I was in Louisville for a few days for work and when I first got in it was too early for me to check-in to my hotel. After a quick search on Yelp I found this Guills location off Baxter Ave. I headed straight over and found free street parking out front. The space inside was like that of an old home. It was comfy, had its own charm. They also had many, many tables and solid wifi. It was great for getting some work done. I ordered a vanilla latte and found a spot to plug in at. Yes, they had plenty of electrical outlets to juice up your devices. During my visit someone came into the coffee shop that was clearly having some mental health problems, as she was screaming and yelling. While I did have a call scheduled so I had to leave to take it, I had to give it up to one of the ladies behind the counter. She was so patient and friendly with this person, despite how much of a ruckus they were making. The compassion and empathy of this staff member was amazing. I'm sure that was a one-off, but it was a true testament to the staff they have on hand. read more

This is my first visit. Found it online being near the location in which I was driving. Walked in and liked the atmosphere right away. Calm, relaxed. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, helping me make a selection on both coffee and a bakery item. Both were very delicious. There is also plenty of seating and a strong Wi-Fi signal. The background soundtrack was absolutely fantastic. Definition of cool. If you're in the area, definitely stop in and sample a little something and hang out for a bit. I like it a lot. read more

The coffee and pasties were good but would not great, but the service was good and the low key, not so noisy, hip vibe are perfect for siting at a table and reading/working on a lap top or just hanging. read more

We found this place place on yelp. We parked on the street about a block away. This place is gorgeous inside. It's very asthmatically pleasing defensively picture worthy. When we ordered the staff here was super welcoming and helpful. I went with the barista's recommendation it was a coffee that was in season. My husband got a latte with maple syrup. Our coffees were amazing. This place is extremely relaxing at prices were reasonable. This place is everything you look in a coffee shop. Five stars across the board. read more

Quills is hands down the best coffee shop in Louisville. Their coffee is the best tasting and they have the coolest shops around. However, recently I bought an iced latte and I asked for a tiny amount of sweetener because I think the normal amount is too much. Then the barista asked me if i wanted it half-sweet or a quarter sweet. I said a quarter. I was still charged 60 cents for this. That is just insulting, and had they told me it would have been full price at the time of ordering I would have refused it. 60 cents for what, less than a teaspoon of syrup? Ridiculous. I can afford the amount but it is the principle of the thing. Have to remove a star for that. read more

Very cool coffee shop. Was thoroughly impressed. Baristas were very friendly. Playlist was heavy on Big Thief, which I personally loved. I tried their seasonal orange latte iced and loved it. Would order that again in a heartbeat. Lots of tables to work from. Parking could be an issue. read more

It's been six years since I wrote my review of Quills. It was one of my first reviews actually. Well, now almost 900 reviews and 40 check-ins lately, it's about time for a review update. And Quills is clearly five stars. This is such an awesome coffee shop to work, read or chat. It's not so loud that it's hard to concentrate. The power outlets are decently easy to find. And it's not so quiet to where you can't talk to a table mate. There is supreme people watching if you sit by the front windows that look out on Baxter Avenue. And it has a small but mighty drink menu. I've been opting for the chai latte lately. There are also a selection of pastries. I know I mentioned in my previous review that I wish there were more food options. That's still true. But I also respect perhaps why it does only carry sweets. The focus is on the drinks and doing what you came there for (i.e. to work, read or chat). You can usually find parking nearby, either in front of the shop or around the corner. This is just such a great coffee spot. I hope it sticks around for years to come. read more

The last time I visited this location was sometime in undergrad many years ago. We had parked just down the street and decided to grab something refreshing after eating lunch at Bunz. There were a lot more people than I would've thought already sitting in here. I saw a good number of folks on their computers, someone journaling, others talking over books, etc. We walked to the counter and browsed the tea list. The barista at the counter recommended the peach blossom sweetened so I got it iced. My friend got blueberry lavender coffee soda. It was an interesting, carbonated drink that was quite unique. We sat for a while and enjoyed the atmosphere. They played some great alternative music. They have community books you can write in which had drawings and all kinds of thoughts people had written down to share. It's an elongated room that looks like a former house. With a staircase to the side and lots of dark wood, it felt like an inviting space to sit and read without much disturbance. I can't wait to return! read more

