My friend and I decided to come here for dinner - they have both indoor and outdoor seating (the outdoor seating also be a vibe; it is in the back of the resturant). The staff was super friendly and checked in on us pretty often to make sure that we were doing okay. -Arroz Negro: This dish was pretty unique - the prawn was very tender and the flavors were good. -Empanada Basket: HIGHLY recommend this; their empanadas was really good and a good size as well. I went back to R40 a few weeks ago. It had been a few years since I had gone, but I'd been meaning to go for a while. The restaurant is still nicely decorated, with a long, somewhat narrow indoor space, and an outdoor dining area in the back. The service was great, and our waiter was really friendly. This time, I had: Mushroom and Spinach Empanada (mozzarella, gruyere, parmigiano reggiano, bechamel) (4.5/5): This was a really good empanada. The crust was flaky and buttery, and not dry at all. The ratio of dough to filling was great. The filling itself was really good. Vegetarian Potato Gnocchi (arugula pesto, parmigiano reggiano) (4.5/5): This gnocchi was excellent. I don't typically like gnocchi, but I enjoyed this one a lot. The gnocchi were soft with a little bite, and the pesto was tasty. Chicken Milanesa (4.5/5): This is a large portion of chicken that is best shared. It comes with a salad on the side, which was really good. I enjoyed this a lot. The parrillada seemed like the best choice value wise. We started with the mushroom and spinach empanada. We thought it was great but I thought the dough and texture was more in line with a British style pie than an empanada. Plenty of filing. Delicious and flakey crust. I rest my case: small pie, not empanada. I had a mezcal margarita. Served over crushed ice with a dried lemon slice. Interesting interpretation. For the main course, we shared the skirt steak and the pesto gnocchi. Both were super. Steak was cooked exactly as we ordered it. Plenty of chimichurri too offering an abundance of flavor. Dish was definitely on the savory side. Gnocchi was served with ample pesto. There was so much pesto that we ordered bread to mop everything up. It eat more like a macaroni in my opinion. For dessert we had the flan. One of the best flans that we've had. It was served with an entire heaping of caramel. I think the dessert alone might be destination worthy. To my surprise, I came back to find the restaurant had a largely new menu! I love restaurants that change up their selection periodically. My new favorite dishes were the arroz negro and hand cut fries. The butterflied Black Sea bass was delicious and cooked beautifully, but I was surprised that it was bone in. Usually, a filleted or butterflied dish is deboned, so that was an unpleasant surprise. Also, we came in and ordered an appetizer and two entrées. We got our appetizer right away, but we were there for almost 2 hours before we got our entrée. We came on a saturday and there was cherry focaccia on the menu - didnt love it but everyone else really enjoyed it - Its a bit dessert-y. I would definitely recommend the ribeye for two if you're a meat person. Had so much left over for breakfast the next morning too. The focaccia was fine- not if you don't like thick bread though. The potato salad was also fine but I'm telling you that steak. Must try. The servers were amazing and always checking in, refilling drinks, and replacing cutlery. They even brought out the steak before they cooked it as a little preview. In terms of the ambiance, it was such a cute date spot (so many two seaters dining when I went). Out waitress was super friendly, gave great suggestions, and was able to help us make substitutions on the menu. For a Michelin star restaurant, I definitely expected a *little* more attention with the service (ie refilling water, clearing the plates) Housemade Focaccia: this was probably one of the best focaccias I've had. It's hard to make focaccia light and airy, but F40 did not disappoint. The crust was light and crusty, while the inside was soft and fluffy. It didn't feel too heavy from the olive oil either. I was delighted that it had a pop of sweet from blueberries and grapes baked on the top. Paradilla for Two: we ordered this and shared it among three people, and STILL had leftovers! We subbed out the blood sausage and sweet bread for extra short ribs and chorizo. The short ribs were definitely the star of the show- cooked to perfection, seasoned perfectly, and elevated with the homemade chimichurri sauce. The chicken was so tender it fell off of the bone and the chorizo was soft and Smokey. Would definitely order again. Chicken Milanesa: basically reminded me of a chicken parm. The server was attentive and patient as it took us a while to decide what to try. They switched out some menu items so a lot of the pictures of the things we wanted they didn't have. Unto the food that I ordered were the Crispy Pork Belly - not enough Pork Belly but it was very flavorful. It came in zesty Brussel Sprouts Slaw, Chicharron, Pickled Green Apples, Caraway Seeds, and Celery Root Puree. Ordered the 16oz, 30 day dry