I decided to tag along with my girlfriend while she got her hair cut...she has been seeing Tammy for years and has always been so happy with her. While waiting I mentioned how I wanted to get my hair colored (I have been so lazy...seriously going on almost 2 years since I last colored it and have pretty much just given up). Tammy mentioned that Codey could do my hair so I jumped at the chance. Two hours later I walked out of the salon with a fresh color and cut - exactly what I wanted! I drive by R Salon daily but have never been in. From the outside it's nothing special, but once you step inside, OMG! It's so much larger than I expected. This place is AMAZING! Basically, you get what you pay for. I have been going to R Salon for 1 year now, it is a bit pricy but I have never had a bad hair cut or experience. Janelle is THE BEST! She is so cool, you can go in and ask for anything and she will do her best to make it happen. She has gotten all my different color requests spot on. She chopped my hair off and did it so carefully so she wouldn't cut it too short. I was sitting today with lightener on my hair and a 13 year old kid walked in and showed her a picture of what he wanted his hair to look like. It was a cartoon. He showed her a picture of a cartoon and she made it happen. He walked out happy. Not a lot of stylists can do that. So happy I found her and highly recommend her. read more

I have been seeing Kenzie R for over 3 years now at R Salon. I tried some stylists at a few other local salons and was disappointed because they just didn't know how to give a girl the blonde she wants. I called R Salon one night and asked the front desk to simply put me with whoever knows how to do blonde hair. Two days later I came in and I was amazed. I walked out brilliantly blonde and knew Kenzie would be the girl I come to for years! Every time I see her she also is always telling me about a new service she is offering and constantly staying up on hair knowledge! She is always very careful to give me what I want. Sometimes I change it up on her and always come away with the style or color I want. I can't say enough good things about her! JANELLE is incredible! I felt like she had been my stylist for the last 20 years! She just GOT IT....I didn't have to explain a thing, from the moment I sat in her chair. I knew she understood what would be best for my hair. I basically told her; "have at it". Oh man! Did she not only "get it" but she took it to the next level of making it easy for me to style!!! on a sidenote; I can spot extensions from about 50 yards away and Janelle is the only person I would EVER trust for extensions (and I was looking very close friends....VERY CLOSE!). UPDATE 5/14: The stylist in this review now works at a different salon. I still had a terrible experience, and was treated like crap by both him and the owner, so the review stays. Bottom line if you hate long reviews: This place left me with fried, orange hair from the most unprofessional stylist I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. I would tell you to look at my pics, but for some reason every time I tried to upload photos, they magically get deleted. I saw Roger Montoya (who as of a google search when this was written has an expired cosmetology license, multiple arrests and two mugshots). I requested beachy blonde hair. I told him multiple times that my hair pulls warm, so PLEASE NO ORANGE. He reassured me and promised there would be none. Fast forward - it's 9PM and I'm exhausted from hours of his failed attempts to tone the horrifying brassy orange out of my hair. My bill is $265 and he's gushing to everyone still in the salon about how great it looks. I am tired and humiliated and quietly pay the bill so I can get the hell out of there. At work the next day one of my colleagues actually privately asked me if I had used a box dye and if I needed the name of someone to fix it. Obviously I was not about to go back to him for correction so I called back and the salon owner agreed to do a correction. Despite his attempts, it looked no different than when I left the first time - except now I had muddy brown streaks. When I tried to bring this to his attention, he told me the following: "I find it interesting that in my 30 years of doing hair... Including teaching color for three different color manufactures ... Being a platform artist for Rocco Altobelli & Elizabeth Arden's Red Door...having done multiple celebrities including Academy award winning actresses - that you don't feel comfortable see me for your hair color - that indeed is a first for me ." He then blew me off and washed his hands of the issue, told me I could deal with Roger directly and that was that. At this point, I had wasted two evenings and a lot of money on this place. Enough is enough - I asked for a refund. Roger agreed via text. I messaged him repeatedly over the coming weeks asking where my refund was... no response. Finally I appealed the charge with my credit card company, only to find out that the OWNER of the salon, together with Roger, found the time time to write a long elaborate letter to my credit card company refusing my request (even having agreed to it previously!) I tried to talk with him about the issue on the phone and he told me that I "wasn't his priority" and he "changed his mind" about the refund, and has been ignoring me ever since... except for cussing me out on my Yelp page. Luckily, I found an awesome stylist who worked her ass off to fix what he did, but she was absolutely horrified by the state R Salon left my hair in (message me if you want her name or my before & afters). What can I say? If you like being treated like crap, disrespected, ignored, and getting exactly the opposite of what you ask for, see Roger Montoya or Rick at R Salon. read more

