My family has four cars, including older cars for my kids. I only have basic knowledge of cars so I am always concerned that a mechanic could rip me off. Finding Quest and its owner, Joe, has been a huge relief. There have been times Joe could have charged me big fees for things I really didn't need and I would have paid them, but he advised me it would not be wise. I took my son's old car in and Joe told me we could spend $2000 and keep it running another year or just junk it. He advised me to junk it. My truck was way over due for an oil change and had some electrical issues. I scheduled to bring it in first thing in the morning and picked it up after work. The front desk guys communicated with me how diagnostic services would work, gave me firm quotes for significant items, and fixed the requested items as we talked about. I came from out of town to overland park to purchase a car and used these guys to do the pre-purchase inspection. I picked them because they had good ratings on yelp and google reviews. Couldn't be any happier. They did an excellent job. Most shops do very lousy pre-purchase inspections. They lifted the car and the owner took me inside the shop and showed me all the issues personally, rather than just giving me a report at the end. They even checked things like heating, which most other places neglect to do. Owner seems to be very knowledgeable in what he does. Only negative point I have is when I asked the price before the inspection they told me it would be $40+tax, but at the end it was $40+tax+another $8.50 as a shop fee. Not a big deal, but I wish they would have told it to me earlier. I'll gladly pay the extra $8.50 for a knowledgeable honest mechanic. read more

Update on review below: Joe (owner) contacted me after this review was posted and refunded the money. I really appreciated his professionalism in the situation and have changed my rating from 1 star to 3 stars. Original review: If I had written this review before today, I would have given Quest a significantly higher rating. I had my wheel bearings replaced (in desperate need) and was very happy with customer service (cost was around $650). Immediately after I got the car back, I noticed a "humming or rubbing" and could feel a vibration in my feet. We took the car back in immediately the next day. I was told that my car was so loud before (from the bad wheel bearings), this noise had probably always been there. (My car is a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix with 150,000 miles and has had extremely little problems overall.) I disagreed with this statement but he did not charge me to look at it, and assured me there was "absolutely no safety concern". After traveling to another state the next day (several hours), I took the car in to my extended family's mechanic because the humming still concerned me. It had not gotten any worse, but it just felt off. Our family mechanic immediately found the wheel bearing that had just been installed was bad. Quest had the wheel bearing under warranty (we contacted them after learning this information), so my family mechanic installed a new bearing and only charged us for labor and diagnostics (about $90 and $45 respectively). Quest assured us (through phone communication) that they would reimburse us for the costs. Immediately the humming/rubbing sound was gone. Our mechanic also mentioned that this could have been a HUGE safety issue had we not gotten it fixed. When my husband took the bill into Quest as agreed upon, he was told he would only be reimbursed for the labor portion ($90) because that was covered under warranty. The owner was adamant about not reimbursing the remaining money ($45) even though his company installed the wheel bearing and didn't find the issue when we gave him a chance to fix it. My husband and I felt like the agreement had been to pay all costs related to the wheel bearing. Quest lost our business over $45. I feel as though my concerns were not taken seriously, and I feel as though I can not trust what this shop has to say (specifically about safety concerns). I felt I gave them adequate opportunities to right the situation (especially after spending a significant amount of money), but I would not recommend this shop and will not return. read more

Drove in from Colorado last night, car would not start this morning called Joe at Quest, gave me a tow company that was at my car in 15min and Joe got me in on busy Saturday morning with no appt. repaired our car in less then two hours and VERY reasonable plus pointed out times for me to address when back in Colorado. They were able to repair my truck the same day I brought it in so I could get back on the road. Price seemed reasonable and assessment honest. I even asked about another service and Mike told me it wasn't necessary. They let me bring my ferret in her travel crate into the waiting room. I went to Quest because of the great Yelp reviews, and I'm so happy I did. When I described my car's problem over the phone, Joe was very upfront about how much time (and money) would be involved with the diagnostics, and he even made sure that I understood that because it's an intermittent problem, they might not be able to find the cause with certainty. He reiterated that when I brought the car in, which I appreciated. Here was someone who wasn't going to make promises the shop couldn't fulfill. I had to wait about an hour for my ride to pick me up, and while I was waiting someone came in to get his car fixed based on a recommendation by his father. It was reassuring to hear about another happy customer. They were able to find the cause of my problem and fix it, showed me two belts that had rotted (of course I had them replaced), replace the air filter, and do an oil change in much less time -- and for much less money -- than I expected. I will be going to Quest whenever my car needs anything. It was such a great experience compared to the gouging I've come to expect at the dealership. read more

