Our waiter seemed very rushed, and when I asked about the difference between a New York strip and a Kansas City strip, he wasn't able to provide an answer--something I would expect at a steakhouse of this caliber. A Kansas City icon! This review is odd for me because I love this place, and for me, it embodies local Kansas City in the old stockyards in the west bottoms. I have a ton of memories from this place from way back in the early eighties going here with my parents on special occasions, yeah I am old! So I am biased. I want to say that up front, but I will be as honest as I can. Let's talk about the food. The steaks are good, they're fine. They are not the best I have ever had, but they are cooked well and large. We have never had a temp issue here. They could maybe use a bit more seasoning, but that could be a personal preference and the ribeye could maybe be trimmed a bit better. I like strip steaks and they have a good one here with a bone in and it's what I would recommend. The baked potatoes are good nothing special. I recommend getting the French fries, they are always good, but on a few occasions they were the best I've ever had. The appetizers we have tried are good but we like to get the shrimp cocktail, and the wedge salad. It's one of the few places where you get a good amount of shrimp in for the money and two people can easily share it, so it's a good value. The wedge is good probably the same as you may have had other steakhouses. I like blue cheese and this one could use a bit more, but the bacon chunks make up for it a bit. The bartenders here are excellent. I have never had a drink I didn't like and the menu is good and I think priced well. I like the ox old fashioned and my wife loves the buffalo bounce. Drinks are a must! We come here somewhat regularly, 3 or 4 times a year, so we know what we like and stick to it. Our service has always been fine. I read some of the reviews about the front of house staff and I was surprised, we have never had an issue. Always pleasant and helpful, but to be honest we are pretty easy going so maybe that's part of it. I can only speak for our experience and it's been solid. I love the restaurant ambiance! I think old Pendergast KC when I am here. The whole feel of the place from the old speakers on the wall to dark restaurant interior and small table lamps in the booths. It's reminiscent of a time gone by when cattle were bought and sold right here and cowboys roamed the streets. Overall, I love this place. The history, the memories, the food, the ambiance the whole thing together. If you're from KC you gotta try it and think of what this place means to KC. Who knows, you might fall in love with it like I did or you might not and thats ok too, I can be romantic about these things. I do not usually venture to the bottoms and now I remember why - just not my scene little depressing. The restaurant is dark - little gloomy. Considering I am sitting down to some Plaza-Oceans Prime-McCormick and Schmick prices the 21 day dry aged steak needs to hit! It is a quality piece of meat- yes. No char not the style but cooked a perfect medium rare. My cut had the fat you expect but did not slice easily. Not tough but not tender. I expect a $130 ribeye to melt in my mouth and I had to do Chewing aplenty. I added tiger shrimp for $15 and they placed 2 directly on top of the beef. At $15 (3) would have been more appropriate and on a skewer on the side a prettier presentation. Everything is ala-carte so i expected shareable sides - not so much as you can see. Creamy spinach was mediocre and broccolini on the plate is not shareable. House salad was excellent the house dill ranch is spot on. I would give the meal a 6 out of 10 but just a 3 for value. This was my second time here. As was the first time, the service was impeccable. Unlike the first time, when I had the KC Strip and Steak Tartare, I opted for a less traditional order. Started with the Caesar Salad with white anchovies. This was an A. Great salad with the perfect amount of dressing. For the main courses, my wife and I decided to split a flat iron and a pasta dish. They are currently featuring a spaghetti carbonara. The steak was cooked perfectly and was very tender. Loved it, and I gave that an A. The spaghetti was a poor call. Alas, time ravages us all. The Golden Ox, sadly, has not escaped this reality. Last night I took my love there to celebrate her 60th birthday. She is a GREAT, steak lover. It was her first time to visit this icon of our youth, as well as mine. Imagine our excitement and anticipation; after all these years, we were ready for the dream to become reality. When we arrived we were informed a large party was in a private room, so service would be slower than usual. So we expected an extended stay in this warm and rustic venue...boy did we experience a longer than usual stay. We waited over two hours, had one steak arrive undercooked and the other like a brick. Add to that or baked potatoes were cold. Dog gone it! We were SOOO disappointed. Virtually ignored for two hours, cold, over and under cooked steaks, cold taters, all on my sweets 60th. The twist to the proverbial steak knife, the costs was what one would expect of a truly top quality steakhouse! A slightly off subject observation - I found it to be a testosterone heavy statement, but, the server actually suggested we come back on a Friday, because they usually do a great job on Fridays. Strange thing to admit and be proud of. This was such a poor experience that we decided to skip their dessert options. Decided to come here based off of a recommendation. I will say the ambiance is amazing! It has a dark warm cozy feel, literally took me back in time to the 1920-1930's lol. The booths are made with real leather, It's a must see, the service was a 10/10. The drinks and the food not so much, the cowboy punch and the lemon drop martini tasted nothing how it was described in the menu or by our server in my opinion 4/10. The food was meh, the steaks 3/10 we asked for medium rare and got rare. The risotto was not tasteful at all, the mash , baked potato and broccolini, crab cakes, oysters 10/10. 