a side of salsa. We added some pulled pork to it and it was delicious. I do wish they had put a bit more sauce on it but we added some from the sauces they put at the table. We also tried their Cherry Smoked Wings which I got with hot sauce (mild, bbq, and whiskey glaze was also available.) The wings were cooked perfectly and the smokey flavour really came through. The hot sauce was okayish but not especially hot or flavourful. For our main course my wife and I split the Whole Farm. It was a bbq sampler of sorts beef brisket, pulled pork, smoked half chicken, baby back ribs, baked beans, and collard greens. That was all very well executed with my personal favourite being the chicken folled closely by the brisket. I liked their spicy bbq sauce on it although their original sauce is very good too. All in all the food, atmosphere, and people are all great and was a great stop on my vacation. High recommendation. read more

So we did a long walk on the Riverwalk and by the time we reached the Aquarium, needed to find a place to eat. Saw the 4 star Yelp reviews and figured it would be a solid choice. Nice clean place on arrival, open casual feel. Greeted and offered choice of seats, Katie introduced herself and said she would be guiding us through the menu. Nice selection of beers, and as it was Happy Hour; beer, wine and mule selections discounted with 1/2 price appies. Menu had a wide selection, I chose the BBQ Platter with pulled pork and brisket, 3 sides, all tender and perfect at $15.99. B had the Nashville Cheesesteak with fries at $13.99. He said the brisket was perfect but the cheez wizz on the steak was a negative. Menu had lots of choices and the atmosphere was perfect to carry a conversation without shouting. Katie led the meal and was very attentive, staged the timing of apps and meal, as well as checked in drinks. Side note- reason for 5 and not 4....the Manager was actively involved in working the room, checking in on guests and wiping tables to help turn them faster for waiting guests. I really like when it's a Team approach. So, great spot for a nice comfortable meal, perfect for couples, families and large groups. Meal was the perfect ending to our day in Chattanooga. read more

John Greenleaf Whittier was an American Quaker poet. That's relevant to this review. I'm visiting Chattanooga from Birmingham, Alabama. I had timed tickets to the Aquarium, for when they open. I left home bright and early and hit the road, not stopping once. I left the house without breakfast, but not without taking my morning insulin shot. While waiting for the Aquarium to open I felt a little woozy. I checked my glucose thingy in my arm and it was no wonder I felt woozy. My sugar was way low. I looked around for somewhere to get something to eat. Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant was right next door. I trotted over there but didn't have time to order breakfast--I had a timed ticket to the Aquarium and didn't want to dilly dally. I went inside and appealed for help. "My blood sugar is dangerously low. Can I get some fruit to go?" The server jumped into action. Thirty seconds later I had some fruit and a cup of water. Disaster averted. So three hours later when I finished touring the Aquarium and it was time to grab some lunch, I knew I had to go back to Puckett's. They did save my life, after all. As luck would have it, when I was seated, it was in that same server's section. "You're back!" she greeted me. "And still alive, thanks to you!" I said. I'd checked their menu online while walking over and thought check out the mean and three, but then I saw the fried ribs appetizer. Fried ribs? What sorcery is this? I asked if I could have them as my entrée instead of an app, and add a veg. Sure, I could. I'm particular about my BBQ sauce. Some are sweet, some are spicy, some are mustardy, some are vinegary, some places glop it on so thick you can barely taste the meat. I always ask for the sauce on the side. My server said pointed out the bottles of sauce on the table and said, "I'll just tell them 'no sauce' and you can then add whichever sauce you like." Perfect. For my veg I got the southern green beans. A food runner brought the meal out to me. I noticed they ribs were covered in a thick helping of BBQ sauce. Oh well, I'll live. I started on the green beans first. Pretty good beans. Then I started the little cup of slaw that came with them. Pretty good slaw. My server came by to check on me and I said in passing that the ribs came with sauce on them. She was disappointed on my behalf. "Shall I take them back and have them try again?" I thought about it. I don't like being "that guy" and unless the sauce was too spicy, I could probably make do. I even told her I don't like being "that guy." She assured me it would be no problem and I said, okay then, and she took the plate away. She came back a moment later and said they were frying me up a fresh batch. A couple minutes after that she brought some fried ribs, no sauce to me. Alas. Someone in the kitchen clearly thought, "Why should I toss these perfectly good ribs in the trash, and fry some new one for Mr. Persnickety?" Instead, they removed the sauce from the ribs they'd already prepared and dropped them back in the fryer to remove all evidence of the sauce. How do I know this is what happened? The first plate of ribs that were brought to me, though sauced, were thick and meaty. The sauceless ribs were dried up, thin, desiccated, and sad. They were difficult to eat. I had to gnaw at them to get the meat, or what used to be meat, off the bone. They were not tasty. There was one rib, much larger than its brothers, with a bit of meat close to the bone that hadn't yet fully fossilized. That tiny bit of meat showed what these ribs could have been, had they only been fried once. That one morsel showed the potential of these ribs, that was never to be. If only I had stuck to my original intention to order a meat & 3. If only the ribs had come out unsauced the first time. If only I hadn't sent them back when they came out sauced. If only the cook hadn't cut corners and re-fried them. If only that cook had called in sick today, so someone else would have prepared them. If, and If, and if. The poet John Greenleaf Whittier wrote, "of all sad tales of tongue and pen/the saddest are these: it might have been." The server was determined to give me a five-star experience--twice in one day. Someone in the kitchen was just as determined to give me a one-star experience. So, I've split the difference and given Puckett's three stars. read more

Staff was super nice, they have a gluten friendly menu, but the food was just okay- nothing spectacular although pretty expensive. Drinks were okay- we ordered a few cocktails that were pretty sweet and never offered water. Location is great- the area near the aquarium is a favorite to walk around. Parking can be tough but there are several pay lots near by. I had been wanting to try this place for some time, I'm glad I did, however I can't say that I'll be back. Well, they didn't put any ice in and filled the glass to the top instead of filling half of it with ice. It's the little things like this that make a difference in a diner's experience and it's good to see an establishment get that. After a long walk through the aquariums we landed hear with absolutely no expectations. Seated quickly. Drinks tea, sodas, blue moon, armaretta sour with dbl shot, loaded nachos with pulled pork, pulled pork sandwiches, fries, mac n cheese fried chicken sandwich. Everything was pretty good, my sandwich was not as hot ( meaning warmth) as it should have been but was still edible and pretty good otherwise. The sandwich was suppose to have cole slaw on it but they forgot it, when brought to servers attn it was corrected. Cost of all of this was around $80 bucks. Decent price, decent service. Will visit again. Bathrooms get 2 stars because per our party both men and women were stinky and unkept. read more
