I love this little bar! Just as the name suggests, its decorations and interior design are supposed to replicate an old captainship - think laminated wood furnishings and a bar that opens to the patio. The drinks are named accordingly - Navy Strength Old Fashioned (very strong, comes with one of those new age single large icecube), Solstice G&T (a delicious and unique combination of gin, tonic, elderberry, allspice). The bartenders are wonderful and attentive and are open to making a drink to your liking. I'm not sure if it's on their secret menu, but one of the bartenders made me a coffee infused alcohol beverage (rum perhaps?) which may sound wrong but it was delightfully balanced and energizing. 1980s music playing, warm Saturday night, patio string lights, strong good drinks, attentive bartenders - the Queen Mary Tavern definitely deserves a spot on your list of Wicker Park bars to visit. read more

Great addition to the neighborhood. Couldn't be happier that this place opened. It's more of an "adult" bar versus a the post college bar scene that tends to keep growing on Division street. The atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming, makes you want to hole up and have a few martinis. I had the "Albatross" cocktail (at least I think that was the name)...and husband had an old fashioned. Keeping in mind what they've set out to accomplish, it's virtually perfect. 2 Visits: - First Time, Mon. 3/14/16 pre-dinner: Not crowded at all, as I anticipated at 7pm on a Monday. My objective was to try at least 1 of the cocktails purely on the merits of the drink, vibe +/- notwithstanding. I wanted a gin cocktail in the aperitif mold, opted for the citrusy top left option ("The Admiralty", they all have naval/nautical names, remembering orders off ingredient/flavor seems more practical than trying to memorize the name). Bartender gets to it, freshly made, served w/in 2 minutes. This was the best drink I've had in Chicago in approximately 1 yr. It was just so spot-on w/ regard to the cleanliness of the citrus liqueur and the sweetness properly muted by the gin. Oh the cruel irony of what happened as I was 2/3's of the way through! Barback/co-tender asks what I think. I tell him how great it was. He informs me this was the last night of the drink menu in its current form. All that was staying was the Navy Strength Old Fashioned! Rather than belabor my pending misery of wanting this no-longer-available drink again, I decided I would comeback for the new menu ASAP. - Second Time, Sat. 3/19/16 post-dinner: Crowded, but not waiting/stuffy crowded. Date & I able to stand at the bar comfortably (front-half, back part of the bar is like a thin table w/ members of groups face-to-face). New menu has plenty to choose from. I had the whiskey drink w/ strawberry flavors on the rocks, date had a cosmo-colored gin drink up. Both were executed as good as one could hope. Neither possessed the je ne sais quoi of my first visit, but both are in the top 1-2% of menu listed cocktails you could order in the city. Queen Mary has done their part to make me a regular, it's on me to get back as frequently as possible now! read more

As a fairly masculine guy who happens to be gay, I have a natural aversion to bars with "Queen" in the name. But the back story to this place is so good, it's right near my place,, and the concept is similar to their "Sportsman's Club" bar on Western Avenue, which I love, so I was looking forward to trying it. The interior is great. Mostly original, but kind of steampunk-meets-old-school-division-street. Fairly authentic (except for the men's room. No bar in Chicago ever had knotty pine paneling in a mens room. They even have it on the ceiling, yikes.) The staff was friendly, and they even have table service, and take credit cards. Service was very good, in spite of the place being packed. Nice vibe. And no big screen TVs, thankfully. The cocktail menu looks fantastic on paper, with a lot of unique and interesting ingredients. Unfortunately, we did not find the cocktails to be very good. We tried 3 different ones, and none of them was better than just okay. Drinks are served in stemware, and tall glasses, while I always prefer the look and feel of rocks glasses. I would also say their nautical theme seems a bit forced, given our Chicago location. I really hope they can improve the drinks, cause I really want to love this place. In the meantime, I prefer the Sportsman. Update, July 2016: Returned and found a new cocktail menu and much improved drinks. I ordered the "Navy Strength Old Fashioned", served in a rocks glass with a giant crystal clear ice cube. Very nice. I've upped my rating to 4 stars from 3. Not 5, because for $12, I think there could be a little more volume in the drinks. Also I'm still not a fan of the giant crown hanging above the entrance. read more

One of my favorite bars in Ukrainian Village. It was actually recommended to us from the bartender over at Gold Star bar and so we went to check it out one night. It did not disappoint. The staff were really kind and made every cocktail with care, and you can tell: the cocktails are masterful. Heisler Hospitality strikes again with a tribute to Britannia in the form of a dark British Navy themed bar just down the street from Pub Royale. We were all too full from British-Indian dinner to investigate the seafood offerings but drinks were enjoyed and three spicy dark truffles were ordered and presented in a beautiful, pristine seashell on a bed of ice. I was a few drinks too many in to recall the particular cocktails ordered with accuracy, but all were delicious and diverse. Queen Mary Tavern was offering West and East Coast oysters that night and also boasts an impressive selection of fine sipping rums. Our bartender was super-friendly and happy to talk shop and educate us on our selections. Will have to revisit and have dinner. read more

