Well, it took twelve years of us living in Austin to go to this institution that's only a couple miles from our house. We came, completely on a whim (like, we were driving by and just pulled in), for lunch this past Saturday and had such fabulous time. It feels like "old Austin" has frozen in time here. The place reeks of fish (ofc!) and the whole vibe is this odd-like Margaritaville-hospital cafeteria-fish market mash up. Magically, it all somehow works. We ordered at the counter and happily sat at the table with our beers taking the whole scene in. If we're being honest, the food is just OK. The fried catfish that our daughter ordered honestly tasted like it had been refrozen and it was bland. Our fresh fish--the blackened drum and the grilled trout--were excellent, though, so that made it for it in the piscine category. As for side, there were highs and there were lows. We doubt that they make the hush puppies from scratch, but damn, they were good. We were also happy with the fried okra and the spaghetti squash that they had on special. Green beans are wet and canned, and the side salad is the usual bagged kind of stuff. Actually, they had this very unique mac-n-cheese situation that was made with spaghetti(!) and had a broiled cheese lid that we were not mad at. We're not going to pretend that this was any kind of A+ "quality seafood" situation. It's not. But there is a VIBE and we were there for it and there is a massive shark that is hanging from the ceiling wearing Mardi Gras beads. C'mon! This is the Austin we know and love! It was my first time trying this place and I was not disappointed! There is plenty of parking and a bus stop nearby. The decor was ocean core but not overwhelming at all. You either order at the far back counter, if dining, or at the other counter near the entrance and on the left, if ordering their seafood items. The very honest and friendly cashier made great recommendations. We ended up trying the coconut shrimp, catfish, and spaghetti Mac n cheese. The dining area has moveable tables to accommodate large groups, so this is a great spot to gather a large group or family. They bring your food to your table. I really like the sweet and spicy sauce for the shrimp. The catfish filets were perfectly fried and lightly breaded, and large in size. It was not pricy for the quality and quantity of the food. Maybe I caught them on an off day. I have been looking forward to trying this place for years and finally stopped in to give them a try. If you're eating in the dining area, you order at the counter, and they bring out your food when it's ready. Other than that, it is entirely self service, to include getting drinks. Based on previous reviews, and the fact it is also a seafood market, I was expecting really tasty food. I ordered the Go Fish dinner, choosing cod and oysters, along with okra and hush puppies. Unfortunately, I would grade what I got about high school cafeteria level. The oysters had a nice fresh flavour, but all the other items were pretty bland, and not served hot. Usually, fried foods prepared fresh need to cool down so you don't burn your mouth, but all my items were warm at best. The fish and okra were pretty chewy, and after I started eating, I noticed my hushpuppies didn't make it out to my table. When I went back to the counter and asked, the lady turned to the kitchen, said "I need an order of hushpuppies", and was handed the order in a little paper tray immediately. So, obviously some items are precooked and just sitting before being handed out. Looking for an "old school" vibe place for one of the best Happy Hours in Austin? This is our go-to date night spot when we want to go out but, its a stay in the budget night. $1.50 oysters, .35 cent peel and eat shrimp and beer specials on Fridays, Saturdays and other nights. The oysters are fresh, just shucked and you can order how many you want during the happy hour time , which starts at 4pm. The shrimp is peel and eat and even with a little work, totally worth the .35 price. Beers are always ice cold and the service is great. We love sitting at the bar and find an often eclectic group there. It's super casual and the perfect shorts and a tee shirt place. There are a good amount of choices on the menu. I have to say, for the name and for the price, the food fell short a bit, particularly the seafood. Come here for the food without any frills, definitely not for the environment. Outside looks uninviting but when you walk in, you're transported to an in-house quasi fish market along with a deli of sorts. There's a huge spot to sit down so choose anywhere you'd like after you pay a pretty penny for all the food. Yes, it's good but the prices are just through the roof. It's a casual spot but you're gonna be paying premium prices. I'll be back if I can afford it again in the future and if I find myself in that part of town. Service is okay. Parking lot always seems to be full, which is a good sign for a restaurant of the size. Quality seafood wholesale is right off of 290 at airport Boulevard heading into town. So much going on inside. It's not just a restaurant, they have a bar with bar seating that will also feed you. There is also a meat market counter with fresh fish on ice that you can purchase independently of eating here. There is also a large dining room for many large parties. We sat at a table and ordered mini large plotters of oysters. Some were East Coast's served over ice and we ordered a couple of grilled California coast oysters that were huge! I also ordered a blackened, Black Drum fish. If you haven't had it, it's a meaty, white fish. It's really good. I will have to come back for this one alone. It was served with a side of green beans and a Caesar salad. All was recommended by my server, Jackson. This guy was cool. Understood all the plates that they served and understood my needs... Especially when my wife had many choices. If you like a lively restaurant come here on a Friday night. I am sure this place gets packed with people. For lunch I was delighted to see their was an average amount of people seated. You could say they combine old fashioned charm with modern declining standards. