My dog threatened to run away if I didn't go kayaking with him, so I ended up renting a kayak with Pure Watersports. No reservations were made and it took around 10 minutes for us to sign up, grab our gear, head to the launching dock, and start kayaking. An incredibly simple process! It was around $35 for an hour of the tandem kayak. My party ended up taking a loop around a little island and called it when our shoulders started screaming from the pain of rowing. It's a great spot for those who are fairly new to kayaking, just be mindful of the other boats, paddleboarders, and fishing wires. Definitely a place I would go back to again. Very disappointing experience renting a jet ski. From the moment I arrived, the staff were confrontational and rude. Instead of providing helpful guidance, they seemed more interested in arguing and raising their voices. The customer service was shockingly poor -- it felt like they were looking for reasons to be difficult rather than supportive. To make matters worse, around 40 minutes was taken up by paperwork and watching an instructional video and they make sure that time is deducted from the time you paid. That should not be counted as part of the actual service time, but it was. Simply they do everything to make sure you ride shorter time ( realistically 30 min). Overall, expect poor treatment, a lack of professionalism, and an experience that doesn't reflect what you paid for. I do not recommend this place. read more

This place knows customer service 110% all around!!!! I was kicking the idea of getting a kayak to do some fishing off of and I was really looking at the Hobbie line. I called and spoke with Giovanna and had a great conversation with her over the phone. I went down that weekend to try out the kayak out in the water to see how stable it was and how it operated. I took out the Pro Angler 14 360 drive and it was an amazing boat out in the harbor. Got back and looked at a few different options that they had in stock. It took me about a month to finally pull the trigger on it and Giovanna was always so great on answering all of my random off the wall questions. My first jet ski experience was incredible and marks the beginning of my summer! I've been to Dana Point for water activities and my group settled on this company to ride. The process was simple and easy to follow but requires a lot of documentation and a 7-8-minute video showing the safety guidelines of the jet ski is presented before anything. Our jet ski was a little run down, as the seats were ripped, and the guy said the startup was a little funny. Also, the compartment for your phone on ours didn't close very well. If we were to flip, our phone would definitely be gone. We booked for a 10:30 reservation and only had one hour. We definitely lost some time for this, but the guys on the dock were very nice! I rented a jet ski at this place and was forced to carry my phone on it in the "water resistant" compartment. The dock hand opened and closed it for me since it was tricky to open. He had to wiggle the latch a bit. When I returned the vehicle after the hour the compartment was soaked. My hat and my phone were very wet. I never opened it myself. My iPhone later stopped working. After contacting the manager Giavava, she told me that even though it was mandatory to carry your own phone with you on the vehicle they werent responsible for it. I was literally forced to walk back to my car and get it so I could rent the ski. Giavana stated that on one of the of liability disclaimer documents that I signed stated that they were not responsible for any damaged items. They could have at least provided a ziplock bag. This place is awful. Now I have to pay $1400 for a new phone and what a hassle. After looking at some of the other reviews on yelp this actually happened before. Why wouldn't they at the very least give you a waterproof bag for the phone that you have to bring on the boat. I'll update this review after we beat them in small claims court for triple damage plus punitive up to $10,000. I encourage anyone else that gets this kind of unprofessional, dishonest, unreasonable and arrogant service to stand up for yourself and write reviews and sue in small claims court. read more

Purchased a new Hobie Outback fishing kayak recently. Great service and knowlegeable staff. Storage option is very convenient. I live in Riverside so when I arrive my yak is ready near the dock for me to load my seat, pedal drive, oar and other gear I want to take for the day. At the end of my use the staff stores your yak for safe keeping. The young staff at the dock offers help if you need it. A bunch of friendly customers too. This place rocks! read more