I came here Saturday night for a drink with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday. I really enjoyed the ambiance and we were lucky enough to get a table and be able to truly soak it in. The bar tender could have been a little bit more helpful, it was loud and I hadn't received a menu so I asked him what he recommended and he just sort of shrugged and handed me the menu. Maybe it's just me but I tend to appreciate when the bar tenders or mixologists, in this case, offer up some help by asking what I like and then making a suggestion. Either way, its a great spot, I just wish it were a little bit bigger so we could come back with a larger group! read more

Queen Mary is cavernous and feels like a ship. All but one cocktails on their menu has dark liquors. I'm not a fan but they were able to make me a dirty Tito's martinis so that'll do! The ambiance was cool but what really stole the show (few martinis in, of course) was the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It had pumpernickel bread with a sharp white cheddar. To die for, seriously. They also have a $1 oysters and $6 classic martinis special running (Sunday and Monday 5-7 pm). The martinis are half-size, though. I will be back for more of that grilled cheese and soup. read more

This is a great bar. The cocktail selection is good, although I wish they had more gin/vodka based cocktails. I get that it's winter, but I am just not a fan of dark liquors and they don't have much selection of fruity or tart cocktails. (I don't need something super sweet, but I just don't drink much whiskey or run.). The staff is friendly and just the right level of attentive, and the ambience is great. Four friends and I came here for a girls' night out and we had a great experience. I would give it 5 stars were it not for one thing--the ladies' bathroom has BAR SOAP. My friends went in the mens' room and they had a pump, so I don't see why there's a grimey bar in the ladies' room. I'm sorry, but bar soap in a bar is GROSS. I am not about to rub my hands on a bar of soap that someone has smeared god knows what on. read more

I came here on a warm summer day, but want to come back on a bone chilling cold winter day to enjoy the coziness of this great little bar. Like others have said, nautical theme, but very subtle. My only complaint would be the lack of real wine glasses; wine is served in regular cocktail glasses, which I'm not crazy about. But the cocktail and wine list was good, service friendly, and the interior great. I love the ambiance of this spot. Great booths, neat decor. Service was really solid, accommodating and not pretentious. The drinks were awesome. $12 each, so not cheap but about where you would expect for this high standard. I got the Navy Strength Old Fashion which was really good and the Heart of Oak, which was one of the best things to pass these lips. My buddies got the Admiralty and Nor'easter and they were thoroughly enjoyed. The nosh is good as well. Fish dip was good, though not something I would get every time but the sourdough bread was just what we needed to soak up. $2 for the bread, great deal. A problem I find with these types of high end cocktail bars is that you want to chill but another cocktail might be too much and too expensive.. this place has $4 Coors heavies in the lil stout bottle, so we had a few of these and switched back to the high octane... twas a perfect eve! Read about this place in the Redeye, and I work right around here so I had to check it out. Its the bottom floor of an older building, its got a rustic look. You prb wouldn't think it was a bar walking past it , but I think that might be what they are trying to go for. Once you step in, theres a long curtain, which you will have to go through to get inside. As soon as you walk in, its like you traveled back in time. The place looks like an old speakeasy, with its classic wooden bar, dim lighting, and select bottles on the shelves. The bartender told me this place focuses on Gin and Rum, the drinks of the sailors back in the day. Tried the Navy Strength Ol Fashioned, was a little disappointed. It was a little bitter for my taste but I must admit I am not a Gin guy. The Clove Hitch was a little more up my alley. Overall this spot is not for everyone but I must say it is unique and is an experience. Its a low key quiet place to relax and enjoy special cocktails! read more

Do you often get together with your seafarthing mates of old looking to tell tales of the high seas while complaining about the changing weather patterns due to your bad hip joints or wooden leg?? Well this is the perfect place for you. Not shy to any maritime stories Queen Mary boats a squall of old sailing traditions and drinks. Just as the seas are shore to splash you around the cabin here you can feel comfortable swaying on either side of the bar. I even woke up in the basement to a man with an eye patch throwing a bucket of water on me. Not the first or last time that will happen. My favorite event here (many nautical events check your nautical calendar) is on April 28th celebrating the Mutiny on the HMS Bounty that took place in 1789 when good ol Fletcher Christian and his mutineers kicked captain Wiliam Bligh and 8 of his mates off the boat for good. Typical drinking games will include, Who's Got My Breadfruit, Spin the ship wheel shot, and Walk the plank which is my personal favorite involving a kitty pool, 18 gallons of Captain Morgan Rum, and a paintball gun. read more

Here is an example of a great bar being really shitty, myself and three of my friends were in town for a birthday celebration and we could not help but love this bar. Until we took a closer look at our tabs... we ordered 4 shots for a birthday girl and had two tabs open we were each charged for 4 shots. 32 dollar charge on each tab as opposed to 16 on each. Between that and the female bartenders less that stellar attitude I would not recommend this place, seem as they enjoy taking advantage of good people from out of town.
