Omg - I can't believe the knowledge, service and generosity of the staff at this location. I felt bad going in with such limited knowledge of the machinery with which I was having problems and their staff was so responsive and helpful in explaining some of the issues with me and while they didn't service the particular lawnmower I have - they spent a great deal of time giving me troubleshooting ideas and where to find a dealer that might work on the unusual brand I have. I can't say enough good things about this place and they are first on my list for any repairs I need done (reminded me a little of the Miracle on 34th street). The owner, Jacobo, repaired my chipper. He is very knowledgeable about the type of engines found in lawnmowers and similar machines and is very skilled at repairing them. And he will let you know if you'd be better off buying a new machine rather repairing your current one. He also gives you an accurate estimate of how much it will cost, and the time it will take to make the repair. First impression: This is a busy shop. My dad, an auto mechanic, once told me that the simplest way to tell if a mechanic is good is to see how many cars are parked outside his shop awaiting repairs. Jacobo, the proprietor, had a lot of mowers lined up for repair when I got there. My mower had been giving me problems for months, becoming increasingly hard to start and running raggedly. I'd taken it to another well-regarded repair shop a few weeks before, and it ran like a top afterwards---for about 10 minutes. Jacobo did all the things I like about a place that knows its business. He listened attentively when I described my mower's "symptoms," tried starting it to see what that might tell him, then told me what he thought could be the problem(s). Next, he took my information and promised to call me two days after with a description of the problem and the estimated cost of repair. He did so, as promised, and I approved the repair. Two days later I got my mower back at the agreed-upon price and have been happy with the way it runs ever since. Jacobo is attentive, efficient, and honest. He calls when he says he will, and he's upfront about describing what he thinks might be the problem. I noticed, too, when I was there that many of the customers that came in as we were doing paperwork had obviously been doing business with Jacobo for a long time. They were on a first-name basis, and Jacobo seemed to know all the little details about their machines, almost like a doting uncle who keeps track of all his nephews and nieces. Loading a mower into a car and then spending bucks to get it repaired is not a pleasant way to spend time. But Jacobo made it as painless as possible, so I have no problems recommending his business. read more

My lawn mower wouldn't start, so I called and Jacobo said I could bring it right over. He tried to fix it on the spot, but concluded that the carburetor needed to be cleaned, so I left it and had it back within 2 days. The cost was $80 which seemed reasonable and he found some dirt in the carb that had been the problem. read more

Cost 63.00 for an oil change and filter for a lawn mower? Took less than 15 minutes. Feel ripped off. Will never go back.

I brought my lawnmower in due to excessive smoking. I was met by the owner outside of the shop. He looked at the mower for a few minutes and removed the air filter and said it was smoking due to the fact that the air filter was dirty and had some like in it caused by me Turing it on its right side. He changed the air filter and started the mower... problem solved and only took 15 minutes. Total bill $59. Then, oops! I forgot to change you for the air filter make that $63. That's for 15 minutes of work. Always ask how much before letting him repair you tools! I felt ripped off and will not be back. Have a great Toro lawnmower but don't take much good care of it. It finally kept conking out so I figured I'd get it repaired. Tried searching online for "Lawn mower repair" in Marin etc and nothing. Finally after some phone calls I was referred to Jacobo at R&J Mechanics. Jacobo is an expert on gardening and landscaping tools, as evidenced by the variety of chainsaws, trenchers, tillers, weedeaters and lawnmowers tagged, repaired and ready for pickup in his shop. He seems to do both professional-grade and weekend warrior tools and gave me a fair estimate, and finished it faster than I needed it and called me. The total was less than the estimate. When I picked up my lawnmower, I couldn't recognize it - it was so clean I could've eaten off it! It started up right away with little torque and I'm off and mowing my lawn. I highly recommend Jacobo if you live in Marin and are looking for quality service and an honest businessman. read more

Took in my old pressure washer which wouldn't start. At first Jacobo expected it to be pretty expensive to repair and to take over a week. He called a few days later that it was repaired and only $117 for quite a few things wrong. It works great. Nice to have a local business so competent and with integrity. I took my smoking lawn mower to Jacobo not knowing what it would cost to fix or even if it was worth fixing. He charged $40 to diagnose the problem and called me the next day to say that it was fixed. Said that it only needed a minor service. Jocobo could have charged me a lot more and I would have paid. I had some trouble with my mower on a late Saturday afternoon. Lawn mower just stopped running just as I started my front yard. Did a quick search and found this shop in San Rafael. Threw the mower in the truck and got to shop at 2:00. The shop closes at 3. The owner took my mower in and figured out in about a minute that the gas had some water in it causing the mower to die. A quick flush a with some new gas a fresh spark plug and a carb adjustment and I was out the door before 3. I was able to finish the lawn front and back that afternoon. My Echo gas leaf blower was smoking with virtually no power and would die when given gas. I found R & J on line and stopped by this afternoon. I received next day service on my lawnmower and Jacobo did a great job, returning it really clean. He was helpful unloading and loading it back on my truck. He is friendly, businesslike and easy to understand and seems to know what he is doing. He seems to work on many other gas powered tool besides lawnmowers. I took my pressure washer to R & J. He charged me $45 when I dropped off and told me it was a pump failure and would cost me $410 + $45. After two weeks I decided I did not want him to fix it. When I went back to pick it up ( he did nothing at this point), he told me I would not get my $45 back but he would take the machine off my hands if I was going to take it to the dump. Out of curiosity, I searched the web for a pump and had it shipped to my house for $107. I am not mechanically inclined but I installed the new pump in 45 minutes. When I assembled the pressure gun, I found one of the fittings missing that was crucial to make it work. I know he used that fitting on someone else's machine and I knew if I went back and ask for it he would not confess that he used it. It was a very difficult fitting to find . . . I went to 4 stores before I found one. I'm sure he does a very good job fixing machines but i would never trust his integrity, honesty or business sense. read more
