DO NOT EVER COME HERE! I rarely write reviews but I had such a horrible experience with Rafi's pastry that I had no other option. I ordered a custom graduation cake in April for my party in June. They couldn't do everything I wanted and it was more expensive than I expected but I thought that was okay. I had heard such great reviews about Rafi's pastry that I thought it would be worth it. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. I was scheduled to pick up my cake at 6pm and we got there about 6:10pm. It took about 5 minutes of yelling "hello" for the lady from the kitchen to come to the counter. I told her I was there to pick up the graduation cake for 6pm. She rolled her eyes at me and walked back into the kitchen. Mind you, she hadn't said a word to me up to this point. She came back to the front speaking Arabic on the phone and told me that Rafi is running late from a wedding and the cake wasn't ready yet. I asked her when it would be ready. She told me about 30 minutes, by 7pm the latest, and Rafi would personally deliver it. I left her my cell phone number and home address. By 7:10pm we still hadn't received the cake or heard anything from them so I called the bakery to check on the status of the cake. The lady from the counter answered my phone call and rudely said "we can't get the font that you want that's why it's taking so long." I ORDERED MY CAKE TWO MONTHS IN ADVANCE! Why was it left to an hour after my pick up time?? She told me it would take another 30 mins and I would have the cake. It was past 7:30pm and still no word from Rafi. I called once again and this time Rafi answered and apparently the printer was broken and he sent someone to buy a new printer. At this point my party was in full swing and I still had no cake. I told him I didn't care anymore; just bring me the cake whatever condition it was in. It was 8pm when some guy brought the cake, didn't say a word to anyone and just left. Apart from being TWO HOURS LATE, my school's logo was PRINTED ON PAPER AND TAPED TO MY CAKE. Everyone could literally see the tape/logo falling apart. THE CAKE WAS MEDIOCRE AND THE SERVICE WAS APPALLING. I called Rafi's pastry for an entire week, several times a day, to speak with Rafi and was refused each time by the same lady working at the counter. I finally went to the store to speak with him and apparently Rafi was "stuck in traffic". I understand I didn't have a big order like a wedding cake but DON'T PROMISE A SERVICE, FAIL TO DELIVER, AND THEN HIDE LIKE A COWARD. read more

So I am writing this review as a summary of my 3 encounters with Rafi's. 1) Wedding Cake - All in all, this experience was great (though we did meet with Rafi along with a friend of his, so I am not sure if it would have been different if we were any other customer. The cake looked and tasted amazing, decently prices. No complaints here. This is where they lost me. 2) A year later I called (and after multiple attempts, finally someone answered the phone) to order our free anniversary cake - which, by the way, is a really nice thing to do. I spoke to someone who took all the information and told me to email a picture so that they know how to decorate the cake. I emailed twice without a response, and had to call again to make sure it was received. When I went to pick up the cake, it look nothing like our wedding cake, and I was told then that all the free anniversary cakes look the same. Understandable, but not something that was communicated to me. A couple minutes of questioning later, I decided not to pursue the issue and took the cake. Needless to say my wife was not happy (or was I), we were looking forward to this cake and it wasn't what we expected. Very disappointing. 3) So I decided to go back to Rafi's to order an anniversary cake that looks like our wedding cake. I placed the order (they would need 2 weeks for it) and told them that the image was email (twice). Two days before I was going to pick it up, I was called to send an image....again. So I did....again. I went to pick up the cake, and imagine my disbelief when it didn't look like my wedding cake. It was close (we had a certain kind of sugar flowers, they had placed different kind of flowers), but I didn't order close, I ordered my cake. I was told that the flowers on my wedding cake are heavy and would sag on a real cake. "Understandable," I said, "but why did no one tell me." So again I started to argue with the person about the difference between how my wedding cake looked, and what they had made. She was making it seem like it was my fault that the cake was wrong. But since I paid for this cake, I wanted what I ordered. And after some huffing and puffing, the replaced the flowers and I got something that, at least, resembled our cake. So in short, here's the deal: 1) The cakes taste great 2) Customer service/communication needs work, lots of work! read more

By far the WORST experience we have ever had. I still can't believe it. We have worked with Rafi a few times before and had no problems. Today we were left speechless and are NEVER coming back. Not just us, our entire family and group of friends. EVERYONE is shocked because this is not how they used to be. They've done cakes for us numerous times. Anyway, we went in there super excited to choose our wedding cake flavor, design and leave the deposit. We originally called to make an appointment and asked what their latest appointment was as we had to drive from downtown LA after work. They gave us an appointment for 5:30 pm. 5 min later the girl called back (which we should not have answered so that they would have left a message) and said actually our latest appointment is 5pm. So we agreed and scheduled the appointment. We went with the mama and sisters so we had to have everyone leave work early and meet us there. We walked in and there was