I must have looked like a sucker when I walked in! I wanted a part for a 4 year old Yakima rack, and they "looked" and claimed they didn't have parts for "such an old rack". Then they gave me an estimate of over $750 to install a new rack--and I was going to provide many of the parts, from my old racks! I looked up the cost of this bolt-on Yakima rack, and it is less than $500. Add at most $100 for labor, take off that same $100 for the parts I WAS PROVIDING, and you have $500 total, maybe. I called a place in San Carlos, and Joe said he had the parts I needed, and would happily sell them to me for $20 each. I only need two. read more

Fast and easy service! I was in and out in 30 minutes with a new cargo box installed on my car. Ready to hit the slopes this season!! I already had the Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite in mind before I came here and called a few days before to check if they had some in stock. When I arrived in person to look at the Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite, they said it might be too long on my Lexus NX 200t because the back end might hit the trunk door when it opens or hang too much over the front windshield. They recommended to try it on my car anyway and if I wanted to get a smaller one, I can go with the 16 instead. Brought my car to the back and they installed the 18 box which definitely looked too long. Went with the 16 instead and it is a much better fit on my car. Quick installation and they showed me how to install it myself if I ever wanted to take it off or put it on another car. Highly recommend Rack n Road! read more

I have been dealing with Chris since 2016 with delight. I had a problem with Thule's horrible customer service after Chris suggested I try going through their customer service since they offer a lifetime warranty. Thule's "customer disservice" was a disaster, so I took my problem into the shop and once again, I left very happy, as Eric, now the manager, solved my problem and will deal with Thule directly. Paid retail prices to get a Thule cargo box installed. Later found that one of the handles on the Thule box was broken. Tried to work with them afterwards to get it repaired. I have been calling them every week for 3 months. The consistent refrain is, "we have sent Thule email and they are not responding." There was a slight difference this time when they told me to call Thule myself. This establishment does not stand behind their work. I just have to say, the people here are AMAZING! Such a great group of guys. My first stop in was speaking with the owner, Chris. Second stop in was to weigh out my options and purchase. Julian was extremely knowledgeable about every product in the store! He asked me questions because he actually cared about my input. And never condescending like some other stores are. He talked me through everything and even squeezed me in for an appointment the same day. I spoke to several other employees there that day Joe the installer and some others (sorry guys. I forgot some of your names) but it was such a pleasure speaking with every single one of you! The two gentlemen that took the time out to place a Hyper xl and a Yakima Showcase on my SQ5 were great. They weren't open on time when I arrived. The guy who did show up was bossy towards myself and the other customer who had a 10:00 am appointment. The job was quoted $200 labor for hitch install and $200 labor to install a wiring harness. It would seem the hitch install was done properly. The wiring harness was not anywhere that I could see. After looking I found the wiring harness inside the spare tire compartment inside the vehicle? WTF I'm paying for installation with expectations of an external plug next to the receiver for the hitch. I walked back Into the showroom and told young man I had a question about the install on the wiring harness. He accompanied me out to the street where I showed him the work done and asked is that the best they can do. Some statement about blaming Honda was made but really!! They should have mentioned that the final result would be a cable harness with no connector just laying in the spare tire compartment. I would not have elected to do the work. They even asked for 50% up front and then pressured me to pay the final amount after I dropped the car off. At no time did I feel appreciated as a customer. They're immature average skilled young men with self imposed impression they are cool bitchin dudes. Logistics of this place sucks! read more

I went in to buy a roof rack to carry my snowboard at 945 as the apple maps said they open at 930. There were other confused people at the door as i walked up to see they were closed and not opening until 10. I went back at 955 and had to wait until 1030 to be served. At that point I was sold a roof system that was meant to be shipped in by tuesday and didnt come until wednesday. once assembling the rack on my own to avoid the 150$ charge I realized I wasn't even sold the part to hold the snowboard. Why try charge me to assemble the thing without even selling me the entire system. What a seamless experience/transaction (for the most part) from start to finish. Called on a Saturday to get an idea on how much to install a cross bar on a Toyota Corolla. By the following Saturday the product was installed. Installation took around 2-3 hours. Zach who I spoke to by phone to get a quote was extremely helpful. He had explained the various options I can go with to install the cross bars, including the pros & cons of going with a custom install vs a door clamp install. At the end, although the labor cost was slightly more, I decided to go with a custom install because it would have a cleaner look & would not damage the door frames. The overall cost for parts (Yakima) & labor was around $1000. As far as parts go, it appears the Yakima parts are cost similarly as what it would cost at Amazon (that is rare now a days). In fact, Rack N Road actually even had a Yakima Load Warrior locking system available on stock that has not been available in Amazon for some time. That was like finding gold - lol. They even match the locking mechanism so that it uses the same key as the locking mechanism used for the cross bars so I can simply use the same key for both. Overall, as stated above it was a seamless experience/transaction. Highly recommended. Note: The only negative things.. it is hard to get someone by phone but I believe that is because they are mostly busy with install... They also did not carry the Yakima Load Warrior basket as they did not have in inventory and that ordering the basket could take as much as 1 month to receive. I checked Amazon & I was able to purchase and receive in a few days. But still rating them 5 stars. read more

We ordered a monorail back in early July. We were waiting for our extension for our 3rd bike holder ALLLLLLLL summer + fall...literally! We sent multiple emails and made several phone calls and they just kept telling us our extension "was on truck to be delivered." I needed a trailer hitch installed quickly on my 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid, preferably somewhere in San Jose/South Bay. I did some research and found U-Haul and this place. U-Haul gave me an online estimate of about $500 with an appointment 10 days later. As I needed the hitch ASAP, I tried RNR, which had positive reviews on Yelp and Reddit. I called but the voicemail message recommended I visit their location in person. I went the following day when their doors opened and spoke with Chris. He was friendly and answered all my questions. Unfortunately, the hitch that fit my vehicle was out of stock. I guess the pandemic caused a high demand for that particular model. Nevertheless, Chris was able to order the hitch I needed with next day shipping. My total cost for parts, labor, and shipping was $460. They called me when the hitch arrived and told me they could install it that same day. I don't know if same day installation is common but they were able to accommodate my urgent need for a hitch. I drove to their store, dropped off my car, walked to Zanotto's for a snack, and they soon called to notify me the installation was complete. Installation took about an hour. The hitch looks great, the customer service was excellent, and my entire RNR experience was positive. I would definitely recommend RNR to anyone who needs a hitch installed quickly. We wanted to keep giving them more business so we took our second van and told them to do the same for the other van. We end up getting a different ladder rack that we are unhappy with and this time aroun it was missing a shelf. However, after having a trailer hitch installed I realized a few days later they had forgotten to reinstall a clip on one of the tail lights. Rack and Road San Jose steered me to the right kit and took a deposit as the kit was out of stock. About a month later, they called with some bad news. The kit I needed was discontinued by Thule!
