I also love anything blackened and they do it well here... the one thing I would add is more butter on the cast iron since the fish can get really dry. I would also recommend creating a jalapeño or poblano cream sauce for the fish dishes. The AC in the bar area is broken so eating there midday was pretty brutal. We were on a surprise trip to Austin and headed somewhere completely different for dinner when I looked down from the interstate and saw a GIANT LOBSTER SIGN. Now listen. I'm originally from New England. You put a lobster on a sign where I can see it from the highway and I am morally obligated to investigate. Sorry, original dinner plans. We have seafood to inspect. Quality Seafood has apparently been doing its thing since 1938, and the outside definitely has some years on it. It reminded me a little of an old Kmart shopping plaza. DO NOT LET THAT SCARE YOU OFF. Once inside, there's a lot going on. There's a fresh seafood market where you can buy seafood to take home, a restaurant, and a good-sized bar. Ordering is counter-style. Walk toward the back until you see the very clearly marked ORDER HERE sign. Place your order, grab your table number and have a seat. They'll bring everything out to you. First things first... RAW OYSTERS. Oh. My. Stars. Being a New England girl, I LOVE raw oysters. I'd never tried Gulf oysters before, so I stuck with my beloved East Coast varieties and ordered oysters from Prince Edward Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. At $2.50 each, I thought they were very reasonably priced. And they were PHENOMENAL. Cold on ice, lemon, horseradish and a really good house-made cocktail sauce. Every single one was delicious. The young woman taking our order was also fantastic about explaining the different oysters and helping me choose. Then there's Kathy at the bar. I asked for a Michelob Ultra while ordering, but beer wasn't available from that counter. Kathy happened to overhear me and said she'd take care of it. And she did. She brought my beer right over. Little things like that matter to me. Now for dinner... I ordered fried oysters. Doug ordered fried clam strips. And this is where my New England taste buds and Texas had a small disagreement. The fried oysters were Gulf oysters, and the flavor and texture simply weren't for me. Doug felt similarly about the clam strips. That doesn't mean they were prepared badly. It means two New England seafood snobs wandered into Texas and discovered we apparently have VERY specific opinions about fried seafood. Lesson learned. Sides were mixed for us, too. The potato salad was okay but pretty heavy on the pimento for my taste. I found the coleslaw a little too mayo-heavy. The French fries, however? Very good. So would we go back? ABSOLUTELY. Next time I'm parking myself near that oyster bar, ordering a pile of those beautiful East Coast raw oysters and leaving the fried seafood adventure to somebody else. Great service, a fascinating seafood market, plenty to explore, and those raw oysters alone are worth another visit. And now... Quality Seafood Market has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In fact, my family has been coming here since before I was born. I can't even guess how many times I've eaten here. I came with my grandparents to pick up oysters and shrimp from the market to take home for family dinners. It's one of those places that feels tied to a lot of good memories. The seafood market has a good selection of fresh seafood, and everyone has always been friendly and helpful. On the expanded restaurant side, you order at the counter and the food is brought out to your table surprisingly fast. They also have a full bar and a fountain drink station. One of the things I love most about this place is that the food is pretty good for the mid range restaurants price. My favorites are the peel-and-eat shrimp and the fried shrimp, but the hidden gem on the menu is the spaghetti mac and cheese. If you've never tried it, you should. Their bread pudding is also huge and easily big enough to share. Families will appreciate that they offer a kids menu. OI hate to admit that I rarely visit anymore, but on my most recent visit, everything was pretty much what I've come to expect over the years. The dining area is not fancy, but was clean, the tables and chairs were maintained, and the fried shrimp was just as good as I remembered. My only complaint was that the salt and pepper shakers were downright filthy. They were dirty enough that I didn't want to use them, which was a problem because that spaghetti mac and cheese screams for a little black pepper. The dining area has moveable tables to accommodate large groups, so this is a great spot to gather a large group or family. They bring your food to your table. Maybe I caught them on an off day. I have been looking forward to trying this place for years and finally stopped in to give them a try. If you're eating in the dining area, you order at the counter, and they bring out your food when it's ready. Other than that, it is entirely self service, to include getting drinks. Based on previous reviews, and the fact it is also a seafood market, I was expecting really tasty food. I ordered the Go Fish dinner, choosing cod and oysters, along with okra and hush puppies. Unfortunately, I would grade what I got about high school cafeteria level. The oysters had a nice fresh flavour, but all the other items were pretty bland, and not served hot. Usually, fried foods prepared fresh need to cool down so you don't burn your mouth, but all my items were warm at best. The fish and okra were pretty chewy, and after I started eating, I noticed my hushpuppies didn't make it out to my table. When I went back to the counter and asked, the lady