Had some HVAC ducting installed. Was told "Excess plaster, drywall, carpentry and painting are not included. They will be extra if necessary (not anticipated)" in the quote. Contractor (Dave) stated plan was to place ducting in right area of wall (where orange tape was placed). As a professional residential remodeler, I've used many HVAC companies. I've never had more callbacks and problems than on the Unico system that R&B installed in one of the houses I redid. That alone would be ok, but at every turn R&B tried to pass the blame and assumed zero responsibility for any of the issues. Additionally their billing is unreliable, causing more hassle with sorting through old invoices to see what has been paid and what has not. I will not be using them again. I've used their services at least three times in the past and this time I called to get a quote on a new hvac system for my rental. I asked the lady if the estimator would be able to call me while he was there so we could discuss options as the space for the unit is small and challenging. She acted like I was asking for the moon and said he might call a few days after that. It was pretty amazing. Blower motor died on condenser unit. Our usual HVAC guy was unavailable for a few days but R&B slotted us in on same day we called. Technician diagnosed the problem quickly, meaning blower needed to be ordered but technician advised that we have our regular HVAC guy deal with it because of a complex tie-in with our solar hot water system. I was looking forward to perhaps installing an Unico system in my one bedroom condo. My condo has very limited space, and I really need to build out a closet. The Hvac is hampering me from doing so. I needed it either reconfigured or replaced, and was hoping for some help from them. Not to mention the current system is attached to an old ceiling above the current ceiling that is concaving in. So there is some serious repair and/or replacement that needs to happen. The service technician that came not only canceled and hour before our scheduled appointment the first time, but was completely and utterly discouraging and an utter nay sayer. He had ZERO ZERO ZERO interest in helping me or looking to solve my issue. I had to politely ask him to leave. There is nothing worse than not being heard and having someone immediately say no, be not interested in what your needs are, and not looking to help solve an issue. I'm so disappointed, nearly in tears. Not to mention furious. What a waste of my time and energy. Am looking elsewhere for someone who AT LEAST LISTENS and AT LEAST WILL TRY TO ATTEMPT TO HELP. Professional employees who design duct work well and work very clean! Love working with them. However, they don't care how things look. The service is quite pricy, and we expected someone would care to close the huge cut out areas in the wall with some drywall. There is no attention to offering a finished product, just a functional one. Customer satisfaction does not appear to be highly regarded. For the cost of services, it is an unacceptable end product with varying cut out wholes around each duct in the wall! I was shocked to learn they were not coming back to cover the huge holes! R&B just replaced the compressor in our air conditioning unit and did a first-rate job. From start to finish, our experience with R&B was overwhelmingly positive and professional. Our Rheem air conditioning unit just gave out...at the wrong time of course, and we called our go-to company, Kesterson. Because of warranty issues, we had to use R&B, and I'm glad we had the chance to see what they could do. We initially contacted them via their website (because it was late in the evening). By 5:30 that morning, I received an email detailing what I could expect in the coming hours, and then a few hours later, I got a call from the owner who couldn't have been nicer! The owner and I spoke 2 or 3 times over the next hour about warranties and parts availability and by noon that day, we had a fair price and concrete plan to get our air conditioner repaired. I'll never forget this part of the experience. As we wrapped up our conversation, the owner said "before we leave your house on Saturday, we'll make sure everything is working to your satisfaction and that you're comfortable with the service we provided!" Based on positive reviews on this site, I contacted R&B for a service contract on a new Fujitsu ductless mini-split system installed in my home about a year ago. I was told a service contract would come to my email address within a few days. It didn't. Assuming the request might have gotten lost in the Covid/remote-work shuffle, I called again. I was told a service contract would come to my email address within a few days. It didn't. I saw on the company website that one could email someone named "Mike" directly. I emailed Mike and said I was interested in signing a service contract. No response. Perhaps the company offers service contracts only if it does the initial installation. But no one said that. No one said the company is not interested in small residences. Instead, the company pretended it was going to welcome a new customer. If emailing "Mike" from the website wasn't going to get a response, then the company shouldn't pretend that it will. The problem could be back-office inefficiency or something much worse. read more

