I love this pet store! This is where we bought our beloved Gary, the (leopard) Gecko along with all the supplies for his cage. All the geckos here are fat and happy looking unlike the malnourished ones you see at big chain stores. We used to come here every few days to get crickets but sadly we moved to the other side of town so we rarely get a chance to stop by. You can tell they take great care of the animals in their care. My girls and I stopped by on a fact finding mission about bearded dragons. The owners were amazing! What drew me into the shop was the knowledge that they were trying to facilitate the re-homing of an old beardie for free which shows their commitment to animals in general. They were patient and answered all of our questions as we have never owned a bearded dragon before (knowing that we wouldn't be making a purchase that day). They let my girls and I hold a beautiful baby dragon named Mojave. They even showed my girls cool things throughout the store and let them feed some lettuce the to a few birds. After my little ladies show that they can be responsible for their tasks over the next week or so, we will be back to get a bearded dragon and the whole set up. Their prices seemed very reasonable. We may be back sooner because even thought it was only a few min, we got a little attached to Mojave. Highly recommend! read more

Following a recommendation from a friend, we tried this pet shop after having a very bad experience at a well known shop in Berkeley that I will never enter again. My 3 children and I had a lovely time. So much to see. Owners were open to questions and were a wealth of knowledge (we are a new jumping spider family). The kids were able to interact with some lovely birds and we came home with spider food and a Hornworm ornament. It has become our favorite ornament this year. The kids check its growth daily and compare it to the clear growth chart we were given. The place was clean, the prices were reasonable and the owners were lovely. This is my favorite pet shop ever!! Staff is super knowledgeable and helpful. I come here to get food for my lizards. I've also bought one lizard from here. I love their selection of pets and food options. Prices are great and reasonable. I prefer to come here than to go to a big chain store like petco, or pet smart as you get better service and better products. Please shop here if you get the chance! While you're here, you can also check out all of their cute pets in stock. My favorite ones to always look at is their reptiles. Foods I get here for my lizards include: pinkies, meal worms, crickets, dubia roaches and blue Goliath hornworms. I've been visiting here/going to this pet shop for about 5-6 years and today was one of the saddest days of visiting. It didn't feel as loving as usual and I think what really set the mood was this one beautiful parrot at the entrance with literally no toys chipping at the paint on the bars of his cage for stimulation it seems. Confused because most of the other bird cages had toys...I mentioned it to the owner who brushed it off and said "It's fine." When I brought it to his attention has a hazard. Didn't push farther because I could tell he didn't really care. Went recently though and the customer service with this one woman was lovely and she has a lot of care for the birds you can tell. My daughter and I stopped in today to check out the store since we've never been. The woman that was at the front desk was so amazing and sweet. She let us hold a bird named cheese and he was just darling and so gentle. She was very informative on the questions we had and was gracious in answering them. She let my fearful daughter touch and pet the bird and get a little comfortable with him. Highly recommend this friendly establishment. Would give a zero if I could. I was absolutely disgusted walking in here. If you are knowledgeable about animals, this was sickening to see. Guinea pigs in TUBS, out of water, no hides or toys.... Hamsters being kept together labeled improperly, and being kept in cages the size of CARRIERS. The wheels provided were dangerously small, they can't even fit on them which causes detrimental damage to their spines. All of them were bar climbing- MAJOR sign of stress and neurological issues. They had an open exersize ball on top of the chinchilla cage, which was horrifying. NOTHING should be put in a ball. It's incredibly stress i ducking and dangerous. They run in them because they can't do anything else!! Not to mention plastic can and will kill chinchillas if chewed and ingested (which the ONE plastic hide was chewed up!) It's so disturbing to see such poor welfare being given to these small pets. Reptiles were all given pretty good setups for a pet shop. Why are these small animals being looked over and neglected?? And the question begs, WHERE are these animals being sourced? Back yard breeding? Breeding mills? No ethical breeder would supply a pet store. This store was honestly worse than any petco, petsmart, chain pet store. Do better. If you're an indoor dent pet shop owner, at least know a LITTLE about the animals you're selling and don't just guess Horrible. read more

