So we hired JV Handyworks for a remote repair on a condo that had a fair amount of water damage, deferred maintenance and two live in occupants. The project seemed simple, remodel floor, paint, add a some fixtures. But that, as it always does, changed. After 30 years working with other contractors, I have seen how things can get gummed up. So when it came time to do the work, I expected some entanglement, some issue. But there wasn't. Everything went smoothly, even when we ran into scope changes from mold, water damage, needing extra materials, etc. If there were any snags, JV would anticipate and correct them. He walked us through the process and everything involved to have my backyard done. The quote came out to roughly $23,000 for basic pavers and turf. While it seemed pricey they assured us everything that has to be filed to the HOA would be handled by them. My HOA required all new construction homes to have their backyards completed within a year of purchase and they assured me that they would handle the procedural processes to have all work approved and filed with the HOA. This took place in November of 2024, now in February of 2026 I am being held to a violation for no notice of completion by my HOA and must attend a hearing for not giving notice of completion. They are not even aware of the work that was done. Ron's partner (I think the name is Tyler) was the one that I provided all the necessary documents to. They alleged that they had a partnership as a preferred contractor with my HOA and everything would be done smoothly. Clearly this was at least incompetence or at worst dishonest business practices taking advantage of young new homeowners who had just started a family. They also assured me that the first three months of payments would be covered and that I would receive a check for it and I never did, when asked by me following up I was ghosted. Additionally the work was not up to the "high standards" they stated. When I was called by the office to give my approval upon completion I pointed out several items that caught my attention and was told by them that I have to say yes because it is easier for them to fix any issues through the warranty process, they were upset about my call as well and prompted an in person visit by them. We are both two full time professionals with a two year old so the issues fell on the back burner because we were just happy to have a landscaped backyard for our son to play in and celebrate his 1st birthday the next month rather than dirt. The main reason we chose this company was because they assured us they would remove the barriers of the HOA by handling it themselves, we feel cheated and lied to and has left us in a terrible position. If we had known that they were not preferred partners with our HOA we would have never done any work with them. Which why I am sure they brought it up in the first place. 10/10 would never work with this company again if I won't have to and would never recommend it to anyone else as they are clearly not fans of honest business practices.

My long held belief was that Alex communcicated well, cared and and seemed knowledgable about the work to be done. I held that impression up until the last week of their work here. Alex is very personable and I was fooled. Only a couple of Alexs' guys had pride in their work. The remainder were in a hurry to complete the work, inexperienced and damaged our property as they went. Besides the work taking twice as long as planned we had two issues: Shoddy work was done on a built in wall unit that was way over priced and came out looking like it was built in someone's back yard. The other issue was the damaged property which included a broken toilet, laquer spilled on the new tile flooring, paint spilled on items in my garage, paint spilled outside the house on cement, damage to our front door, a broken interior door knob, broken glass top on my office desk, etc. We mostly dealt with Alex who is listed on the license as an officer in the company. The license is held by his Dad, Rick. Near the end of our job Rick sent me an email stating that though I was displeased their work met industry standards and they would waive my final payment of $4,800 which should satisfy me for the work left incomplete and our damaged property. I have chosen to accept his offer and not pursue the matter through small claims court or the CSLB. In either of those options I believe I would prevail way beyond the $4,800, but the hassle exceeds the benefit. We spent just over $30,000 with the company and would never do any business with them again.