aged NY Strip Steak which wasn't that great especially for the price that you pay. On the side got the Papas Provenzal which are French fries, Parmesan, Garlic and Parsley. The sauce on the side was really good which was garlic butter. I went here a while ago with a group and I had my high hopes for another good Argentine spot and we ordered a similar menu here (essentially mirroring the Eat Like a Gaucho) and I found the main dish a lot worse here. The place has a pretty large back area with a nice view of the kitchen. The service was pretty friendly though they were a bit pushy with ordering more. To drink I went with the Patagonia Spritz with Lambrusco, Aperol, orange, strawberry, lemon, and club soda. Lambrusco is an Italian red and the one on the wine list outside of the cocktail is Lini 910 Labrusca so I presume this was the red one used. This was therefore a red wine spritz and while I am usually not a red wine person, the sweetness of the wine and Aperol paired with the fruits and it had a nice presentation and I would recommend it for red sangria fans. We started with the Seared Provoleta with confit Sicilian tomatoes, oregano, and grilled baguette. The cheese was nicely seared and it went well with the toasty baguette. There could have been more tomato. The portion size is perhaps a bit small but for $14, it was pretty reasonably priced. The same cannot be said for our main which was the Parillada For Two. Said parillada consisted of skirt steak, two short ribs, sweetbread, chorizo, blood sausage, and a confit chicken leg quarter served with wood-fired spring onions, pepperoncini peppers, market salad, house-made flatbread, chimichurri, and salsa criolla. The dish was presented nicely with the tasty flatbread (which had I believe oregano on it) laying on top of it. The skirt steak was thin and tough while the short ribs were bony and also tough. The sweetbreads were overcooked leaving them chewy. The chorizo and blood sausage were both surprisingly good with the former having a good bite and good spices and the morcilla/blood sausage having both good flavor and texture. Of all things, the chicken leg was the best part being moist and well flavored. The market salad was also surprisingly tasty with more variety from the watermelon radish and a nice dressing. I don't exactly go for a parillada for chicken and salad and all the steaks were both not reasonably portioned and also tough and chewy. For $105, I expected way better. I know this is a fancy neighborhood but the parillada here was both bad and overpriced. I liked the presentation whether was the appetizer, the drink, or the main course being covered by that nice bread but all of that is style not substance. They're trying to be a bit fancy here but if the basics aren't done right, the whole meal is let down especially if everyone in our group was paying around $70 not even including the cocktail. If you're going to go for a parillada and you're in Queens, stick with the cheaper stuff in Corona or Elmhurst and if you want the fancy version, go to Balvanera. 2.5 rounded down for the prices. read more

If you read nothing else: get the Panna Cotta if it means you need to doggy bag something. Trust me. Also, a disclaimer: I have higher-than-average salt sensitivity. You know what I really like about R40? Their meals and plates are very thoughtfully executed and composed. The accompaniments to the dishes offer various complementary flavors and textures (in perfect proportions, too) that round out and balance the dish. Pork Belly - The pork belly itself was flavorful, savory, and and cooked nicely! However, I found it just a tiny bit chewy (forgivable with pork) and a rather salty. This was served on a bed of brussels sprout slaw, with a border of green apple slices and a 'sauce' (for lack of a better word), of celery root puree, all topped with a crisp pork rind. The apples gave some gentle sweetness and tartness, the brussels sprouts freshness, puree earthiness, and the pork rind a very satisfying CRUNCH! I should mention I am typically not a fan of brussels sprouts, but that's a personal preference than an issue with the dish. Skirt Steak - Just like with the pork belly, this was a marvelously put together dish. The potatoes, bok choy, onion, and sauce all worked together marvelously to round out the steak with starchiness and freshness. As for the steak, it was perfectly cooked to the requested medium-rare. However, I found the steak was too salty for my taste, and notably chewy. When paying almost $50 for a piece of meat, I would hope it would be a heavenly melt-in-your-mouth kind of deal, or at least, not chewy...and this wasn't it. Reading others' reviews, I think the kitchen may have had some bad luck with this one :( But then there was the dessert! The Panna Cotta was a beautiful layered amalgamation of deliciousness. It was the perfect level of sweet, had different notes coming in from the curd, the coconut, and those tiny little spheres I want to very cautiously say are chocolate. I've had my eye on this place and when I saw there was a last minute opening on a Saturday night, I was sold! I