Girlfriend and I stopped by to grab coffee to go while exploring the Highlands neighborhood. She had an iced Americano, and I had the single-origin drip, both of which were fantastic. Stopped in Quills on Baxter Sunday evening for a quick iced oat latte after a long day and before heading back to my hotel, because who drinks hotel coffee? Generally, not me. Great service, awesome coffee shop. I have been to their Nulu location before as well. If I lived in this area, this would totally be my go to, every morning and sometimes late afternoon coffee spot. Strong coffee. I had a latte and it made me so caffeinated! I also had a few sips of the drip coffee. Due to covid, they aren't doing pourovers at the moment. The drip coffee was surprisingly flavorful and acidic, reminiscent of Ethiopian coffee. There were also several baked goods from a local bakery. Cashier was friendly and knew the regulars and their orders. He gave me several recommendations and his personal favorites. There was socially distant seating and all the seats were taken! I like this Quills location as it is just a block or so away from my Shred 415 workout so I can easily grab coffee before or after. The medium roast coffee has great flavor and I have enjoyed a vanilla latte with oat milk. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The good: the Baxter location is just what I would envision for a local coffee shop - wood everywhere, lots of nooks for chatting and working, and baristas all sporting beanies. I ordered the seasonal latte, (maple spice), and it was ready in a matter of minutes. The less-than-good: although touted as maple spice, my latte albeit tasty, was neither particularly mapley or spicy. Also, it was lukewarm, rather than hot, and set me back $5 (which for 12oz seems a little steep). Great local spot, and a bit charming as well. The majority of coffee here is light roast and not too fruity/sour, pretty well balanced. Quill's also has a good selection of pastries and specialty coffee drinks you won't find anywhere else in the city (like a refreshing coffee & tonic that is perfectly made for the fall and winter seasons, seemingly with cinnamon and apple). My only complaint is that this might be the dustiest coffee shop I've ever been in. I could constantly see a warm of dust the entire time I was there, to the point that my eyes were irritated. I can't pick between the Baxter or Firehouse location as they're both superb, but they always serve quality drinks. I'd say the Baxter employees are more friendlier if I had to compare the two locations. Free street parkings are typically ample and it's a great atmosphere to catch up with friends or for studying/work! read more

Tried this coffee shop after a recommendation from a friend who lives in town. It's a really neat building that is really open and pretty. Their menu doesn't show everything they have, notably the miele, so don't be afraid to ask if you don't see it. I got the bourbon caramel and it's really good! Not overly sweet like some caramel coffee is. Some things I noticed were that one of the barista had a mask on, but it wasn't covering their nose or mouth. There was also condensation from the AC unit dripping water on the counter, lids, straws, container with mixing whisks, and milk pitchers. So some drinks are mixed with a whisk that was sitting in water that dropped from the ceiling. Kinda gross. Thankfully my drink didn't require that. That being said, I get that it's hot and humid and you can't really avoid a huge pipe in your building, but moving some of the stuff a little more out of the way would be nice read more

This coffee shop is located on the beautiful Baxter Ave which is surrounded by other little shops and eateries. There is seating available outside as well as inside with tables large enough to work or really do anything. The day I visited was for an unofficial business meet up. The atmosphere was such a relaxed one even with the amount of people present! I could hear just fine and didn't feel like I had to raise my voice to be heard. The service by the baristas was absolutely wonderful. Very very respectful young ladies who greeted me with a smile and a wonderful greeting. My mocha was absolutely delicious! Quill has a patronage point program to go towards future purchases. I will always seek out Quills because their chai is just that freaking delicious. Hot or cold, the extra cinnamon they add takes it to a superior level. Tonight, I went for a large, hot cup with a chocolate chunk cookie because the weather was so blustery and miserable. The creamy foam and rich chocolate were a match made in heaven. Now, having acknowledged my chai addiction, I can move on to the rest of the review. The three stars reflect the overall experience, not the service or quality of products. Since ambiance is a key factor, for me, when selecting a coffee house, this is where the lower rating comes into play. This location, as opposed to the one near UofL or the one in New Albany, has a bookstore feel to it. Everyone, except me, had a laptop and/or book out on their table. I was meeting a friend to catch up over my obsession, I mean tea. However, I felt like I'd just crashed a study group. One lady across the communal table from us even got up and moved (we were practically whispering). The loud-ish, indie music didn't seem to phase people, but actual conversation over coffee was an irritant. Strange. The space is bright and open. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. Prices are competitive and the parking, well, it's Bardstown Rd. Next time I crave their chai, I'll get it to go and meet up with folks somewhere more inviting or drive to the Old Louisville location.
