We used to come here under the original owners for many years and we had a degree of trepidation visiting for the 1st time since Covid. As we came in we were greated by the owners father, Sydney I believe, and he was a delight. My wife had a great time chatting with him and he was happy to take out whatever we wanted to look at. This a a great knife shop that's been around since the mid 80s. Every visit to Julian I stop here. Tucked back in the corner next to the candle shop this cutlery shop cares lots of great knives from folders to fixed to custom fixed blades. Brands like Spyderco, Buck, and Benchmade to name a few. Guessing the owners wife, she mentioned they always get one each of the newest models from the knife companies including limited edition ones. I had seen one 2 weeks prior and really liked it. My wife and I were visiting Julian with our grandmother when my wife noticed this knife shop tucked away from the other shops. She knew I wanted to chop down vines and plants in our new home in GA so she points it out and off we go. I told Alex who was working the counter what I was looking for and he had suggestions ready to go! I appreciate his knowledge on the knives and his friendliness. Me and a friend definitely wanted to stop by here on our trip to Julian because we love knives. We looked through the glass cases for awhile but no one ever bothered to ask if we needed help. We ended up asking them to see a few knives in the cases. I asked about a particular one but he couldn't even tell me what size the blade was. You guys don't know your own merchandise? The man behind the counter was so surly and uninterested. I went in ready to buy a knife. But the people there couldn't care less about us. I asked the man to recommend a Kershaw knife, since I have a few and I like the brand, but would have loved to hear some facts or details or anything really that would help me make a decision. He said they are all good. Okay great. That sure helped a lot. Here would have been a perfect spot to up sell a particular knife. Do you guys know how to sell things, in a store? I wonder if it was the fact that it was 2 women browsing knives that made him so disinterested or perhaps that is his natural disposition. Yes, we're women and we know a lot about knives. No, we aren't men and we aren't military or law enforcement. Maybe we would have gotten better service had we been military men. Was looking for Knife shop that had a great,not just "Good," selection of EDC's.I found it in a most unlikely spot,tucked away in a merchants row downtown Julian. It's difficult buying knives on Amazon,you just don't know how that all important,intangible "Feel," is going to be...but at Quinn's you can get all the knife feels you want.I went looking for a summer knife,about half the weight of my work EDC.(Was giving me plumbers crack in the ol'cargo shorts.) Owner is operator,and he's very knowledgeable and helpful without being pushy or in a constant state of up-selling me to more spendy products.I wanted "Light,without sacrificing blade length,"came away with a wonderful little Civivi that I'm quite fond of and didn't brake the bank to obtain.Great buying experience.Although Quinn doesn't have the size or scope that "Semper Fi depot,"once did but they're gone now so I encourage all their old clientele to Give Quinn a try.Worth the drive,get some pie and make a day of it. read more

The store is run by a very nice guy who really knows his knives. While my wife was looking in the gift and candy stores I excused myself to shop in the type of store I want to hang out in. While the owner was answering questions for another shopper I was taking in all the sights and compiling a mental shopping list. When it was my turn (I don't like to rush people, especially in a nice, easy going shop like this in a small town.) I asked about a couple of Swiss Army knives (Victorinox) because I needed to replace one I had worn out. I expected the prices to be high, but I was so wrong! His prices were very competitive and I feel like a got a good deal. It's better to hold something in your hand and have an expert tell you about it rather than save 2 more dollars buying online. I bought a knife and I also got schooled in the Martiini knives from Finland. Great! Nice handles and sheaths, too. The prices were fair since I know how well the steel holds a sharp edge. This shop is a gem! Great products, fantastic service, all-around wonderful experience. I stopped in with my husband while traveling from Seattle. He had his eye on a Buck knife fleece vest, so I called later to buy it for him as a surprise and they were super helpful and friendly. The phone transaction was easy and personal - a much better experience than buying it from an online retailer. It was shipped to me right away... and it's perfect! Incredible selection of knives in this shop. The staff was really friendly, polite, and knowledgeable. There were so many