We also had the bacon wrapped shrimp and regret not getting a double order. The seafood gumbo was cajun roux based and reminded me of my grandma Daigle's gumbo. I topped off my meal with a dressed shrimp po boy. My first time there and was so impressed with the quality of the food and the service. I highly recommend this restaurant. We almost missed it. We were looking for a traditional restaurant in a building. The GPS indicated we were in the right area. And then, fortunately, we spotted their temporary sign on the side of the road. Unbeknownst to us when we were visiting the region, Jan's building was destroyed in a storm a while back and now they are operating several days a week as a "pop up" at the Jules Nunez Lafitte Fisheries Market Pavilion. It may not be a bricks and mortar operation at the moment, but the food and service were top notch and I highly recommend stopping when they are open. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and they kindly explained the menu, the daily specials, and their procedure. I ordered a catfish po'boy with fries and sweet tea. My companion ordered something similar. After pouring our drinks we were invited to find a seat on the spacious deck overlooking the inter-coastal waterway. Barges and boats passing by made for some good photos and videos as we waited for our food. When the lunches were ready, a staff member brought them out to us. The fried catfish was decently breaded and crispy but not greasy. The fish itself was firm yet moist and pleasant on the palate. The baguette was nicely crusty. The sandwich was finished with the requisite lettuce, tomato and remoulade. The fries were generic but fine. Though the ketchup on the table was in bottles with a familiar brand name on the label, it seemed to be doctored up with additional seasonings to give it a bit of a cajun kick -- though not a hot and spicy one. Jan's is a hit every single time. Their original building was destroyed during a hurricane, so they are currently operating as a pop up at the pavilion. I love being able to eat a delicious meal on the bayou but they are working on opening their restaurant soon (which is close to the current location). They get busy during lunch but always handle the rush really well. For an appetizer, I usually pick the onion rings (dipped in tartar sauce of course) and they are to die for. For entrees, I will usually go for the Jordan special - a grilled piece of chicken covered in onion, bell peppers, and cheese with a side salad and perfectly seasoned potato's - OR I do chicken Philly sliders which literally MELT in your mouth. I have ventured out and tried other things off the menu and was NEVER disappointed. I really don't think you can go wrong eating here. read more

I lived there most of my life and when Jan's opened it's door i started eating there every Two to Three days a week never got tired of eating the great food the seafood platter was the best. The service was amazing very fast so fast you had to wait for the food to cool off for a while before you could eat it. The service was excellent the restaurant was a little small but the staff was great,friendly and i was constantly amazed on how often you were asked if everything was okay and if you needed anything else to drink or eat. The food server's were excellent great service and before you were finished eating one of the staff would come and asked if anyone wanted some dessert. The best home made onion rings ever. The only issue i had was the restaurant was just a little bit too small and crowded just about day were when you went there to eat some great food to eat. Its been almost 15 years since i been back home and the first thing I'm going to do is have dinner with the few family members i have left so if you're ever in the New Orleans area just drive past it and head to Jan's restaurant for a great place to eat. Not a sit down traditional restaurant yet (they're building their restaurant now) but the food was really good. Got off the airboat and it was less than 10 min away. We had the catfish po boy yum!! and hamburger. Fries were hot and fresh. Seating is picnic tables on a covered dock right on the shipping channel. Pretty cool to watch the boats pushing the huge barges along. They'll bring your food to you and come around to check on you and refill sweet tea (our love language). read more

Decided to try Jan's for Poboys and some gumbo on a lunch takeout. The sandwiches were good. I think a little more shrimp in my poboy would have improved the impression. The chicken Poboy was better because there was more in them. The gumbo was better than average. There was quite a bit of stuff in it and the taste was light and clean. It was not overly spicy. The Cajun fries were good, the regular fries were just average at best. I'd probably go back, but mostly because there are few options in the area (and I'd pick this place over Voleo's). read more