It unfortunate to be typing this review, as I am a local who enjoys supporting small businesses but if you're considering this place, be prepared for the worst customer service imaginable, courtesy of Donovan. Our family was initially being helped by a polite young lady who, although a bit unorganized, was at least trying. She asked us to complete waivers, which my husband and I had already done. After a minor mix-up with my nephew's waiver, she apologized and had him fill it out again--no big deal. She then mentioned needing to see the card on file for potential damages. My husband didn't have it on him, so he ran to the car to retrieve it. I asked her if my nephew's card was also needed, and she confidently said no, assuming everything was under one reservation. At this point, it was clear she wasn't completely sure, and instead of confirming or double-checking, she quietly disappeared and passed the situation to Donovan. And that's when things went downhill fast. Donovan didn't introduce himself, didn't greet us, and certainly didn't offer any explanation for taking over. Instead, he barked at us to hand over our IDs and credit cards. When I pointed to the cards that were already sitting right in front of him, he didn't even acknowledge it. He rudely reminded us that he still needed to see the card on file, which I responded again that my husband was still retrieving the card from the car. Then came the kicker: With a straight face and with zero empathy, he informed us that we were now "running late" and wouldn't be getting that time back. At this point we had about six minutes before our reservation started. I answered we still have some time though? He said you still have a 10 minute training video to watch so you're late. To top it all off, he casually dropped a $1,000 damage fee bomb like it was no big deal and attaches that fee to being applicable if we come back late. I clarify we'd have to pay a thousand dollars if we're let's say 5 minutes late? He responds yep. His condescending tone and lack of basic customer service skills made an already stressful situation even worse. Donovan, if you're reading this: a little professionalism goes a long way, and it's clear that customer service is not your strong suit. Yelpers, beware. We had an reservation to do it on Saturday but got held up and couldn't go so they let us (at the last minute) change our date and time! For no extra charge. The people working there were owners and part of a family that runs this business. They are wonderful. Locally owned and gave us a wonderful experience. The jet skis were perfect. Located at Dana Point Harbor, this is a nice place to rent water sports equipment. It can be little hard to get to this place as it is inside the harbor. You can either park at the harbor for $5 or park at the free parking further away. Overall good experience to rent kayaks and pedal boards. read more

Have rented here twice...1st time was not busy late in afternoon and everything went fine for 2 single kayaks. This was about a year ago. 2nd time was a weekend daytime and **** show. Pretty annoyed at this place right now, not gonna lie. I came in right before the "midday rush" for a very basic rental (2 kayaks) and it was like talking to robots. Any questions asked were like "yes", "no", or some odd response that didn't really answer the question asked. Especially the tall blonde at the front desk. I was clearly inconveniencing them or they really hate their job. Pro tip to businesses: If you have someone's ID you should probably remind them you're still holding it and tell them to make sure and come back and get it afterward, instead of calling them when they're home 35 miles away hours later. You have my info. Just scan or photograph my ID like other places and give it back to me. I didn't even realize they still had it. She asked for it at the beginning, I then paid, filled out the paperwork carefully and had the rest of my party sign it, and turned in my form. Never realized she never even gave it back to me. Was just trying to get on the water and get back safely with no instructions. There was no equipment to turn in at the front desk when I was done kayaking, so I'm not sure what they're doing with my ID. This was not the only problem, but clearly the biggest inconvenience. I've never had any issues like this at any other rental place, like Huntington Harbor, Newport rentals, etc. Customer service was strongly lacking on my visit. read more

We decided to head down to the harbor and thought kayaking would be fun to enjoy for my birthday. We didn't have a reservation but Donovan was super helpful in getting everything set for us! He was so accommodating (even cracked a few jokes with us) and had to bring out the first aid kit because I somehow cut myself before we even got there lol... The attitude of the male workers working for the jet skis was terrible. Before we got on the jet ski, one of the workers were dangling seaweed at one of the customers, saying "what is this?? Look at all this!". I should've noticed the problem in the workers' attitude then. At first, they gave us many instructions about what to do if they were to be any trouble out on the ocean, and they spoke to us in a rough tone. Our family didn't notice any issues out on the ocean. When we came back, they told us there were many issues and charged us almost $300 extra because they said that the damaged that we caused was obvious to them. But there was around 9 jet skis that was out that day because apparently seaweed was stuck to the engine. That was more than half of the jet skis there. Then is the problem really the customers or the jet skis? Or the workers? I don't know, I left so angry. read more

Nightmare We arrived at 3pm, yes we were "late" because you're asked to arrive 30 min before you're scheduled time. However it only took 10 min to fill out the forms. We were ready to go grab our life vests and head out on the water but apparently the party on the jetski before us flipped and beached the jetski. We stood for half an hour before I asked for somewhere to sit. The manager was out for the day but was on speaker phone with the employees. She burped and asked if there were any customers present to which her employees lied and said no while we were hearing the whole conversation. An hour later and 10 degrees colder they get us to a jetski. I was asked by the employee to bring my phone just in case anything happened on the water. He/she(I couldn't tell) said they had waterproof compartments on the jetski. When the guy showed me the compartment he didn't explain I needed to put it in a smaller side compartment on the side. I couldn't see the bottom of the compartment or the compartment on the side so I threw my phone inside. There was water in the "waterproof" compartment. My phone died on the way home and ive been without a phone for three days now. No refund, no compensation. read more