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR CAR!! BEWARE!!!! Looking for as much money out of me as he could get. Do not recommend. I had 250k plus on my Toyota 4Runner. Took it in for regular oil changes and always had other fluids checked when I lived in my home town. I moved, and work in Overland Park now. Never had any issues with the car. Anyone with a Toyota, and in particular, a 4runner can attest to the reliability. I needed an oil change and I figured a coolant exchange, as I noticed there was gunk in my reservoir.. This place had good reviews and it was close to work. I figured I had a great mechanic on my hands, but I was called 4 or 5 times throughout the day. I was told I needed to replace my air filter, I did, needed to replace my wipers, I did. I needed to replace the exhaust, which I declined given the mileage on the car, the utter uselessness of the repair, and the cost of it. Also, he offered me 4 tires that I bought for 250 dollars less elsewhere , labor included! Back to his money grubbing... His words were " did you notice how loud your car was running?" It was not running loud. No louder than any other car, it was fine. My car was great before this place. My car would have ran at least another 100,000 miles if I would have just drained, then added coolant and done the oil changes myself. At least 25,000 no attention paid to it! I just didn't have the time. I'm kicking myself! For trusting this place and for not doing things myself. Simple maintenance is all I wanted.. Less than a week later, and maybe 250 miles, my car over heated. With No indication! My gauges were normal. My thermostat was "great" according to this guy. I had even mentioned I thought my car may have been running too hot at times, regardless of what the gauges read, because I am not auto-illiterate. I wanted to be sure that it was ok. Guess it wasn't? And/or Guess I was right. This guy wants whatever he can get out of people. He'll try to sell you on something and if you don't buy, beware! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. I hate to think that someone would sabotage something intentionally but it's not out of the question, here. I didn't spend enough with him. I will forever think twice about taking my car anywhere that I don't personally know the mechanic because of this place. I wouldn't even give it one star if I could. I had my rear break's (pad's and rotors done at Quest with 71,000 miles). Now with 102,000 miles I'm told I need to have them done again at a cost of $410.00. At issue is the fact that the first set lasted for 71,000 miles and the second set ONLY lasted 31,000 ! In checking around, (NTB quoted $374 and Ace Streering Brake quoted $275), other auto shop's tell me if the first set lasted 71,000 miles, the second set if the same quality is used (ceramic pads I checked with every one)should go for at least 45K to 55K. I had the front brakes done at 97,000 miles atQuest again and nothing was said about the rear Quest say's it's how you drive, RIGHT ! I have to believe it's the quality of the pad's they use ! Check prices before you service your vehicle at Quest! Thinking they would stand behind the work or at least charge what other reputable shops charge didn't work for me! BUYER BEWARE JT read more

Brought car in to have the rear brake shoes replaced (never had them done ). Guy called and said no work was necessary, Pads still had 50 percent life left. Can't rate any work, but i appreciated the honesty from them. Place seemed pretty busy on a friday, glad they made time to squeeze me in. I hate Quest Auto Service. I went there to get a quote about an engine oil leak in my car and was quoted $600 to fix the engine camshaft. He said the shaft and timing belt needed to be replaced because of the leak. I went to another shop for a quote and the said the same thing. Then I went to A&V Transmission and Complete Auto Care and they told me it was the valve cover gasket and was only gonna charge me $80 bucks! Junior the mechanic showed me why it was the gasket and not the shaft. Quest is either crooked or incompetent and I believe it is the former. Do NOT trust Quest. I don't know why the other reviewers believe they are trust worthy because they are Nice. They were Nice to me too but would have lost $600. Do NOT TRUST Quest. I don't think the other reviewers shopped around. Go to A&V for true honesty and great work. read more

My son brought his car in for an antifreeze/overheating issue. After a $69.00 diagnostic they stated that he had a blown head gasket and the engine had to be replace at $2500.00. Here is a basic head gasket tutor. Car wouldn't keep antifreeze in it (boiling out and physically leaking.) not a head gasket problem. No oil in the radiator, no water in the engine oil, no smoking out the exhaust with lots of white smoke. The oil and water don't looks like chocolate milk shake in the engine or radiator. None of this was happening. Granted Dexcool antifreeze was looking nasty, but that is the nature of that antifreeze when old. 1st year mechanic would have known the difference. Be aware of these folks. read more

