A very busy, small cafe in a strip mall. Luckily it is close to my work. I got the chicken and mozzarella sandwich which came with a small salad. It was good but a bit expensive. The problem is that there isn't enough seating inside nor outside. So once you order your food, you have to eat in your car. Also if you are lucky enough to find a table, you're pretty much listening into the conversation of the people next to you because the tables are so close together. The guy next to me was talking so loud my colleague I ended up getting super annoyed. There is plenty of parking in the lot. First time stopping by (and Purple Onion location!) and I really enjoyed the quick lunch I had. Location has ample indoor and outdoor seating and outdoors is mostly shaded. I ordered the Thai Turkey sandwich which came with a side salad. I'm not sure what made the sandwich Thai other than the name but it was toasted and tasty. The salad was served directly on parchment paper on a tray - not my favorite presentation. And it was literally just greens with some shredded carrot and basic dressing. I enjoyed my sandwich and latte, and my friend enjoyed her quiche: -Sidewalk Baguette: ham, brie, basil, and olive oil on a crusty baguette - I swapped turkey for ham and loved the crusty baguette. The menu didn't mention it, but my sandwich came with a small side salad; a nice touch! -Quiche Lorraine - served with side salad Each was around $14/$15, which seems reasonable. Order at the counter, take your buzzer, then find a seat and wait for buzzer to go off. Pick up your food/drinks back at the counter. There's also a self-serve water station. They have a handful of tables inside and out, and we sat at an outdoor table in the shade. A lovely way to start the day! I don't always comment when service is so-so. We all have our bad days. But the reviews say what we experienced: the employee taking our order was apathetic. Bummer. Hope the biz owners see that and can help with some customer service training. I have been trying to find a good chorizo breakfast burrito near me and it was looking pretty bleak, but finally I've found one. Their chorizo breakfast burrito is really good. It has a lot of flavor on its own, though they do offer a tomato salsa on the side. They use pork chorizo, cage free eggs, potatoes, black beans, cheddar cheese, sriracha crema, and scallions and then they toast it! The slight crunch of the scallions in this was a delight. Seasoning is not a problem there is a perfect amount here. The service was pretty fast, they had my drink and burrito ready in about 15 minutes. I also got a coco-cold matcha latte, which is an iced matcha latte with coconut cold foam. It's very good, their matcha is good. Stir it, if you don't you will get just the earthiness in the bottom- if that's what you like then you'll love it, but if you want more balance stir the drink first. Anyways, I'm looking forward to trying more from this modern little cafe. read more

Unfortunately the 2 waters never arrived and I was not reimbursed. The Yogurt parfait was okay, but lacked sugar/honey. It was not really sweet enough. The toppings (granola, fruit, etc..) were solid. The Cabbage salad was good. I did enjoy the flavor of it and was both filling and light. The chicken unfortunately was very bland. The cappuccino here is amazing . I came here for lunch and asked for a cappuccino with the CA taco salad without meat . My friend ordered a CA taco salad with chicken . We both loved our meal . The portion size for the CA salad is big . This is an informal restaurant with seating inside and outside. The cashier was helpful in giving us an idea of the different coffee options . I honestly can't believe I haven't reviewed Purple Onion before. I've been here more times than I can count -- I love this place. Purple Onion is situated on a corner in Downtown Los Gatos, which at times can make finding street parking a little challenging, though there is public parking nearby (behind Soda Works). Something to be aware of when planning your visit. Also note that there is another location on Westminster in Los Gatos. I've made the mistake before of not making this clear to a friend I was meeting, which ended up delaying our lunch when she went to the other location. Oops. Purple Onion is not a full service restaurant. Patrons order at the counter and receive a beeper to alert them when food is ready for pick up. At high traffic times, the line to order can extend out the front door and finding a table can be challenging. But more often than not, I've been able to secure a table and order food without too much discomfort. The decor is rustic and unfussy -- with a wood-paneled counter and back wall, self-service stainless steel water and tea jugs, large old-time Los Gatos photographs lining the walls, and bistro tables outside. It's cute. Food and Drink: Purple Onion has all the food and drink you'd expect from a breakfast/lunch establishment and then some. Espresso drinks, coffee and tea, soft drinks, and some house-made lemonade, among other options. Naturally, they have a pastry case with all the yummy treats -- the chocolate croissants here are awesome (they don't skimp on the chocolate!). They usually have vegan and gluten free options too. Purple Onion serves a variety of breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and hot dogs, as well as specials. My favorite salads are the Chicken Cabbage Salad and the Superfood Ahi Salad. The Chicken Cabbage salad is enormous and filling, packed with their in house pulled chicken and veggies. The Superfood Ahi Salad isn't as large as the Chicken Cabbage Salad, but it is equally delicious, well seasoned, and fresh. I usually upgrade to a side of the veggie detox soup (think veggies swimming in a flavorful turmeric coconut milk broth) with this salad to round out the meal. My partner's go-to is the boardwalk baguette (ham, brie, and baguette). I've also gone with the breakfast burrito when I just want eggs for breakfast -- I can confirm that this is also yum. Overall, Purple Onion is absolutely a solid choice for breakfast/brunch/lunch when in Los Gatos. read more

