I've been to a lot of mechanics throughout Lawrence and Kansas City area based on recommendations of friends the past 15 years. This time I used Yelp and found the place I'll probably be most comfortable using over the next 15 years. As the previous yelpers mentioned, the owner Joe, takes time to listen to the customer and asks relevant questions to get to the bottom of the problem. This helps them save time/labor and save you money when they actually look into the car because they've already pinpointed the problem area. From there they take you in the garage and show you exactly what is causing the problem, explain how the part works that is affected and let you see for yourself what needs to be done or replaced. Probably the most trustworthy place I've ever been. I then ended up having them look at a few cars I was interested in buying as part of their pre-purchase inspection package. Joe gave a detailed write-up of what each car either needed or was going to need in the near future. That helped a ton in negotiating with the seller and I got a great car at an amazing deal. I am so happy and grateful to have found my new Auto Service Shop. When I moved to the Kansas City area from Topeka a year ago, I left behind an auto shop that I thought I could never replace. They were friendly, honest, timely, and reliable. In fact, I have driven to Topeka to have my car worked on a couple of times, because I didn't want to take my chances on a shop in Kansas City. Last week, my car would not start. I got it jumped and drove it home. It would not start the next morning. I did an online search for auto shops in my area. When I read the reviews for Quest Auto Service, it was as though the reviewers were talking about my auto shop in Topeka that I love so much. I called and talked to Joe. He told me that when I got it jumped I could drive it straight there and they would take a look at it. Later, I called again to see if he had a recommendation for a company who would come out and jump my car. Both times that I called, Joe was very friendly and didn't make me feel as though I was bothering him or that he was in a rush to get off the phone. When I got my car to the shop, Joe knew immediately who I was and greeted me by name. He had my car inside within 2 minutes of me getting there and told me what the issue was within 10 minutes. While my car was being taken care of, I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Joe about his business. After a related series of disappointing visits to a Mazda Dealership Service dept., I decided to take my car to a different shop. Thanks to a review on Yelp I made an appointment at Quest. They saw my car right away, took time to listen to my description of symptoms and explained the diagnosis in detail - including a visual look. In addition, before I left the shop, the mechanic rode with me in the car to ensure that the noises I heard were in fact gone. When one of the noises persisted, they took it back into the garage, found the problem and fixed it on the spot. Quest Auto is a local treasure. Joe is helpful & friendly, and remembers the phone conversation you had last week when you walk in the door. He'll tell you what needs to be done, what you can put off, and how long you are likely to be able to safely put it off. He'll explain why a needed procedure is relatively expensive ("the fuel filter is actually located inside the gas tank, so we need to replace the ring & gasket too any time we change it,") but he won't dumb it down in a condescending way. He'll give you a fair price, call you back promptly when he says he will, and will have the work done in a timely way. He will have someone give you a lift to & from your work or home if it's reasonably local, should you need that. Good service is always great -- but good, honest, timely service from an auto shop to a single woman is something that makes me want to jump up & dance with joy. Back in Sept of 2012, my brakes had been making some funky thumping noises, coupled with some odd "shimmying" of the steering wheel when braking, and that made me seriously uncomfortable, so I figured it was time. :) Tired of dealing with the run-around from the Acura dealership (inflated rates, pressure to have maintenance done that could actually wait, etc.), I found Quest Auto Service via Yelp and decided to call and get quotes on new brakes and alignment. I was honest with Joe and told him that I didn't know much about brake pads (if I even needed two or four - ha!) and he was very kind and explained everything and what my options would be, but not in a condescending way. When I dropped my car off the next morning for service, he was really nice and down-to-earth. They offered to give me a ride to work (but my mom had already arranged to meet me, so that wasn't needed - but a great option for the future). He called a few hours later to tell me what they had found and recommended doing, and that I actually didn't need to replace two of the four brake pads -- they still had some life left. I was impressed by this because, had they been a "shady" shop, they could have just said that all four needed replacement and replaced all four and I never would have known the difference. When I got there to pick up my car, he took me into the shop to take a look at the brake pads they'd removed. I thought this was a nice, personal touch (although it didn't really mean much to me because I don't know what they are supposed to look like either way!). Joe is really kind and treated me like a friend, with respect. I