They got everything I needed done in a reasonable amount of time, prices were definitely fair, and Joe, the manager, made sure that I knew everything that was going on. He took me out and showed me himself what issues were going on with my car, told me what he would recommend fixing today, what could be put off for a little bit, and safety issues regarding my car troubles. They were very knowledgeable and professional and advised me throughout the process as to what tests and repairs should and should not be done from a necessity and cost standpoint. Had timing belt fixed at Quest. Joe was pleasant, thorough and knowledgable. Got the work done promptly. After picking up the car and starting it, I heard a loud clanging engine noise for 20 seconds, then the noise subsided. I'm the original owner of the car and never heard that noise before. Here's what bothered me. Joe mentioned other things the car needed while I was paying but never commented about hearing the loud engine noise. I asked him about the noise when I got home and he said the tech and he had heard it in the garage and thought it could be normal for my car. Then he mentioned It could be low oil pressure during a cold start. It was 60 degrees. He seemed to be busy and I felt like he was brushing off my concern. I expected him to say to bring it back and they'd check it out but that didn't happen. I've had the car a week and haven't heard the noise return. I hope everything turns out ok. If so, I'll give them another chance. read more

I am unbelievably disappointed with this place. About two months ago by car broke down about a block from this shop, so it was my only option to take it to the this place because it was closest and I wouldn't have to pay for a tow truck. They told me I needed about $1500 worth of repairs just to make sure we fixed the problem. I called my hometown mechanic that I really trust and he told me that the most expensive repair they told me I needed done would not be causing this problem. So I had them do a portion of the repairs they recommended, paid $250 and I got the $1250 repair done at another shop that only charged me $650. That was the first sign that this place overcharges on a ridiculous scale. A month later the problem starts again. I call Quest Auto and they tell me to bring it back it. They told me that the after market part they put in tends to be rejected by my car so they recommended putting in one from the manufacturer and putting in another part that goes with this already replaced part because they go hand in hand. Why this wasn't recommended to me before, I don't know. I asked them "Is there any other possible cause for this issue?" and they specifically said no this makes the most sense. I said fine, replace both parts (they only charged me for the second new part and the labor since I already paid for the first one to be replaced. I appreciate that) I come in to pick it up Tuesday morning and they tell me they've driven it around and it is working great. I say fantastic, pay $125, and I drive it to work. The same problem happened again on my drive to work! I immediately call them and say the problem is still happening. They don't apologize, they just say bring it back in. I bring it in later that week and they call and tell me they found a crack in this completely obscure part that they have not mentioned to me before, however, it made sense that it could be causing the problem. They replaced it, I came and pick it up, pay $75, drive it to work and the problem happens again only now it seems worse. I have now paid them $450 to replace three different parts (not to mention a $10.50 shop fee every single time. Over $30 total to them for each time they tell me to bring it back in to fix the exact same problem!) and the problem is still not fixed!! I feel like they've just taken advantage of me and are trying to squeeze me for every penny I've got before they actually fix the problem. I find it very hard to believe that these men who appear to have been in the business for over 25 years can't figure out this small issue. I will definitely not be going back to them and I do not recommend them to anyone. They are very nice and personable, but what good is a friendly mechanic if he can't fix your car? read more

I was in Kansas from out of town. We traveled from Wisconsin on some questionable tires. Once in town, my wife and I decide, we need new tires. We stop by Quest Auto Service. Once the guys look at the tires, it was determined that they were worse than we first thought. After talking with Joe, the manager and later to find out, the owner, he helped to determine what tire would work best for us and our driving situation. But the mess was still not over. Once the guy investigated further, it was also determined that the brakes and rotors were in bad shape. Joe worked up a price to do the tire, front-end alignment, brakes, and rotors all around. When your 600 miles away from home, it's hard to know if your working with a reputable and honest mechanic. His price was both fair and honest. He gave us options. He told us what he can do, what we should do and what we could wait to do. I felt good having them do the work. He and his guys did everything. When you have to travel back home another 600 miles, you don't want to get stuck somewhere on the side of the road. I was very please with the work the guys at Quest auto did. They all were honest and polite. If you ever find yourself in Kansas with vehicle problems, stop by Quest Auto and have Joe and the guy take care of your troubles.
