I cannot speak more highly of Beatrice. She's my fairy godmother, concerned aunt, and fashion consultant all rolled into one! (Emphasis on the fairy godmother!) The first project I ever took to Beatrice was a crazy one. The holidays were fast approaching and I had a vision for gifting my mother and father a shawl and a tie respectively, built from an old fabric keepsake of mine. Even though she had never done a tie before and my fabric choices made the construction a little complex, Beatrice took the whole situation in stride! My parent still love their gifts and Beatrice still asks after them every time I visit. These days I have more traditional work for her. She tailored my bridesmaid dress to fit like a glove, she's mended numerous pieces for me that I love too much to part with, and most recently, Beatrice did a wonderful job shortening and taking in my old prom dress for weddings this summer! I agree with other reviewers that sometimes her notes (or lack thereof) scare me a little -- heck I have a detailed, written to-do list for this afternoon, let alone this month -- but I've never had any issues among the dozen of items I've taken to her. Somehow she remembers not just my vision for each particular garment, but also the details of my latest relationship, how my parents are doing, and when I'll be travelling next. My new favorite tailor. I brought in a bridesmaid dress last week and was flustered because I only had three weeks before the wedding (in NY). I was in and out in 10 minutes, and that was even while waiting for the owner to finish up with another customer. I tried on my dress with my shoes, she measured the hem, told me that she would fix the hook closure on the back, and sent me calmly and happily on my way. I even told her that I wanted to lose a few pounds to fit into the dress better before the wedding, and she stopped me, saying I shouldn't lose any weight because the dress will not fit right (How can I complain about that... great start to my day!) The dress was ready on time, looked amazing, and fit perfectly. The hook was fixed and the price was the same $60 that the owner had told me last week. She is such a pleasant woman who truly seems to enjoy her job and knows a great deal about her work. I live in Somerville, but I will gladly make the trip back to Queenie's if I have anything else that needs alterations! Only downside is that she doesn't accept credit cards (I hate carrying cash) but from my experience, most tailors/dry cleaners are cash only, so no stars deducted for that one. read more

The bridesmaid's dress I had to wear was a size too big, and arrived a few days before I had to travel to the wedding at which I was due. For my dress she added a bustle, shortened the dress, took out the fabric under the lace train, took it in at the chest, and sewed in chest cups. Queen Dressmaker's is great, the owner is extremely friendly, and sweet, and she's altered dresses, coats, jackets, and pants for me, and in the long run a great savings instead of replacing the clothes. I don't live anywhere near this store anymore, but it's still worth for me to drive across town to get her to do my alterations. I know you aren't suppose to touch the shoulders of a structured jacket/coat but she has done a few for me after some significant weight loss & style changes, and most of them came out great. I needed a bridesmaid dress hemmed and taken in a *lot.* She was friendly, approachable, and did a great job. The first time I tried on the altered dress, it was still a bit loose for my preference. (In a strapless, you want to be secure!) But she was happy to take it in a bit more. When I picked up the finished dress, she gave me a little bag with matching straps that she'd made from the extra material in the hem. No charge! The total for shortening and taking it in was $70 or $80 (cash). I will definitely go back for any alterations I need in the future. read more

If I could leave zero stars, I would. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this seamstress even for simple alterations. I brought in a dress for very easy alterations (taking in a convertible dress that was roomy in the sides/bust), was quoted $60, and told it would be ready in a few weeks. I felt this was a bit high (friends have since said they would've expected about $30), but I enjoy supporting local small businesses, and after reading all the positive comments here, I felt that it would probably be worth the price, and potentially be the beginning of a great relationship, as I've got a lot of dresses that need to be tailored this year. A few weeks later I hadn't heard anything and called in to inquire whether or not it was ready for pickup. It was. Unfortunately, she only accepts cash, so I had to come back a different time (note the location is not easily accessible unless you've got a car or a lot of time to kill on public transit). When I was able to make it back, she had lost the tag and tried to charge $70 for the alterations instead of $60. I tried the dress on before leaving, and it seemed a bit loose, but the owner was frazzled (I gather Spring is a particularly busy time of year) and I felt that it was probably best for me to just leave and try it on again at home. I did have to ask for her to finish adding a hook and eye clasp (she'd originally said she'd add one, but hadnt when I picked the dress up). I paid and left, fairly disappointed, but hopeful that with the right bra the dress would fit as per the original fitting. My disappointment deepened, however, when I got home and tried the dress on again. I think she did take it in a bit, but not remotely to the extent that we'd talked about during the initial fitting. I had been quite excited about how the dress could look, but it's a far cry from the finished product. I will have to take it elsewhere for further alterations before it is wearable -- it's still comically poofy, and generally unflatteringly large. I will not be returning to this seamstress. Quality, fair pricing, and customer service are all very important to me, and my experience here fell short on all three points. tl;dr not worth the price read more

My girlfriend tipped me off to this little tailor and dressmaking shop on Belmont Street, just down from the Mt. Auburn Star Market. The woman who runs the place is sweet as pie, super accomodating and charges a pittance for alterations. I was so surprised that taking in a beaded formal dress was only going to cost me $25 despite the fact that she had to restring it. I will definitely take other items here and I highly recommend this little shop if you need any alterations done at all. read more

