Went by Pushkin's Bakery for Mother's Day! My mom likes to try vegan treats so I figured this is the perfect spot to pick up breakfast. I was afraid it was going to be really busy and limited parking since it's in Midtown, but I ended up finding a spot pretty easily on the street. There was a bit of a crowd outside the shop and a line inside but it went by super quickly. I probably spent a total of 10 minutes visiting. It's definitely more of a takeout format. They had many options but definitely less vegan options than regular options. They were also out of a few treats, and i arrived about 30 minutes after they opened. Just something to consider! I ended up getting 4 goodies (total $16 ish). I got the blueberry lemon muffin, strawberry cobbler cupcake, cinnamon roll, and apple muffin. All of them were delish! I love that you can tell how fresh they are. Consistency was always fluffy, and the flavor was never too sweet. Perfection. My favorite has to be the apple muffin. Keep in mind, only the blue berry lemon poppy muffin was vegan from my purchase. I look forward to ordering here again and trying more treats! read more

Despite Pushkin's popularity and wealth of reviews, I'm not really sure if I could've found this place on my own...literally. Never mind the fact that the address lists 29th St - I'm not sure if I would've found the entrance without doing a lap around the building (I assumed the entrance was on the other side of the building where the Temple Coffee/the parking lot is. Honestly, I blame it on the fact that there wasn't a line out the door, which is something you just get accustomed to seeing outside just about every popular bakery in SF. Then again, I'm not exactly complaining about that either...ha! While they may not be the biggest bakery out there (anywhere, let alone in Sacramento), the full slate of what Pushkin's has to offer is surprisingly extensive. On any given day, the day's offerings will span a varied selection of their full collection of pastries and baked goodies to choose from, such as scones, coffee cakes, cookies, scones, and buns. What's more, they have a variety of sandwiches to offer as well, including both breakfast sandwiches and "lunch" sandwiches with both meat and vegan options. In all, the vast majority of items look really interesting, but what might be especially appealing is they have goodies for folks with dietary restrictions, whether you're vegan, have a gluten sensitivity, and/or have dairy allergies. -- BREAKFAST SANDWICH #2 - Mayo, Green Tangy Dressing, Egg, Ham, and Cheese...$9.99 This was terrific! The ham, egg, and cheese complemented each other perfectly and contrasted well against the dressing (which was only slightly tangy). However, I wish this had some tomato or red onion for some sweet freshness. -- MEYER LEMON COFFEE CAKE...$4.35 A little on the sweet side (there's a fair amount of icing), but this is, easily, my favorite baked item here. The coffee cake is moist and not overly dense/heavy, but what I love most is how much Meyer lemon flavor it has. -- BREAKFAST SANDWICH #1 - Mayo, Pesto, Egg, bacon, Tomato, Avocado, and Spinach...$9.99 Not quite as good as #2, but still very solid. Ironically, this had the reverse issue - while I liked the spinach and thick cuts of tomatoes, I wish there was another slice of bacon to add more meatiness to the sandwich. -- TOASTED ALMOND APPLE CAKE...$4.85 I've had mixed experiences with similar pastries elsewhere, but this one was great! The interior of the cake was a little wet (presumably from the apples), but I liked how well the almond and apple flavors worked together. -- CINNAMON BUN...$3.25 Although the bottom of the bun felt a little overcooked (very dark in color), the taste of this was pretty decent. The wealth of icing certainly helped, but I liked how the bun itself wasn't overly sweet and had a nice hit of cinnamon in it. -- MORNING BUN...$3.25 Honestly, this was very...meh. While it wasn't awful by any means, it wasn't all that interesting ether. The texture was moist, but other than the sliced almonds on top, the bun itself didn't have a strong taste of anything to me. -- NEW YORKER SANDWICH - Salami, Soppressata, Provolone, Onion, Tomato, Pepperoncini, Iceberg Lettuce, Yellow Mustard, and Oregano Vinaigrette...$10.99 The bread didn't do much for me (it fell apart quickly), but hard not to like such classic flavors. Plus, they didn't skimp on the meat, as there was a lot of soppressata and salami. I just wish the veggies didn't make the bread so soggy. One thing that I will say is that across everything I've tried, though more so with regards to the sandwiches, the portion sizes feel a little light. I get why that is the case with the pastries (comparatively small batches), but neither of the breakfast sandwiches felt all that hefty for the money. The same could be said about the New Yorker, but at least that one was packed with salami and mortadella. That said, it's not the biggest complaint, as the ingredients all tasted fresh and tasted of a better quality. While I've managed to try a number of things so far, the one thing I can't speak to are the cupcakes, muffins, or the cakes. However, from the look of them in the display case, they all look pretty appealing (I just tend to gravitate towards their other offerings). Even though Pushkin's isn't exactly in my neighborhood, I'd definitely look to come back for their Meyer Lemon Coffee Cake or one of their breakfast sandwiches, especially now that I know where they are! read more