turned to the kitchen, said "I need an order of hushpuppies", and was handed the order in a little paper tray immediately. So, obviously some items are precooked and just sitting before being handed out. Food is always well-prepared, tasty, and fairly priced. My wife and I had the black drum. I had it blackened and she had it broiled. Nice size piece of fish with a Caesar salad and fried okra. Okra was a really large portion and perfectly fried. Lots of choices on the menu and quite a few specials. I started with steamed clams which were really good, served in a broth with some toasted bread for dipping. Lots of parking and seating and a bar area too. Why not 5 stars? So, food was 5 star worthy. And almost every person that served us was friendly, upbeat, and clearly interested in providing a great customer experience. After having this place saved on my list for awhile now, I got the chance to visit. Ambiance was fine, and the guy at the register seemed a bit over his job, although the other staff were friendly. I have to say, for the name and for the price, the food fell short a bit, particularly the seafood. The shrimp cocktail was $17 but there were only 6 regular sized pieces, and the texture was a bit limp. Everything was just okay- the fried food breading was thick and and not that crunchy like they'd been sitting out. My wife and I arrived at shortly before closing time (8 PM). Our order was taken at the counter. After being advised that our first choices were no longer available, we settled on oysters Rockefeller, french fries, and fried oysters. Payment was expected with the order. This is not unusual (at least in a fast food venue), but a tip was also requested, contrary to the convention that tips normally are based on the quality of service. If I could have anticipated the service, there would have been no tip. The potatoes were delivered in a paper basket, with the fried oysters buried under them. When I asked for condiments, I was directed to another counter where I found tartar sauce and ketchup dispensers, but containers to hold them. The server returned to tell us that the kitchen had decided "not to make any more Rockefeller." When I began to revise our order, I was told that the kitchen was closed. He asked whether I would like the cost of the missing oysters refunded to my credit card, apparently offering me the opportunity to pay for them anyway. I told him that I would indeed like a refund, with the tip included. I discovered later that he had overruled my request and opted to keep the tip. But the fried oysters were pretty good. read more

Outside looks uninviting but when you walk in, you're transported to an in-house quasi fish market along with a deli of sorts. There's a huge spot to sit down so choose anywhere you'd like after you pay a pretty penny for all the food. Yes, it's good but the prices are just through the roof. The fries were actually ok, slight coating of flour, not my favorite way for fries but they were not bad per se. The fish though really failed at the coating. You know how you take fried fish home and reheat it later and the crust feels a bit 'tough' or slightly 'chewy'. Well, it took twelve years of us living in Austin to go to this institution that's only a couple miles from our house. We came, completely on a whim (like, we were driving by and just pulled in), for lunch this past Saturday and had such fabulous time. It feels like "old Austin" has frozen in time here. The place reeks of fish (ofc!) and the whole vibe is this odd-like Margaritaville-hospital cafeteria-fish market mash up. Magically, it all somehow works. We ordered at the counter and happily sat at the table with our beers taking the whole scene in. If we're being honest, the food is just OK. The fried catfish that our daughter ordered honestly tasted like it had been refrozen and it was bland. Our fresh fish--the blackened drum and the grilled trout--were excellent, though, so that made it for it in the piscine category. As for side, there were highs and there were lows. We doubt that they make the hush puppies from scratch, but damn, they were good. We were also happy with the fried okra and the spaghetti squash that they had on special. Green beans are wet and canned, and the side salad is the usual bagged kind of stuff. Actually, they had this very unique mac-n-cheese situation that was made with spaghetti(!) and had a broiled cheese lid that we were not mad at. We're not going to pretend that this was any kind of A+ "quality seafood" situation. It's not. But there is a VIBE and we were there for it and there is a massive shark that is hanging from the ceiling wearing Mardi Gras beads. C'mon! This is the Austin we know and love! The good - The day we visited they were running a crab special. We got a pound of boiled broken crab legs for $19, but they didn't look broken to me. I would assume they were letting less-than-perfect crab leg clusters accumulate in their freezer and then unloading them all as a special today? My friend and I found the crab delicious. She also loved her oysters, but I can't stand oysters so I can't comment any more on those. The disappointment- My favorite thing at Quality Seafood might be their macaroni and cheese made with spaghetti. This time, the cheese on top was kind of burnt - not black, but rock solid as if it had been kept under heat for a long time. I also tried the clam chowder which did not taste much like clam chowder. The serving presentation was sloppy, and I kept dragging my sleeve through the spilled chowder. The vegetables were fine. When I got home, my husband said I smelled like a "smelly pirate hooker" (a line from Anchorman.) I don't remember too much of a fishy smell, but I guess it accumulated over time. I've