Quilon was on our wishlist during our visit to London, it is a Michelin star Indian restaurant that features South Indian coastal cuisine with a modern twist. My family tried seafood tasting menu (£125 pp approx $160) but they also offer vegetarian tasting menu for a slightly lower fare £115 pp Their Cod was probably one of the best we ever had. Oyster 2 ways was served very creative, cold with smoked red pepper and hot, pan fried with pepper masala. Vegetarian tasting menu was a bit of disappointment. They started with banana stem soup which was served warm almost tepid, to me soup should be hot. I had to return it. Rest of vegetarian menu seemed like regular South Indian dishes and taste was just ok. Service was quite sub par considering the expectation of a Michelin star restaurant. Our drinks were not filled on time.. we ordered a bottle of champagne and had to hunt down our server to refill it as he kept it in a bucket far away from us. The staff lacked experience in describing the dish. After the dessert course, one of the servers got something sweet in a plate, just kept it and left. I asked her what it was and she had no idea. Overall it was not the experience we expected compared to other Michelin star Indian restaurants in London. But we would definitely go back to have that black cod from ala carte menu. read more

There is little secret that outside of India, London is generally accepted as the spot to get an authentic Indian meal. It's a city where the cuisine is often separated to highlight specific regions of the country. Quilon is focused on the southern coastal foods of India, bringing a sharp contrast to some of the more common dishes in the Western World. Things to expect: bold chutneys, mango curries, fresh fish and plentiful heat. The wine list is spectacular, with extremely reasonable prices relative to retail. It is a true journey of senses throughout and the team is incredibly attentive to help guests pick out the right dishes. The design of the establishment is very contemporary and to say simply, is beautiful. This may be one of the best and most interesting Indian meals that money can buy. read more

I am absolutely appalled by our experience at this so‑called world‑class Michelin‑starred Northern Indian restaurant in London. We clearly notified the staff in advance that my sister has serious allergies to both mango and pineapple and reiterated this when ordering dessert to take away. We were explicitly reassured--more than once--that neither of the two desserts contained mango or pineapple. When my sister returned to the hotel and began eating the first dessert, she immediately recognized the taste and texture of pineapple and began having an allergic reaction. We called the restaurant right away and were told, "Oh no, there is no pineapple in it." Only after insisting and explaining that she was actively reacting did they "check with the chef" and admit that yes, there was pineapple in that dessert, but claimed there was no pineapple in the second one. Trusting that assurance, she tried the second dessert as well--only to find pineapple in that one too, triggering another reaction. Thankfully, she had the correct medication with her and was able to manage the reaction before it escalated into a full medical emergency. The thought of what could have happened if she hadn't had her medication on hand is terrifying. What makes this even worse is that when we called back to inform them of what had happened, they were dismissive and defensive. They essentially implied that we were lying about the second dessert containing pineapple, despite the fact that we have photos and the very clear evidence of an allergic reaction. There was no genuine apology, no sense of urgency, and no serious acknowledgment of the gravity of serving allergens after being explicitly warned. For a restaurant that prides itself on being the only Michelin‑starred Northern Indian restaurant in the world, this level of negligence around food allergies is unacceptable and dangerous. If my sister's reaction had been even more severe, they could kiss that precious Michelin star goodbye. At this level, basic allergy safety is non‑negotiable. If you or anyone in your party has food allergies, I would strongly advise you to think twice before dining here. At a minimum, they must learn to take allergy information seriously, communicate honestly with guests, and verify ingredients before making promises that can literally put someone's life at risk. This all happened with the "manager" or so he claimed when I asked to speak with the manager. read more

