Definitely authentic Taiwanese. One of the hardest dishes to make well, fresh, is a "Chinese (savory) donut" -- these folks crushed it. I would come back just for that. Here's what I ordered * Pork chop bento ($13) - pork chop, rice, greens, and a tea egg. A small plate but for the authenticity, worth it! * Scallion cake with egg and Chinese donut: The name sums it up nicely. There's a miscellaneous sauce that's quite typical of these rolls as well. The "donut" was still crispy and made fresh -- so delicious! I included a picture of the tea egg because it's a pretty good indicator of legitimacy. Many places -- not these folks -- will shortcut and just soak the egg in soy sauce. You can usually tell because a) it tastes funny and b) the sauce doesn't soak all the way through, leaving some egg white very pale. These folks had a legit tea egg! COVID-readiness: All the staff were wearing masks, and there was a hand sanitizer by the entrance. The staff is direct and quick -- no formalities, but there's a very strong pro to counteract that: at boogie restaurants, extreme cordiality is matched with very slow turnaround times for the bill, water etc. This is not the case here! The staff very frequently walked by my table and would give me a glance to see if I needed anything; this meant an incredibly fast service. The food also arrived fairly quickly, so I was pretty impressed. All in all, would come back. The storefront was very unassuming but all the more reason to cherish the food here. read more

I can't believe that by picking up my GrubHub order today, I was humiliated by one of the employees shouting profanity at me in front of the public. The server asked me for the order number, and I told him that I left it in my car. I gave my name, and the food that I ordered, and he can check the system. He reluctantly handed me the order, then I headed out the door. Out of nowhere, he chased after me and started cursing at me. I turned around and he pointed a finger at me, and said, "yes, it is you!". I went back and asked for the owner, and explained the profanity that he had been calling me, and he should be fired. Seated for one with no wait at 5pm on a Sunday, but it filled pretty quickly while I was there. Interior of restaurant is small, but has room for two four seat tables and a handful of small tables with one side being a long shared booth. I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup with hot tea included. It was a little too spicy for me, but regardless, I enjoyed it. It had tablespoons of red chili sauce on top of a mountain of beef and noodles with some bok choy squeezed in there. Totally worth the $15 (not including tip). read more

Yet another place we haven't had since COVID and the boys are all asking me "Whyyyy?" As I inhaled the tender yet not overcooked beef, I asked myself the same - "WHY did we wait so long to come back??" Queen House used to be on regular rotation when hubs and I both worked around the area. We happened to be in the area today and I'm SO glad it occurred to us to come back. Between the 2 adults and 2 kiddos, we ordered for takeout: (2) beef and tendon noodle soup: both spicy. Had a little kick so we added a bit of extra broth for baby bear when we got home. (1) deep fried pork chop (appetizer): so good, no one gave me time to snap a pic. Had a light, garlicky breading to it (1) wontons in hot sauce: meaty dumplings in a good wrapper. (1) green onion beef roll: I'm such a sucker for these. I love green onion pancakes. This one didn't disappoint. Yeah...we're pigs. But we had to make up for lost time. Ordered their Beef Stew and Tendon Noodle Soup and when I got home, the beef was quite dry, tendon not stewed enough and the noodles were instant udon. Super desperate for a bowl of hot soup on a rainy day but was a little bit disappointed that we were given udon instead of noodles. Basil, bacon fried rice was okay, perhaps not enough bacon but the Basil certainly was interesting. Hopefully things will slowly get better and Queen House can improve a little on their food. We wanted Taiwanese food and were considering ordering take out from here, but I phoned the restaurant in advance to see if they used peanut oil or peanuts in their dishes since we have severe anaphylactic nut allergies. The guy who answered the phone didn't inspire much confidence in me so I asked to speak to someone who spoke English. There was a big pause and I could hear him talking to someone in Chinese and then he hung up on me! I understand that they are in an area where a lot of people speak Chinese, but unfortunately I am not one of them and to make sure that my family stays safe from deadly allergic reactions, I need to be able to communicate with someone who can reassure me that I won't die from eating their food. I was in the area trying to pick a place to get take out. Looked around and settled on Queen House because I can never go wrong with my favorite: Taiwanese food. I ordered their 3 item combo: dry cooked string beans, pork with dried bean curd, and beef stew clay pot. This combo order came with a box of white rice. I also ordered the Taiwanese sausage fried rice because all the pictures looked so yummy. Portions were pretty large (I was able to get 2-3 meals per person for everything here). I thoroughly enjoyed all the items and the way everything was made felt very authentic. I do wish that each dish had a more distinct flavor/seasoning because all the sauces tasted a tad bit similar to each other. Other than that, I was happy with my order. I don't think I'd make a special trip to downtown Mountain View just for this, but if I'm already in the area and am craving Taiwanese dishes that I can't make at home, I'd stop by Queen House again. read more