a couple being helped. The girl who worked there said hi is your app at 5:30? We said originally yes but you guys switched it to 5. She said oh ok no you're probably 5:30 because they are the 5 pm. So a bit confused, we said umm ok and discussed options with the girl until Rafi supposedly came. Midway another couple walked in and said they have an appointment for 5:30. We actually knew the couple and had a nice chat. They were confused as well when we said we had an app. too. Anyway the girl who worked there kept coming out and discussing options. We said we have an appointment with Rafi and would like to discuss with him. After a bit she came back and asked us what flavor we wanted and told the other couple Rafi would be with them shortly. We said we wanted fresh flowers on the cake she said Nooo Wayy Rafi stopped doing that so again we were confused as we have had him make cakes for us with fresh flowers in the past. Anyway we said ok then we'll talk to him to see if he can achieve a similar look with the edible cake flowers. We are sitting there Rafi comes out and helps the other couple. Extremely confuseddd we're looking at each-other as our appointment was at 5 and it's like 5:40 and Rafi is seeing another couple and not eveen acknowledging us as if we aren't even there. Are you kidding?!!! The girl came back we said what the heck is going on here. She said well your name was not on our schedule that's why Rafi chose to see them and not you guys. Extremelyyyyyy angry at this point we said that that's not right we had an appointment and we came at that time. Why are we being treated this way? We decided to just wait and eventually see him and get some clear answers as to what the heck was going on with their scheduling. We all have our lives and things to do especially with a WEDDING around the corner. So we didn't have an hour to waste there. It was 4 of us. Mistakes happen we decided to not let it get to our mood. Anyway, he talks to that couple and goes back inside. This girl keeps coming to continue to discuss after we told her like 100 times we would like to discuss the rest of the details with Rafi. 5 min later she went in came back and said I don't want to have you guys wait so long Rafi said he's not going to do the design you want anyway (we wanted fresh flowers on the cake). So let me just get your order. Needless to say, we all stood up and walked right out. We cannot believe how unprofessional Rafi was he did not even come out to apologize for anything. While this chaos was happening he was just in the back and didn't even bother to step out and say sorry this didn't work out. I mean absolutely crazy. Neither him not the employee apologized onceeee. The employee kept saying "I see I see" and not even acknowledging that they messed up this whole thing in the first place. She was like my ipad is off. I cant get into it. The word "Sorry" was one we did not hear. Please chose a different cake place for your special day. One that will share your excitement and definitely not add to your stress. . read more

I had to shop around and visit some other places until I decided to go see Rafi. I was first hesitant because I thought his prices would be very much above my budget. To my surprise his prices were very reasonable and he worked with me on exactly what I wanted. It was a pleasure meeting Rafi, he is so nice and down to earth. I have known Rafi for a long time. When he first got started my friend and I introduced him to the Armenian community. Rafi is amazing and professional at what he does. However, he hires the opposite of himself; unprofessional and rude. His day to day staff is ridiculously incompetent. No matter how well known you become, you have to make sure to never forget your original clientele. Please either fire or train your staff and make sure they have a polite way of answering the phone calls and forwarding messages to you. I'm like a few of the previous reviewers- I really want to give this place a 5 star review but it fell a bit flat. I can begin by saying Rafi himself is very nice. He listened to my request and wrote down appropriate notes to make sure the cake was done according to my request. I had taken in a picture of what I wanted with a few minor changes. He said that the cake would be fairly simple and he'd have no problems accomplishing the task. Fast forward to the day of the event when I saw the cake for the first time...The cake was cute but it had some issues that just irked me. Proportionately, the cake topper was smaller than the overall cake. It looked like it got lost on the cake. Additionally, the cake had a bow between the two tiers and that seemed to be falling off, predominately because it was proportionately off as well. It was huge. Of course aside from a visual standpoint there was the issue of taste. The chocolate cake wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The vanilla bean filling wasn't bad, but again not great. I was looking for an intense chocolatiness that it lacked. I was looking for a creamy vanilla taste with lots of vanilla bean speckles, but I didn't see or taste that. It was a timid cake... Not sure what the going rate is for special event cakes these days, but I felt it was a bit steep. Again, for all I know other bakeries may be charging more, I didn't shop around. It was the buzz of this place that sold me. Not saying I won't try them again, maybe a second time might bring me better luck....we'll see. One small advice that might really benefit this place is for there to be a book of some sort with images of his ORIGINAL work. To give people who are unfamiliar a place to start from. Their is no such book, just a small selection of images, some which aren't even his work, on an ipad to view. read more