I sought estimates from five HVAC companies, but R & B somehow came in significantly less than their competition. I appreciated the salesman's calm, friendly demeanor (Mr. David Gordon) as he explained the options for replacing the apartment-sized system. He gave me an easy-to-read work proposal with a detailed description of a replacement Carrier system with some optional upgrades. He quickly answered all my questions about Carrier heat pump models, performance, and the optional upgrades. I recently had an AC unit repaired by R&B based on recommendations I read on Yelp. I was hoping to find a company I could rely on in the future, but sadly, the search will have to continue. So that you can gauge response times, I called in the repair on a Tuesday morning and they couldn't fit me into their schedule until Friday. The basic service call charge is $127.95, which is fairly standard. Even though the unit was under warranty, the technician balked at performing any work because I purchased it from some other company (he claimed he couldn't do warranty work on a Carrier product unless I purchased it from them). When pushed, he called the main office and they confirmed he could do warranty work. The technician suspected that there was a leak because the system had no refrigerant. To perform a leak test they charge $600. The test confirmed that the coil had a leak and needed to be replaced. From the diagnosis until the repair was completed it took 11 days (many of which were unseasonably hot), which I think is unacceptable. I pushed for expedited shipping of the part and offered to pay (it had not even occurred to them to ask the supplier for expedited shipping options). In the end, what I was told would be "overnight" shipping translated into the 11 day delay. R&B blamed it on the supplier and the shipper, which could be true, but there didn't seem to be any project management going on at R&B. It took daily prompting and check-ins with them to get anything done, and obviously that didn't work out too well for me. I give two stars because the people were always friendly and the unit now works, but that isn't enough to overcome the otherwise deficient service. read more

This is a review not based on any work this company did, but on how they gave me the bid. My neighbor, who was about to use this company to have her AC unit replaced, recommended it to me. A technician came out to take a look and gave me a bid. The bid I got was not only significantly higher than the price I ultimately paid--for exactly the same materials and same work--but also a few hundred dollars more than my neighbor's bid! (My neighbor shared a copy of her bid with me, made by exactly the same guy.) Is that because I am NOT white, whereas my neighbor is? I can't help but wonder. At least this is a sign of dishonesty. We had R&B replace our gas powered furnace in January for us and didn't have any issues with that. However, I'm fairly sure R&B put the wrong sized unit in our home since our air return makes a noise whenever the unit turns on. The cost at the time was cheaper to other providers in the area. R&B beat another company in price but matched their two yearr warranty offering. R&B's install technicians arrived on-time and completed the install in the time they promised. They were quite tidy and seemed to be very cognizant of the area they were working in. My second experience with R&B was not nearly as smooth. We've been having a hot water heater issue so I requested R&B come out and take a look. What I didn't know was that I was paying an automatic $106 service fee. I was never told that by the dispatcher on the phone or by our sales representative. The technician also arrived an hour early even though I had selected a 3-7PM time slot. R&B acted like this was my fault even though I was told to call their offices after 2:00PM to determine where I was in the queue so I could leave work and meet the technician. Since the technician was already waiting at my house, I decided to Lyft home to meet them and to my surprise, they weren't at my home waiting. I called R&B to voice my frustrations with this and again, I was treating like I made the mistake and no concern was given to how this affected my workday. I rushed home, paid extra for a Lyft, and still have a broken water heater. R&B quoted us approximately $500 to repair the hot water heater even though the part costs $53 on amazon and can be installed in less than an hour. read more

My unit broke down on Sunday when it was about 97 degrees and I called R&B Sunday evening and left a message on answering service and they called back by 9 am Monday and was able to get me on their schedule by Tuesday. If you want to be ripped off, call R and B for service, or most HVAC companies in the DC area, for that matter. There are actually easy ways to save hundreds over the life of your HVAC system, if you do some research online and invest a bit of time on Youtube. It amazes me that these guys charge about $110 for any service call and that doesn't even apply as a credit to the cost of repair. Apparently it's an industry standard, but I find it outrageous to have to pay for a diagnosis when it is readily apparent what the repair needs to be and the service truck has to drive all of 3 blocks to get to my house. Here's a tip that I wish I'd known years ago - A very common cause of ACs not running efficiently or dying is that it needs a new dual run capacitor. Every homeowner should have a spare one on hand and learn the easy and quick steps to replace their own dual run capacitor. The part generally costs less than $20 on Amazon and it takes no more than 10 minutes to remove the cover panel on the AC, remove old capacitor and disconnect the wires and connect to the new one, and replace the cover. R&B wanted to charge $190 for parts and labor, but I ordered one (GE Genteq Round Capacitor 40 7.5 uf MFD 440 Volt) for $15 and installed it myself after watching a few Youtube videos. Another example of R&B's exorbitant pricing is their quote to repair my flue pipe which had disconnected from my furnace to the chimney due to age and corrosion. A Flue pipe is just sheet metal shaped into large pipes and T fittings about 5" in diameter. They're not that expensive, $25 or so for the parts I needed. The tricky thing is that the location is in our cellar and access is tough and awkward. R&B's quote was almost $600 for parts and labor!!! Insanity, right??? My solution was to ask our handyman to check it out and give me an estimate for his labor. Happy to report that $125 later (for parts and his 1-hour of labor), the