SCW and I stoped into Shyan's Kitchen after a brief search on Yelp. We were pretty hungry after a flight into New Orleans and Shyan's looked great. The parking area is small but adequate and the location was easy to find. We arrived very soon after opening and were greeted warmly and chose our seats. The interior was nice and clean. Several TVs are around the restaurant and it being a Sunday when we visited one of them was tuned to the days NFL proceedings. We looked at the vegetarian menu and ordered some samosas to start. They came out quickly and were incredible. The samosas were so well flavored and spiced both of us couldn't get over how good they were. The samosas came with some spiced chickpeas that were equally delicious. A little hint of smoke, quality spices, really really good. SCW ordered the Channa Masala, and I ordered the Aloo Mutter. Along with some bullet naan and basmati rice. Oh my, the dishes were absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the spices (not hot) which added so much complexity and flavor to the dishes. I could not stop with the "mmm this is so good" while enjoying the meal. I found such a good balance of flavors in the Aloo Mutter, it really was incredible. I highly recommend both dishes. The service was incredibly kind, attentive but not overwhelming you. I really enjoyed the dining experience here and would easily return if in the area again. Give Shyan's Kitchen a try.

Garlic Naan

My second time at Shyan. The first time the food was great and I couldn't wait to go back. I ordered the spinach paneer and chicken masala. This time I orders the same thing and the recipe must've changed! The food was spicier (good if you like that). My Spinach paneer tasted like the cloves soaked in it too long and the chicken was dry. They did give us a lot of rice which i appreciate The worst was the garlic naan which was hard and burnt. So disappointing. Looks like I'll have to find a new place

Very good, no frills Indian/Pakistani casual restaurant w an extensive menu and substantial portions @ reasonable prices. The service was great and we did not have to wait long for our food to arrive. This was a very positive experience.

Goat biryani. Plenty of meat to eat!
Mina H.

Every item I tried at this restaurant was fantastic last night! I gave the goat biryani a bad review before, but I think it was a fluke last time. This time, the rice itself was well seasoned and VERY flavorful. I loved the taste of the tamarinds that were in there! The meat was tender, delicious, and plentiful as well. Not too many of the pieces were bony (some bones are unavoidable with dishes involving goat, that's the norm, if you're not familiar). After my poor experience with this dish, the owner kindly reached out to me to give this place another chance, and I am SO glad I did! The goat biryani was amazing this time around!! My boyfriend from Nepal even commented on how great it was! I will definitely be coming back to check on the consistency of its cooking. I hope it's this wonderful next time too! I also ordered a pakora, which was seasoned and fried to perfection. (It comes with a creamy reita sauce, but I like to dip it in regular yogurt!) Great appetizer. Lastly, the chicken tikka masala I ordered was exquisite! The chicken was soft and abundant, and the sauce for it was spectacular! The naan (or rice if you prefer) was buttery, and as large as a big dinner plate - just as thick too! Zero complaints at all this time around! It seems like the owner really cares about the quality of food he serves at his restaurant, and that matters to me a lot. This makes me think my previous experience really was just a bad fluke. In fact, I thought the food was so excellent this time around, I recommended Shyan's Kitchen to a friend today!

Always great food and friendly service at Shyan's! Recently my go-to dish has been the Briyani (sort of like a South Asian jambalaya if you are not familiar with it). Love the breads too- especially the stuffed paratha.

The food was so yummy. I ordered Shrimp Tikka Masala and it was so good I ACTUALLY BROUGHT THE LEFTOVERS HOME! Their was so much rich curry flavors without the bite (I asked for it to be mild), I also ordered the ginger Naan which I also brought home. I the woman who always feeds her dogs her leftovers ATE my leftovers the next day. I did add a couple of pieces of shrimp to it because there wasn't enough shrimp but there was plenty of sauce. This restaurant is more Pakistani and serves halal meat (a had it available - I'm not sure which) so there is no alcohol not even beer.