I wanted Indian cuisine and my 79 year old mother had never had Indian food, ever! We absolutely loved everything we had. I'm afraid Quilon has set the bar very high for her next Indian food. Haha. From the time I made the reservation, I was treated with such respect. I knew this was going to be an amazing experience. When we arrived, we were not rushed in anyway. We were offered time in the bar where we enjoyed unique cocktails in a very romantic environment. We were then shown to the dining room, where we were offered a choice of three different tables. The dining room manager was very helpful and offering suggestions for each person's personal taste. we started with a bottle of Tatinger. And appetizers from which there is a very large selection, and later had our main course. I highly recommend the lamb shank. The entire staff is very attentive, approachable, friendly, and accommodating. The food, is amazing. Very different from traditional Indian food, they will tell you that it is specific to the South of India. The wine list is also very extensive, and there are numerous selections from all over the world. We chose a Sauvignon Blanc from India. Wow!!!! Quilon is a different take on Indian food than I've ever had before. I came here by myself on a recent trip to London! The food and service were extraordinary. I was able to make a reservation the same day and was seated immediately. I couldn't decide on what to get, so I ordered a seafood tasting and was assured it wouldn't be too much for just one person, as they would be just bite sized. I was in London for business and my coworker booked a table at this wonderful establishment specializing in home-style South-West coastal Indian Cuisin. It was such a wonderful culinary experience that my mouth salivates just at the thought of the scrumptious meal we had. Hands down, one of the most authentic, high end South Indian Restaurants in London!!! Authentic south India flavors (note - I am from Kerala!!) - esp love the Lamb Biryani, the Prawn Masala, and the Mangalorean Chicken with Kerala Parotta! We ordered many items to sample as a family. The lemon jasmine rice was our least favorite but was recommended by our waitress. As an American, indulging in a Michelin star dinner focusing on regional cuisine of Kerela was a treat to remember. Upon entering the restaurant you feel like an upscale experience awaits. The only quibble was the 'standard Indian classical music' which is not everyone's taste. We had the seafood tasting menu (everyone had to order the same menu) which was a culinary delight. Cocktails were excellent - Laventini and the Botanical Garden were delicious. We also had two wines, a GAVI and a Peccorino, which paired well. The food was a tour de force through the various spices, curries and textures of Kerala seafood cuisine. I would recommend the tasting menu again since it runs you through the best of the best and was well portioned to leave you feeling full. I'll call out the 3rd course, black cod, which was out of this world in terms of flavor, texture and moisture. The lobster items were delicate and allowed the ingredient to shine. The service was attentive and timely, though a number of times we were asked for drinks or water after a wait staff had already asked. Was it a Michelin star experience? Yes. read more

The first dinner for our London vacation was at 1-Michelin Quilon, which happens to be right next to our hotel! The cuisine here is SW Indian, meaning it specializes in seafood with liberal uses of spices and marinades like coconut to add serious flavor boost. Overall wonderful food - 4.5 stars but rounding up to 5 stars when you factor in attentive service and extras thrown in. I'm trying to cut down a bit on shellfish so we decided to go ala carte rather than their seafood or traditional tasting menus. Total cost for two including VAT (no tips, since they don't take them) was about 130£, not bad! Dinner Highlights: * The free mini-pappadum were light, crispy and come with five different condiments. We found the chutneys far too spicy and instead stuck with the coconut and tomato dipping sauces. * Highly recommend the mini Dosa - a thin, cone-shaped crispy crepe with curried potatoes you can add, along with a nice tomatoey broth. An order comes with two cones. * Pistachio chicken is also a must-get appetizer. Incredibly soft and juicy breast meat with a thin, crispy crust of pistachios and herbs. An order comes with four bite-sized pieces. * For main dishes, the baked black cod is the winner. It reminds me of Asian-style miso black cod, but here they use coconut to keep the fish moist. Very soft and buttery fish, almost like a perfectly-cooked seabass texture-wise. * Fish curry was okay - great broth though the fish was slightly overcooked. Definitely enjoy over steamed basmati rice. * Fried okra was oily but was a pleasant surprise, as okra was sliced thin and yet retained its intense flavor and gumminess after being fried. * Dessert was the pistachio cake and ice cream, light and not excessively sweet. A nice extra for the meal included an awesome Rasam, which is a hot, spicy and tomatoey palate cleanser similar to a Bloody Mary. Also at the end of the meal, they gave more dessert with an assortment of white and dark chocolate thins - each with some herbs to add a gentle, spicy kick. read more

