Our favorite bread bakery in Sacramento! I've been coming here for years and it sure ain't fancy but it's great! The name suggests it's Italian, but it's more American than Italian. We travel to Portugal a lot and New Roma's bread is the closest to the bread we love in Portugal. Their pastries are American style-not European, but are very good. A huge bonus is everything is very reasonable--about a third less than what you'd pay elsewhere. If I lived any closer, I'd be huge! read more

Very nostalgic, the Danish are thin, perfect ratio to the cream cheese, its thinly dipped in frosting, crumbles on top and the fresh fruit filling. Outstanding! This bakery has been operating at its 1800 E Street location since 1934 and, as of May 2026, is an incredible 92 years old. It's also one of the oldest bakeries in Sacramento, known for its brick-oven baked breads and old-fashioned pastries that have kept generations of families coming back. My family and I have been visiting for years for all kinds of special occasions. Hot cross buns at Easter, soda bread for Saint Patrick's Day, specialty breads for fancy Christmas and New Year's dinners, and the softest rolls for Thanksgiving. Some of my favorite memories are stopping in after school with my grandmother for a cookie. We also love their pastries: donuts, cronuts, beignets, cinnamon rolls, and so much more. You truly can't go wrong here. Everything is fresh, delicious, and clearly made with care. The staff is always sweet, welcoming, and part of what makes this bakery feel so special. I only been there once but I haven't been there since last year because when I was there I looked down at the case and there was a giant rat the size of my forearm . Usually I'm skeptical of reviews and want to try places out for myself to give them a chance but I can never go here again the rat went down from the holes in the case ,idk if I can trust it again read more

Great baked goods and friendly staff, but the place is very run-down. The fake display cakes on the top shelves are old and dusty--a real turn-off. It needs a fresh coat of paint to be more inviting. Unfortunately, the atmosphere brings the experience down, so I'm rating it 3 stars. read more

The moment you walk in, you're hit with the most incredible smell of fresh-baked goods. Their pastries are seriously amazing--The quality of the baked goods are wonderful and you can tell a lot of care goes into every single item. (Except cupcakes they are dry.!) However, the customer service is a HUGE letdown. The old chubby lady seems annoyed and uninterested in helping you, which makes the whole experience feel rushed and uncomfortable. It's a shame because the food is a solid 10/10, but the service is a 2/10. It's a great spot for a quick stop, just don't expect a warm welcome from that old yucky i hate my life lady. I hadn't been to New Roma Bakery in many years. It looked the same from the outside, but inside was something quite different. The place was dirty and dingy. There used to be gorgeous cakes in display cases that could make you say wow and drool. Attention to details and taste were particularly grand. Now this last Friday around noon, we walked in and saw rolls, some day old bread, some donuts, and nothing that showed me much interest. However service was prompt and courteous. We bought 3 assorted items; a creamed apple roll, a mini pineapple upside down cake and a lemon coiled donut. Nothing we tasted was fresh. It tasted like two day old pastry. The apple on the roll was straight from a can with old icing atop it. Ewww. The pineapple mini cake was mushy or soggy and just lacked any cake texture. The cake was gooey in a sick ending way. We took a business card which lists the owner as Tim Costa. The fancy and classic New Romas Bakery that once was remarkably popular and a sought after Bakery is long gone. I was surprised that the company didn't include the prime staples of the old booming business. The amazing bakery that was, is from a forgotten time. New Roma bakery is one of those spots that has been around Sacramento since my childhood. It has been a while since I have stopped in for a visit and I have obviously never reviewed it before. The opportunity arose on a Saturday morning when my husband and I were downtown exploring with our dogs. We stopped into the bakery and savored all of the wonderful sites and smells. We finally settled on a maple bar and an apple fritter. The staff saw our dogs, peeking their heads out of the car window, and also threw in two plain beignets for them to nibble. Their kindness and generosity did not go unappreciated! This is just an example of a good old-fashioned classic bakery. No frills and nothing fancy but everything you order is made with love. read more