Mutton Karahi (Goat Curry)

The Goat Curry is one of the best in the city, the meat was super tender and the curry had good spice; our curries were also more meat heavy than other places we've had in NOLA/downtown. Service was great -- guy working the front / waiter was very nice and attentive. Restaurant was small and homey. Would recommend.

Wonderful food served by a cheerful staff. It is properly spicy, as food from south Asia should be.

Order taken quickly at the counter: gyro wrap w/side of yellow rice, an order of Dolmas (8) and a soda. With tax & tip $34.88. Sat at a booth type table for comfort, only to discover we had to tip toe around the messy floor and I kicked away a ball of something rather than squish it. Husband said wrap was tasty but didn't remember they use a wrap instead of a pita for the gyro sandwich. (I had the gyro on our last visit.) Rice was good. My dolmas, however, were gross. I don't dip them in tzatziki, I typically like the taste. However, today the rice inside them was very, very gooey, as if they sat over the holiday. I ate 2.5 and threw the rest out. Someone came out to ask how things were but apparently didn't notice they were standing on rice. I didn't say anything about the dolmas, because by this time they were in the trash. Took home the remaining portion of the gyro, rice & tzatziki. Asked for a to go box, then asked again for lids for the sauce. Both times I interrupted someone playing on their phone, and the rest of the staff was hanging out talking behind the counter. Really wished they had taken the time to check the dining area.

We all started with cocktails, I had a version of a dirty martini that featured vermouth which gave it a lighter and almost sweet flavor that is not the briny flavor of the typical dirty martini. I enjoyed it but I only had one. We ordered so many different things but the standouts include the tomato & mango salad, the oyster bed roast, the tandoori squash and my entree the pork vindaloo. It was sooo delicious and I was grateful to have leftovers because everyone else at the table order the softshell crab entree. That bothered me only a little because it was way too much food but also, it's a pet peeve of mine when people order the same thing- why not try/share everything on the menu ‍ Anyway, the service was excellent and so attentive. I was also treated a large slice of chocolate cake as a birthday treat. I was so stuffed but I managed a couple bites and shared with everyone. This has to be one of the best Indian restaurants in the country. As a person who has tried lots of Indian restaurants, this place stands out above all. The service is impeccable. I wouldn't expect anything less given the quality and the taste of the food coming out of that kitchen. Our servers were very proper, very respectful, very courteous, and you could tell they were very proud of the food they were serving. The space is very well decorated, not a giant restaurant. If you don't already know who they are, you honestly don't expect what you're about to taste, and you're in for a ride. Every plate had something special to it. I didn't think I could fall in love again with lamb chops, but they proved me wrong. Reminded me of the first time I ever bit a GOOD lamb chop. I didn't think I would be impressed by (seemingly) fried chicken bits, but you too won't understand why they're so good when you bite into them. Fried cauliflower, AMAZING. The food was excellent and felt authentic from start to finish. The cocktail program was also top-tier and far better than what I've experienced at most Indian restaurants. That said, there are a few areas where I think the experience could improve. My girlfriend was trying Indian food for the first time, and we would have appreciated a bit more guidance from our server regarding the menu and spice levels, especially since she's sensitive to spice. A little direction would go a long way for first-time guests. I also noticed several walk-in parties turned away between 9:20 and 9:40 PM despite the restaurant closing at 10:00 PM. As someone who previously worked in the service industry, I understand that everyone wants to get home at the end of the night. Still, as a customer, I'd be disappointed to arrive during posted business hours and be turned away. Lastly, I felt the dessert program was a missed opportunity. The food and cocktails set such a high bar that a more robust dessert menu could really elevate the overall experience. On a positive note, I have to give a special shoutout to Satya, who was bartending and helping on the floor during our visit. He was attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely enhanced our experience. Hospitality is hard to teach, and he absolutely nailed it. We'd gladly come back just to see him again.