haven't had any issues afterward and I am satisfied with the service and the rates - way cheaper than the Acura dealership! Based on my experience, I would say you can trust that Quest will treat you well and you'll be happy with the end result. I've had many experiences with Auto Repair shops over the years and I must say this was one of the best experiences to date. They were very knowledgeable and informative about our vehicle's "Check Engine" light. I was happy to see a Code of Ethics posted in the waiting area, something I've never seen at the chain places. I would highly recommend Quest Auto Service. Several weeks ago I was in Overland Park for the night, halfway through a 16 hour drive. My car's engine malfunction light had come on outside of Kansas City. My husband found Quest Auto Service online and next morning I took my car in, hoping that they could get me back on the road for the rest of my trip. It was a Saturday morning of Spring Break and they were very busy. Joe, the owner, was very kind in explaining that they were booked for the day. And yet they looked at my car's engine, ran a diagnostic, found a leaky valve and did an oil change. Joe gave me a printout of routine maintenance that my car needed. Joe always takes care of us and lets us know what the immediate needs are vs. what can wait; what we should splurge on and where we can save. I trust his opinion, and he's never steered me wrong. He even helped us out of a jam after my car needed $2k+ of work done on it - he really went out of his way to help us finance the bill. I recommend him and his team to everyone I can. As a younger female, I've had a lot of bad experiences at auto shops with employees being dismissive, condescending, disrespectful, etc. But these guys have never made me feel any less valuable or less intelligent than any other customer. These guys are class acts. It's tough to be an auto service shop for 30 years and not piss a couple people off along the way, but they seem to have pulled it off. Long story short, I called these guys for a second estimate to repair a company vehicle. Everyone I spoke with, especially Joe (owner operator) were great to work with. As busy as I'm sure they are, Joe still took the time to discuss the situation with me and answer my questions. Giving this type of quality service is hard to do when you're busy... I know! As it turns out, (even though Joe's quote was better), we ended up having the work done at the shop that already had the car. Kinda funny that I'm posting a review about an auto service place where I've never had my car worked on... ... but the kind of attentive service and effort I got from Joe on the phone, I know he would do a great job. They set the bar and then exceed all expectations! My car was making a noise that I put off until I (lazy I know) decided to do something about. I called them first thing in the morning and explained to them the situation and the told me to bring it and drop it off for them to work in. I dropped off around 8, to an incredibly and overwhelmed and busy shop. With at least 10 cars in front of me I wasn't expecting to hear from them for at least a day; the owner called at 12:30! Whenever anything changed with the status of the car, price, etc the owner called me himself, every time. Every time the owner called he took the time to thoroughly explain the process and parts, and answered all my questions. My car was done by 5, the same day! I have been hunting for a new (to me) car for the last couple of weeks. Unless it is from a family member or close friend I do not buy a used car without having it thoroughly inspected by a non biased third party professional. I have a few features that the car I pick must have, which complicated the search. I probably called Joe and rescheduled this inspection at least 8 times. Joe never gave me any trouble about it at all, and even spent time with me on the phone answering questions and giving advise about what to stay away from, so I wasn't bringing a bunch of different cars in for the inspection. He acknowledged that the rescheduling and changing of plans for pre-purchase inspection is very normal and not unreasonable. I brought a Honda Accord in today and his tech gave it a thorough inspection, followed by him looking at noted parts personally. Given what Joe thought was an appropriate offer for me to make on the car with what it should have done before to long and what the seller was dead set on getting, I did not buy this car. I will be brining the next possible vehicle to Quest as well. They are friendly and Joe is the type of business owner who is also out on the shop floor and staying in the know about how things are going. He is also the type that you could trust with your life to be honest about what repairs need to be done ASAP and what should be done in the near future, without tacking on extra work to increase your bill. read more

We had a great mechanic for years at a Midas until one day we went in and he was gone. We were told he retired or that he went to work elsewhere. We continued to go to Midas but their work went downhill quickly so we avoided the mechanic altogether aside from oil changes. Needed maintenance backed up on our 3 cars. I turned to Yelp and saw all the great reviews of Quest. It is hard to try a new mechanic because you are trusting them with a large asset and your transportation to work! We took our son's old beater car and they got it fixed and ready to go. So, we took our other 2 cars there too. They are extremely honest--MOST important.