Did a swamp tour nearby and worked up an appetite afterwards-very happy we came across Jan's! Ordered the crawfish pies and a shrimp poboy which was more than enough for 2 people. Crawfish pies were a delicious appetizer with Cajun flavor and the shrimp in our poboy tasted so fresh! Sweet tea was so refreshing and all hit the spot! Staff was so sweet and helpful when ordering. Kristi and I split the catfish special. I had catfish, a shrimp stew over mashed potatoes and french bread. Rick had the hangover burger with fries. We also shared the shrimp pie appetizer. The shrimp pies were outstanding. They make a homemade sauce that is wonderful . The catfish special was outstanding. We loved the shrimp stew too. The tiny shrimp melted in your mouth. Although the storm took away the building that they had operated out of for many years, they opened up three days a week while they wait to get in the new building located by brother at the fishermen wharf. The food is still really good. Everyone that we came in contact with took excellent care of us, and in fact, they noticed that I was walking with a limp, and carried my food to the car for me. What a blessing to have such caring people. We had the Philly cheesesteak, P.O. Boy, the cheese, burger, and of course, gumbo. Everything was hot and fresh. Man-o-man- After a long day of fishing, stomach growling, we found the sweet spot. Great local restaurant, allows fisherman to bring their fresh catch and they'll prepare it any way you like. We called ahead and Jan had a spot for six waiting for us. The only thing missing from perfect hospitality was cold beers waiting on the table, but omg, Jan was so nice and helpful throughout our meal, it made the experience outstanding. Enough of the atmosphere, this place is good-perfect. We had onion rings to start, light batter, vidallia onions, sweet and crunchy with some hot sauce to cap it off, yummy. Next the seafood gumbo, great flavor, meaty, and dipping the OR, was a great touch. Just the right size to prep for the main course. We had sautéed, and fried redfish, catfish, and sheep head, all were . The sautéed had a slightly crispy layer of Cajun seasoning, with the fish moist, so it melted in you mouth, add a wash of beer and I just shook my head how good it tasted. The fries had a spicy light batter, that went well with or with hot sauce. The is nothing better than fish 6 hours out of the water...just delicious...but wait there's more... You have a sweet tooth, start with a sweet tea, but save room for the.....bread, damn it was so good, pudding....drizzled with a rum sauce, it was the perfect ending to a great meal... It's not bad, but not amazing. The only reason we come all the way out here is because it's a nice ride - a group of riders from my dad's neighborhood get together once a week to go motorcycle riding and we pick restaurants that are about an hour ride away. This is one of them. The dishes feel like home-cooked meals. I think Jan, the owner is there all the time. She's sweet - that southern hospotality-type lady. I've been here twice. I can't remember what I had the first time, but the second time I had the grilled shrimp here with a baked potato. I know I've tried the french fries with gravy - that was yummy. When you go out to this area, you feel like you step back in time about 100 years or so. It's a cute and old little town. I'd hate to LIVE there, but it's a nice little visit. read more

If you're a fan of brown, mediocre food, then this is your spot. Granted, it is what it is. I wasn't expecting much--and the service was friendly, if not great. But if you want anything that's not deep fried or brown, don't look for it here. I ordered a salad. What I got was a small bowl full of iceberg lettuce with two hamburger pickle slices and a half ripe wedge of hot-house tomato. My main course was the fried catfish--a double serving as is the custom in much of this region. Generous, but unnecessary. It was accompanied by a double helping of french fries and some grilled, buttered white bread. Would have been nice to get some collards or other greens. One redeeming item on the menu is their gumbo. Quite good, but a little salty. It too is brown, of course. :-) read more

We were starving after our Swamp Tour in Lafitte so decided to get a recommendation to eat lunch. There are not many places around, this is a small community. It is basically a big manufactured home turned into a kitchen and restaurant. They had a variety of Po'Boys here and they came out pretty tasty. The problem is the service, it was Painfully slow, and we were all starving so it made it worse. Definitely a local place as well. The fries with gravy on them were not good, so I would skip that appetizer, and just stick to the Po'Boys (Oyster). read more

We stopped at Jan's when exploring the Barataria Bayou area. Nice, quaint cafe with a good menu. It was pretty busy with locals, so we knew the food would be good. Our group had a burger, a shrimp PoBoy, and a chicken PoBoy. The sweet tea was delicious and they gave me a full one to go. The price was spot on and very reasonable. I knew the redfish was going to be fresh because we caught it that afternoon. Jan's is a no frills restaurant that does a fine job. The breading on the fish, shrimp and oysters is light and crispy. The best however is the sauteed redfish. As one of my companions said "swimming in the bayou in the morning ,swimming in butter in the evening"! The bread pudding was also heavy and homey. Good food, mediocre service. The hostess seemed less than pleased to serve us (we were obviously tourists, so I'm not sure I blame her, but she could have hid her annoyance a little). Our server was friendly, but didn't really check on us despite the small restaurant not being busy. Our table's order consisted of one sandwich, fries, and two small appetizers. Took almost 20 minutes to get our food, again, despite the relative lack of customers (I only saw one guy in the kitchen). But once we got our food, it definitely hit the spot. This is a nice little restaraunt. It's small and if you don't know where it is you'll deffinately miss it. It's not very noticable and you'll think it's closed due to the fact there's no lit up sign. The food is alraight depending on what you get. I thought the hamburger steak was pretty good and the proportion was much more than I expected. Jan's is a small restaurant located in the fishing village of Jean Lafitte. I have eaten there many times, and I have always found the oysters to be exceptional. They're always fried to perfection and are good either in the oyster platter or in a poboy. The oyster Poboy is large and generously filled with oysters. The same goes for the shrimp in either the platter or the poboy. They are large, locally caught shrimp. The french fries are always crispy and cooked perfectly. The grilled shrimp salad, which I tried today, was a disaster. It contained only shredded iceberg lettuce that was obviously prepared to put on sandwiches, sandwich slices of tomato cut into quarters, and the tiny shrimp which come frozen in packages and are commonly used for eggrolls or shrimp fried rice. They were not grilled but rather heated up in butter and probably in a microwave as they were rubbery and fairly tasteless. A hard-boiled egg was halved on either side and there was a spear of pickle. It was undoubtedly the worst $12 salad that I have ever eaten. The dining room is small, and it was impossible to have a conversation because of a very loud table full of local ladies who were joined by the equally loud restaurant owner. The service was friendly. If you eat here, I would stick with the gumbo, fried oysters, and fried shrimp. Whatever you do, don't try the salads. They are terrible. read more
