I called Rack and Road in the morning to inquire about a six-bike rack -- Thule revert 6. They informed me that they had one available in stock. I requested a quote via text, and they promptly sent it to me. A few hours later, I informed them that I would come to have the rack installed. They began preparing the rack within half an hour. Everything was installed smoothly and efficiently. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about their work.

I'm a repeat customer with Rack N Road. There was no question where I wanted to go! I had my sons car fixed by them and the job was excellent. The service is friendly and reliable. This time I brought my car in to get a 2" tow hitch and bike rack installed. I went with the Kuat. Love the design and ease of use. One day I'll get a tow hitch installed on my other car too. Our experience with RackNRoad was a mixed one. Can be something between 2-3 stars. While the crews at the store were friendly and professional, several issues left us dissatisfied. Firstly, I would advise anyone looking to install a rack on their car without a rail track to DO SOME RESEARCH beforehand. We came to RackNRoad without any prior knowledge, assuming that they were the experts in rack solutions. However, we later discovered that our car could have installed the factory mount track from the dealer in the preset rail place, which would have saved us from drilling 10+ holes in the roof of our car. When we arrived at the store, we talked to a staff member and left our car for installation. We paid over $2300 for the rack and cargo box, excited to use them on our upcoming road trip. However, upon returning in the afternoon to pick up our car, we noticed that the rail was installed on top of our car roof by drilling over 10 holes. We had assumed that the rail would be installed in the preset rail place. The staff informed us that the rail place for our car was not made for putting rail tracks, there were no hooks there, and installing a permanent rail was the best way for us. Our attention then diverted as we found that the tailgate could not be opened, it closed halfway after being opened. The staff at RackNRoad told us that this issue had started before the installation, and they had evidence in the form of a video. They advised us to go to the dealer, as this issue should be part of a recall. We went to the dealer that same evening, as we were concerned about the safety of our children (the tailgate closes crazily). The day after, the dealer, at first, informed us that the issue would be covered by warranty, as it was a motor issue. However, when they removed the motor, they discovered a big hole caused by the rail installation, which meant that the issue was not covered by warranty. We returned to RackNRoad and spoke to the owner, Chris, who initially insisted that the error had occurred before the installation. However, when the dealer informed him that they had seen the hole in the motor, he agreed to pay for the repair. We very much appreciated it. The tailgate issue eventually be fixed by the dealer, yet we were left with several holes on our car roof, which we had paid over $2300 to create. We later discovered that the rail place of our car could have hooked factory rail tracks at fixed points, which would have been the best solution for our car and could have held 100% weight capacity. We returned to RackNRoad to send them the replaced motor, as Chris said he wanted to educate his staff to avoid such issues in the future. Although the staff at RackNRoad were friendly and professional, we felt that they did not handle our installation correctly. The consequences of their actions meant that we were left with 10+ holes in our relatively new car roof (2022 model, needing over $8000 to repair, quote from dealer), they had to pay for the motor repair fee ($1000+) and we had to accept a permanent rail that was not our preferred solution. None of us wanted. One more thing, when we went to buy the system, I asked them if they had any discount, and they said no. Then when I researched after everything happened, I found there was a 10% discount link on yelp. You only need to check-in in at that place. Then at the time we returned the replaced motor to the shop, I mentioned this 10% discount thing, and they gave me the discount, so I eventually 'saved' some money on my order. Thanks. In conclusion, while RackNRoad is a professional and responsible store, we felt that they could have done better in our installation. We would recommend that they fully educate customers before drilling any holes in their cars. We probably will go back for some other racks, but with more self-research first. Last, can somebody tell me what we can do with the holes in the top of our car? We are worried about water leakage on rainy days and the weight capacity of our roof.