As someone who only recently had to change to a gluten free diet, it's been hard to find gluten free alternatives for some of my favorite pastries. Pushkin's has such a wide variety, and they're the first place I've ever found that has gluten free hot cross buns. The OG of gluten-free magic! We went to Pushkin's restaurant, Sibling, that morning so had to stop by their bakery on our way out of town. And it was worth it. If I came again, I'd come as early as possible to get a better pick from the bakery items for the day! When we arrived post-lunch around noon, things were really picked over. There was a bit of a line forming but only because the space inside is teeny tiny. This is a takeout only operation - no seating available inside and a few picnic benches outside. But don't worry, the line moves fast! Heard of this place for a while now and just haven't made it here until now. After a good lunch next door, we wanted a sweet treat - gluten free. The shop is sandwiched between Sacramento Co-op and Revolutionary Wine & Kitchen, also Temple Coffee Roaster. They had so many delicious selections and all gluten free! The staff was patient with me when I was trying to decide what to get and I sounded like a kid in a candy store lol. It would be one of the few times for me to try gluten free baked goods and to my surprise, they did not disappoint. I had a crème filled sandwich cookie. OMG, it was sooooooooooooooooooo good!! Ordering is simple--view the display case and menu, place your order, and pay. The line moves fast since it's takeout only. The workers do a good job juggling the line and are prompt. Looking at the display case, it's like we hit the jackpot! Plenty of classic and specialty cupcakes, scones, cookies, and other baked goods up for grabs. I grabbed two pastries: Orange Cardamom Pound Cake and the Pumpkin Chocolate Coffee Cake. My best friend and got the Toasted Almond Apple Cake. The pound cake was superb--subtle citrus flavor, sweet icing, and a dense yet moist texture. I'd get it again! It was straight up baked flour--no apples in sight. I grabbed a chunk of the scone and it got crumbs EVERYWHERE. I pinched it between my thumb and pointer finger... It literally crumbled into dust. That's how dry it was. Cupcakes and muffins looked small and sad. A mini cupcake (like the ones you get at Walmart or target for kids birthdays) was $3. I had an appointment nearby and decided to stop by to get a sandwich for lunch plus some other goodies to go. I ordered a turkey bacon sandwich. They said they ran out of bacon. I was ok with it. The sandwich didn't taste great. The bread was very dry and hard. I've been here before and it is not usually this way. I could not eat the bread after a few bites. I just rolled the lettuce up with everything inside and ate the sandwich that way. I was totally disappointed. The baked goods were pretty good. I brought it home after work to share with my husband. He didn't like the banana cake. I usually love banana cake, but not this one. The mudpie cookie was on the hard side. I get this often. It is usually chewing and really good. It's one of my favorites. The blueberry muffin was really good. It was moist and tasty. The zucchini bread and the crinkle cookie were really good also. My husband's favorite was the crinkle cookie. I was really disappointed with the sandwich and with some of the bake goods. I spent over $40 in this place. Some of the items are on the expensive side for a small little item. In a word, WOW! Danny Turner best gluten free baguette ever! And I'm not gluten intolerant but my best friend is. She's visiting from Maine and I stopped by to get some baguettes and sandwich bags. My family and I were enjoying a meal at a nearby restaurant, when my sister mentioned that her favorite bakery was just a few doors down from us. I had never actually been inside a Pushkin's Bakery before, because my boyfriend had always placed cake orders online and by phone, then picked up the orders on the way to our designated party. Impressed! This was our first time here and we chose this bakery based on the positive Yelp reviews! We ordered a few pastries to go and most of what we chose were so tasty! I highly recommend the lemon loaf! Not too sweet of a cake generously topped with sweet icing! As well as the mud pie cookie! It tastes like a brownie...but better? It has an ooey gooey cookie in the middle and a crunchy almost meringue exterior. The mixed berry cobbler was also very good with tart berry filling and a buttery crust. I think this would've tasted even better warmed up! This place would have deserved a 5 star review had it not been for that cupcake. We got the cookies and cream one and it was just odd. The taste was off and not very sweet and the icing was too fluffy for cupcake icing with not enough flavor. The cake itself was moist and it overall was presented well but I wouldn't order it again. And based on other reviews maybe I'll refrain from ordering cupcakes here. This location is much smaller than their Roseville location. It's just a small bakery case, with a little bit of