Honestly, I had no idea that this bakery was a gluten free and dairy free bakery. The service at the bakery was pleasant. All of the baked goods were beautifully presented and everything looked delicious. We ended up ordering the blueberry muffin, the Andes mint chocolate cupcake, a couple no names and a morning bun. I thought all of the flavors were delicious and full of flavor. They weren't overly sweet which I like. The no names were delicious and were my favorite. Went in to get something to help get out of my major depressive disorder funk, but instead was harassed aggressively by an employee about why I deserved to wear the shirt I had on, which was related to my PTSD. Terrible dry! The worst cake I ever had in my life. I messed up my husband's birthday celebration. I wanted to have a nice gesture with him by getting him a tasty cake, but the strawberry vanilla was very disappointing and at some point I'm very sorry to say disgusting. I ordered a funfetti cake for my son's 5th birthday party. The color of the cake was wrong and the frosting was salty. It was strange. A few guests commented on it and it was extremely off-putting as many didn't finish their cake... including the birthday boy. My family and I traveled to Sacramento last Wednesday for my birthday. I googled vegan and gluten free cupcakes thinking I wouldn't find any locally. To my surprise Pushkins came up so we traveled to the Bakery. When I arrived I learned that Pushkins is a gluten free and vegan bakery! I have health issues that restricts my diet and I could have anything at their counter! I purchase the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, some sort of brownie chocolate cookie (out of this world), and a chocolate chip cookie. All were phenomenal! The whole family loved these treats. I have failed you. I have no pictures. But I have a good reason, because the wait was so long I inhaled the food and did not think once about taking a pic. We waited about an hour because my friend really wanted to go here. Now to be fair it was a Sunday so the brunch crowd was in full force but I was just trying to grab a quick bite after my workout. Anyhow I had the breakfast sandwich with an iced coffee. My friend had grapefruit juice and a quinoa salad and a brownie cookie. The service was good, attentive, affable. The restaurant was clean. My sandwich was "fine" under seasoned for my taste and the bacon was chewy, I asked for crispy bacon and the server obliged quickly. I found it basic and bland. I had an iced coffee too and found that unremarkable. But now my friend murdered her salad! She was full and delighted. She raved about the juice and moaned about the cookie. One time they charged me but didn't make my cake (it was a birthday cake I ordered one week in advance so...very disappointing) and they offered a couple of pastries as an apology which was nice. I bought a chocolate coconut cake for my grand daughter's birthday. The cake was described as having chocolate icing, so I chose pink writing. When I picked up the cake, the Icing was white, so the pink looked washed out. Still, we were excited to taste it and after she blew out her candles, we each had a slice. Everything was really dry, which is weird because gluten free bread is usually moist. I had to drink a lot of water with each bite and forced myself to finish everything. I'm a fan of several tasty delights at Pushkins despite my love of gluten, but be prepared for a wait at popular times. This small space on 29th near the new food co-op often has a line, particularly weekend mornings. You order and then pay, sometimes they take sandwich orders from the line so it is ready when you get to the front. There is a nice sized seating area outside in front, but no seating inside. The cases are usually pretty full of delightful and tasty gluten-free treats. My favorite are the smaller carrot and walnut doughnut holes, but they tend to go fast. I also like the lemon cakes and lemon poppy seed bites, but dislike the indirect names like 'awesome' and 'no-name'. The doughnuts are only available on Sundays, so plan accordingly. I don't recommend keeping the treats around, they tend to stale up with a funny texture after 24 hours. Pushkins bakery is a small gem in sac where you can get really tasty eats and treats. read more

I tried Pushkin's one random time a couple months ago, had a cookie and cupcake, can't remember the names, but they were surprisingly decent for a gluten free bakery. So since I had been dabbling in plant based foods recently, I thought it would be a good idea to try their vegan chocolate chocolate cake for my birthday this year since I was relatively happy with what I had tried before. WRONG. It was a bad idea. This vegan chocolate cake was pretty, yes, but it tasted like cat food. I mean I've never eaten cat food but that was the first thing I thought when I was chewing my first bite..."if I was a cat, this is probably what my food would taste like." The consensus all around by my friends was that it was not a good cake. Maybe I need to lower my expectations next time or I should have bought the smaller size since I didn't know if it would taste good, but a friend who missed my party bought me a vegan vanilla cake from Safeway and it tasted sooooo much better. If I give up the plant based lifestyle I would come back to eat their other bakery items since I liked those, and I do still recommend that others try this establishment. Just don't eat the vegan chocolate cake. Or if you do and hate it, don't say I didn't warn you. read more

Ordered a cake for my brother who is lactose intolerant. Got the vanilla confetti cake. Tried to order just the 6 inch but it's limited to 15 characters. Couldn't even get a "Happy Birthday (name)" on there. Frustrating. Had to go up a size to 8 in. Cake was yummy and moist. A bit of a mess as the layers didn't hold too well and slid off each other after sitting out for a while so keep it chilled. Really sweet for my taste but it's on par to the sweetness of most American cakes. -1 star: upon picking up the cake, I looked in their bakery case to see what goodies they had that morning and there was a fly just hanging out in the case. I told the worker behind the counter and her response? "Yeah. It's an everyday occurrence." What?! She goes after it with her gloved hands, chasing it through different levels of the case. Gross. If it's an everyday occurrence, it should've been solved by now. Is it that difficult to have some sort of way to close the case from flies but still be able to open it to restock and grab items for the customers? I'll be staying away from the case of goodies from now on until that's been remedied but may order a dairy free cake if needed. I was just glad the cake didn't taste like cardboard like other dairy free cakes I've had. Wish there hadn't been the fly issue so I could frequent the place! read more

But for anyone with wider choices available, there are too many better places. Had a ham-and-egg breakfast sandwich. Pushkins was on the radar as were rarely in the Sacramento area. We did show up pretty close to closing time, so a lot of options were off the board. But we were still able to grab lunch and a sweet before they closed. This is a small bakery with seating outside. Still busy up until close and everyone was very friendly. I grabbed the herbivore sandwich along with the strawberry rosemary muffin and the misses grabbed a peanut butter cupcake. The baguette on the sandwich was absolutely delicious, enough so where I thought about walking back in and asking if I can buy one solo. Somebody must've been in my head because once I had thought about that, the lady next to me went in and bought two baguettes! The sandwich was a bit messy but still very delish! The strawberry rosemary muffin was amazing! The blends of the two flavors meshed so beautifully. The peanut butter cupcake was okay at best. Would definitely come back if I was in the area, the pricing of these items are on the higher side for sure. I have been waiting to try Pushkin's for so long because being a Vegetarian they have a lot of tasty looking veggie sandwiches to try, but unfortunately I was underwhelmed. First of all, now that Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op is next door, it's impossible to find a parking spot. I circled and circled the block and finally ending up parking about three blocks away. Not very awesome when all I wanted was to run in and grab a sandwich on my lunch. I ordered the Spicy Adult Grilled Cheese with no tomato, a Mudpie Cookie and two Lemon Bars. The Spicy Adult Grilled Cheese was blah. Tons of arugula, soggy textured bread, too much pesto and no flavor. Ugh. The Mudpie Cookie was OK for being Gluten Free. If it wasn't, it would be pretty bad. The Lemon Bars were good, but it's hard to mess one up. There weren't any tables to sit at inside and a few to sit at outside uncovered by the street. Unfortunately I probably won't be back. There was another sandwich on the menu that looked good, but I don't feel like going through the trouble in finding out. read more