I recently had my TESLA model S fitted with a hitch to accomodate a THULE Easy fold XT bike rack. Chris who is the manager provided exceptional customer service as I had some issues with the installation (missing clip and some clean up on the opening that was cut into the bottom plastic pan of the car). He proved that GOOD customer service and follow through are valued and took care of everything needed to make sure that I was happy with the overall purchase/installation by RackNRoad. My only comment for other TESLA owners is that you will definitely want to remove the hitch when not using it as it sits below the bumper far enough that you can scrape the hitch when pulling in/out of driveways (which can be "memorized" into the suspension program, but when driving around town it is not always apparent that you would need the car suspension adjusted up to "high") read more

Fast and easy service! I was in and out in 30 minutes with a new cargo box installed on my car. Ready to hit the slopes this season!! I already had the Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite in mind before I came here and called a few days before to check if they had some in stock. When I arrived in person to look at the Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite, they said it might be too long on my Lexus NX 200t because the back end might hit the trunk door when it opens or hang too much over the front windshield. They recommended to try it on my car anyway and if I wanted to get a smaller one, I can go with the 16 instead. Brought my car to the back and they installed the 18 box which definitely looked too long. Went with the 16 instead and it is a much better fit on my car. Quick installation and they showed me how to install it myself if I ever wanted to take it off or put it on another car. Highly recommend Rack n Road! read more

So here my update of this place. I ended up talking to Chris the owner of the shop and he was willing to fix his mistakes. He ended up paying for my headliner that was damaged during install of my rack. He was very saddened by what had happened to my car. since then was a pleasure to deal with to get this issue resolved. Am giving this place a 5 star because even though accident do happen he was willing to resolve the issues and not just brush his customers away and say it's not there fault. He actually does care about his customers. I am happy that he was willing to do what is right to make his customers happy. I will recommend family and friends to come here and shop if the ever need a rack and other outdoor stuff. Thank you Chris for all your help. read more

Went there this afternoon with my wife and 2yr old daughter and both people working there were very attentive and knowledgeable. They took the time to explain the best cargo roof rack for our needs and we were very happy we decided to stop by. We recently bought 2 ebikes and needed a bike rack for them. We needed it to swing out so we could open up the back doors of our van. We bought the Thule EasyFold XT 2. We were camping at KOA Moss LandingCA just last night when we woke up to 2 thieves trying to yank the bikes off the bike rack. They had cut a 3/4" cable lock with a tool they brought with them. We woke up in time to scare them off. We are so very happy with this bike rack! It saved us lots of $$$. We have to buy a new/better lock! LOL We are very happy with the purchase. I called before Christmas to purchase a hitch install for my daughter as a gift. The price with install seemed a bit high vs what I could have paid if I bought the hitch on line and installed myself but watching the video I knew it was a more complicated install than other vehicles so I agreed and pre-paid, setting an appointment for 12/30. When we arrived this morning they notified me that the person who took the order had selected the wrong vehicle and they didn't have the right parts in stock and couldn't get them before my daughter was returning to Oregon. I requested a refund and found a place in Oregon would do the work next week for half the price. San Jose R&R didn't acknowledge that they were charging me for the wrong product and service. Lesson learned: do your homework and don't just trust them as the "experts". Buyer beware! No, harm done but it was an inconvenience and not a positive experience. The manager said "through no fault of yours", after reviewing the call and realizing that his tech support entered the information wrong. Duh! Of course I know my car make and model, did you really think it could be my mistake? read more

They didn't let me return the hitch that is not fit my car and charge $20 for shipping fee even I picked up at the store, please check your receipt before you leave, make sure the item you are buying is right one for your car cos they won't let you return it, the manager guy was very rude raising voice to me a woman customer. Went to buy a cargo box and the staff is very helpful and friendly. I was in and out of there within the hour and that includes demoing different boxes and getting it installed on my vehicle. Prices appear to be on par with what I see online. Only thing I want to mention is that the surrounding area is a bit sketch. For example, I happen to witness a raging bum taking his shoes off and chucking it with all his might at a public bus. Went in the store as fast as I could because there was no way I wanted to get hit by that dirty shoe. read more

Chris the manager was great also Maria who helped us pick out the Thule XL roof storage box. During the COVID-19 virus they were still able to be open for limited hours for customers and was able to install the box on our suv. The team is very friendly and knowledgeable I would definitely go back. Also the first box we notice a dent on the roof box they quickly took the box back and had another box ordered to replaced it. Damage was probably caused by the delivery guys to their store. Go with these guys if you want honest friendly and helpful customer service. I am going back for sure for a roof racking system for my daily driver for sure. read more