Wow, where to begin? Is what I think when I sit down to write this. I saw this place pop up on google as Tropical and Saltwater Fish and thought it was a new fish store. It was not, upon arriving I noticed that it was called The Pet Shoppe. Looks like it has been around a long time. Upon going inside I noticed they have several not for sale birds, including one which was very stressed and not happy. The place was busy and kids kept poking and prodding around the bird's cage. They had a pair of baby Iguana's whom looked like they have not been fed, they also had a rabbit in a container which looked good, but was cowering in the corner. I don't know much about these animals...I came for the fish....I know fish! Well, upon moving to the back of the store I see yellow caution tape and a long line of broken aquariums that looked like someone kicked the front of them.....But they have another row of tanks a aisle over, they also have one tank labeled "Big Fish" without any species or anything marked. It had oscars, red tail catfish, etc. This tank actually didn't look too bad so I thought there may be hope...! Then I get to the smaller tanks which are sprinkled in among several drained empty broken tanks again..I think most of their fish tanks were broken. Guppies! Have ich...BAD ich. Platys! Fins tucked, ICH and dead fish! At this point I decide to walk out of the store, never saw an employee no one was behind the counter. Will never visit again, had a atmosphere of a puppy mill with animals that definitely do not look like they are well taken care of while in the care of the shop. First time I have walked out of a place in pure disgust before looking at everything. read more

We were looking for a local small business petshop in the area to support during this pandemic to bring home a new family pet. We had come across this business on yelp and was sceptical about the reviews. However, we found their Facebook and seen it was under new ownership. The pictures on Yelp is not how it is anymore. It's a very clean facility and the employees are very nice. We adopted a Pastel Arroyo ball python and the owner of the shop seemed very knowledgeable and helped us out greatly. I came into this shop on a friday and purchased a 700$ bird. the woman spent 30 minutes trying to sell it to me and convince to get it. i ended up getting it. they have a 48 hour return policy, the bird got home and wasn't eating drinking chirping nothing just sleeping. i called sunday before the 48 hours they were closed i tried again today monday. the woman was extremely rude. offered me 50% of my 700$ back for selling me a sick bird. she hung up in my face and was extremely unprofessional. now i'm out of 700$ i feel like i got scammed. i do not reccomend this shop. none of the animals cages are clean and it was a rancid smell. i had high hopes and am extremely disappointed. read more

Had a great experience shopping at The Pet Shoppe this past weekend. My son brought home a leopard gecko and we needed some supplies. Instead of going to Petco, I decided to try our local shop first. Being a small business owner myself, I know how important it is to give small business much needed patronage. The store was well organized and clean. And Terence was very helpful in selecting the right items. I also had the pleasure of meeting the new store owner, Dale, who was very personable and shared his vision of turning the store into a premier reptile venue. I love coming in here, they are so friendly and knowledgeable and more importantly Erin is so nice to my daughter (I really hope I'm spelling her name right, if not, she has brown hair, usually in a ponytail, looks like Jennifer Garner maybe crossed with Angelina Jolie?) Anyway it's usually the highlight of my week coming in here, by the way she also sells really cool cup decorative plants and I finally bought one lol. Everyone who works here is friendly helpful and knowledgeable and the new owner is really nice and helpful, he even knows me by name albeit because Erin told him but that still counts for a lot considering he remembered. I'm in retail sales and one of the hardest things for me is remembering people's names, even people I really like so the fact that they remember my name and treat me so well means a lot to me, it's not like I'm a big spender or anything I just buy crickets and mice for my reptiles but when I go in there I feel like I'm family. Long story short I don't have much in the way of real family foster care blah blah blah so for me when people give me VIP treatment like this that they deserve all the success in the world. And they treat my daughter like she's a VIP too, they let her hold animals they know who she's not going to buy, they answer her questions and treat her like a person and not like an annoying child. I can't imagine why somebody would write anything less than a five-star review about this place but my best guess would be as a patron of 20 years nearly that anybody who has something bad to say about this place had an unrealistic expectation and was probably trying to get over on them so posted something bad out of frustration because they had an unreasonable demand or expectation. Sorry I realized this has become a novel but considering how long I've been shopping here it's been long overdue that I write a review and I feel guilty that I haven't done so sooner. I have literally shopped at every pet store from the East Bay vivarium in Berkeley, Hoffman's reptiles in Concord, Powell Brothers in Vallejo and the pet shop is without a doubt the best place to shop if you want amazing customer service, reasonable prices, and a great selection, everything they sell is chosen with care, they may not have the biggest selection but that's because they don't sell crap there, when you buy something there you know you're getting something good, don't waste any time, go to the pet shop you will not regret it! read more