This review is specifically regarding Laurie Mae, and my experience with her. She had a Groupon listed, I purchased it, and when I tried to contact to schedule I got no response. When I called again, they said they were scheduling out a month for her and i had an event so i went elsewhere. When I called a different time to try and schedule, I was informed she was no longer accepting the Groupon (that she listed!) and I had to contact Groupon for a refund. OK. The service (while I was there) was not bad. I got an ok haircut here though my hairstylist yanked my hair like crazy, my scalp hurt for 2 days. But this is why I gave a one star. I worked in the retail industry as well, so I understand very well that sometimes it's irritating that customers with coupons are the ones that complain the most. But, this is a different story. I got a discount to R Salon, $75 for a haircut and hair color session. So I went in, got my hair done and everything, was pretty happy with it. And at the end, I gave my coupon, and my hair stylist charged me 30 dollars more for my hair was longer. That sounds right. BUT, I went home and later that night, around 7.30PM, the owner/manager of R Salon called me up and said the hair stylist miscounted the price, and he asked me to pay 80 dollars extra. I was thinking to myself " Wow, that's the first", I mean Really? Yes, he really did that and demanded for my credit card info. As a decent person, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and provided my CC info. So, yes, they charged it right away, no second thoughts. Now, it wasn't my fault, and as a business, the manager should have known that wasn't the right move. For 80 dollars, he lost a customer forever. read more

Stylist: Belen Services: Cut & Partial Highlight (Blonde hair) I'm new to Phoenix and was looking for a new salon to call home. Sadly, this will not be the place. The staff is unfriendly, and the place looks a little rundown (the ceiling over the wash bowls is falling down). Worst of all, the stylist I had does the hair she wants you to have, not the other way around. The highlights she ended up giving me were striped and started a half inch down on my head, making it look like I had outgrowth already. They also weren't the color we discussed. When I went back to have this fixed, she immediately got confrontational with me and told me that is the best she could do with the technique she chose, and if she were to fix it, she'd have to charge me. To me, that seems outrageous. She argued with me for a few minutes before she went to consult with coworkers about how to fix my hair. When she came back, I asked her to show me pictures of what she was talking about doing to my hair so I understand better. She refused to show me any pictures, and said "I can't do every picture you find on Pinterest." Shen then angrily started slapping bleach on my hair. The end result was horrifying! I wanted to cry. The front is white, with very little visible highlighting, the back is still entirely my natural color and one side of my head is lighter than the other. Frankly, it's a total disaster and an awful experience all around. I'm writing this review not to put anyone on blast, but to share what happened to me so others can avoid having the same experience. This place is the jackpot of salons... found it through yelp - sooo glad I did! I called Brandon in a panic. I needed a bang trim but had a fear of letting anyone new touch my hair. I also explained how anal and crazy I am when it comes to my hair, which made him think of a genius idea = LET THE OWNER CUT HER HAIR! Eric (sp?) is amaaaaaaazing! He worked his magic in less than 5 minutes, and I had compliments the entire night on how fabulous my bangs turned out. I went to R Salon a month or so ago for the Chocolate Mani/ Pedi on Living Social. Like everyone else who bought the deal, I hate to do this because everyone was very nice (except my nail tech)- but I have to be honest. I got to the salon 5 minutes early and was asked to wait in the reception area for my tech. I waited about 20 minutes until someone passed by and asked if I was waiting for someone, I told her I had an appointment for the mani/pedi and she said "oh, i didn't realize you showed up- I was just leaving." So from that point on- everything was ridiculously rushed. When I got to the chair, she looked at my feet and said, "Glitter? Really? This is going to take forever. If there's one way to make your nail tech mad, it's to have glitter polish on your feet." Then she proceeded to take her anger out on my cuticles. Throughout the entire process, she was texting someone and complaining to me about how late she was for something. Then we went and did the manicure, and I had those Sally Hansen peel polishes on my hands and she just got angrier because you have to soak the nails in order to get the decals off. This led to more texting and more roughness with my cuticles and more complaining about how I was holding her from some appointment. I finally said, "You know, it's cool. I can leave." I think at that point she realized how rude she was being and cooled it a little bit. She just didn't talk after that. Overall, a very frustrating experience. I just had my 4th hair appointment with Rick (the owner)...and it's about time I leave a 5-star review!! I moved to Scottsdale from Orange County in July and was super nervous about finding a new hair stylist to give me the blonde I desired. R Salon is near my work in the Biltmore area and after driving by the sidewalk sign a few times I Yelped it...of course! Boy am I glad I found R Salon! My first time visit was 50% off with a Yelp special with made my decision to go there even easier. The salon is super trendy and cute inside, but that's hard to tell from the outside. The receptionists are always friendly and they have yummy lemonade and beverages which they offer you right away. As for my actual hair - Rick is truly an artist when it comes to hair. Rick is a painter and hair is his canvas...how awesomely corny is that :) Corny, yet very true. Getting the "right blonde" is not easy, but he does it perfectly! Also, on a different note, if you want to chat he'll chat with you and if you just want to read or relax that's fine too. I highly recommend, not only Rick, but R Salon overall! read more