So I've been to rack and road a few times. Each visit for something different. The first time I needed a copy of my ski rack key. I lost the original and the racks were stuck on my car! I was panicking at first but when I went to rack and road, the salesman handed me a huge ring of what seemed like a million keys and said have fun lol. Thank god I found a copy in the first 15 Keys. I had two made and was on my way. The second time was to see about getting fixed points on my 2015 sti. I was explained my options and decided to go for it. I opted not to get the crossbars at that time since I was deciding on the style I wanted for my car. They didn't look at me crazy or anything. The guy who helped me (I forgot his name) was awesome. He wasn't trying to push sales on me and was helping me decide the best options for my car. He probably knew I'd be back. The third time was to get the crossbars. Grayson was extremely helpful and helped me load my items into my car. I was a bit confused on my receipt a few days later so I called the store and got a thorough explanation. I will definitely be back. read more

I came in to buy a carrier for my 2018 Toyota Tacoma to lug my Vespa GTS 300 around with. The first day was a lot of making sure that the hitch an carrier could handle the weight of the vespa it's a bit heavier than some motorcycles coming in at 340lbs dry there was some research done for me as the hitch itself didnt have its weight stamped into it. The next day I was given a call back with the go ahead that the system that found would work and I was able to order it over the phone. Lucky me as I was headed to Mexico for my brothers wedding. And with them having to order the unit it would be here when I got back. They day I got back from Mexico they called and let me know it came it and is ready. I ran a few errands and came over to learn how to put it on and take it off. A little scary, but it was done with out too much anxiety. The owner helped me out too as I thought straps came with it, but they dont, so he let me borrow a set of kayak straps to get my bike home till I could get a set of motorcycle straps. I ended up just driving to GP Sports down the street and got some and brought them back immediately but it was very nice of him to give me time to make a decision. I saw a few things in here that I will be coming back to get one of which was a road shower that attaches to the rack of your truck. That will be a bit down the road though. read more

I had called to add a hitch and arm extension to my van. I was quoted $200 for installation and later was charged $250! Really!?! I had my solar panels installed by Rack & Road in Sacramento and they provided excellent service! I thought I was going to receive the same kind of service. I was very disappointed that they over charged me for installation and they were unable to properly install an cargo arm extension after they had assured me they had installed hundreds on similar vans. I will be going back to Sacramento to have an arm extension properly installed. The mechanic who in install my hitch was very knowledgeable and did a good job but the sales guys were not! Just saying! Ask lots of questions and get everything they offer you in writing!!! read more

BE CAREFUL!!!! This place is the most expensive place in town, go online and check the prices they give you and you will see their over charge. I also tried to compare them with a few other places few times including parts and labor and they were the highest in the area. First time was a year ago when i asked to install towing kit on my SUV and they asked over $1000 for labor and materials, i found the same kit including installation in $450 in UHall. Second time was today when I asked to install truck bed cover and they asked $970 for part that cost $870. Highly recommend to check the price rhey offer you and please dont fall into the exuse of "quality labor " ! read more

History

Established in 1993.

The Bauer family business started in a tiny shop in Redwood City, California as Bauer Industries, d.b.a. Sports Rack. In the 25-plus years since, we have become more than just a "Sports Rack" store. While we are still the nation's leader in sports racks and rack accessories, our current enhanced product line includes a wide array of vehicle racks, trailer hitches and hitch accessories, cargo boxes, travel gear, auto accessories and truck accessories for the entire family. We needed to change our name to reflect the growth and changes in our company. Rack N Road became our new moniker to reflect the company's new direction.

While a student at CSUS (california state universtity Sacramento) I purchased racks for myself at the Sacramento RackNRoad in 2003. John, the owner worked with me and he was great. Not pushy at all. After installing the Thule snowboard rack I bought, I returned it and bought an RV-Inno rack, which has been great for years now. Get compliments on it all the time, an A++ rack. Recently, I bought a rack for both my mom's and my dad's cars at the San Jose RackNRoad. The prices were great, same as the lowest I found on the internet, and they had everything in stock, as well as some used parts that I bought in order to spare a few bucks. Before buying, I looked into buying at Mel Cottons, REI, and Sports Basement. I even went in to REI, and then Sports Basement, to buy what I wanted, but after waiting 20 minutes at both places, and briefly talking with employees at both, decided that they obviously didn't want my money, nor were they professional about racks. When I walked into the RackNroad in SJ, they thanked me for coming in. Had to wait a bit, but, when you work with the best, guess you have to be willing to wait with the rest. At least there they greeted me, and I was able to listen to them working with other people in a RACK shop, not an outdoor store pretending to sell car racks. Felt good too, to support a local business, and while I am a member at REI and they have lifetime return policies, as suggested by others' comments, that doesn't matter, because Thule and Yakima both have lifetime warranties and if anything goes wrong with my rack, I have to take it to RackNRoad, not REI... ... ...So... I mind as well be nice to them, and give them my business. They are the pros, and installation pros. What I learned is you can't just put a rack anywhere, to make it look good, or make room for a sunroof. According to them, there are specific measurements the racks have to be installed under, which is a bummer, because my sunroof was blocked. :( ...but safe!!! Dont want me racks and boards blowing off on the freeway. So, thanks again RackNRoad. I will be back. My dad, mom, cousin, aunt and myself all love our RackNRoad racks! read more