As a former part of the Empire it's no surprise that outstanding Indian cuisine can be found in the UK. Quilon, a Michelin one star, delivers; producing stunning South-west coastal Indian cuisine modernized for today's taste. This is a sensory charged eperience. Walk in and be greeted by air perfumed by fresh flowers. A warm welcome then regardless of your booking time, you will be invited to the lounge for a cocktail. Accept the invitation. Exceptional mixed drinks incorporating classic Indian libations. Nice selection of vintage beer. Once seated in the contemporary dining room, the experience truly begins. A selection of "crackers" are presented with different spices and herb condiments. Even the spiciest clearly showcase the flavor of the ingredients. No thermonuclear, mouth blowing heat. Any with tomato are outstanding. A lotus cake and crab cake are served together. The lotus, the unmistakable flavor of the seed brightened by a mildly spicy, chili infused mango sauce. The crab, very sweet with hints ginger, curry, and chilies with a mustard sauce, just good eats. Seafood course follows with a tender, sweet prawn cooked with a tomato marsala and a curry leaf and lentil crusted fish with a fresh ginger and coconut "chutney". Flavors in both are very subtle but unmistakably Indian in origin. A warm, somewhat chewy, ghee infused skillet bread, malabar paratha, the perfect "mop" for the marsala. Very different intermezzo that just works. This one a warm coriander scented tomato juice with the very clean flavor of fresh chili. Stateside yeeps, add some vodka and this would be the best bloody mary you've had. Land courses include an excellent, deeply flavored, fragrant malabar lamb biryani, a rich, super charged, complex aromatic spiced mangalorean chicken. A dish of coconut with asparagus and snow peas sautéed in mustard, curry leaves and chilies plus plain yoghurt with pomegranate seeds rounds out the offerings. Taste them separately then on advice of the manager, mix them together on the same plate. Sounds bizarre but wow, it works. A simple predessert highlighting a gently sweetened, refreshing berry puree then off to desssert. A good selection. OK alone but stellar with some port for much needed acidity. Tip: Opt for a tasting menu for the table unless you are familiar with Indian cuisine. Dishes are presented individually (not family style) in logical courses so flavors compliment. Very well chosen, practical wine list that best matches the food. Prices are very low for a restaurant of this caliber. Average bottle £40. Service is excellent. Like a fine tuned machine with the single manager conducting it all and greeting every guest. One month advance booking recommended. Stellar. read more

Popped into Quilon for dinner after a long day at work. Had couple of colleagues joining me and I offered to treat them to food from my land. I didn't look up the restaurant on Yelp or Google just got there. No Menu was displayed outside so no idea how pricey it was. Upon entering the reception staff greeted us and took our coats. The Maitre d' took us to our table and we were encouraged to sit where all the other guest were sat - reason given was there were only two waiters and we will get a better service. Menu and options were bit of a let for me personally, while Quilon positions it self as a seafood specialty restaurant I was hoping to find some authentic dishes from the west coast and I hardly found any non-fish based dish which was worth a try. The menu was pricey and beer expensive (£7 for a Mongoose). Then I read on their menu that it is a Michelin star (later found out 1 Star) restaurant frequented by MP and Lords et al. Ordered Almond chicken and Crispy Okra for starters , nothing exceptional and have to say both are not from west coast. I was hoping to find poricha kozhi (deep fried chicken). As far as the mains were concerned, the Kerala / Malabar Parotta (flaky bread made of refined flour) appeared handmade and tasted fresh. Mangalore Chicken curry was so-so and very small portion and not worth £22! Skipped the desert but we were offered some chocolates. The bill came to £125 for 4 (3 starters and 2 mains we shared), we only had 3 beers. Staff was attentive and food was good but not great or exception considering the price and the Michelin. Moreover, we were also charged for a dish which was never served! I bind shift, we should have gone for the sampler menu which I believe was £20 per head. The ambiance is great, staff exceptional, food was not that impressive so not a place I will visit again. Having said, if you like sea food and your curry and you happen to be in Vic and want to try out a Michelin star Indian, do pop over. You might like it. read more

Visiting from out of town and went here with my coworker to try out Indian food in London as we heard good things. I love Indian food and spent some time in India as well on a volunteer trip years ago and often think back to my yummy food experiences there.... like cheese naan, oregano naan, chai marsala in the evening, no vindaloo being available as its not actually Indian at all but wanting it, most perfect lamb/goat curries, fresh fried samosas... OMG lol. Okay I'll move on :) Well Quilon was good but not special and expensive too. Menu appeared to be contemporary take on Indian food and had some fusion items as well. There are no samosas or traditional curries here peeps. A starter was complimentary which was greatly appreciated but a couple dips/concoctions weren't that good and didn't go together well. We shared the cauliflower chilli fry (yummy), prawn masala (my favourite), manglorean chicken (like watered down butter chicken or murgh makhani, was good though), two aubergines dish (decent), tomato soup (delish and complimentary), lemon rice (its rice? haha) and paratha (crispy and chewy good). Had high expectations given the Michelin star rating but fell short. Nice location near Buckingham Palace and good service. My overall rating is 3.5 stars but wouldn't return again. read more

The absolute best Indian food I've ever had. It was fancy and different from the usual Indian food (chicken tikka, lamb saag, etc.). I expected to get some out-of-this-world curry and naan, but glad it wasn't the case. We tried the tasting menu with 13 courses for 2 with wine tasting which was a little too much for two people but the food was so delicious. I would say this is not really Indian food but more of fusion influenced by it. They were also very generous with their wine pour as well. Service is also top notch. This is one of our favorite restaurants when we visit London. This is not your typical Indian restaurant. They specialize in Southwest coastal Indian cuisine. I am typically not a huge fan of Indian food. However, we both love this restaurant! You must try the tasting menu. The various and distinct flavors are wonderful. And, the presentation is fantastic. This is a true fine dining experience that is not to be missed! We are heading back to London in a few weeks and we will definitely be stopping by for dinner again! read more