outdoor seating. I'd recommend the Roseville location over this one if you have the option. I tried the chocolate chip cookie, cinnamon roll, and no name. The no name was the best of the 3 by a wide margin for me. Delicious bread, great texture, and perfectly sweet. Highly recommend. Chocolate chip cookie could've used a lot more chocolate chips, and a lot more sugar. The texture was also crumbly. Usually a chocolate chip cookie is something I recommend gluten eaters try at gf bakeries because often they taste like the real thing. This one really missed the mark for me, it tasted healthy. The cinnamon roll was ok. Great bread texture but it was really lacking the cinnamon goo that is normally my favorite part of a cinnamon roll. Prices were very reasonable. I liked that a lot of the items were on the small side and on the cheap side compared to other gf bakeries I've been to, so you could try more things. Parking was a little tricky. Lot was crowded and spaces were small. Unfortunately I just can't give my first experience at Pushkins Sacramento a great rating when I'd only recommend or repurchase one of the three items I tried. I've had far better cookies and cinnamon rolls at other gf bakeries. The no name is unique and delicious though. I'd just get several of those if I'm ever in the area again. I contacted Jose regarding the lack of inventory of their Vegan Granola, which I wanted to purchase for a friend of mine. I told him my friend lived in the Bay Area and has ALS. Jose explained that Pushkin's was having issues with their supplier, and it could be a month or more before they would have the granola in stores. However, understanding the urgency he asked me for my contact information and told me he would do his best to get the granola for me. I've been on a temporary gluten-free dairy-free diet which is pretty challenging. So I am very thankful for Pushkin's! Such a foodie life saver to fulfil my cravings. I've already been back a few times. Their gluten-free vegan pastries, cakes, and cookies are amazing! Everything I have tried so far tasted great. My absolute favorite is the Crinkle Cookie! I want these Crinkle Cookies even if I'm not on this diet! I'd desribe them as soft brownie-ish cookie deliciousness covered in powdered sweet goodness haha. My next favs were the Banana Walnut Bread and then the Toasted Almond Apple Cake! Everything freshly baked omg so good. Morning Bun was pretty good. Chocolate Chip & Mudpie Cookies were okay. Carrot Cupcake I liked the least, I didn't love the icing. I still ate and enjoyed it all though. It's better than no sweet treats at all. You have to be careful when looking at all the yummy baked goods because you'll want to pick everything! Before you know it the total price can really add up really quickly. Pushkin's Bakery in Midtown is a cute bakery close to the 80-freeway specializing in gluten free and dairy free baked goods. Inside is a quaint room, where you are greeted with a display case of their daily pastries and can catch a glimpse of employees in the backroom busy at work. I really enjoy their Green Turkey and #3 breakfast sando, as they have a good balance of greens, protein, and the gluten-free bread. Today, I ordered the Smoked Salmon, which I feel is their take on the classic cream cheese, salmon, and bagel flavor combination. The sandwich had a little less smoked salmon than I would prefer but tasted refreshing with the cucumbers and greens. If you are visiting for the first time, I would note that there is no seating inside. Outside of the bakery, there are 3 tables with umbrellas for seating. On the weekends during busy hours, plan to take/eat your food to go. Additionally, they do not serve any drinks or coffee at the Midtown location. A classic move is to grab a coffee nearby at Temple Coffee or the Pachamana Coffee in the Co-op to enjoy with your food! When it is busy, expect to wait up to 10-15 minutes. read more

I have celiac disease, and while visiting Sacramento I decided to stop by Pushkin's Bakery to pick up sandwiches--actually, two of them. Unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. The staff working this morning were not friendly at all. When I asked questions (which is necessary for someone with dietary restrictions), I received very short answers and felt as though I was inconveniencing them. There was no effort to be helpful or reassuring. While waiting for our sandwiches, I even overheard an employee telling a paying customer that they could wait outside to receive their food, which came across as unwelcoming and dismissive. What concerned me most is that I was not informed that one of the sandwiches contained almond milk, which was different from the standard version. There was no acknowledgment or warning. As someone with celiac disease and food sensitivities, I would have expected at least a quick "just so you know" or an offer to substitute ingredients. That never happened. On top of the service issues, the sandwiches themselves were not good--the bread lacked flavor entirely. Unfortunately, I did end up getting sick after eating there. Overall, this was not a positive experience, and I would not recommend this bakery, especially for those with celiac disease or food allergies who rely on clear communication and knowledgeable staff. read more