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that were an option, but I'm rounding down to 3. The good - The day we visited they were running a crab special. We got a pound of boiled broken crab legs for $19, but they didn't look broken to me. I would assume they were letting less-than-perfect crab leg clusters accumulate in their freezer and then unloading them all as a special today? My friend and I found the crab delicious. She also loved her oysters, but I can't stand oysters so I can't comment any more on those. The disappointment- My favorite thing at Quality Seafood might be their macaroni and cheese made with spaghetti. This time, the cheese on top was kind of burnt - not black, but rock solid as if it had been kept under heat for a long time. I also tried the clam chowder which did not taste much like clam chowder. The serving presentation was sloppy, and I kept dragging my sleeve through the spilled chowder. The vegetables were fine. When I got home, my husband said I smelled like a "smelly pirate hooker" (a line from Anchorman.) I don't remember too much of a fishy smell, but I guess it accumulated over time. I heard so many great things about quality seafood. I was so excited to stock up on fresh fish and what ever else I thought I would love. The parking lot is pretty large. Which is such a gem in Austin. Am I right? They are near the highway too, so easy to get to and easy to leave. Just zip right back on the highway. Quality Seafood is a market and a restaurant. They're attached. You can literally sit down and eat, order food, and order fresh market food to go. How convenient. As you walk in, the market is to your left and the restaurant is to your right. The bar sets them apart. The being in the middle. They have a long section displayed of fish on ice. They do have muscles as well. They sell beer and wine. And also some frozen foods too. Service was wonderful. I did ask a few questions, but for the most part, everything was labeled and basically straight forward. They do have Maine lobster, and I'm thrilled to see Maine. I don't buy anything that says "Northern Atlantic" has to say Maine. Maine has strikes catching guidelines. Good for us and good for the future of lobsters. A lot of fish is farmed raised. I was hoping for wild caught. Maybe it's just the season. Not a lot of wild caught fish in the winter months. I'm not sure. I did pick up Texas Brown Tail Shrimp. I think that's what they are called. The sign did say off the Coast of Texas. I did clean them up at home and cooked them for dinner that night. I used Gochujung Olive oil, which is a spicy olive oil and a little Coconut balsamic vinegar. The shrimp was outstanding. Took the flavors very well. Shrimp was soft and flavorful. As someone who grew up here in Austin, this business has been here for many decades. It continues to stand the test of time since 1938. However, as my memory takes me wayyyy back, I was reminded this place had more fresh seafood choices and less dining area. I was taken aback by the main seafood counter which was about only 12 feet in length and another smaller one next to it. Most larger grocery stores have a better selection. After looking around, I decided on a late lunch consisting of fried shrimp with two sides and a beer. Their coleslaw is very heavy on the mayo and their fries are good, but neither are very special. They do make their own cocktail sauce in house, but the six shrimp I got definitely were not even close to jumbo. To be honest, I've had a better shrimp basket at a tourist joint for less money. And yes, that tip screen starting at 18% will be waiting for you when you run your card. At least they definitely have some decent local craft beers on tap and in cans. They also have wine and beer to go. If you strip away the iconic mystique of this establishment, it is basically just a boring place to grab a beer and some seafood with a no frills ambience in an old building. It was a total waste of $30! The soup was edible. I had to send the gumbo back because it was plain NASTY. I ordered a blackened grill shrimp poboy. It wasn't blackened. It didn't even have seasoning on it. The oysters were the absolute nastiest oysters I ever had. I don't understand Texans. This place shouldn't even be in business. Don't go there y'all. Been coming to this hidden gem for years. Prior to the pandemic, my friend and I would come once a week to get our $1 oyster fix in. They still offer the happy hour menu from 4pm - 6pm. This includes 35cent peel-and-eat shrimp (always so tasty!) and $2 Modelo or whatever beer of choice they have at the time. If you go to their website, they update their specials daily. They do still offer the $1 gulf oysters and $2 East Coast oysters! They have a nice variety as well. We recently got to try about 8 different types of oysters which was fun. We always sit at the bar when we come. The service is the same ladies who have been there for years. They definitely favor the regulars. Its a 'dive bar' style feel when it comes to the service. They do offer really fresh seafood to purchase to cook at home. They used to offer cooking classes and other cool things here unsure if they still do this or not, I didn't see anything on their wall when I last went. Plenty of parking which is always a bonus. Quality seafood is a staple in the community. Some of the coldest beers on tap, friendly bar staff who seem to know everyone who pulls up to the bar. Crawfish is expensive here but where is it not in central Texas. One of the best deals is the snow crab clusters here. Wow they are good and nice portion size too. Fried okra, boudin balls, hush puppies and spaghetti Mac n cheese are my usual go to sides here. I love picking up seafood from the market too. They even make their own remoulade. We haven't even informed quite some time. Hours and days have changed. Open Wednesday thru Saturday. Our favorite dish is their whole lobster. Sadly by 4pm they were sold out. I was very disappointed. My dining partner got the fried cod and a side of potato salad. He said both were served at the appropriate temperature and were very good. I ended up with the Snow Crab Clusters. It was a generous serving at least five clusters with a carafe of butter. Next time I will eliminate that since I don't use it, and I hate to waste. I got a side of cornbread, which I believe ended up being jalapeño cornbread. It was very good. The crab was tasty but I find snow crab very frustrating because there's very little meat in it and you have to work very hard for it. We both enjoyed our meals . As an aside, they serve soft drinks tea as well as adult beverages. They have a full bar and it was packed. It's near IH 35 and off of Airport Boulevard.