There is not an option for zero stars, but my review is zero. Let me start by saying I never thought I was a patient and understanding person until I went though a horrifying experience at R Salon. My stylist was Amy Horn. When I first went to her, I got highlights. I had never colored my hair before and did not know much about color. Now from my bad experience, I could teach a class on hair color. After the highlights, I wanted to go blonder. Over a series of a few months, Amy Horn made my hair blonder. I wanted to go platinum and one day when I came into the salon Amy told me about this "new revolutionary protector called Olaplex". She said she could do a bleach wash and make me platinum with it and with little damage. (I'd like to note that Olaplex is not new, it's been around awhile as I learned from my new stylist who has been reversing the damage Amy did since June). Anyhow, She did the bleach wash and didn't understand how to use Olaplex (I now know that, again because of my current stylist who told me the step 2 Olaplex is suppose to sit on your hair under heat). She did not know how to tone my hair either as she struggled several times putting toner on my hair and it would be too Ashy, too dark still (not enough natural pigment lifted), etc. She finally seemed to get it right one day, until I went in for a root touch up and she didn't leave the bleach on long enough. I went back and she over lapped the bleach. What happens when you over lap bleach is your hair falls out of your head at the exact point where the over lap happens. I suddenly suffered from losing about 50% of my hair at the scalp. It has since grown out to about bang level (see pictures). I have had to have my new stylist baby my hair and use Olaplex, the correct way, as he is actually educated in it's proper use. Amy should be as well, but is not. After a lot of "hair rehab" and a couple of months of re-growth, I am working with my new stylist (who does not work at R Salon by the way, I have no faith in that place after what I suffered) to get my hair back to looking nice again after the severe frying and damage Amy Horn did to my hair. It's been a struggle. I went to Amy a month or so ago again and showed her how my hair had broken where she over lapped it. She said "Oh I am surprised more didn't break all over". So she knew this would happen and still went through with it? I was shocked. Then I asked for some compensation for her failed color and inept work and she said she would have me back for free Olaplex treatments (again she doesn't know what she is doing so I was worried). However, she booked me and then had the receptionist call me the day of the appointment to cancel. So she doesn't know how to do her job, she's fake that she cares I had hair come out of my head because of her doing and does not make me priority in terms of fixing a mess she cause? Correct on all counts. I have a feeling she thought I would never tell anyone what I have suffered because of her, but my current stylist felt I should. He said if he has done to my hair what Amy did, he wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Please do not under any means trust Amy Horn with you hair. She will fry your hair and do nothing to fix it or to compensate you! A very snaky, sleazy and unprofessional way of acting. read more