4 of us showed up to an over half empty restaurant for our reservations at 7:30 on a Friday night. The hostess walked us to our table directly under an air vent that was freezing. We asked to be moved to another table. The Hostess with the Mostess refused us not once but, 3 times citing she had all the tables already pre-planned for their reservations even though the tables were completely open. the last time she refused she said, and I quote, "I'm sorry you don't like my answer." Listen, the price to quality of food ratios don't match up here. Food is subpar at best. Expect poorly seasoned undersized entrees and sides. The 4 of us spent roughly $750 before tip. Our waitress was good, our drinks were good. Other than that, hard pass on ever coming back. Seriously, literally every other high end steakhouse in Kansas City is better than this one. My pop has always said this was the place that he had the best steak of his life. We moved to Kansas City on Easter Sunday of 2023. We got to the Golden Ox as quickly as we could. It's down by Kemper Arena or whatever it's called now. The atmosphere here is amazing. We sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which was super cool, and something we've only done once before at Michelin star restaurant in Las Vegas. I had the gazpacho which was a special during summer. It rocked! My wife had the wedge salad which she liked a lot. She also had a fillet Oscar, but it didn't have asparagus, and was kind of weird in her opinion. The special that night was smoked prime rib, so, instead of having the sirloin, I intended, I had the special, and it was incredible! I was trying to do a low-carb thing so I had the ratatouille, which was also a special that night instead of any kind of potato. It was a very nice dinner for me. My wife didn't quite enjoy it as much, but she has given the greenlight for us to return. I want to try the sirloin and see if it is as good as I hope it is. read more

The atmosphere of this place is so cool. I loved looking at all the old pictures on the walls from KC. My grandpa used to go here when he was younger so I was excited to try it for my bday. I started with a glass of Cab which was standard. To eat I did the ribeye with a loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it and very flavorful. But the real star of the show was the baked potato. You would think something so simple wouldn't make this much of an impact but it literally was the best baked potato i've ever had. Soooo good. For dessert we did the tiramisu and that was a miss. Our waitress was good, maybe came around a little too often but no other complaints. Let me start by saying I was very excited to bring great friends to an iconic KC restaurant for their first time but it did not go as I was hoped for. We arrived at the time of our reservation, the hostess seated us in the dining room that had 4 other tables with patrons. The remainder of the restaurant was completely empty, she sat us under an A/C vent pointing straight down, it was like a wind tunnel. We asked the hostess if we could move to another table due to our wives stating it was too cold where she sat us. The hostess immediately said "No I can't do that" We requested again to move and there was no way she would entertain our request. At this point I was very disappointed due to seeing 7 other 4 top tables all set with no customers at the table that she could have given us. Due to celebrating a special event this evening we let it go although our spouses were absolutely freezing. About 45 minutes later the same goth hostess sat another table next to us, the wife in this couple asked the hostess if they could move from a 2 top table to the 4 top table that I asked for earlier, she gladly obliged and moved them immediately? After I observed this I kindly went to the hostess to ask why she could not provide the same customer service that I just asked for earlier? She stated that the other tables are reserved already? I asked "did those customers reserve those exact tables that I requested? She said "no but I have all of my tables planned already?" Huh, they have been completely empty since we arrived? When I had this discussion with her a second time there were still 5 - 4 top tables open? At this point I wanted to enjoy the evening and just decided that this unfortunate event would not ruin even though our spouses were very uncomfortable and cold. The interior was dark and club-like and was fitting for a place founded in 1949. The music was too load to have a conversation without speaking loudly to compete with the music. Somewhat lower on the volume would be better for conversations. Parking was easy in the lot behind the building. Our server, Will, was fantastic, the best part of the evening. He was attentive, funny, knowledgeable and was able to describe all the options and answer questions about food and drinks. The food was okay, and not up to par for the prices. I tried the Manhattan, an Akaushi New York Strip for $56 dollars and was disappointed at how tough and gristly it was. Ordered Char Rare and it came with zero char. (Also known as Pittsburgh, and black and blue.) Disappointing to have it arrive without it at a steakhouse when I can make it at home. One of our companions ordered a dry aged steak and was disappointed at the flavor and lack of tenderness. No one in the group was pleased with the quality based on price. I'd ask for my prime rib to come out medium however, the outside was cooked to medium, but the inside was still a little more raw than I would've liked. They cook with an open wood fire in the flavor comes through in the meat as well as the salmon. Had a great dinner, then the check for about $300+ came. When I went to the men's room my wife reminded the waitress it was my birthday. My steak was cooked to a great uncooked Rare just the way I like. Getting a rare steak that is cooked right is hard in KC. The steaks had good salt and char. Really if I want a steak in KC right now I'm going to the OX. The tartare needed more salt, the calamari was over cooked and sitting in oil - so no it wasn't perfect but over all I left happy and excited that I we went. In my 25+ years living in the Kansas City area, I have never been to