I hate giving such a low star review but it's an honest one. I ordered an iced latte with oat milk after a long walk on the Los Gatos trail. I was excited to enjoy my first cup of coffee and grab a pastry. The croissant was good btw and they had a good assortment of other baked goods. When I received my iced latte the color was wrong, you know that feeling if you're a coffee drinker. There was a long line forming so I just decided to grab my drink and go. When I took the first sip it tasted like straight oatmilk with ice. I think the problem was there wasn't enough ice so the milk drowned out any espresso in the cup. The coffee needs work here. The service was great and I'd like to come back to try a pastry but I'll skip on the coffee. read more

Got takeout here on a Wednesday lunch. I got the Chicken Cabbage Salad and a Ham Quiche with Detox soup on the side. The Ham quiche was a little disappointing, I wish there was more ham in it. The outside of the quiche was nice and crispy so that tasted pretty good. The Detox soup was alright. It tasted like a bunch of greens just mixed together, but knowing that it was called detox made it taste healthier haha. The chicken cabbage salad was quite good and was a very big portion. My wife and I decided to go on a quick hike on the Jones trail located in Los Gatos. Afterwards, we decided to stumble in to this cafe to get a quick bite and some coffee. We've been to the Willow Glen location years back and I remembered having a good experience back then. This place was pretty busy when we walked in but was happy to see no line. The menu was pretty straight forward with breakfast items, sandwiches and salads. The lox box caught my eye as it looked delicious and light so I decided to proceed accordingly. I also ordered an iced americano to pair with it. We were able to get seating outside and it took around 10 minutes to get our order. The presentation was awesome - nice color arrangement with the assortment of smoked salmon, cucumber, capers, red onions, cream cheeses and a fresh French baguette. Let's start with the French baguette - it was warm and toasted and as fresh as you can get - the perfect vehicle for the cream cheese, salmon and the rest of the goodies. The smoked salmon was fresh - was not overly smokey and had a great bite. The toppings gave a nice freshness and crunch and the cream cheese stood out having a texture slightly creamier and closer to a whipped cream/butter feel - tasted delicious! It was a perfect combo combining everything together in a sandwich. The iced americano was satisfying as well. The coffee beans tasted high quality and their medium cup was bigger than most cafe's. We were in an out within 35-40 minutes and had a satisfying experience. We will definitely return the next time we hike on that trail! read more

