The alleyway in the middle of the block was closed for construction and walked around the block to cross Castro. It's a cozy table, bench and counter setup. Some of the tables are used for prep by the staff. I ordered the spicy beef stew noodles which was brought shortly. Lots of tender stewed beef chunks with tendon in a shoyu based broth with flecks of chili pepper flakes to make it "spicy". The noodles were wide, flat and nicely chewy. I liked how the beef noodle soup isn't fatty now, but noodles lacked any chew. Stir fried rice cake had lots of vegetables, but kinda wet and no wok taste. Deep fried tofu was soft inside and crispy, very lightly seasoned. Maybe the clay pots are more popular now. We ordered pork belly rice combo, Taiwanese oyster pancake, and simmered seaweed and dry bean curd, and they were all very delicious and authentic from native Taiwanese POV. They offered decent amount of portion and priced affordably for the amount of food provided. This reminds us of the holes-in-the-wall type of restaurants we used to go with family in the neighborhood. Nothing fancy but reliably tasty when you are lazy to cook at home. There is a combination of booths and tables present with some traditional decor but the place is a bit of a dive in looks as well. The beef noodle soup is so so good and authentic. The tendon is so tender and the beef soup base has a rich umami flavor. The noodles are thick and just chewy in the right way. I think that's their best dish. The three cup chicken was good but not too special and the portion was quite small. Salt and pepper fish was a little soggy but flavor was good. We had a party of 3 and got the chongqing spicy tofu, 3 cup chicken, black mushroom with Chinese greens (it's shitake with bok choy), white rice and purple rice (which is purple rice + brown rice). The food was tasty (especially the chongqing spicy tofu). However to be honest I found the prices a bit high for the amount of food that we got. Looking around we didn't get the 3 dish deal that others mentioned--not sure if this deal has been discontinued or we just didn't know about it when we went. Definitely Taiwanese comfort food! I've been coming here since two previous owners and I was basically in a high chair (so about since 20 years ago). We'd get take out at home and I have memories of being fed the Taiwanese beef noodle soup while my dad calls the noodles "Rapunzel" because of how long they are. Over the years the noodle soup has changed from having less dried chili, having less fatty beef shank pieces, and also changing the bok choy to spinach. However, I still believe this Taiwanese beef noodle soup is the best you can get in the area. Its charm is definitely the Szechuan beef noodle soup! However, if you're interested in family style rice and sides, my favorite is general tofu, San bei ji (three cup chicken), and xiao dou miao. read more

Pork chop was authentically seasoned and fried, and braised minced pork rice with braised egg were fine. The spinach side tasted kind of like a banchan, sort of cold baby spinach. I liked the Taiwanese stir-fried rice noodles and sautéed pea sprouts a lot. The noodles had a strong wok hei, which in my Taiwanese experience isn't common, but I enjoyed nonetheless. Queen House is a little hole in the wall Chinese joint in downtown Mountain View. The food here is served family style, which is great because you get to try so many options. All of the food we've had is super flavorful. We really like the green onion beef, sesame chicken, and hot and sour soup. The chow mein is also pretty good. The pork and Chinese chive dumplings and the basil bacon fried rice are okay, but not something we'd order again. Our favorite, though is the sweet and sour pork. The sauce is the perfect amount of tangy, and there are onions, green bell peppers, and pineapple mixed in too. Make sure to get some rice on the side to put the extra sauce on. The portions are large and reasonably priced. The staff isn't super conversational, but service is quick and all of the food comes out hot. Queens House has some of the best tasting Chinese food in the bay area. We've tried their broccoli chicken, beef noodle soup (not Sze Chuan version), green beans and Mushu dishes. These dishes are generous and flavorful. The only issue is, the workers frequently (including yesterday) give us dried out and cracked, and one time moldy mushu crepes for take-outs. These crepes are wrapped in tin foil. They have obviously been bagged and kept refrigerated for at least several months. One can feel the rock hard tin foil wraps when handling them, but the front line workers packed them for us anyway. I strongly advise customers to open up the wraps and examine the crepes before leaving the restaurant when ordering Mushu dishes. read more

We shared three tofu dishes (Kung Pao, Hot Bean Paste, General), one Scallion Cake with Egg, one Sauteed Broccoli With Garlic, and one soy bean milk. I got a Taiwanese Style Chopped Pork Over Rice for myself. Everything was so delicious as per usual: - All the tofu dishes received lots of love, especially the Hot Bean Paste Tofu. - The Sauteed Broccoli With Garlic had such strong garlic aroma, and was gone in minutes. - The Scallion Cake with Egg was super crispy and flavorful, with a thinly spread layer of egg in between pastries. - The soy bean milk amazed everyone with its rich delicious taste of soy. - My Chopped Pork Over Rice was super tasty too.