knives that I wanted to take home, as there were different purposes and designs. I eventually settled on a Benchmade, but have already been back to buy a few camping/cooking specific knives and a couple of small utility ones for my car and motorcycle. They have a Damascus blade hatchet I've been eyeing for a while too. Every time I come to Julian, Ca, I make it a point to stop by the shop, and they never disappoint. I stumbled into Quinn Knives a few years ago when a motorcycle ride brought me to Julian for the first time. The tiny shop is always busy and sometimes you have to wait for your chance to look at the case. There selection is always great. I have purchased 5 beautiful knives there, one for myself and four as gifts. Going back to Julian this Sunday on another ride. Going to have some pie and check out all the cool shops. This knife shop was the crown jewel of my trip to Julian. It is the perfect escape for knife enthusiasts, out sightseeing with the family. I was so tired of looking at souvenirs and trinkets, and I was trapped in Julian during the off season. Though I enjoyed the alone time with my family, I was desperate for an attraction that pandered to my demographic. While walking along the main street, my daughter and me got separated from my wife. We began dipping and ducking in and out of cracks and crevasses in search of her, when we stumbled into this place. Though I did not buy anything at the time, I did enjoy looking around, and had a nice conversation with the gentleman at the counter. My husband loves knives, and we popped into this store to browse the selection. It was definitely overpriced, but we believe in supporting small businesses. My family has been into puzzles, so I picked out one with a black cat on it that looks just like our kitty. They have a sign advertising a 10% discount to military and law enforcement, which my husband should qualify for in two ways. He didn't have his credentials on him for his current occupation since we were just out for the day as a family, so he opted to show his military (veteran) ID at my insistence. The man made a comment (in front of other customers) about how neither he nor my husband would qualify for the discount because they're not active duty. The sign does not say anything about "active military", and it's honestly pretty insulting and embarrassing for a combat veteran to be told his service wasn't good enough for a $1.50 discount on a puzzle. After I informed the man quietly about the other discount qualification, he loudly announced his occupation (which is not something we enjoy drawing attention to considering the current political climate) in front of other customers. He continued to act suspicious and make comments that suggested he wanted more proof. At that point I'm looking through my phone to find a photo of hubby in uniform since he didn't have his creds, but as I was swiping my husband stopped me. He was quiet and staying as respectful as possible but starting to be very short with his responses and I could tell he was frustrated and just wanted to leave. He told the man to nevermind and that we would just pay full price and he continued to ask questions. He ended up giving us the discount, but my husband was bothered enough by the experience for it to ruin the rest of his day in Julian. I wish now that I had just put the puzzle back. Being around large crowds of people to make your wife and kids happy is challenging enough for some people without being essentially accused of stolen valor in front of your family and strangers over a 10% discount on a jigsaw puzzle. I'm giving more than one star because I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt based on the fact that he is very elderly and a veteran himself, but I really hope that they read this and avoid a repeat. Unfortunately I can guarantee that my family will never set foot in that store again. Not a nice way to treat a fellow vet. read more

Great little knife store, and a good reason for the ride out to Julian, as if the ride wasn't enough. Pretty good selection of mostly production blades as well as some nice custom work by locals. I picked up a JM knife friction folder for what I think was a smoking great deal. The person I talked with was very knowledgeable and took time to check her memory on the steel and handle materials. What a wonderful shop! The lady who owns the shop is so pleasant. I could talk to her for hours. She always takes the time to explain the pros and cons of various knifes. She also shares interesting stories regarding the history of various knife manufacturers or knife models. I always stop in her shop each time that I ride my Harley to Julian. I buy a knife during each visit -- not because I particularly wanted another knife, but because she makes the experience so interesting. They took the time to help me chose the right Benchmade knife and tighten up a loose thumb stud on my girlfriends Buck folder.
