My dog LOVES Pups n Purrz! It's this pet shop on the Main Street of Benicia (by Avant Garden). We haven't gone in some time. Maybe over a year? But he hasn't forgotten it. He immediately pulled hard to go into the store. They have a great treat bar selection that I haven't found in chain stores. That's what I usually go for. The owner is so sweet. She always gives my dog some dried beef lung from the bar and makes friendly conversation. Yesterday I went to see if they have any birthday related treats. They sure did! At first I was about to go with a cake mix box. But then I saw they had pre-made pup cakes and happy birthday cookies. Being lazy I went for the pup cake and cookie. I didn't even make it home before my dog rummaged through the bag and snatched out a turkey neck to snack on right in the car! Pups and Purrz will remain one of my go to stops whenever I'm in Benicia. read more

Spent the day in Benicia and was happy to go to Pups n Purrz to see they had something in stock to outfit my new rescue Bear. He's a very small senior Chihuahua at 4#s. I was able to find 2 harnesses, a raincoat and a bag of treats. The owner was extremely pleasant and helpful. read more

I was excited to see this store but was disappointed. It seemed very empty. I thought are they going out of buisness. From pictures I thought it seemed Like they had tons of stuff. Wanting to support local business but when customer service isn't great at the establishment, it makes you not want to return. There is a great selection of items for pets like harnesses, leashes, dog bones and clothing. We were able to pick out some bones for our dog and when we went to purchase, I'm assuming it was the owner at the register, started to chat with some regular customers who came in to trick or treat. Rather than quickly stop the conversation and wrap up our transaction, she kept chatting. While waiting for the receipt, I said thank you and it went unacknowledged so just ended up walking out without one. Maybe willing to try again in a couple months. read more

A TREAT FOR THOSE OF US OWNED BY PETS The furries in my home get lots of treats. After learning about the Cat Circus in Las Vegas, my husband started making the cats perform for their treats. Our 3 cats quickly learned that if they sit, lay down, and roll over, they are handsomely rewarded with little nibblers. Purrz had all sorts of great treats for your pets. They also had cute little outfits. Our girls like to play dress-up. Purrz has A's and Raider gear! The size didn't match for our cats (pretty sure it's meant for dogs anyhow) but it was adorable! Loved all the great stuff we saw - even vegetarian food (for dogs)! One of our cats is a big fan of broccoli, but she's not ready for a vegetarian diet... she's a big fan of hummingbirds too! read more

We had a bad experience today at another pet boutique shop, so I found this shop on yelp. I called and the worker name Karen answered, and helped me out and sounded very nice and friendly. My husband and I showed up a few min later w our pup to try on some harnesses. I discovered this dog store while walking down first street during the farmers market. I went in to see what dog food they have available. The gentleman who helped me last year gave me tons of samples to try out which ones my dog would like. I bought it and have been purchasing from them ever since. Their customer service is fantastic and they are very knowledgeable. They do run out fast of certain brands so I would always call ahead of time and they will put your item on hold. read more

Very CUTE little shop for dogs, cats and maybe even birds! All sorts of fun toys, collars, harnesses, leashes and life vests. You can also get some good quality foods here (I noticed Canidae and Evo). You can also buy pupcakes (with or without frosting) and other yummy dog treats from the display case. Chloe thoroughly enjoyed her banana cupcake. Last i checked the shop is closed at 6pm on weekedays and all day Wednesday. read more

Pups and Purrz is Benicia's independently owned Pet Store located on First Street. They have excellent products and food lines for cats and dogs. The owner, Bill and his pup, Brindle are awesome. Bill is knowledgeable, friendly, and professional and provides a level of service most bigger pet stores don't provide. In changing my pup's food, Bill provided me several samples to try before I made the switch, which was very helpful in determining which brand I wanted, and which flavor "Rookie" wanted. The store has a line of unique collars and leashes that I have not seen elsewhere and they are reasonably priced, as are most items. Brindle is a great pup who welcomes customers, and loves to play with Rookie (which is an added bonus when we shop). read more

We moved right around the corner from here recently and they didnt carry the brand of dog food I feed my dog with serious allergy issues. The owner ordered it for me and has even shown me a few things they carry in their treat section that work with his issues. The people who work here are so informative and genuinely care about the things they sell. The owner was there and even though it was almost closing time, he let us wander the store and answered our questions about local, trustworthy pet sitters and groomers. Hmmm, what can I say about Pups 'N' Purrz? Location & hours: On the east (I think) side of First St., same block as First Street Cafe. Open 7 (yes, SEVEN) days a week which is great for us; our work schedules sometimes mean that Sunday is the only day we can run errands. Store is currently open 10:30am - 6:30pm Mon. thru Sat. and 11:00am - 4:00pm Sun. Store: This little shop sells high quality foods & treats/toys/clothing :) for dogs & cats. This is the ONLY store we've been able to find in Solano County that carries Orijen, which is what we feed our (1 medium & 1 large) dogs, and owner is very accommodating in terms of reserving a bag for us when needed. The merchandise isn't cheaply priced, but I wouldn't say it's the most expensive either, and the merchandise itself is very high quality - this is not the cheap junk you'll find at some of the bigger pet chains. It's also cleaner than my house :( - neatly organized and shining all the time. There is even a tiny, adorable "shop dog" named Molly. Owner/proprietor: James, a charming gentleman, very knowledgeable about products, easily answers any questions and/or can find out any info needed. Obviously loves dogs (Molly has him wrapped around her little claw). My dog won't walk by the store without stopping in to visit and get his pets and cuddles. James is always at the ready with a funny anecdote. Carries the 28-lb (that feels like 50-lb sometimes) bag of dogfood out to your car for you if needed. I have been going to this store for years. The New Management was a breath of fresh air! James now focuses his efforts on being all inclusive. ie, he has built up his cat inventory. And added some items for birds. When you walk in the store, he immediately sets aside whatever he was doing and he makes it obvious that you that have his complete attention. He loves when people ask cat/dog-food related questions - he's clearly in his element. I'm lucky in that I live one block over. Stop in every Saturday to get treats for my dogs during our walk. The owner and his companion pooch are very nice and very helpful. I buy alot of my dog products on-line, because of the convenience and the price, when I told him where I shop he told me he would match their prices........next large purchase of premium dog food will be from him.....I want to support local businesses so I'll start getting my food from him also (has a nice variety of premium food and is very generous with the samples!) If I dressed my dog in little outfits I would get there, they have lots of cute little things.....I did get awesome rain coats a couple of years ago when it still rained in California! This is the first time I have written a 5 star review and this is why. First off this store has awesome customer service and the price on treats and dog food is more than fair. The owner never pressures to sell and really has the dogs best interest in hand. He says he can beat petco, prices on most dog foods which is amazing that a small neighborhood store can do that. A few days ago I stopped by and talked to him about my dog scratching and possibly having a bad response to his safeway dog food. He gave me tons of sample bags for free to try. I was willing to pay $1 pet bag just to sample lol. I feel blessed to have this neighborhood store around and located on a beautiful walking area in downtown benicia. I discovered this store via the internet. I was looking for a store that sold premium dog food that was located near my brothers home in American Canyon. He is a new dog owner and I wanted to direct him to a store that carried top quality dog food. I live in South Carolina, and am not familiar with the Northern Calif. area. James Long (owner) seems very knowledgeable on canine nutrition, and his website tell the whole story. My brother was impressed with the store offerings and I am impressed that he was willing to work with me on helping my brother during a long distance call (from South Carolina). I call that great customer service. Since I am long distance, I can not visit the store, but I know my brother will be a future customer.