I used to work in a small pet shop back in the day. I know how hard it is to keep everything pretty and clean, but this place could really use some TLC, updating, and a good scrub. The young staff is quirky nice and helpful when asked and the owner is usually around in the back somewhere to help answer anything they don't know. I will say I bought fiancé and my Guinea pig "sons" here because it was the first place to have young Guinea pigs for sale anywhere! My piggies have been happy and healthy so far (I've had them 3 month) so no complaints there. As far as the small fuzzy animals go, they as in wire cages which is pretty bad for their feet. The rabbits are in a safe display pen though. The birds and reptiles seem well taken care of. Their food and supplies options are somewhat limited so I suggest calling if you are looking for something specific. I'd be at 2 stars just for "meh" factor, if it were not the BEST place to get live feeder mice and rats for my snake near by. For this I will be forever grateful that I do not have to buy at Petco prices. Vallejo Petco even stopped selling rats all together so my snakes would not be nearly as easily fed without this joint. Disclaimer: Before you go educating me about feeding live to my snakes, I'll have you know I stun. If you area about to jump down my throat about cruelty to the mouse/rat or other reptile husbandry hating comment, do your research and remember the circle of life. Peace. Make love not war. Do not purchase kittens from here! Animals are malnourished, perhaps they were obtained from a cat mill or just feral cats. My kitten died after six days and 1500+ in vet bills. The kitten was 8 weeks old and weighted approx. 1 pound. My pleco died after four days, they replaced the fish. There were several dead fish in tanks and all tanks were dirty. I am under the impression that the current owner just acquired the business in 2005 or early 2006 by what he said to me. He repeats past merits business history. Unfortunately, it is how you run your business now, not how someone else ran it before. I only purchased from this company with the impression that I was purchasing from the original owner of 35 years of past reputable service. I will never purchase from them and recommend to only adopt cats from rescue groups or reputable breeders. For fish I go to petco in vallejo. They actually have a good manager taking care of the quality of fish. Few dead fish which is normal and tanks are fairly clean at Petco. read more

I prefer to shop local and support businesses in my City. This is not always easy, except in the case of the The Pet Shoppe. They offer all the wares that Petco and the other big chain pet places offer, except they go the extra mile to insure that you are informed before you make a purchase. As an example, my pug was allergic to the food he was eating, his skin was moist and clammy and he always smelled, shall we say like feet, cheetos and hot ass. The owners told me it was the food and the additives in the food that I was feeding him. I bought a better quality of food (with no fillers) and medicated shampooed the little so-and-so and voila, no more smell. My pug is happy, my home is happy, my guests are happy, I am happy. Went to this place a few days ago. Late to open, never a good sign. The shop was over crowded with very little space to walk and smelled of piss and rotten milk. After a while with walking around the shop you will eventually noticed the rat dropping in certain areas of the store. Stopped by today to look at Tropical Fish! First off when I opened the door the Smell was Horrible! Went to back of Store to look at fish! Half the tanks were empty and not working.