My car-mounted bike rack was damaged in a collision, and so I went to Rack N Road to buy a replacement. I had purvchased my first bike rack there sevweral years earlier. The sales associate there (Jimmy Justice....By-the-way, what a ROCKIN' name, huh?) was very knowledgeable and friendly, and had thorough answers for all my questions without trying to "steer" me or "sell" me one way or the other. I bought a new replacement rack, and couldn't be happier. (Compare this with my other experience at REI over on Saratoga & Prospect in San Jose....those folks at REI, which was a larger store, also carried bike racks, albeit a smaller selection, but there was no one around to ask questions or to get help with selecting a bike rack, etc....you kinds felt like a lonely wanderer in the REI store....I was MUCH BETTER TAKEN CARE OF by Rack N Road...they are more personable and helpful by far!) read more

Thanks to James Justice at Rack N Road on Camden Rd. I saved a ton of money!! I wanted to get my Yakima roof rack that had been sitting dormant on the side of my house for over two years, back on top of my car. I kept putting it off for the longest time thinking it was going to cost me an arm and a leg, but because of the great team work and knowledge of James and his fellow employees, I was able to get the rack back in it's rightful place; on top of the car. After shopping for all of my previous bike racks in the past, at local bike shops, I wish I would have only known about this shop before I purchased my first rack many years ago. Definitely check rack n road first, when shopping for anything rack related and if he still works down there, James Justice is the man with a master plan. read more

Yesterday evening I was driving around San Jose looking for this part I wasn't even sure existed. Since I wasn't looking for a finished product, but rather some custom part for my own design, most bike shops send me away. So, as I cruse up to Rack N Road, it was already after regular store hours and only one employee was till inside. Jimmy, spend about 20 min of his own time to help me with my project and also printed info on other part shops in the area for me. Great Service and willingness to help. That's something you don't see everyday! oh yeah, and the store definitely has a large variety of cool parts, tools and gadgets for people who trying to find solutions for cycling in urban areas like San Jose etc. I would recommend anytime :) read more

THESE GUYS ROCK! After comparing prices for a new snowboarding rack, at some of the "higher-end" equipment stores, this place came into play and just blew our socks off. Not only did they have exactly what we were looking for, they offered a 10% discount and even took our older yakima rack and put it towards an awesome credit towards our bill. But more than anything, these guys were all about customer service. Brian and Jimmy clearly knew just about everything about racks and offered solutions for our set up...and was soooo cool to our 'lil guy and hooked him up with a bag full of stickers to keep him happy! The team at Rack N Road are the best! I went looking for a new rack system for my Ranger Rover. I was looking for a Yakima system - and they had everything in stock. I've had the opportunity to purchase a trailer hitch mount bike rack, 2 roof mount bike racks and one roof-top cargo carrier from these guys. They are GREAT. I live in Napa and wouldn't consider going anywhere else for my carrier needs - I'll make the 100 mile one-way trip to get the service and attention these guys provide. Brian is the store manager and Joe is one of the hard workers - they are both very customer service focused and know what the heck they're talking about. I just bought a new car and kept going back and fourth with myself over my final rack setup. Each visit, I was helped by a different person, 4 in all. I must say that each person really impressed me with their courtesy, product knowledge, and professionalism. This really is an ideal place to get any sort of external car gear over a big box store. They take the time to figure out your needs, explain your options, and make great recommendations. Chris and his gang installed a Thule SUP side by side rack for adding that one more toy we will take on our trailer trips this season. At first it looked as though things were heading towards impossible but they never stopped thinking about solutions! The surfboards and SUPs (4 if we want) now can travel 10 plus feet high on top of our 27ft Sprinter tow behind travel trailer and they are locked in place! They join the kayaks that live on top of the F250's camper shell and the mt bikes that are hidden behind the seat in the extended pickup cab. Thanks! read more