This update is based on Jan and Feb 2024 dining experiences. What bugs me is during winter time, they tend to leave the front door open for circulation, since someone in the kitchen or back of the kitchen is smoking for circulation and it makes the place a wind tunnel. My mom and I also on one occasion at dinner sat there longer than they liked, even when they were not full 3/4 and we were told to leave, so they can open up the table. We've been going there for years! It's a dive and not sure how good of hygiene the place has in the back end. Maybe safer to get take out, if you trust them when it's in the middle of winter. Otherwise when the weather is good, try to sit outside if they put tables up. I've been going to this restaurant for a year now & it is genuinely one of my favorite places to eat at in the bay area. i always get the beef noodle soup, and the broth is so good + i love how tender the beef is. it feels like a warm hug on a cold day. their other dishes are delicious too, but nothing compares to the beef noodle soup in my opinion. other dishes i've ordered before are the beef roll, taiwanese pork chop, and shrimp fried rice. i'm sure everything on their menu is tasty though!! read more

This is the closest I've gotten to that street-food authentic oyster pancake (oh-ah-jian) outside of Taiwan and whilst it won't measure up to Shilin Night Market, it'll do for now. They've got indoor and outdoor seating with basic decor. Service is basic, pretty swift with food coming out surprisingly fast. It can run you a pretty penny though it just varies on what ya get. The eats for 2-3 ~$50 with tax n tip: 1. Fried pork chop bento/combo with rice: "QQ" pork chop with a side of seasoned spinach and pork-over-rice (lu rou fan) plus tea egg. NOMs. 2. Oyster pancake: hard to describe except eggy (a bit too much egg) and chewy with sweet/sour like red sauce. Cooked oysters sprinkled throughout. Ok, it's not the exact same taste as I would like it but it'll do. 3. Chili wontons: a good amount for less than $10. Not an absolute must as pretty typical tasting. 4. Beef roll (niu rou jian bing): somewhat oily but taste decent. Essentially a flaky pancake with seasoned beef slices rolled up inside with sprinkles of green onion. 5. Beef noodle soup: bought on a separate occasion...meat was super tough. Recommend skipping or could've been a one-off. All-in-all it's Queen House is still my go-to in Mountain View. Knowing the South Bay is known for having the good chunk of diverse asian cultures, I sought to find a good Taiwanese place as close to the Peninsula as possible. I stumbled upon Queen House from a recommendation of a friend and was curious to try it out. Being on Castro Street, I thought it would be worth a go due to the lively downtown environment, and the other great restaurants I've eaten at in that area. Before arriving, do take note that as of this review, the entirety of Castro Street is pedestrian only! To get to Queen House and other shops/restaurants on this block, park your cars a block or two off or at one of the designated parking lots. In mentioning that the streets are pedestrian only, Queen House has outdoor seating with around four small tables. If looking to eat outdoors, this place like many on Castro Street, would be a good choice! I walked in on a Sunday afternoon around 1:30 to no line and a decent amount of people eating inside. The restaurant had about 8 tables, which led to believe this was one of those good "hole in the wall" places. I sat down with my group and glanced over the menu for a few minutes. While waiting for my party to finish looking over the menu, a waitress came by to serve water to our table. And in no time, we were ready to order. I decided to order a Pork chop Lunch Box (排骨鐵路便當 or "pai gu tie lu bian dang") for 13 dollars. For the entirety of the time I was there, the waitresses were very kind. Every so often they would come by to refill our waters and to check in and see if we were okay. The attentiveness made me feel like I was valued while eating here. For the sheer friendliness of the staff, service gets 5 stars. After 10 minutes of waiting, my food was delivered to our table. At the first glance, the thing that stood out to me the most was the plastic container that the dish was served in. Given I was dining in for the first time in awhile, I expected to be given a standard plate or bowl. It wasn't that big of a deal though, I assumed it was part of the theme of having a "railroad lunchbox". Other than that, the price was actually pretty good for 13 dollars. Taiwanese food in the Bay Area can average at 15 dollars a dish the more south you go, so the 13 dollar price was refreshing. Each of the sides were given in good ratio compared to the pork itself. On top of that, the rice had a large portion of soy sauce minced pork (滷肉) which added extra value on top of the food that was already given. In all, price to portion ratio was very good. The taste of the all the ingredients was probably one of the most unique parts of this experience as I have not eaten at another restaurant where the flavors match this one. Beginning with the vegetables, the pickled veggies had a light sweet and sour flavor. The pieces were also soft, which made it a great addition to the rice. The stir fried green vegetables created balance to the pickled vegetables as it was lightly salted and seasoned with sesame seeds. Eating these alone in large quantity would definitely make me satisfied. The minced pork meat was pretty good as there was a muted soy sauce in it which made it great to eat with everything else. Because it was so subtle, it did not distract from the other foods in the mix. The soy sauce braised egg was alright as the texture was a good balance of softness and composure. I would have asked for just a bit more depth in the flavor of the egg as it seemed to fade into the back of the flavors in the dish. Lastly, the pork chop would be perfect if not for a few things! The meat itself seemed to be hand breaded with a special in-house breading as shown by the more rounded batter spots as opposed to the more flakey panko breading I see most places use for a dish like this. This breading paid off too as the crispiness also was crunchy with flavor filled hotspots in the batter which made the food taste light, savory, and flavorful. The pork was of good quality too, tasting light as well. The only things keeping this pork chop from being the perfect pork chop was the meat was a little drier than I'd like it to be. It made the texture more rubbery, which in turn made the pork harder to eat. This could have also prevented the pork from having a juicy flavor that I was looking for. I believe Queen House deserves a resounding 4/5 for this experience. The staff were kind, welcoming, and attentive, which among other things is one of the most compelling reasons to come and give them a try! The portion size was pretty good for this caliber of restaurant, and with good quality and taste as well. During peak meal times, I wouldn't doubt that they'd have lines to eat there. I bet they have some 5 star worthy items on their menu, some that I'll be looking forward to try in the near future! Great job Queen House and staff! read more

