It's a brilliant find for an out of towner to get a good product and unexpectedly good conversation out of a spur of the moment decision to pass up another place. Bailey and Elizabeth were wonderful to chat with quickly passing my one hour metered parking. Took a bag of the Blacksmith beans home which I do not regret! Quills is the coffee shop that Indy, despite it's own ignorance, has desperately needed. Simply put, the quality of the espresso and coffee, in addition to the superb craftsmanship of knowledgeable baristas, makes this place literally light years ahead of other local competitors. The baristas are all nice and quirky enough that you'll enjoy talking to them, but not so quirky you want to punch them on the face. I find this to be a paradox that plagues many other places... To make things even better, the wifi actually works routinely and is super quick. Since most people don't know about it yet, there are always tables with outlets available to do work. I'm going to try very hard not to hate on Indianapolis in this review. I will try my best. I'm sorry if some hate leaks through. I was stuck in Indianpolis for five days while my wife attended a conference. I'm sorry, I shouldn't say stuck. Stuck is a thing people who don't like a place say, and I said I wouldn't hate on Indy. I wasn't stuck, I was . . . ummmm . . . suspended. "Suspended" doesn't make sense. That's how I felt, emotionally, but it doesn't hit the nail on the head. Fuck it. I'm going to be honest. I lost five days of my life in Indianpolis recently. There we go. It's off my chest. I don't know why the conference was in Indianapolis. I don't. It's a butthole of a city. It doesn't deserve the appellation of "city." It is a bland, generic town. The monuments are generic. The buildings are generic. The restaurants and bars are generic. I just felt overwhelmed with mediocrity. I the thing is, it's probably my own fault, because I was swaddled. . . Too kind. Restrained? Warmer. I was placed in the four-point restraints of the downtown district. The downtown area is a soulless district filled with expensive chain restaurant after expensive chain restaurant and alternating neo-classical and brutalist government structures. It's designed like a city planner got his degree by playing the Sims. It's terrible. To relieve the spiritual vacuum of the stretch of city between the Marriott, I relied on good ol' Yelp to help me. Yelp recommended Quills. Quills was great. It didn't lack soul. The baristador was playing some dank jams. Vulfpeck if I remember. Conversation was lively. Students wandering in and out. And good coffee. I was satisfied. After three days in downtown, I felt like I'd entered a tiny Lothlorien. A kindly place with a soul surrounded by a desolate plane of rock and stone. I hope the elf lord running this joint doesn't lose his ring of power. Indiana should not give up hope. There's some good in this world. And it's worth fighting for. read more

In fact, Quills roasts their own coffee in New Albany, Indiana. It's nice to know I'm supporting a local Hoosier business. The house coffee on drip is a coffee blend, called Inkwell. It includes beans from Guatemala, Peru, and Columbia. This medium-roasted coffee has a balanced and smooth flavor. Since the beans come from Central America, the flavor is bright with tones of berry and vanilla. I had about 5 cups that afternoon. Quills is passionate about their coffee and offer several single origin roasts from Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Equador and Rwanda. I got a matcha latte and it was perfect, plus the atmosphere was perfect for working during my lunch break. Coffee! I ran through here quickly because I had somewhere to be. The baristas were super friendly and interested in helping me find a beverage from their menu. I went with a normal iced coffee with sugar free syrup and half and half. First of all, the inside is really chill. Very quiet, most likely a perfect place to study or just read a book. Parking was rough, but thankfully I ran in and out pretty quickly without needing to park. They had more sugar free syrups than my main coffee joint which was much appreciated. Due to dietary restrictions, my choices are usually pretty limited so I liked having more options. I usually get heavy cream in my coffee but sadly they did not carry it. I ordered the chai tea latte and I enjoyed it, the latte art was awesome and the foam on top was delicious! The baristas were so friendly and helpful, I was very impressed by how kind they were! The only thing that may be bothersome is if you're in the non-study-room area it can be a bit loud because the coffee shop is located in the lobby of an apartment building so there a bit of coming and going and chatter but it didn't bother me, it felt like a lively place! Man, this place is...interesting. It has an unusual back alley location, hiding in the corner of an apartment lobby / parking deck. Such a cute little nook that once inside is both confusing and intriguing. The location is a little out of the way, as it isn't right on the canal or Senate St, but it's not a far walk. Also, the food selection is a bit lacking. It won't be something that you just drive by and spot, which is something I actually enjoy about it. It's quite literally a little buried treasure. The shop is essentially located below the apartments of 9 On Canal. The coffee is fantastic and they offer an array of sourced coffee and roasts to choose from. Farm to cup is no lie about this company. They go through great lengths to present you with select-grade coffees that taste like some I've never had before. The staff is super polite and friendly and the space here is a coffee lovers dream. It's wide, very hip and very welcoming. This place seriously makes me want to come here, grab a cup of joe, punch out some work or relax and just enjoy the scenery.
