Not as accomplished as Tonga Hut, the longest continuously operated Socal TIki bar in North Hollywood, nor iconic Tiki Ti near Silverlake, or the newer Tiki Ko in Bakersfield whose owner studied every classic Tiki bar in Socal for "authenticity", not even Ventiki in Ventura, Purple Orchid should still be given a prize for effort. I find that unless one has extra big bucks budget to properly outfit a large Tiki bar, small more inimate Tiki bars provide more Tiki authenticity since it takes less effort & money to truly create a full on, unified bar worthy to be called Tiki. Witness Toucan Lounge in Palm Springs where the space is too big and decor too limited to accomplish true Tiki look & feel. So Purple Orchid veers very close to being too big for itself without a deep pocket budget to pull off the ambiance of a tropical bar somewhere near Îles Société or Samoa. However, PO is a trouper despite a low budget rating. Tropical drinks are decent. Bar-T's are friendly although they may be rushed to make your drink to make themselves available for the next customer. Good enough Tiki Bar in the city of El Segundo meaning "second" in recognition of Standard Oil having a second oil refinery site in the area. 3+ Yelp stars. read more

Been here enough times to write several reviews, I could write a review for a few other peoples opinions as well, but I won't. What a lovely not so divey bar to get a few drinks, play some pool, and hope to get luckier then usual *wink wink. Probably the best place to do all three in el segundo or I'd say as far as hermosa beach goes, this working class bar has about the best chance and post college single man whos over 6 feet tall could get lucky at. I'm 5'8 and I have ALMOST got that chance, but with my good looks that is saying something, if you don't mind the subpar competition, and with enough bravado and confidence you COULD win that night. What really gets me is this is the closest beach bar that could be a potential winner, but none of these come close to DT Huntington Beach, with a plethora of people that have that same kind of vibe and beautiful women. I think that this small town bar is just as good as it gets :). No problem really I enjoy the beers on draft, kindest bartenders, and the easy goingness of the clientele, on a smaller scale of course. Definitely the best of the area for single dudes/especially single women. read more

When you are walking in the rain and not bar hopping, but food hopping, and you're already feeling fat and bloated, you still want to check out the Purple Orchid. AND I looooved it. It was exactly how I wanted to end my night. I had two great meals as I haven't hung out in downtown El Segundo before, so we had a great rainy walk to our last stop. This place is pretty cool I love the looooonnnnng bar and the themed cocktail drinks. Lindsey being the bartender and handling the whole bar herself, made a killer cocktail. I'm glad I wasn't hungry, since they don't serve food, but allow you to bring food from inside. I'm sure it can get pretty busy, but us LA people, with rain, it means do not go out!!! Which made it nice to be able to chat and hear each other and sit at the bar. Will be back again soon. read more

Not going to lie, I came here for the monkey lol This place plays really great alternative music!! (e.g. RHCP), the vibe is nice, the only negative thing is that is a small environment, we were lucky to get a small little table and it gets crowded but overall it is a pretty nice tiki bar. It also has pool tables and a juice box. I ordered the "Funky Monkey" and it was so delicious!!! A must order!! Plus I got to keep my cute little monkey! Super cute!! Sometimes I don't want to venture out to the eastside for a Mai Tai, and that is why I am happy this establishment exists. Located in middle of downtown El Segundo, this is great little tiki bar with tasty (and strong) drinks. My go-to is the Mai Tai! Very strong and usually one is enough for me! I have also tried the Navy Grog which is more on the sour-side, if you prefer that type of style. I didn't find it overtly dark in the bar! Street parking nearby but might be busy during peak happy hour times. read more

French 45 was served warm. Whiskey sour was not a quality cocktail, it tasted very sweet & syrupy. This is a dive bar and good for the basic stuff like rum & coke, gin & tonic. my boyfriend and i and our 2 other friends came 5 minutes before they opened saturday afternoon. 3/1/25. i met her at the door and was eager to give her more time to finish opening but she said it wasnt a problem and to keep her company. we order drinks and buy balls for the pool table. things seem to be going good but the bartender (woman who seemed to be in her late 20s to early 30s, dark long hair and bangs, glasses and tattoos) asked our female friend if she did something wrong because we didnt tip her.... tip culture has gotten out of hand (mind you we were still drinking, playing pool and was waiting for another friend to join us). i dont understand why she singled her out. 3/4 of us went to the bar to buy drinks during our stay so i feel she chose her because shes quiet in an attempt to guilt trip her. into giving you $4? and to be quite honest she wasnt welcoming at all except for her brief 15 seconds at the door. we felt some type of way about the entitlement so we left. oh well to our surprise when we got a notification from the trusty app, CASH APP! my charge was changed from $16 to $20? so you felt that entitled to my tip that you stole money from me? I will never EVER come here again. i will not support a business that serves entitlement on the rocks. or deal with a place that hires thieves. although its late, heres your tip now: do better and youll get better! read more

