My husband was at a surgical center nearby and in his sedated state asked the medical staff three times where he could get a good breakfast burrito. Purple Onion Cafe was recommended to him, so when I picked him up it was a mandatory stop before we headed home. We arrived around 9am on a Tuesday morning. I remember there being a Purple Onion Cafe in Willow Glen, which I have been to before. I remember the food being good then, so I was hopeful for a similar experience. Our dog came along with us. I was going to sit outside where there was plenty outdoor seating, but I noticed there wasn't a sign restricting pets. I took a chance and brought my dog with me, and we were told that it was ok with him sitting inside. The employee at the register was friendly about it too. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito with meat, and I got the one with veggie as I don't eat pork. I was totally satisfied with the burrito and found half of it pretty filling. Appreciated how the tortilla was grilled on the outside, which made it nicely toasted. They had a tomato salsa vinaigrette type of sauce that added a nice flavor. We also got a couple of baked goods including a crumb cake and apricot bar. Both were tasty. read more

Pleasant cafe with pleasant sandwiches made from good quality pleasant ingredients. The whole package is, you guessed it, pleasant, and maybe that's enough. Nothing really stood out but, be warned, a small soup and sandwich will cost you almost $25. No pricing is visible on the overhead menu board. I ate at the Winchester cafe (near The Garret) and discovered that The Purple Onion has a Los Gatos downtown location as well. I suspect we're getting that LG surcharge at the Winchester strip mall location. I debated between a 3 or 4 star review but landed on three due to no real desire to rush back plus the steep prices for simply serviceable food. To me this adds to three stars. We just had an outstanding lunch at Purple Onion! We split a great Chicken Mozzarella Sandwich with a Big Clan Salad that was excellent. We also had a very tasty bowl of steaming hot tomatoe soup! The Service was very helpful and supportive regarding our request to reheat the soup so it was pipping hot! Dear Owners! I have been coming to this location for over 10 years , I go to the "Breathetogether yoga studio a few doors down. The food has always been fresh and plentiful. I have to request to add or change the soup , you have has only served the tomato soup and detox soup for past 6 years??? My reason for writing this review is about the service. I feel the staff can bring out the food or least the coffees. I know you have a beeper system for clients to get up and get their food and drinks !!! And we need to clear our tables too. I saw today an elderly women with a cane and not very mobile. She ask the worker to bring food and the young girl slam the food down, didn't say have a good day and ran away , I heard the elderly women say miss and I had to ask the young girl to help the elderly woman. I only stopped here because i had a dr appt around the corner and no time to drive elsewhere ,you know south bay traffic:) Giving them 4 /5 because they are friendly and courteous and the sandwich was good. One of our least favorite spots in LG for coffee. For the price the quality just doesn't hold a candle to LG Coffee Roasters or Great Bear up the road. The ambiance and seating is fantastic, with plenty of outdoor shaded seating. The quality of the coffee and food is not up to par with the other areas nearby and price point though. read more

The Thai Turkey sandwich was cold. Cold Brie is tasteless. I had to point out that the little bit of sriracha mayo was being used to glue a slicer of Brie to the bread. They forgot the basil. They added it after I pointed it out, but you could do better and cheaper at a Subway. The side salad is sad and bagged with a meh dressing. I come here often--so much that I've even DoorDashed it, despite it being within walking distance of my house! I usually like to take photos of my food, but for some reason, I always forget. Still, I couldn't pass up the chance to write a review because I love the variety of food they offer, no matter what I'm in the mood for. Their quiches are incredible and come with a choice of soup--I'm especially a fan of the Detox soup, which I enjoy both as a side and a full serving. Their overnight oats are the best I've ever had. Even though I know the ingredients, I just can't replicate that perfect balance of flavors--it's one of my go-to items. I've also tried their salads and sandwiches, and honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My only small complaint is that I wish they opened a little earlier, but it just makes me look forward to their food even more. I waited by the counter for a long time while they were chatting with each other (clearly not work-related) and just stared at my while I stood there. No hello, or offers to help. Very off-putting. For some reason, they use the flashing vibrating device like when you're waiting in a big restaurant, although the place is tiny. It's overpriced too, $21 for a sandwich and a cookie, no drink. Just had such a great meal here! I am gluten free and dairy free, and Julie was such a sweetheart and helped me with my order. They have the best gluten free baguette, and can make GF sandwiches! Food is always good and worth the price. Very friendly staff both at the front counter and in the kitchen. I can tell these people like working here. Never too long of a wait for the quality of the food. I can always trust on purple onion on giving high quality food that tastes good, makes me feel good, and is relatively healthy compared to other food in the U.S. The restaurant is nice! I like the café feel. I wish for dining signage was more clear on how/where to put your dirty dishes. I like getting the Meatloaf sandwich and I can substitute the cheese with brie. They have espresso drinks and a nice variety of pastries and a great menu. They have gluten free pastries which I think is a huge plus for people wanting that experience. I love the environment of this place. There is only one drawback and that is that they went cashless so you can only use a card. I am not someone for cashless businesses because it deflates our American dollar and takes away our capacity to use actual currency to keep the dollar strong and available. For this I am lowering my review score. But only that reason. We have to keep currency strong in our country or we lose the freedom to govern our own money as it becomes governed by banks only. I went to the cafe to purchase a few croissants. I ordered my croissants from the most unfriendly person I've ever encountered at a restaurant counter, I don't think he even smiled. He loaded a tiny box with four giant croissants and then tried to smash them into the box by folding down the four flaps of the top of the box to close it. I had to ask him to use a bigger box so the croissants didn't get smashed!! Who buys croissants to take out and wants them smashed into a tiny box?? read more

This review is for the downtown Los Gatos Purple Onion Cafe. People seem to be confused by the Yelp listing which only shows their location on Winchester Blvd. I hope the owner sees this and fixes it soon. And he needs to stop saying that they offer a "white tablecloth standard" experience. It's just a coffee shop! The cafe on E. Main St. is a popular local hangout for breakfast, lunch or an afternoon snack. The extensive menu features a wide variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and outrageously tempting pastries. On my last visit, I had a classic turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on a fresh ciabatta roll. The turkey was good, but unfortunately the kitchen put way too much extra-hot Dijon mustard on the bread. After just one bite (yikes!) I had to scrape off the rest with a knife. Service has been erratic lately. There seems to be quite a bit of turnover (including the former long-time manager) and the amount of training and supervision the staff receives is minimal at best. Bring your patience, and don't bring cash. They only take credit cards or electronic payment. Also, if you're with other people, be sure to grab an outside table. The restaurant is extremely loud when it's busy and it's almost impossible to hold a conversation. I'll go back after a morning hike just for coffee, but I'll go elsewhere in town for lunch.