been wanting to see this restaurant and dine in. We decided since it is Saturday what better time to drop by for lunch. Parking lot always seems to be full, which is a good sign for a restaurant of the size. Quality seafood wholesale is right off of 290 at airport Boulevard heading into town. So much going on inside. It's not just a restaurant, they have a bar with bar seating that will also feed you. There is also a meat market counter with fresh fish on ice that you can purchase independently of eating here. There is also a large dining room for many large parties. We sat at a table and ordered mini large plotters of oysters. Some were East Coast's served over ice and we ordered a couple of grilled California coast oysters that were huge! I also ordered a blackened, Black Drum fish. If you haven't had it, it's a meaty, white fish. It's really good. I will have to come back for this one alone. It was served with a side of green beans and a Caesar salad. All was recommended by my server, Jackson. This guy was cool. Understood all the plates that they served and understood my needs... Especially when my wife had many choices. If you like a lively restaurant come here on a Friday night. I am sure this place gets packed with people. For lunch I was delighted to see their was an average amount of people seated. I heard so many great things about quality seafood. I was so excited to stock up on fresh fish and what ever else I thought I would love. The parking lot is pretty large. Which is such a gem in Austin. Am I right? They are near the highway too, so easy to get to and easy to leave. Just zip right back on the highway. Quality Seafood is a market and a restaurant. They're attached. You can literally sit down and eat, order food, and order fresh market food to go. How convenient. As you walk in, the market is to your left and the restaurant is to your right. The bar sets them apart. The being in the middle. They have a long section displayed of fish on ice. They do have muscles as well. They sell beer and wine. And also some frozen foods too. Service was wonderful. I did ask a few questions, but for the most part, everything was labeled and basically straight forward. They do have Maine lobster, and I'm thrilled to see Maine. I don't buy anything that says "Northern Atlantic" has to say Maine. Maine has strikes catching guidelines. Good for us and good for the future of lobsters. A lot of fish is farmed raised. I was hoping for wild caught. Maybe it's just the season. Not a lot of wild caught fish in the winter months. I'm not sure. I did pick up Texas Brown Tail Shrimp. I think that's what they are called. The sign did say off the Coast of Texas. I did clean them up at home and cooked them for dinner that night. I used Gochujung Olive oil, which is a spicy olive oil and a little Coconut balsamic vinegar. The shrimp was outstanding. Took the flavors very well. Shrimp was soft and flavorful. As someone who grew up here in Austin, this business has been here for many decades. It continues to stand the test of time since 1938. However, as my memory takes me wayyyy back, I was reminded this place had more fresh seafood choices and less dining area. I was taken aback by the main seafood counter which was about only 12 feet in length and another smaller one next to it. Most larger grocery stores have a better selection. After looking around, I decided on a late lunch consisting of fried shrimp with two sides and a beer. Their coleslaw is very heavy on the mayo and their fries are good, but neither are very special. They do make their own cocktail sauce in house, but the six shrimp I got definitely were not even close to jumbo. To be honest, I've had a better shrimp basket at a tourist joint for less money. And yes, that tip screen starting at 18% will be waiting for you when you run your card. At least they definitely have some decent local craft beers on tap and in cans. If you strip away the iconic mystique of this establishment, it is basically just a boring place to grab a beer and some seafood with a no frills ambience in an old building. It was a total waste of $30! The soup was edible. I had to send the gumbo back because it was plain NASTY. I ordered a blackened grill shrimp poboy. It wasn't blackened. It didn't even have seasoning on it. The oysters were the absolute nastiest oysters I ever had. I don't understand Texans. This place shouldn't even be in business. Don't go there y'all. There's no refunds period. That's a sign that they know the food sucks. There should be a law against serving nastiness like that. Service was good but not enough for $30. read more

Been coming to this hidden gem for years. Prior to the pandemic, my friend and I would come once a week to get our $1 oyster fix in. They still offer the happy hour menu from 4pm - 6pm. This includes 35cent peel-and-eat shrimp (always so tasty!) and $2 Modelo or whatever beer of choice they have at the time. If you go to their website, they update their specials daily. They do still offer the $1 gulf oysters and $2 East Coast oysters! They have a nice variety as well. We recently got to try about 8 different types of oysters which was fun. We always sit at the bar when we come. The service is the same ladies who have been there for years. They definitely favor the regulars. Its a 'dive bar' style feel when it comes to the service. They do offer really fresh seafood to purchase to cook at home. They used to offer cooking classes and other cool things here unsure if they still do this or not, I didn't see anything on their wall when I last went. Plenty of parking which is always a bonus. We have eaten with groups at the tables too and can confirm their menu food is just as good as the bar food. read more