the Golden Ox and I have been missing out! We were greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us in a small back room. Our waiter Craig came over with a smile and proceeded to give us some interesting history on not only the business, but the building, describing where the original bar used to be, the carpet that was saved after one of the fires, and the unique light fixtures. He recognized that we had brought a very nice bottle of red wine (they have a $20 corkage fee) and quickly came back with a decanter. He had a thorough knowledge of the menu and was very accommodating when we requested to share certain menu items. We ordered the escargot for starters which is traditionally prepared with garlic butter sauce. The bread basket had a nice assortment of breads and we split a delicious wedge salad. For our entrees, we had the Arrachera (marinated skirt steak), English pea risotto, and the special of the evening, butternut squash ravioli with goat cheese and pomegranate. The steak was tender and very flavorful, the risotto was a bit bland, and the pasta was nothing short of spectacular. It tasted like fall and was the favorite of the evening. If you decide to have dinner here save time to drop in next door at the Stockyards Brewery, which used to be the original bar for the Golden Ox. It feels like you're stepping back in time. Ordered the following: - Kansas City Strip - 8/10: bone in, huge 16 oz. Ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly cooked. Very juicy and flavorful. A side note from the server: I asked what the difference was between a KC strip and NY strip and she says they're basically the same, although theirs came first :) she's right, though. It's the same cut of meat. - Wedge salad - 8/10: excellent refreshing starter. Crisp, large lettuce. Buttermilk dill had a little bit of egg in it, which I loved. - Garlic parsley fries - 6/10: fries had very little to no crunch. Not so good. - Tiramisu - 7.5/10 - Came in a glass. That's the quote I received from the Hostess when I shared with her my complaint after dinner regarding our table (as an aside, I made the reservation months ago). The details of the evening don't matter a much as the bad attitude does, between the unfriendly reception at the hostess stand, the waiter who badgered us when we sent back a Caesar Salad because it contained shallots that one of my guests could not eat, to the infamous comment at the end of the evening, it was a dreadful experience. I really, really enjoyed the Golden Ox. It was one of those places that simultaneously takes you back in time but has enough updates (to the menu and atmosphere) that it feels fresh-enough. We had to get the KC Strip, because of obligations to history and place. But then we also tried the pork chops. I'll be honest, I'm not sure which was better. The KC stip was as good as we hoped it would be. It hit the spot: well cooked, well seasoned. But the pork chops are mind-blowing. Beer brined, check. Root beer cherry demi glace, check. Juicy, check. It was the highlight for me... But my spouse will root for the beef. Onion rings (delicious), mashed potatoes (very good), creamed spinach (very good) rounded out our dinner (and lunch the next day). We recently moved from Ft. You know you're going to have a great evening when you and your server immediately connect. We were exceptionally pleased by Sondra who has worked at the restaurant for 2.5 years. Her husband is also a chef there. She definitely knows the story of the menu. After ordering some cocktails, we started with Steak Tartare. It was unusual as it was served with chips, rather than small pieces of toast. It was a winner. We then ordered Wedge salads with its delicious ranch dressing. Very tasty. For our dinner we ordered The Drover, a 56-ounce Ribeye, Bone-in Midwest Angus that would have made Fred Flintstone happy. It arrived perfectly grilled, super tender and already sliced. Think of it as a Tomahawk. Baked Potatoes and Risotto were excellent sides. For the dessert, Sondra recommended the Cheesecake and it was superb. I'm usually someone who doesn't order Cheesecake, but I'm so glad we did. Everything about this evening caused me to erase the bad first experience. Give it a try. So disappointed tonite. Food all was just meh. Honestly better steaks and sides at Texas Roadhouse. We ordered prime rib- kc strip and some other cuts. Most were not cooked to our specifications and no check by the server. Sides were poor to average. Creamed spinach was more like spinach with some milk. Iced tea sat empty much of nite and would have never been refilled if not requested. Server was rushed as probably too many tables but we did not feel comfortable for dinner duration. The price point is way too high for this kind of food and service. I am sad that this place has slipped way down the pile since the last time we were there. We went to the golden ox to celebrate the holidays and reminisce about a restaurant we used to love. No good. We were seated at a table next to a large group that was very loud. We couldn't visit well... and I realize that's just a happenstance. Our server imo opinion was just ok. We weren't hurried but didn't check in much either. Onion rings to start were good...salads a little droopy but ok. My problem was my entree. I got the cod ...swimming in a beet puree that overpowered everything and the cod was so overcooked and dry (despite the sauce!). Another person got the skirt steak and said it was very dry and tough... our waiter seemed to not notice! I will say 2 people got steaks of some sort and said they were fine. For the price (and it was pricey) it was really not good. So many other places to go that are better and less pricey too. The wine list was very expensive too. Had our Christmas celebration dinner at Golden Ox this year. The place feels very retro and has photos of the history of the stockyard everywhere. We grabbed a drink at the bar. The drinks were good. We were then seated. Our service was great! Super friendly and timely. We each got a steak with a side. Steaks were good, not great, and unfortunately, I didn't feel like the quality matched the price. The French fries were delicious!