Cool staff, friendly & knowledgeable. Much thanks to Jimmy J. for his time and suggestions. We have an old set of Thule towers that were missing the plastic caps which hold the lock cores. The guys found an old set of the plastic caps in their back room and just GAVE them to us free of charge. Now we were able to install lock cores to keep the rack secure. They will price match other Thule or Yakima vendors, and provide installation support and adjustments on all the gear they carry. You can't go wrong with R n'R in Campbell ! read more

Recent bought a 2010 Subaru Outback. The bolted on factory Roof Racks that come with it are worthless. Fortunately Rack n Road came to the rescue! They sucessfully removed the factory racks and installed a new Thule systems that looks great on the car and is far more functional. This was not a simple task and they perfomed the job well, and made it look like it was meant to be on the car. Great job guys!!! This place is the bomb. I've never came here prior to my visit and I was looking for a replacement part for my fork mount rack cause it had seemed to crack. Gave it to a younger dude who was working and he said, hold on, let me check. Next thing I know, he came back with a brand new head for my rack. I asked him how much.. Nada. Came into a store I've never been to with a broken rack, asked for a replacement part, got an entire brand new head for free. That's what I'm talking about. read more

I've gotten a few things from Rack 'N Road and they've always been fantastic. They take time to explain how things work, how to mount/unmount whatever it is you're acquiring (in my case bike racks, and cargo boxes) and are just nice folks. The last time I went in was to get lock cores for a Thule bike rack (that I had). I asked if they were easy to install and they said, "yep - watch this" and put them in even though I hadn't purchased the rack from them. read more

I needed to get my Thule back bucket light connection repaired. I arrived at the shop an hour before they opened. Joe got there shortly after me and when he saw what I needed took care of it right away. Not only being incredibly sweet and accommodating, he charged me nothing. I was really pleased with the customer service I got here. I came in looking for a bike rack for my car, and they helped me find the right one that would fit around the fin on the back of my trunk. It took a couple of tries but eventually they figured out the right model, and Jimmy ended up installing it for free on my car. Went to Rack N' Road after the fools at Dodge couldn't figure out which bike rack would fit my new Durango. I had used Rack N' Road before and was not disappointed this time either. I was in and out in about ten minutes with a Thule rack that actually fits my car. Shocking! The salesmen pointed out that Thule racks are the longest so would fit my bike better - I'm very tall so have a long....bike. Can't go wrong with these guys. read more

Wow! I went into Rack n Road because we had lost the key to our Yakima sky box. They had a wall full of keys, but the spot for my model was empty. In stead of having me drive up to San Carlos to get one there, they changed out the lock on mine. When i asked what I owed them, they said, "Merry Christmas"! I don't know if it's because I'm a female that they saw me coming and tried to quote me for work equivalent to "replacing the oil in my head lamps". I wish I was exaggerating, I am not. Ender outright refused to give me any documentation for any work they did. I went to them several times, but over time noticed that he became more rude, chauvinistic, and dismissive when I pressed for any kind of documentation that I could keep on record for my vehicle. Maybe they've been forced to provide actual documentation now, but their business practices have not changed. He gave me credit card receipts for payment and nothing more. No document outlining what they did - brake measurements, fluid levels, parts, labor, nothing. One reason this matters is because when I took my car to a proper mechanic and the dealership, they both independently confirmed the work that Ender was supposed to have done was not done at all. This was not minor work. It cost me thousands of dollars to basically walk out with the same problem that I went there with. I would have pursued this to recover my money but it was too long after the work had been done. They went through my glove box, I know this because his worker who rifled through my things told me. Apparently, he didn't think there was anything wrong with that. Another lesson learned, sidenote especially for females, empty your glove box when taking your car to any mechanic from now on. I certainly have. It's not just the big things, but little things too. For example, they charged me $120 to wash the inside of my headlamps and I fell for it because I wanted to give them the business at the time. I thought they were being kind and watching out for me when it was the exact opposite. I feel like a dodo bird now, knowing that I was being fleeced. So BUYER BEWARE, especially females. Go somewhere you won't be seen as a sucker with a blank check.
