If you want to go out and have a terrible time dictated by condescending bartenders and bouncers who think that their job is incredibly more important than it actually is then this is the spot for you!!! Unless you want to stand in a circle about 10 feet away from everyone else in your party, the maybe avoid this really boring and underwhelming bar. It has a $5 cover which is honestly 5 time as much as ANYONE in Wichita should be charging. Right next door XY has NO cover and NO rude staff. I've lived in Manhattan, St. Louis, Austin, AND LA and NEVER BEEN treated the way I was treated here. Basically if you've had one drink, they believe that you are too intoxicated to be there and are incredibly disrespectful. This is going to be my toughest review by far for the following reason, Sunday-Friday this is a totally different bar, but Saturday it is a whole different animal. Sunday - Friday it is always going to be relaxed with great service. You're going to actually be able to enjoy the atmosphere and hear the people around you. Saturday- This is by far the busiest place in old town. The music is great, but incredibly loud, you have to go outside to hold a conversation. Prices- good, this place actually has better drink prices compared to most and the covers only 5$ which is sweet for how many women come in there. Atmosphere- it is packed wall to wall every Saturday and you can't really relax unless you go outside, the dance floor is so packed that everyone looks like sardines. Also it is damn near impossible to get a drink unless you find a waitress. The wait at the bars are insane. Security is very chill and professional and the crowd is generally well behaved. You can get in wearing just about anything which is nice since so many places downtown have their own codes. Overall- This is the only bar that polices itself like it's in a bigger city which is nice. The prices are very good compared to competitors and can't be beat unless you go to rock island. The only issue is that it is so packed and so loud that it's hard to enjoy the bar unless you go Sunday-Friday. I actually think that on Saturday they should have a limit of 150 ppl, but hey they're making money so I get it. Also getting a drink is crazy difficult so I would at least consider having beer stations places around the bar for people who just want a bottle. Overall I would recommend. Pretty cool ambiance. Drinks are well made, but I typically stick to beer. One of the bigger bars in town; seems to attract a lot of bachelorette parties. The waitresses are pretty friendly and reasonably fast for how busy it gets. Plenty of room to walk around and talk to people. The cover charge on the weekends is annoying when there isn't a live band. Wichita isn't "happening" enough to dictate a cover charge. Even though the cover is annoying, it does a pretty good job of crowd control. The type of people that are willing to pay a $5 cover in Wichita, are not the type of people to start a fight at a bar. It is a good restraunt, which is a loose term, more food and bar. The food isn't bad, been here a couple of times. I had the special bierock, I wasn't impressed. It just tasted, weird/tasteless. Now their burgers are really good. They are good in size and taste. They are a Coke place, so that's a plus. They have a lot of TV'S on the country music channel, which would be great if you like country. They have indoor and outdoor sitting. They usually have the garage door open for outside seating. The Pump House is a cool little place that started as a gas station, opened up the bar, and the bar overtaking the business of the gas station - they only this month stopped selling gas (though also possibly because everyone just drives up and parks in front of the place). From a nightlife perspective, the place is a nice medium between some of the trendier-looking neighbors on the street, though business can range from a packed house to the bar being completely empty. I'm not a nightlife kind of guy, so I am more interested in the food. I ordered a cheeseburger, which was fairly ordinary in a good way - cooked medium-well, lettuce, onions, tomato, and cheese. The fries were pretty great due to their being made in-house. I didn't intend on a cup of soup beforehand, but the hamburger soup featured on the menu interested me, and I thought it would pair well with the hamburger burger. I was horribly, horribly wrong, not because the pairing didn't work, but because the soup was very poorly made with diced onions and celery, sliced carrots, diced tomatoes, and unseasoned ground beef floating in a water base. When I was eating, the bartender asked me if it tasted like a burger. In my day to day life, I've picked up a facial expression a Charlie Chaplin film - I can't remember which - where the man has to eat something he doesn't like in front of another person. To respond to the eagerly-awaiting server, he scrunches up his face in a way that may either be construed as a forced smile or a thinly veiled portrait of disappointment. This is the face I had to pull out when tasting that soup. It was not good. It was so disappointing, in fact, that I developed a recipe for a true hamburger (bacon cheeseburger, actually) soup. It starts with a sweated mirepoix blended with beef broth and sharp cheddar cheese melted into it. Frenched caramelized onions are added, as are browned and julienned potatoes, and half of a head of chopped lettuce. The protein arrives by way of boneless short ribs, braised for four hours, half in a mustard-based liquid and the other half in a ketchup-based liquid. The soup is topped with a tomato-pickle relish and pieces of bacon. It worked pretty well, though not without faults of its own, what with it being a first draft and all. BUT in any case, it was a hell of a lot better than the watery vegetables and lifeless meat I got at the restaurant. I suppose the Pump House should get some credit for the idea, but on the whole, a poor soup, a decent burger, and some great fries amounts to an indifferent three stars for the food. read more