a very SOLID choice for a taiwanese restaurant. my mom LOVES this place for its portions and selection and price. what we got: popcorn chicken (5/5): came out super hot and well seasoned (not too salty). it was also crispy and had a huge portion. the chicken pieces were quite big actually and the breading was thin and crispy! three cup tofu (5/5): good choice for vegetarians that still want a classic dish. i love tofu and the basil taste was super strong. the tofu itself was super soft inside and the outside was well seasoned. general tso's chicken (5/5): it was crispy when it came out but even after soaking in the sauce, it still had a pretty nice texture! (my sister loves this) fried tofu (5/5): you HAVE TO GET THIS. it is so good. it is just standard deep fried tofu but it is WELL FRIED and the tofu was super soft. vegetarian chao ma mian (4/5): i love napa cabbage personally which is why i liked the dish but the soup itself tasted like the bull head vegetarian bbq sauce. however, this is the vegetarian version that we requested and not the regular chao ma mian. so for the vegetarian version, its pretty good! dried sauteed string beans (5/5): REALLY GOOD and basically had that wok hey kind taste. the sauce itself was SO GOOD and i loved it with rice! highly recommend if you want to get a taste of taiwanese cuisine! read more

Their 3 cup chicken is a standout dish here and we've been here a few times just to have it. Just writing this, I am craving it again if that tells you anything about how good the dish is! It seems like they own or at least partner with the boba place next door and you get a $1 discount on drinks when you order off the menu (don't go nextdoor to order separately, not that I'd know from experience or anything ). We definitely need to come back and try some more dishes to be sure but this is in our rotation of restaurants now just for that dish. If they only put more veggies...not just one veggie. Even if they put Onion it would have been fine. So for the value, not a good value since not enough shrimp neither. Mixed Vegetable Noodle Soup I liked the mixed vegetable soup but wouldn't order again because the noodles weren't thin like I wanted (tasted more like udon noodles or maybe they were) and the broth was mediocre and super super super greasy 2.