You may be concerned with this many four and five star reviews that you're setting yourself up for a let down. You're not. The atmosphere is calm, contemporary, and distinctly Indian. It feels like a natural and subtle blend of modern and Indian while completely avoiding any vulgar fusion that may come to mind. Service is superb from the hostess at the entrance, to the wait staff, and management. While fairly busy they were attentive and quick. The chef held up his end of the bargain with food to handle whatever cravings of Indian aromatics, spice, and ingredients you may have. I suggest the oyster on onion shell appetizer for a creamy delicate start. The prawn masala is definitely another pleaser. Tender and large prawns gently sauced with just the right spice. My husband and I had lunch at Quilon yesterday, to celebrate my birthday. Here are my thoughts: Ambiance is great. The table set up is really nice and the restaurant is very clean and sleek. Service was a bit rocky in the beginning as nobody came by to take our order. My husband finally got up to request that someone come by and from there on out service was fantastic. The manager (?) asked if everything was okay numerous times, saying that I wasn't eating much and he'd be happy to have the kitchen send out something different if I preferred. (I ate MORE than enough!) Food was quite good, but admittedly different from the typical Indian food I prefer (north vs. south). -- Seafood broth was a highlight. -- Husband enjoyed the salad. -- Chickpeas were excellent. -- Seabass was very good and more importantly, good quality. -- Rice was very good. -- Parathas aren't usually my thing but my husband enjoyed these (so much for his no-carb diet). -- Husband went to town on all the complimentary desserts as well - he enjoyed the cake and the trio of yogurts on my behalf (I am lactose-intolerant). Manager once again noticed I didn't eat the dessert and brought out a complimentary dish of mango sorbet for me, which was excellent. Overall Quilon really did surpass my expectations, mainly due to the fantastic and thoughtful service. I came here on a trip to London and had a very enjoyable dinner experience. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. We found the music to be a little off-putting, but overall enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. The service throughout our meal was pretty good, not exemplary, but we had no complaints. For starters, we got the cauliflower chili fry and the char grilled scallops. The staff was nice enough to split the appetizers for us on two separate plates. The char grilled scallops were pretty good and well-cooked, but the cauliflower stole the show for us. It is perfectly fried without being too crispy, and really well-spiced- I could've eaten buckets of it. For our entree, we got a potato and cauliflower dish, lobster butter pepper, and the prawn masala. The prawn masala was amazing and lived up to expectations; I would definitely recommend getting this dish. The lobster and potato/cauliflower dish were also very good. Quilon definitely does seafood dishes well, and you cannot really go wrong with anything. At the end of the meal, we were given complimentary sorbets (lemon, raspberry) that was a nice touch. Came here with the worst guy ever ralph. Actually, surprisingly I really didn't enjoy the food at the restaurant (neither of us did). At first they brought out these various dips. I've tried a lot of Indian food, but never anything quite like these sauces and dips - and unfortunately, I really didn't like them. They had a really peculiar taste to them. For the main course I got the Quilon fish curry (cubes of halibut simmered in coconut, chilli, and raw mango sauce), and again it was different from any curry I've tried before, and for me personally not in a good way. I felt a bit nauseous eating it. And although the decor of the restaurant was beautiful and all the waiters were very sweet to us, I really didn't like the food. Oh, and at the end they brought us these tomato style drinks to clear your pallet which were actually surprisingly really nice!! And the desert we got, a chocolate cake with pistachio drizzle, was normal and quite nice as well :) read more

Seated promptly (6:30 is early for dinner) Service was EXCELLENT- prompt on wine/water refills, checked up on us just multiple times, delightful ambiance overall. Tried to push the pre-set menu a bit, but I don't blame our server at all because of you've never had South Indian coastal cuisine, it's a good deal to try multiple plates on the menu. We ordered crab cakes as the starter to split, a bit small for £13, but delicious and mustard sauce was a great touch. Had 2 mains (black cod- which literally melts in your mouth!) and the fish curry (mango curry, not spicy), along with the potato & cauliflower (little kick, good texture), chickpea masala, lemon rice, and a pastry-like bread. For dessert, we were going to order the creme brûlée, but after asking our server what he recommended, he pointed us to the pistachio cake. It did not disappoint! The cake was buttery, not super sweet, with a center ball of pistachio ice cream. By the time we left at 8:30, the place was packed! Ambiance was low key, mix of clientele, and balanced music with conversation buzzing.