We ordered our wedding cake here and it was absolutely perfect. It was so beautifully done and delicious! We had tiers with strawberry filling, lemon filling and pineapple filling. I tried some of each and loved them all! Every one who works here is lovely and makes ordering so easy. The hardest part is choosing because everything is fantastic. We always get cakes here for family birthdays and events and wouldn't go anywhere else. Nothing is ever overly sweet, dry or artificial tasting. It's always flavorful and delicious. This is the oldest bakery in the Sacramento area, yet no one has heard of it? A friend of mine lived close to this place and we would always love to snag the different pastries and baked goods they offer. They also do cake orders and I had placed two birthday cakes that were huge hits with all my friends. This isn't a Instagram worthy frilly type of bakery, it's simple and comfy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting the fresh baked bread they offer! When you cut into it and hear that crunch your senses are fully indulged. Staff is also super sweet and in the later hours close to closing will throw extra goodies in your bag sometimes. It's not the BEST of the best but worth a trip to check it out and the bread is five out of five stars. read more

This place is clearly a step back in time. Old school without even making any excuses and no excuses are needed. Sure there are plenty of upscale artisan type bakeries not too far away. This little hidden gem has a plethora of options forms breads to cakes, cookies, donuts and pastries. I'm not a big sweets person but I do love my carbs. Loaves of bread are baked fresh daily and sliced if asked. The exception being the sourdough loaf that's too big for the slicer machine. I happened to be in the area just after 1:00 when nearly every items, if not every item is half off. I was surprised when I place my preset for about $10 worth of items and was told I owes $5. I pointed out that the Sourdough loaf alone was about that much. At the that point the friendly lady at the counter explained the items were half off. Jackpot! I ordered up another loaf and a few more items to hit my $10 goal. The breads were delicious. I even snuck in a slice on the way home. The little one loved his mink donuts and the cinnamon roll was sure tasty. When you think old school got really old. This is a post world war 2 vibe and it hits the basics at very fair prices. My son recently moved to the area and I'm certainly going to stop by aging if my timing is right. So much goodness for such a bargain. Parking isn't easy but it isn't all that hard either. Usually a figure 8 around the blocks and something will be found with a minimal walk to the goodies. The staff is friendly and the step back in time feels good. Been looking for a bakery to get some rolls for our homemade meatballs we had made. And luckily this spot was open and had some bread left. Walking in we were greeted by a lady who will for ever be rememberable. Super funny, super cool, and super protective of her coworkers. I wish I could remember her name but she says "not all things are bigger in texas like they say" (inside joke, adult humor). location is in a bit of the outskirts but deep in downtown (depending which way you come you will see) she told us so much from the area to the goods on the breads and they had so many other items that looked good. From Beignets, donuts, breads, rolls, cookies, muffins and many more. She said on weekends the bread goes fast. We went on a Sunday morning around 10am and we were able to get some rolls but only the small ones which ended up working great for the meatball sandwiches. Tried the espresso muffin top and the beignets dusted with powder sugar. Both were really good. read more

My husband introduced me to this family owned bakery. He has been coming here ever since he was little and has remained his favorite local bakery. Whenever I get a craving for some quality baked goods, I'll stop by New Roma Bakery. I love their donuts-- not too dense but still fluffy. The bread, in particular the sourdough is my favorite to get. I'm not sure if it's only on Sundays, but they have half off donuts after 1 pm. There will be a handful of people lining up for the clock to turn 1. It's a nice tradition to have. Currently, they only allow 5 customers at a time. read more

Awesome bakery! There are many sorts of pastries to choose from, and it's a decent price. The staff is really helpful and patient. Once I came in the store, they greeted me and stood patiently as I decided what I wanted to get. I got the custard filled chocolate donut. Filled Chocolate Donut- Absolutely delicious! I love a yummy custard filled donut. The donut was handmade and it tasted really fresh. The custard was creamy and really refreshing. The donut itself was really soft and chewy, and the chocolate didn't taste artificial. It wasn't too sweet, so it was perfect. Overall, I would definitely come here again! read more