GROUPON CUSTOMERS: Before you buy the Groupon, call the salon because they will probably honor the Groupon price without you actually having to buy it (that is what they did for me and every other person who reviewed this place) NOT SURE WHICH STYLIST TO CHOOSE: I am SO picky about my hair, I bring in pictures and comment and am annoying most of the time, but not with Shawn. I know that the doors say "Reception at North entrance" but it seems like a lot of people are super confused about where North is. North is not the Camelback side, it is the opposite side. So if you park on the Camelback side of the building and walk in the three doors on that side, you will end up in the back of the salon-- no big deal, just walk through and ask anyone how to get to the reception area and you'll be fine. Otherwise, do what I did and walk around the building to the door with the triangle shaped handle and VOILA! You're in. THE SALON: oh my gosh so cute! They have water, lemonade and what looks like Iced Tea. I had coffee with me so I did not partake. There is ample seating along the hallway and in the reception area. The chairs are nice. The hair washing stations are comfortable and the chairs adjust to fit you so you're not ridiculously uncomfortable at the neck. The receptionist (he was this adorable man) was just the sweetest thing ever. Would I recommend this place? Yes. Would I recommend a stylist? Shawn. Would I come back and pay full price? Nikki is a hair unicorn with magical hair powers. My parents have gone to her for a couple of years now. Always making sure they my disabled father can get a cut from her, and he who is very picky and OCD about his haircuts, loves her. I went to her in September of last year for a lob cut. Great layers, perfect style, quick and easy time in the mornings (which I hate). The cut lasted with style until just a month ago. That's a long time to not get a haircut and it being easy to maintain and look cute! Then, last week, I went to her. Backstory is that I lost my job a week prior and really needed a haircut. I went to Groupon and found one for $18 dollars. Although Nikki's pricing is WAY affordable, I took the chance to save some money on this other lady. BAD IDEA. (Not to sway from Nikki, but DON'T go to Windy City Salon in Scottsdale. Ever. Unless you want your hair butchered, look like a 12 year old boy). Anyways, I went to Nikki the next day. I took off my beanie and sat in the chair. We both went on and on about this lady and how horrible the cut was for such a long time, but it distracted me from the previous stress and the idea that my hair was going to end up WAY shorter than I ever expected due to the inches more the original lady cut off, plus what Nikki had to salvage. However, the end result was incredible. I went to her with images of a pixie cut that I would be okay with because I thought that from what she would need to salvage would mean a pixie style cut. Without hesitating, she asked me to see the original picture I brought to the other lady and said don't worry about the pixie cut because she's going to do her best to cut the rest to a shorter version of the original so that it grows into. End result: yes, she did. In less than an hour she transformed my hair back to what it should have been originally. I'm in love with it. And she charged me so little for the "re-do," especially since I'm unemployed. I can't and I won't promise that with everyone, but I do appreciate that she did that for me. Go see Nikki at R Salon. I love Susie D! And I intend to keep her as my hairstylist whenever I'm in Arizona. As I have previously been a hair model and a fan of hair styling and experimentation for years I can say I have had more scary experiences the memorable ones because more often than not stylist (with even a little bit of experience get scissor happy and seem to think they know what's best for a girl's head when they should be more like Susie and listen!) From the moment I walked in she was energetic and super friendly and everything she did was explained thoroughly. After I explained my situation in a nutshell she confirmed that she understood what I wanted and needed (even after I already thought she had) by showing me additional photos and using terminology that demonstrated how experienced she is. Not only was my appointment enjoyable and quick but she also gave me an amazing deal but I was even aware of via groupon! I'm looking forward to scheduling my next appointment to get my color done and hanging with my new best hair friend! read more

I just had my haircut with Shawn, and I am never going to anyone else again! After my hair stylist moved away from Phoenix two years ago, I have gone to DOZENS of salons, searching for the perfect stylist to transform my fragile, thin, oily but sometimes dry, cowlicky hair! I have been to every top salon in the Phoenix area (laying down some big bucks in the meanwhile), only to be disappointed every time... NO more! Today I found a Groupon Now deal for a haircut at R Salon. Desperate for a haircut (but prepared to be unimpressed), I called to schedule an appointment. The salon was able to squeeze me in 45 minutes later. My hair stylist was Shawn and it was his first night at the salon -He'd just moved from E's Urban Hair. Right away, I could tell that Shawn knew what he was doing (he has, after all, been cutting hair for 20+ years). He examined my hair with a critical eye, asked me tons of questions and set to work. I appreciated how focus he was the entire time he cut my hair! We'd been chatting up until my haircut, but once the scissors came out - razor sharp focus! Thirty minutes later, I walked out with a fun, flirty, layered cut - and I could NOT be happier. I'm all ready to book my next appointment and am done my search for the right stylist. *Note to those of you with delicate hair and scalps- Shawn is to hair styling as Jillian Michaels is to exercise. I've been here twice and I love this place. Very reasonably priced (I get a haircut for $35). Fun, colorful, stylish environment. Down-to-earth, talented staff. Rick (the owner) is wonderful; puts you right at ease, is a lot of fun to talk to, and really cares about giving you a cut you'll like. Think I've finally found *my* salon. read more

I do not recommend going here. It's all about mass production. I got a really bad haircut. The layers are all over the place. Save ur money and go somewhere else. Im currently looking for another place to fix this mess. Im sooo upset. I waited so long let my hair grow and they ruined it. read more