I bought a store sample wedding dress that fit me really well. The only problem with the dress was the bust area and a couple in the lace near the zipper. Based on the Yelp reviews for Beatrice, I brought my wedding dress to her and she made it seem like brand new. She was very honest and told me what would and what would not work for the alterations I had in mind (I wanted her to make the top portion into a sweetheart verses the straight across and add padding). She followed through and made the dress gorgeous. I went in for 3 try-on sessions and walked away absolutely loving it. She really makes you comfortable too with the "honey this" "honey that". I had quite a bad experience at Queen. I brought in a silk dress on which I wanted a high round neckline made into a v neck. When I came to pick up the dress, Beatrice had given the dress a scoop neck. She had forgotten what I wanted done. Plus she charged me more than her original estimate. I got her to change it again to the v neck, but since fabric had already been cut off, the neckline was lower than I wanted. I think her issue is that she does NO bookkeeping whatsoever. I'm very surprised there aren't more reviews from people complaining that she had done things different from what was wanted. When I dropped off the dress, I was instructed to write my name and phone number on a Post-it. I got no receipt, saying what was to be done, and clients pay in cash. She did do a nice job on the sewing itself, but that really didn't thrill me under the circumstances. read more

Very sweet lady who calls you hunny. She told me that I didn't need a hem (an honest woman!). She did an over bustle for my gown that had multiple thick layers for $40. Very inexpensive compared to any other tailor. She did a great job and had the dress ready in a couple of days. This is a no-frills type of place. I was nervous that the dress didn't have enough fabric in it to accommodate an alteration, and she was careful not to get my hopes up, but she explained exactly what she would do and quoted me a very fair price. And it came out absolutely perfectly! She also described to me how she would create a bustle for the train of my dress, which I never imagined but adds so much elegance and romance to the dress. I actually signed up for yelp just so I could write this review. I got married two weeks ago and used yelp to find my seamstress. I found so many positive reviews of Queen Dressmakers that I decided to go an) d check it out. When I got there, Beatriz was incredibly sweet ("okay, sweetie" is her response to everything) and seemed totally capable despite her tiny shop's less-than-glamorous appearance. I decided to go ahead and use her (her quote was at least $100 less than Alfred Angelo's) to shorten the dress, add a bustle, take in the bodice, and add a belt that I had made myself. The results: WOW. Not only did Beatriz manage to attach the belt that I had made (it was pretty thick and she at first wasn't sure if it could be sewn on), she made me look PERFECT. She had to take in the bodice a few times, but the end result was absolutely dazzling. The first thing everyone said to me at the wedding was that the dress looked like it was specially designed for my body and that they thought the dress rivaled the expensive ones on "Say Yes to the Dress." (I paid $600 for it at AA.) I felt comfortable in my dress all day (a HUGE compliment as I am busty and was worried about having to dance in it or fidget with the top all day) and like a perfect bride. My wedding day honestly would not have been the same without Beatriz's impeccable work and I will recommend her to every bride I know! read more

I was in a wedding in the fall and was sent the dress exactly one week before the wedding. It, of course, did not fit, and I had to frantically find somewhere to alter it before flying off to Phoenix in four days. I had read that Queen's would do a fast and good job, so I made the trek there. I am so happy I did. Beatrice agreed to do it in a few days ("Do you have time to do it?" "No, but I will." Awesome.). She did a really good job with a dress that was somewhat hard to alter because of the ribbing in the bodice. It was SLIGHTLY askew, though, which I feel like is less of a reflection on her than on the dress, and no one noticed at the wedding (on the contrary, the dress received tons of compliments). It was also pretty expensive because it was a rush job. I probably shouldn't drop Queen's a star because of these things, but I'm going to simply because the alterations weren't perfect, and I'm in grad school and don't have a ton of money. However, I would still DEFINITELY recommend this place. read more

I'm never exactly sure what needs updating, but Beatrice has a great eye for what will make the dress look good for my body type. She is so encouraging and sweet and makes me feel fabulous everytime! After getting an unreasonably high quote for wedding dress alterations from Berkachi Bridal and hearing reports of similar costs from other people whose dresses happened to be white, I warily visited Queen Dressmakers and was thrilled when the estimate I got was 1/3 of Berkachi's price. The job was straightforward, and was done well. I really liked how unintimidating the place is, unlike some of those fancy places on Newbury St where you apparently have to be buzzed in - I just walked right in with no appointment, put the dress on, got my estimate and was out the door in 15 minutes. My only complaint was that when I went to pick it up, she asked for $20 more than she had told me it would be. This is not entirely unreasonable since there are no fixed prices and she didn't write down the estimate. I am pretty sure I could have complained and brought it back down to the original price, but at this point I was so tired of the whole alteration business that I just gave it to her and left. Cash only, and if you want bra cups sewn in you have to buy them somewhere else and bring them to her (she suggested Lady Grace in Waltham, I got mine on Amazon.com). read more

This was back when it was actually a woman named Queen who owned the shop... but Beatrice is as incredible and kind as Queen was. She has definitely kept the tradition alive. I brought my grandmother's vintage 1940s wedding gown to Beatrice for my own wedding. Before finding Queen's on Yelp, I had been in touch with a number of other seamstresses from Boston to CT in search of somebody who could handle vintage fabric and would have the skill to make the necessary alterations to the gown. Thank God I found Beatrice! I was in a scary, dark place when I arrived at her small shop, but left feeling confident and calmed by her professionalism. She altered my grandmother's dress without incident , handling it with care, and also took in my reception dress with skill that shamed the original construction and quality. Honestly, the dress looked 10x better when she was done with it, not just because it fit me like a glove, but because she knows how to make high quality garments.