This business is a scam. Very unprofessional service with 50 unnecessary rules that stress the jetski riders out, make them forget about other things like what time they need to be back, and just make it hard to have fun. These rules are also very severe with immediate minimum $1,000 fines if the jetski flips over or even if the jetski barely touches the dock. Their website shows that every rental, at least for jet skis, is 1 hour and 30 minutes, but on the long ass waivers that take forever to read, it says the rentals are only an hour. In our case, we had a 1:30 reservation. We got there early and left at 1:20, and we were under the impression that we had until 3:00. The employees did not communicate or at least remind us that we needed to back at a certain time. They claimed that we were told 2:10 was the time we were supposed to back since we left early. Out of six of us in our group, not a single one of us ever heard them say that to us. We brought it up with the managers and they refused to listen to our claim that we were not told a time to be back at the dock. They then proceeded to charge us for an extra hour because they claimed we left at 1:10 and that our last jetski did not touch the dock until 3:10. However, it takes about 10 minutes for the employees to pull in 3 jet skis, so they still could have charged us a late fee even if we showed up on time but it took us extra time to dock. We actually arrived back at the dock at 2:55, but it wasn't until 3:10 that everyone was docked, and this is time they continue to charge you. The manager was also very strict and threatened to charge me my $4,000 deposit fee that would only have been used for damages. They also made me assume liability for five other people in the group as I was the paying customer. I am 18 (adult) all my friends are 17 and 16 (minors). I didn't want to assume liability for five other people, so, prior to making the drive to Dana Point, I asked that all of my friends have their parents sign the liability waiver. Which they did. However, the people at the front desk essentially told me that those other five waivers were worthless and claimed that they were just waivers stating that we knew what the rules were and it nothing to do with assuming liability. But it's not a minor assuming liability. It's the minor's parent, because that's whose signature was on the waiver. Keep in mind that I made this reservation as a celebration for my 18th birthday. It's a nice birthday gift to have $620 down the drain and have a "less than memorable" experience, on top of unprofessional customer service. Me having to meet and dispute with the managers and people up front took a considerable amount of time, made me late for my birthday dinner, and actually in fact made me have to switch restaurants to the nearest same restaurant that was 35 minutes away. Overall this is a pretty shitty business that lacks communication and is very aggressive with their rules and the fees that go along with everything. Would not recommend to anyone. Basically the only way you can stay within the parameters of their rules is if you pay attention to their 6,000 rules and don't get stressed out by that. And if your rental is for an hour, Theoretically, you only have 20 minutes out on the water. 10 minutes to leave the harbor, 10 minutes to return back, 10 minutes to dock (depending on how many jet skis are docking, in our case, 4), and 10 minutes for everyone to get on the jet skis. They started our time as soon as we stepped foot on the dock, but we didn't leave till 10 mins later. EDIT: There are a number of falsehoods on the business owner's reply. 1) NOBODY communicated with us that we needed to be back at 2:10. I have five witnesses who all say the same thing. In fact, one of your employees on the dock said in quotes "As you guys were leaving the dock I called out that 2:10 was the time you needed to be back, but I don't think you guys were listening." This literally is proof that nobody in our group knew about 2:10 as our return time. 2) Again, it was not 1:10 when we left the dock, it was 1:20-1:25, which SHOULD be the time they start clocking us. And again, it was not 3:10 when we arrived, it was 2:55. I remember checking my phone to make sure. They're adding up and rounding up minutes so that they can charge us an extra hour. 3) The manager lady DID "threaten" to take our $4,000 deposit. When I was trying to defend my reasoning as to why I shouldn't be paying $620, she said pretty much word for word "well, you can pay the $620 or I'll just take your $4,000 deposit." That right there is taking advantage of a newly turned 18 year old and his teen friends and trying to get them to pay way more. Because she was definitely BSing. She can't legally do that. She pretty much tried to shake me down. She was a "wagging the finger" type manager who stubbornly and vehemently refuted anything I claimed. read more

We booked the jet skis for ourselves today and it was the most fun! Luka and the gals up front were very nice especially as we were unknowingly late for our appt. I was not particularly impressed by my experience with Pure Watersports. Two friends and I went to Pure Watersports on a Friday morning in off-season to paddle board. I've done it before and am a confident paddle boarder. I made my reservation the day before, and all went well there. The problem was getting the boards to the water. The employee said that we could either take the lighter boards or the heavier/sturdier boards. We would have liked to paddle in the harbor, but the employee said the launch location in the harbor is one that you need to drive to. I have a Prius and had no way of strapping everything down. We had to go in the ocean instead and used the sturdier boards. It's only about a 5 minute walk from the shop to the beach, but with three 50 pound boards, it took us a half hour to actually get to the beach. We are all in good shape, but seeing that the boards were heavy and bulky, it took two of us to carry one board down. It wasn't too wavy on the water luckily, but we were all exhausted and bruised from trying to carry the boards. When we were finished, I ran back to the shop and asked for assistance in carrying them back. One of the employees said they were understaffed, which was ridiculous because we were about the only customers actually renting that day and there were three people working. So, it took us another half an hour to get everything back. If I was a new paddle boarder, I would probably have given up and asked for my money back. They gave us no instruction and no assistance.