I have frequented the Pumphouse many a time on weekend nights for drinks. I usually have a good time (but who am I kidding - I have a fun time no matter where we go in Old Town). I don't love the fratty crowd, as I feel like I'm getting a little too old for that business, but it doesn't matter that much as long as I have good company. The other night I visited for dinner, as I had bought the groupon for an app and two sandwich meals. I swear that I had checked the menu beforehand, because I try to make sure there are vegetarian options, but apparently I didn't look it over too thoroughly. There are no veg sandwich options, except for the grilled cheese, which I didn't really think would be worth my time...I like to be a little more adventurous with my food. Anyway, my friend and I started out with the fried pickles, which were yummy! They also gave us a TON of them...which was awesome. When I asked about a vegetarian sandwich option besides the grilled cheese, the server was super helpful and nice about it. He suggested I try one of their wraps, without the meat, and add in all of their veggies they use on their pizza. Not only were they willing to do this, but they didn't charge me extra (I hate it when I sub veggies in for meat and restaurants charge me extra...so thanks Pumphouse!). The wrap came with typical ridged chips. Although I was very impressed with the service, the wrap was underwhelming. I took most of it home for leftovers, and the next day I paired it with some store bought peanut sauce. That turned out to be the best decision ever. I think if I were to go back for food here, I would probably stay away from the sandwiches and try some of the pizza. I'm not sure I'll be drawn back too quickly, though, as I think there are too many other great options in Old Town. read more

I played it safe when I first went. I ordered Tenders, fries and a beer to watch a football game. I sat outside which was nice. They offered me Wifi which was a bonus. The waitress was really nice and attentive. Not like one of those places where you feel like you are being "bothered". The food was a great size portion. The 2nd time coming to pumphouse and I will not be back! I have worked in the customer service and restaurant industry for years now and I never have been treated the way I was when I went to this location. I was at the bar waiting to be greeted for probably almost 10 minutes when a bartender with red hair SCREAMS "IDs!!"... No "hello" "how are we doing tonight", I started rummaging through my pockets for my ID while this woman was literally standing there glaring at me, handed it to her, and she SNATCHED it from my hand. She glanced at it and asked if I have a different form of ID. Although I have an out of state drivers license, it is completely valid and every restaurant/bar/club I've ever been to it has been verified whether it be a scanner, a light, etc. I have never had any issues. I explained that to her, and I told her "they scan me at quiktrip daily!" With how angry, nasty, and unprofessional her attitude was, I thought she could use a lighthearted joke. She immediately snapped back, "WELL THIS ISN'T QUIKTRIP!!!" and smiled the most evil smile ever lol. She verified my ID with her manager but still came back and told me she wasn't "comfortable" serving me because of my ID (although management verified). At that point I didn't even want to drink at this establishment anyhow because being served by someone with anger issues and no customer service skills just isn't the most fun time (go figure). I was chalking it up to her maybe just having a bad day, but after telling my peers about this terrible experience, turns out she's always unfriendly! This is a review for only Friday/Saturday nights. I have only lived in this city for a couple months but it didn't take long for me to find the Pumphouse. To be honest, I like this place but I cannot figure out why this is one the more popular spots compared to the tons of other bars around the area (although I haven't visited all of them). Inside you'll notice a lot of younger people (mid 20's) and it's a pretty even ratio between men and women. There's a couple bars inside and it never takes me too long to get a drink. In the corner there's a dance floor type area where most people start dancing as the night progresses and the drinking commences. The sound system sounds good inside, but what really surprised me was the quality of the sound and stage outside. Unfortunately, I've noticed not many people go there to see the bands as it tends to be more empty outside compared to the inside... at least the nights I've been there. Bottom line - If you want to go out with some friends, single or not but can't decide, this is the spot. It has a bit of everything really. A DJ, dance floor, band, outside seating, drinks, good sized crowd, and they even sell pizza on the way out when it's closing time (which I think is an amazing idea). So glad we found the Pumphouse It was seriously the best fried zucchini i have ever had. I got the grilled cheese. Sounds simple but it was so delicious. They used three cheese. One being smoked gouda. My husband got the philly cheesesteak. He lived in philly so if he thought it was good it was good. We will be eating here again next trip. read more

Ordered nachos - the chips were thin and tasteless and the queso was quite lacking. Grilled cheese was pretty bad, could only taste the unmelted slice of american cheese. 1 star for the service. It took forever for our waiter to take our order. I would have ordered more beers but she never came to check on us. So I remember when this place used to be a full service gas station and repair shop as I normally stay at the Courtyard Marriott across the street. The next year I return they converted the repair shop into a bar & grill with a gas station and convenience store. The next year the convenience store was gone and it was just credit card pay-at-the pumps. The next year after that, the pumps were gone and this place was a full on restaurant. Why would anyone want to pay to get in to a bar where you have to wait for 10 minutes before getting a bartender's attention for a drink? I will say that once you do get service, the drinks are tasty - for a higher price. Also, the scene is super trendy...if you're into 'cliques', then this spot is for you. I would rather go somewhere smaller with a little more personality. I don't foresee ever meeting anyone genuinely NICE here. On the positive side, it's a big bar with nice outside areas and kind of a fun atmosphere. The location was recommended to us by friends who joined us for lunch. Apparently there was an event in Old Town with groups of participants drinking a lot of beer and they were the only ones being served. We waited for 45 mins before we had to track down a waitress just to get our drink order and acquire menus which she seemed irritated with us, that was the last time she talked to us before we left another 45 mins later as she gave us a snarky goodbye. It would have been understandable if we did not see groups of participants come in after us who were served and finishing their lunch as we were leaving. I would have liked to try the food which we were told is very good, but the kids we had were getting extremely restless, hungry and tired. Might try again if we see the place less packed, but if it is full, no thanks we will find an establishment with better service. read more