I seriously cannot get enough of the sweets here. The strawberry macaroons are amazing, the eclairs are probably the best I have ever had. On top of all of that, Rafi is so creative with his cakes, he can seriously make anything! There are some really unique slices of cake here too with a fruity taste if you want to try something different. I know for a fact he has really good quality ingredients, you can taste it. I recommend him to everyone I know and I never hear anything but good things about the cakes he makes for my friends. By far, the best gourmet bakery in So Cal. Rafi's cakes, pastries, cookies and other amazing edibles are tastes so unique and amazing, I cant help but always think of him first when I am craving something sweet. This is not your "walk in and point to the case" and walk out with some stale sweets type bakery. The majority of his work is custom orders made in advance from the highest quality ingredients assembled with care and attention. His cake flavors are unique - candied orange, yum! - and he has a variety of tastes that will suit any palate. Unlike other places, he does not use a cheap sugary cream to disguise the lack of flavor in his cakes. His cakes are moist and rich in flavor with creams that compliment. The decor on his cakes and desserts are very classy and elegant (gold leaf powders, silver pearls, amazing and unique hand made sugar flowers). They not only taste good, but look amazing. I have used Rafi's Pastry for every family birthday and special occasion practically since he opened. He even did my wedding dessert bar featuring parfaits, mouses, macaroons, creme brules and truffles which got rave reviews and my gorgeous AND tasty wedding cake. His desserts always amaze your guests and I feel like I am constantly giving his contact info out to somewhere after they indulge in a bite of something I ordered from him. His desserts never disappoint. And on top of all this talent, he has got to be one of the nicest and most patient people I know. This is a real find worth traveling to Glendale to enjoy - and order for a Special Occasion. My husband's birthday cake, French chocolate w/ choc hazelnut mousse filling (and crunchies in the filling - yum) topped with a lovely butter cream frosting was absolutely delicious, and the cake was eaten up that night with returnees for seconds (and thirds!). Rafi was trained at the renowned LeNotre Patisseries in Paris. Need I say more to those who have gained a few pounds there.... And he is a lovely young man, working very hard with his sister to build his business. His prices are very reasonable, and I hope they stay that way. Terrible service! They confirmed our order but made the wrong cake. That's OK, everyone makes mistakes. We gave them an opportunity to fix it (more than half a day) they first said that we were better off with the cake they had made for us and Rafi had an attitude about it but eventually made the one we had ordered. When we went to pick up our order, one of the cakes had been damaged and they had no packaging. They stated that they didn't have boxes to fit the cakes in. When we called them wanting to express our disappointment, the lady said that they did everything they could for us and the only apology we received was because we "did not have a good experience" she said. His cakes and the rest of his pastries have just the right amount of sugar which allows you to enjoy the taste of the rest of the ingredients. I hired Rafi earlier this year to do a birthday cake for my 2 yr old. Rafi was so personable. He made exactly what I need which was a 2 tier ballerina inspired cake. The cake was beautiful. I was surprised to see my cake being a lot bigger than the size I actually order. Rafi said he just thought I deserved a bigger cake. I couldn't thanked him enough. I thought he was very kind for doing that. Unfortunately, for the day of my daughters birthday NO ONE SHOWED UP...of course I was very upset. If i can give this place 0 stars I would!!! You don't deserve even 1! I'm the type that won't go and write a bad review because the time just isn't worth it to me. But this deserves one! I have a week left for my event, so I go to talk about the design of the cake. I tell the RUDE, IGNORANT, LOW CLASS, front lady what I want for the cake. She keeps going back and forth to ask the cake maker in what to do. I show her a photo of my cake and tell her that I want it like the photo but in boy colors . There's sprinkles on that cake and I told her there is pink on that sprinkles so I don't want that. She says well I can't change that because it comes in a pack. I said ok that's understandable, what else can we do? If we just don't put any sprinkles, any recommendations from the cake maker? She says no, we're gonna do it like the picture that's what you want . I told her can I please talk to the cake maker, she goes back starts complaining to him, comes back and says oh your event is 2 days after thanksgiving so we can't do your cake . To be honest, I kept cool and didn't want to walk out that door when she was giving horrible customer service, but she had the audacity to say that to her client. I said wow you're funny and she says you're funny . She thinks she can sit there and talk to clients like that. I went to them because with this event my husband said we're on a budget since my usual cake person is on the pricey side. But it turned out that they quoted me a very high price! I called my usual cake person and wow the customer service they gave me! I tell her about the sprinkles and she's like I wouldn't even do the sprinkles, we can do this and that just leave it to the master cake maker and he'll do his magic.That's the service people need! My event was on March 10, 2017 for my kids christening. I ordered the cake and all the desserts from Rafi. Let me just say that he's got the best personality and is such a nice person to work with.