had made the reservation for outdoors; about an hour beforehand I received a call from the host about how he noticed the weather isn't looking great and would it be OK to move our reservation indoors, which I accepted. Masks are no longer required, which honestly was a little jolting, but it was also wonderful to be greeted with an actual smile! Once I stepped in, I really did feel very comfortable. The space and vibe is elegant and casual and just so comfortable. There was hand sanitizer on the table and a QR code to view the menu. Also the tables were nicely spread out, so we definitely had our space. After looking at the cocktail list, I knew I wanted to try one, because they all sounded so good. We opt'd for the Paluso Punch and The Spritz, both were beautifully made and delicious. On to the main event! We started out with the Marinated Artichoke which were wood fire grilled and served with house made ricotta, roasted hazelnuts and charred onions. I can't even convey how incredibly amazing this dish was. I would order it again in a heartbeat; seriously don't sleep on this one. We also got a the Crab & Shrimp Empanada which was excellent. For the entree we got the Parrillada for Two which is basically grilled meat and served with a flatbread, some charred scallions, pepperocini and green salad. The skirt steak and short rib were my favorites, so flavorful and well cooked; followed by the sweetbreads and chorizo, which both had lovely flavors. The dish also included chicken which was good and some black chorizo. The salad and flatbread were the perfect accompaniments to the dish. This place was a lot to unpack, and unfortunately a big disappointment. I will highlight the positives and negatives below. For reference, we ordered the parrillada, fries (yum), spinach empanadas (good, but nothing special) and a the Peluso Punch (thumbs up!). They definitely deserve a raise and may be instrumental/influential in attracting patrons (listen up management -The servers were also impeccable about attention to detail and accommodating requests. The were great at making suggestions, taking orders promptly and explaining the menu items. The decor! -This place is legit gorgeous and has a really cool vibe. If you like your churrasco served with a Cardi B playlist, this is the spot for you. The negatives: The Food! -Ultimately this is why you dine out and the reason we will most likely never come back. * We asked for chicken in the place of a morcilla (which is typically cheaper) but we were told we can only replace it with another sausage so we opted for chorizo. My partner doesn't eat pork for religious reasons and I think the restaurant could have bended its policy to accommodate that, especially since were asking for a cheaper cut of meat. We were also upcharged for the chorizo, which was served along with the item we asked to replace? That's wasteful on the restaurant's part. -The chicken was also extremely fatty and inedible. The price: -This place was very expensive, and given the quality and quantity of the meal, it didn't match up. Currently open with reservations ONLY, no walk-ins. Although it wasn't hard for us to get a table for 4 within 15 mins on a Thursday for dinner. Service was top notch! We felt very welcomed by the employees from the moment we walked in til we left. A+ to the hostess who pointed out the location of the restroom (and the wine cellar) as we were making our way to the table. Such gesture was absolute necessary but I've never had someone who'd done so til R40! The drinks were on the lighter end of alcohol for most since they weren't consistent. We ordered the same drink twice but they came out different. We opted out for beers the second round instead, no big deal. The MUST TRY dish that I would come back over and over to get is the definitely the Arroz Negro! Presentation, texture, flavors, everything about this dish was immaculate. We devoured this dish within minutes! And definitely end your meal with the house-made espresso gelato. That rich flavor of coffee with small chunks of chocolate, bravo R40! Seems like a very popular spot in LIC and finally get to try. Very friendly service. Outdoor is spacious with heater. Experience was half and half. Appetizer - I prob enjoy them more than the meat. MARINATED ARTICHOKES: huge portion. Ricotta on sourdough was perfect each bite. Love this! ARROZ NEGRO: pretty good as it sounds and as it looks. Homemade Foccacia: dense not airy. Sorry but if this is homemade..... The sourdough was so much better. Dislike. PARRILLADA FOR TWO: Skirt Steak - fav. I could probably be happy just order the skirt steak order. Chicken Thigh - second liking as it's tender with grilled flavor. Short Rib - too much fat. Sweetbread - I probably prefer sweetbread fried. Chorizo - standard. Morcilla (blood sausage) little flaky. Not my thing. In general, menu is interesting, ingredient is good. But throughout the meal everything was quite heavy on the use of oil. Felt too greesy at the end of the meal. For cocktails, for $17 a glass, we tried 4 kinds but they don't really worth the price. Quite basic and light. read more
