I would give them negative stars if I could. I brought my dog to them and stated that he was having bowl issues to include runny stool with blood and I felt a lump in his stomach. The vet did not even touch him, then told me my nine year old dog had worms, gave me antibiotics, dewormer, and probiotics. A week later he could not keep food down so I took him to the emergency vet. They gave him a proper exam and diagnosed him with severe cancer. They found spots throughout his intestines and a large lump pushing on his kidney and I had to euthanize him. read more

Found out from a more expensive ER vet that my cat was misdiagnosed by dr Zachary hogges, presumably to add expensive / unnecessary tests to gouge the price of a simple examination visit. A regular $55 visit turned to over $200. Do not take your pet here, they feign care and caution to prompt more visits instead of proper diagnoses the first time - to make more money! read more

Polite, fast, and very affordable. My old vet was booked until late in the month, even with being a new dog they were able to fit us in two days after I called. Being a new patient I assumed it would take a while and there would be a lot of paperwork, but it was a simple process and I was in and out the door in under 30 minutes. I've never gone to the vet even for a quick visit without spending close to $100, today my bill was less than $25 for something my old vet would've charged me $50+ for. We had an emergency because our dog's eye popped out of its socket. Virginia Veterinary Center on Cary St told us that our dog would lose his sight in that eye and that it was best to remove it for around $3.3k. When we took him to Varina the next morning, they were able to save his eye for a very low price. These vets really care about these animals and Dr. Phil Olenic really took care of our pooter. They overcharge for everything! Was told that I had to pay for multiple exams ($55) for the same issue that THEY couldn't figure out. Honestly I think they could have figured it out if they tried but minimal effort across the board. Was told it was my fault for not setting up a date for a revisit, but they sure took my money for the medication. With out mentioning the follow-up. Called back and left messages for the doctors......I'm stilling waiting on that call back. 1st visit - its the food (science diet) switch salmon base here's some predisone. bye. 2nd - Don't switch to salmon, keep your food, its good. Dr. Dietrich examined my dog on 1/5 to determine why he was limping badly. My dog was hopping on 3 legs holding his right front paw off the ground. 2 Xrays indicated there was no bone damage or breaks. Dietrich prescribed a pain/inflammation medication and a medication for tick born illness associated with joint pain symptoms. $300 charge incurred for his effort. 1 week later I discovered they mistakenly switched the labels on the bottles which led to medicating my dog too much pain meds in an abbreviated time frame, and under medicating my dog for the possible but not certain tick born illness. Had I not noticed the number of pills remaining in what should have been the pain medication, I would not have called their office to speak with Dr. Dietrich about this discrepancy. Also, my dog was once again hopping on 3 legs after enjoying the past weekend without exhibiting the previous symptoms. Dietrich explained that the mixed dosages did not threaten my dog's health, but also did not apologize for this mistake nor offer the new pain meds free of charge for my inconvenience. Having read several reviews of this clinic, I can appreciate the numerous compliments, but I consider myself lucky that their oversight did not kill my dog, and I am looking for a new vet. read more

I'm a recent transplant to RIC in need of immediate medical care for my cat. With the COVID stay at home practices in place, it was a challenge finding a clinic that was open AND taking new patients. The reception at Varina Veterinary was friendly, efficient and painless! I was Scheduled for a next day appointment. Upon arrival, Even with social distancing practices in place, my pet was taken in by a tech, seen by the vet, and returned to my vehicle quickly. I was worried about not going inside with my pet, but I felt very comfortable since the tech described their protocol and executed it with ease. Dr. Olenic was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and no nonsense. He came out to the car to discuss the visit and follow up. I'll look forward to brining my other 2 pets for visits as well. read more

I chose this place due to its proximity to Rocketts Landing. The front desk staff are friendly and the vet was nice and informative. We have found our vet home in RVA. I wouldn't hesitate to use them as your vet if you live in the Henrico area. Prices are pretty on point with your average vet. Puppy visit with all shots and wellness check including some bacterial tests averaged in at $500. This is pretty on point with my experiences in other states with past pups. read more

My cat Chloe landed at the Varina vet after the previous vet could not diagnose a problem, I now know is common in older cats, and a extensive and very expensive exam with one of the local pet hospital. After 1 visit with Dr Phil and a change in her diet (and more frequent brushings) she is doing fine. She is back to her frisky and bossy self, and we are both very HAPPY! Thank you Dr Phil. With the exception of the staff members I have met in parking lot for pick up, all of the ones I have spoken with have been very welcoming and friendly. So, I called to make an appointment after reading the apology from them about my last appointment. I was told I'm no longer in the system and couldn't book me until they talked to their supervisor. I said I had paperwork printed and have all of my records. They stated they couldn't make an appointment for me until they got permission to allow me back. (I'm the one that left unhappy the first time around). I guess they really didn't want me back and deleted all records. My dog is in need of rabies and bordetella, but will just forget this place all together and go to a clinic. I like being personable with the vets , but with a clinic, at least they are accepting. Best of luck to y'all. I was never asking for free service ..... I also never asked to use care credit, I have a job and money. Varina Vet is hands down the most compassionate, knowledgeable, clean veterinary office in the east end. I have worked for other vets, taken my dogs to other vets and nowhere can offer the service and genuine concern that both Dr.Phil and Dr. Dietrich offer. I recently lost my morkie who only visited this vet once, yet Dr. Dietrich personally called to offer his condolences and then a few days later I received a card signed by all of the staff offering their sympathies as well. You don't find good people who truly care about their work and the community more than their bottom line often. The southern hospitality, combined with a beautiful office , friendly staff and knowledgeable veterinarians makes each visit a pleasant experience . read more

I am quite persnickety when it comes to my animals and their care and I couldn't have found a better place than Varina Vet. Great vets here. They have taken care of my four dogs for a number of years as well a feral cat I found. They are a caring group of people.

We started as a puppy to where we are today with a 1 year old 65 pound Doberman. The staff and vets are top notch here

Both doctors at this office are excellent. The entire staff care about the pet and the owner. They are not telling the owner to do things for their pets just to make money it is for the health of the animal. Best of all they try to work with scheduling so I can go after work. I just adopted a rescue animal and called Varina Vet Clinic to get established as a new patient. The office is easy to find and extremely convenient to downtown/Shockoe Bottom. I boarded my healthy dog here. He was dead in 3 days. Autopsy showed that he should not have died, it was negligence.

Fantastic place to take your pets. Absolutely love the doctors. I especially appreciate the way they don't push expensive tests. They understand when you have to work within a budget. They also explain things in terms I can understand instead of using a bunch of medical jargon. Love the personal touch of having my dog's picture taken for their facebook page!