flue was repaired. We added a Carbon Monoxide detector to the cellar as a pre-caution. I understand that a business has expenses as an employer of licensed technicians (not sure if labor union wages are in effect), but installing ready-made flue pipes don't require $150/hour labor rates to do the fix. In doing the math based on the quote, it appears R&B was charging 3 hours to do the fix and a 600% mark up on the parts. Craaazy!! I'm sure the service techs are good people for the most part and have to earn a living, but surely, they must have a hard time sleeping at night thinking about how much uninformed homeowners are being gouged! I bet whoever owns the company sleeps well and comfortably though. So in summary, look at the current capacitor in your central AC unit, order one or two extras on Amazon and learn how to install it yourself. If your system is running poorly or has died, this is one of the most likely problems. You'll save yourself $100 for the diagnostic visit and about $190 for repair labor and parts! read more

I called R & B Out to check out a leaking ductless AC unit and they were great! I called on a Saturday and the original dispatcher had a technician call me later that day. Luckily that guy let me know that to come out on a Saturday constituted an "emergency" and would cost extra - and this was not an emergency (in my book anyway). So I saved money by waiting to schedule an appointment on Monday. They had me in the schedule Tuesday and the service was phenomenal. The dispatcher let me know when the technician was at the appointment before mine so I knew I was next in line (since they give you a 4 hour window) and confirmed that the technician would call me when he was heading to my house. I appreciated this extra layer of communication a lot. The technician was friendly, listened to all my concerns and quickly addressed the issue. I appreciated that he was thorough in ensuring there was no additional issue and felt like they were honest and not looking to up-charge me on anything. These guys were a lifesaver. We have a 4 Monty old baby, so one Friday we woke u p and our basement had pools of water around the a/c. . It had recently been in the 90s the day before so I knew the a/c had been working overtime. Really there are two things thatll have cause the problem And neither am I prepared to handle myself. We turned the a/c off and started to call around to find an appointment. My wife got ahold of the dispatch / office manager at R and B and explained the situation. Also explained we had a baby and they were sympathetic, the lady explained she could squeeze us in BUT we had to be flexible with time AND answer when the technician called. Since it was going to be in the 90s that day, and we happily agreed. She said they'd call between 3 and 7. At 330 I got a call from the tech saying hed be there in 20 minutes. When he arrived he was very nice, used the little booties to cover his shoes when he went through the house. After diagnosing the problem he showed (and explained) to me what happened Ned, what he was going to do to fix it. Condensator had backed up, both clogged and had a bad angle. The repair took about and hour and half total, and he even checked the system outside to make sure my coils were Ok. Very nice guy. The fee was in the mid 300$ range, which, I expected could have been higher for a same day service. I appreciate the care they took when considering what we were going through. Let me share the difference between two companies when my AC system stopped cooling. I tried R & B Cooling first. I called on the weekend, they called at 8am Monday on the dot and sent out a tech that afternoon. They would charge $109 to come out and spend time to diagnose the proble. Great! The tech was on time, professional and quick to diagnose that our freon was gone and therefore there must be a leak that caused this. Fast diagnosis and quick to the point, Great! The problem is that they would do the next step to check where it was leaking during the initial diagnosis. They said it would be $250 to check and locate the leak. He said that even if they located the leak it would probably be better to replace my entire 17 year old system than spend money to locate and still may not be even able to repair inexpensively. They quoted me $7,000 for a new system that they could install two weeks later. The tech left and the problem is not fixed. Second Company, Siwon Air: They came out for a $90 fee, diagnosed a leak and went ahead and tested the reachable places in the system for a leak, without charging extra to do so. He used two different methods, found the leak on the easy to reach valve, replaced the leaky valve and recharged the freon for a reasonable fee. After a year of touch and go reliability problems with my 20+ year old heat pump, the grim reaper finally showed up and "old reliable" made its final revolution. I was prepared for the news and had no reservations calling R & B, our neighborhood HVAC business. I knew I'd pay a bit more than a cut-rate outfit but the customer service and installers were incredibly good and professional. The first guy came out to look at my old unit and a new one was installed over the next two days. While I never was without heat overnight, they offered to lend us space heaters overnight, which were not needed. I had a Fujitsu mini split installed in October 2015, not cheap but seemed like a great option for cooling a second floor that was not adequately cooled with the CAC system (original system had no return on second floor). This year the unit stopped working because of a failure of the condensate pump (started leaking in the fall but I didn't realize that was the problem). The estimate for replacing the pump cost is $562 and I was given no reason not to expect a similar expense in 3 more years. I am pissed because R&B was uninterested in learning from the manufacturer whether this is a defective pump and what the lifespan should be, and seemed to think this recurring expense is not out of the ordinary. I will not do business with R&B again and caution anyone considering a Fujitsu mini split to factor in this cost in making their decision. read more