Had lunch here on a Sunday afternoon, and the place was clean and spacious with neutral colors filling the room. There was also plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available, and the customer service was standard but sufficient. The cafe was pretty empty so there was hardly a wait for our food. Beware, the display case for pastries was empty an hour before closing time, but the labels looked like they were offering some tasty items earlier in the day. The classic turkey sandwich was slightly dry, but only because they packed it with meat, so the proportions were a little off. Otherwise the sandwich, along with the salad that came on the side, was made up of fresh and tasty ingredients, creating a perfectly filling meal. The breakfast croissant with bacon was freshly made and served hot, with crispy bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs mixed with melty cheese inside a yummy croissant, slightly crispy on the outside, but soft and airy inside. The drinks and pastries are good, which is why I went in today and ordered three different coffees and a pastry, requesting the pastry to be warmed up. When I went to pick up my order, all of the drinks were served in mugs, and the pastry was missing. I asked about the pastry, and they brought it out cold--and with an attitude. I asked for it to be warmed up, and a staff member (a Latino man) took it and returned in about 10 seconds. It was still cold, and he practically tossed it in front of me. I also mentioned that I had asked for my order to go, which was clearly noted on the receipt. He then poured the coffees into to-go cups with visible frustration. I told him the drinks were cold, and he claimed they had been sitting on the counter "for a while," which was untrue--I had been standing there the entire time and saw everything. I'm very disappointed. This is not how customers should be treated. It felt like they were doing me a favor rather than providing service. I won't be returning. read more

By 8:45 the place was packed inside and out and people were hanging by the door waiting for tables to open. We ordered the veggie burrito, Quiche Lorraine and a few pastries. My wife and I stopped in here on a whim, looking for a café with an open seat on a wet and windy Saturday morning. It ended up being exactly what we were looking for, and I left thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and atmosphere. I opted for one of my favorites, the breakfast croissant, and was greeted with what may be the best rendition of the breakfast classic that I can remember. The croissant itself was flaky and fresh, but what really set it apart were the amazingly creamy scrambled eggs and the tomato aioli that just brought it to the next level. I would come back here just to try the breakfast croissant again. As a lover of smoked salmon my wife couldn't resist the Lox Box, which is essentially a build-your-own Lox Baguette served with cream cheese and the usual toppings of cucumber, capers, and red onion. What really impressed me was the quantity they give you, as the plate was piled high with smoked salmon so you really feel like you are getting your money's worth. Combine the excellent food and plentiful seating with a great location in Downtown Los Gatos and you have a recipe for a five-star café that I look forward to coming back to in the near future. read more

Was recommended this place by a friend, and was throughly disappointed. The "chai latte" pictured was milk with hints of chai prosciutto flat bread was yummy just not what I thought it would be. Almond croissant was dry and hard, so we didn't finish it. We went on a Saturday around noon and it wasn't too busy but they forgot our third drink and had to go back and ask for it. Oh man, the chicken sandwich was bad! I had high hopes but it was pretty terrible. To the point where I'm taking it home to see if I can add something to salvage it. It had no flavor, I added extra basil and tomatoes to see if they would help and they didn't. The chicken was bone dry- I chugged a can of sparkling water after each bite to wash it down. The cashier asked if I wanted a salad or soup when I ordered and I said sure! Then he said that was an extra charge so I declined. The side salad that came with it was fresh but maybe just spritzed with oil because it had no flavor at all. The chicken sandwich said it costs 15.95 but it was a dollar more when I was charged. Way overpriced for such a terrible sandwich. The ambiance here is nice though, right in the heart of downtown with plenty of seating. We were looking for a restaurant with vegetarian options and found this relaxing little cafe. The menu selection was good (soups, sandwiches, burritos, granola, baked goods, granand yogurt, oats, quiche, salads, flatbread, etc). We ordered the breakfast burrito and the Cafe Salad. Both items were outstanding! The best part about my burrito was the toasted tortilla . Service was friendly and accommodating. Pricing was reasonable. The restroom were clean and functional. The food here generally tastes good, and is lighter in a good way, but they have a pretty serious quality control issue. We order takeout from here perhaps once a week or so, and roughly 1 out of 5 times we get home and our order is just wrong. But more severely, at least twice in the past few weeks, we've gotten bread/baguettes that were stale to an almost shocking degree: left out for a week or more kind of bread; rock hard and quite literally *shattered* in our hands. That really isn't acceptable for a restaurant, and it makes me concerned about how they handle their meat and other goods which are riskier items. read more