My first bar ever! Parking was not hard to find on this street. I don't normally drink so I asked the bartender for the sweetest thing she has on the menu. She recommended the Coconut Kiss ($8) and it was very good. It was probably more juice with a few spoons of alcohol in it. Didn't matter, I was there for the company. Which was a good thing because there was not food served at all. I never realized that bars had no food. They would allow you to order from outside and eat it inside though. They have a tiny stage on one end of the establishment for stand up comedy (or so I was told). The bathroom was small, clean and doesn't smell. Win! read more

The coolest Tiki bar west of the 405! Very relaxing, go in here on a Friday night or Sunday day and get lost looking deep into the eyes of the tiki. You'll escape into the lush wild embrace of the palms, and think you're deep in the south pacific, minus the humidity and pesky sand flies. Drinks are good and strong, check out their special drink menu for all of the crazy concoctions. You might even get a flaming Tiki Punch if you dare. One of their other specialties is the watermelon mai tai, always made with fresh juice. Only downside, like some bars they don't serve lemonade or iced tea to make an Arnold Palmer, so if you're designed order a virgin something else.. no food (besides chips) but you can ask about ordering in food and they'll suggest something. Otherwise, eat before you come here rather than chugging hard drinks on an empty stomach. Beers aren't bad either, if a little pricey... $6 for Stella. Sometimes they even have live music on the little stage, and those nights get pretty crazy, check their website/FB for info. The rest of the time, it's jukebox only but selections are pretty fair. Bartenders are friendly and quick to learn their clientele and their drinks. They also have 2 pool tables for your 8-ball needs... I wanted to leave a review for Friday February 28th 2025. Definitely do not go here. I had a horrible experience with a bartender. It sucks because it's such a popular place to go to after work, but these bartenders that they've been hiring recently have just been plain out awful and unprofessional my bartender that was rude to me was also drinking on the floor and as time went on, she was progressively just getting more aggressive, and she clearly couldn't handle her alcohol. This was somebody that was also as well older probably into her late 30s a little bit more wider set. And heavy makeup. Was extremely rude the whole entire time and had other bar goers tell her that she kept skipping me and avoiding me, and while she was making my drinks, she was slamming glasses and ice was flying in air. I called left my name and phone number and no management has still reached out to me so I'm never going there again and neither of my coworkers. The service is trash. read more

Never have I ever been 86''ed at any place of buisness. Where do I start. It took forever for my friend and I to get a drink. Luckily we were having good conversation so it wasn't a big deal. Eventually we got our drinks. Played pool. Both bartenders were at the other side of the bar (it's a long bar) so I called to the bartenders "excuse me ... can we order a drink" never did I think that, that was going to be seen as a bad thing. Usually bartenders want to serve. Bartender comes over and says you didn't have to yell. And I nicely responded with I'm sorry but last time we didn't call for someone we didn't get served for 20 mins. She said I just got here and I'm not serving you! I said okay no worries thank you. We finished our game and we asked another bartender for the tab. The bartender that didn't want to serve me gave my buddy (white guy) his bill and I took the bill from him to put zero for tip when she comes up and says you don't have to write a message. I told her I was not writing a message and she shouldn't assume I was writing a message. Seriously who assumes that?! I'm pretty sure it's because I'm a Brown woman. I have been here about 3 other times and I have never been treated like this girl treated me tonight. Even after I told her I wasn't writing a message she 86'ed me. That was the most ridiculous encounter I have ever had at a bar. The one star is for the bartenders not the establishment. A unique experience with great decorations. Puts you in a whole different state of mind once you are inside. If something was bothering you when you walked in, just start looking at the walls, ceiling, etc and start to wonder what those things are and how did they decide to hang that there and this over there. The bar has items in it as well so you'll keep your mind busy reading and relaxing. Speaking of relaxing, if you like a free pour bar, you'll like this bar. Tip well and you'll drink well. I really, really wanted to love the Purple Orchid. When I moved to El Segundo, I was jazzed to learn that there was a tiki dive bar within walking distance of home, but after trying it once I can't say that I'd go back. Aesthetically, it's right on the mark - dark, filled with vaguely Polynesian carvings, and featuring some cool neons. The mai tais, however, are thoroughly disappointing. More of a sugary syrup with hints of red dye no. 40 than any flavors remotely resembling tropical fruit. Come on, Purple Orchid! You can do better. read more

I absolutely loved the aesthetic of the space (yeah, totally sounds like an LA statement). But seriously, purple neon lights and a darker space inside with pineapple-print tables! My favorite little bar! The drinks taste fantastic and they can be strong! My favorite tiki drinks to get are the Watermelon Mai Tai, Navy Grog, and the Funky Monkey. It's a nice place to hangout, grab a few cocktails, and play a little pool. The long bar is so unique with all these pictures and post cards. Lots of tiki decor make it a very cool experience.