Had R&B out to do what turned out to be a simple repair to our AC unit yesterday. I had done the same repair the year before myself, but apparently the part I replaced had burned out again. The customer service was fabulous from start to finish, called at 8 am and they showed up on time and were done by 4 pm. HOWEVER, my God are they expensive! R&B charged us $250 for a part which ranges from $20 - $100 online. $350 all told for the visit. This is more $$ than we have ever paid for a single HVAC service since living in the Nova area (8 years). We wanted to try out and support our "local" Del Ray HVAC place, but honestly, we'll likely never use them again based on cost alone. There are several fabulous reviews on Yelp for HVAC specialists around Alexandria. Certainly, there has to be a better combo of customer service and price out there!? So. I was thinking about making a switch in my HVAC maintenance provider and figured I'd give R&B a try as they're located just down the street. When I called to make an appointment for a seasonal inspection of my A/C, the woman who answered the phone asked about my system, and I told her that I had both central air and a mini-split unit upstairs, and that I wanted both inspected, but that my immediate concern was the mini-split, as it did not seem to be cooling the one time I'd tried to use it already this year. She said great, quoted me a price for inspecting both. Fast forward to my appointment day - my appointment window was from 1-5...tech showed up at 5:30. After 15 minutes, he came to tell me that he was done with inspecting my central air, but that they "don't work on" Fujitsu mini-splits because they're "difficult." (nevermind the fact that their website says that they "service all brands of equipment."). When I asked why I hadn't been told that when I called to schedule, he said that the schedulers "wouldn't know what a mini-split is." Okay - but at the very least you couldn't give them a list of brands you don't service? Especially if it's something that's really not that uncommon, particularly in this neighborhood? I am not a housewife, I do not regularly work from home, so it is exceedingly annoying to make arrangements to be out of the office for a day and have it be a waste. When one of their competitors told me 5 years ago that I needed a new HVAC system, for 2 completely different reasons-6 months apart, R and B assured me that I merely needed new refrigerant, thus saving me lots of money.(When they had the perfect "opportunity" to echo the other company's recommendations, they were honest and processional.) Fast forward to last week when my system did need to be replaced.( A 17 year old system that had outlived its predicted lifespan by 2- 5 years. Thanks, in part, to R and B's semiannual servicing??) I called Mike White, the service manager who initially saved me the $, and he had an estimate out to me the next day, and a team at my place within three days;They did have to order the equipment. The team of Steve and Ray were professional and knew their stuff. While conducting a thorough check, he alerted me to a plugged AC condensation line affecting my condo building's main line which was starting to back water up into my unit. He prevented a disaster by notifying me of this plumbing problem! He identified another issue with the aging AC unit, explained what options were available to me, and answered all the questions I had. I recently had R&B replace my air conditioning in my residence, and I'm pleased with their work and professionalism. While they underestimated the time to complete the project, they respected my time and the fact that I was taking time off from work. They showed up on time throughout the multi-day project, and they worked at a reasonable pace to get the job done in a quality manner. There were some hiccups along the way, and the managers worked with me to perform rework and make corrections as needed. They arranged for one of the subcontractors to correct their work on a weekend, to spare me from taking off more time from work, which I greatly appreciated. This company charged me 370.00 to put in a thermostat and a heating element, which took the technician 1.5 hours. My complaint was that the parts were under warranty so I was supposed to be charged for labor only. After the technician left I called the warranty sales person at R&B Inc, Daren, and complained about the high cost of the job. My first question to Daren was what is R&B's rate for labor (must be $185.00/hr since the bill was $370.00). He did not give a straight answer, but he told me that the 371.00 dollar came from a National Pricing Guide. I asked him email me a photocopy of the page(s) that state(s) to charge 371.00 in labor to install a thermostat and a heating element. He said that the National Pricing Guide was private, and he told me that he would call me back after talking to the technician. Daren said that he would give me a $37.00 credit "to make things easier." At the top rate of labor pay (100.00 according to https://www.homeadvisor.com/task.Install-or-Repair-Electrical-Switches-and-Outlets.40226.html?7735=20767&step=location&sar=true Home Advisor.com) this job should have been at most $250.00. Surprised to see the negative reviews-- I interviewed a number of HVAC companies and R&B was by far the most informed, the most committed to helping me address my issues (versus getting me to buy expensive upgrades), and the most professional in all my servicing appointments. I've worked with over 3 staff from R&B assess my HVAC and duct work, install a central humidifier unit, and service my heater for the winter. All staff have been extremely knowledgeable, competent, and helpful explaining what they were doing / what I can do to maintain on my own.
